Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:01 PM)
Thanks for stopping by to chat. Sorry about having to cancel on Wednesday. I'm glad we were able to meet up today. Let's get to some questions.
If Monroe signs somewhere else for ridiculous money, what is Ravens back-up plan at LT?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:02 PM)
You're not going to like it, but one contingency plan is re-signing Michael Oher and putting him at left tackle. Another option is moving left guard Kelechi Osemele to left tackle. I also wouldn't rule out a less expensive signing like Anthony Collins. He played really well last season for the Bengals but he has one year as a starter.
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi Jamison, Ozzie Newsom usually takes the best talent available, will he go with someone for the offensive line, defensive secondary or a wide receiver with the Ravens first round pick?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:04 PM)
I believe the Ravens have to go offense with the first-round pick. They used the draft last year to restock on defense. This year, the picks have to be used to add a wide receiver, tight end or offensive tackle.
Mike (Augusta, Ga)
I see Lance Moore was just released from NO....any interest in him and a possibility for the Ravens?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:05 PM)
As Ozzie Newsome put it, the Ravens want a wide receiver who can convert third downs and make yards after the catch. Last season, Moore averaged 1.7 yards after the catch, the worst in the NFL. He doesn't fit the Ravens' profile.
Jordan (South Florida)
Do you think the Ravens should trade up for Khalil Mack?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:06 PM)
The Ravens have only four picks that they can use to trade (they can't trade comp picks). The Ravens have too many needs to give up picks to move up. The cost is too much.
If Monroe is not re-signed and assuming we do not sign another OT to a large contract, could the Ravens possibly use that money on Jairus Byrd or Hakeem Nicks? Thanks Jamison!
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:09 PM)
There's no doubt that Byrd is the best safety available. He would significantly improve the Ravens' secondary. But he would take a lot of money to sign. The Ravens have to make offense the priority this offseason. Spending too much on a defensive player could limit what the can do to improve the offense. Nicks should definitely be on the Ravens' radar, although durability and no TDs in 2013 are a concern.

Is Monroe playing hardball because he know a team like the Dolphins will over pay him?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:11 PM)
I wouldn't necessarily describe it as hardball. From his perspective, it's just being smart. It makes no sense for him personally to sign a deal before free agency when the Dolphins and Cardinals are expected to spend big money on offensive tackles. Tough situation for Ravens, but a good one for Monroe.
If Monroe and Oher are not re-signed I dont think it will be a major deal. If we can somehow get a veteran center (Dietrich-Smith or De le Puente) and a right tackle like Collins, then the draft can be used to bolster the o-line(Lewan, Martin, Moses) and then use the money on someone like Byrd, Joseph and/or Starks to improve the defense. Your thoughts Jamison?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:17 PM)
I like your thoughts in terms of adding a veteran center, and both are potential targets. I would've preferred Alex Mack, but the Browns put the transition tag on him. To be honest, Collins would fill a need but there is risk involved because of a lack of starting experience. He has 25 starts in six seasons with the Bengals. The perfect scenario is Lewan slipping to the Ravens, but I don't see that happening. Martin could be an option in first round, but I need to look more at Moses. If this goes down like this, I will certainly give you credit!
Kevin Baltimore [via mobile]
Ozzie said that he is looking for a athletic free safety would malcolm jenkins fit what he is looking for?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:19 PM)
I wouldn't rule out Jenkins, but I can see others (like Miami's Chris Clemons) being higher on the Ravens' list.
I feel you are having technical issues during every chat
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:21 PM)
We do the best we can. Would you prefer to have an imperfect chat or no chat at all?
Ryan (Hanover, PA)
Odds Joe Flacco is the Ravens QB after the 2016 season?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:21 PM)
Tell me what Flacco does in 2014 and 2015. That factors into the decision.
Sam Koch (Baltimore)
Am I safe from being a potential cap casualty?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:22 PM)
Yes. I was later told by the Ravens that Koch was never in jeopardy of being cut. The Ravens would've created $1.6 million by cutting him.
what are the chances the ravens sign Jason Avant to and 1 or 2 year deal and if not do you think they might sign Hakeem Nicks?.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:25 PM)
I like Avant as a third or fourth receiver, not a starting one. He's never caught more than 53 passes in a season and he's had four TDs in his past four seasons.
could Jones join Pagano in Indy.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:26 PM)
I would say the Colts, Dolphins, Jets and Patriots could all be interested in Jones.
Nate (Richmond, Va)
If Champ is healthy could he be a viable option at FS for the Ravens?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:28 PM)
I like the idea in theory, but not every CB can convert to safety like Rod Woodson. There is a risk involved, and Bailey seems to get banged up more each year.
Any shot the Ravens give Wagner a realistic shot at starting, either LT or RT if Monroe is not re-signed?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:30 PM)
Wagner at RT is a consideration. He was a second-round talent before his struggles at the Senior Bowl. The Ravens have high hopes for him. Ideally, you would want Wagner to win a competition for that spot. You don't want to be looking for a journeyman OT if Wagner looks bad in training camp and the preseason.
Which free agent wide receiver makes the most sense for the ravens as far as skill set and price?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:32 PM)
In terms of price, every receiver is going to be expensive. As far as skill set, I tend to favor Eric Decker and Golden Tate. I do like Nicks, but injury history makes him risky.
Tyler (Cleveland) [via mobile]
Hey JH! As a Brown's fan I just wanted to say I miss you r analysis now that you no longer cover the Browns
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:34 PM)
Thanks Tyler. I enjoyed covering the division for two seasons. Browns fans are not only passionate but they are in every part of the United States.
talib to the Ravens
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:35 PM)
Cornerback is the one position on defense that the Ravens don't have a big need. If Graham isn't re-signed, Ravens have to find a nickel back.
I personally think the the ravens Trade back this year into the mid 20...like 25-27...do you agree? and if they do, who do you think they would pick from there
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:39 PM)
Haven't really looked at who would be available at the end of the first round. I've been more focused in the middle part right now. Long time until the draft in May. I personally don't like the trade down scenario, unless there is no one worth that No. 17 pick when the Ravens are on the clock. Trading back in 2010 (when they picked Sergio Kindle and Terrence Cody in second round) didn't work out so well.
Hey Jamison,I noticed there has been less Wake-Up Caws. Whats up with that?Keep up the great work!thanks!
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:41 PM)
I put together Wake-up Caws when there are enough articles to link to. When there are only one or two articles about the Ravens from other media, it's difficult to produce a quality Wake-up Caw. That's why I have been going with "This date in Ravens history," which has been popular based on the number of hits. I enjoy Wake-up Caws, but I don't want to force them.
good to see these chats still going on JH :) Do you see the Ravens being willing to trade up in round 1 of the draft? And who would it take falling out of the top 10 to make them make the move?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:43 PM)
A blast from the AFC North past here. Yes, still having the chats. I don't see the Ravens trading up in the first round because they only have four picks they can trade. It would be tempting if Texas A&M WR Mike Evans unexpectedly slipped, but I don't see him lasting past the Lions at No. 10.
Pete (Olney, MD)
Your thoughts on Ryan Jensen? Back-up C/G or possible starter?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:45 PM)
He's a possible starter, but not for 2014. Jensen needs at least another year before moving up to a starting role. It would be a mistake if the Ravens went into the season with Jensen and Gradkowski competing for the job. Ravens need to get someone with experience for the upcoming season.
Under the new Kubiak system, how will this affect Flacco's long ball? Will we see more or less of it?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:47 PM)
If the Ravens can get the play-action working, it will free up things downfield for Flacco. I believe that is the key, no matter who is calling the plays. I haven't analyzed the deep ball under Kubiak, but I remember Andre Johnson catching some passes downfield for the Texans.
What is your best guess for compensatory picks awarded to the Ravens this year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:48 PM)
I break down that topic best in this link: http://espn.go.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/6508/ravens-mail-how-many-comp-picks
rich germano (Lynn ma.)
is Rice done in Baltimore
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:49 PM)
Rice has 2014 to prove he's not done. If he struggles in 2014, he likely won't be with the Ravens in 2015.
Bill (Stafford, VA)
What do you see the Ravens doing with Matt Furstenburg?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:49 PM)
Practice squad again or No. 3 tight end. Ravens need a backup TE behind Pitta. They can find one in the draft or free agency.
mark uk [via mobile]
Are the ravens letting munroe enterfree agency to seek valuation they will match or are they going a different route
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:51 PM)
The Ravens' preference is to sign Monroe before free agency begins, but that's not going to happen. The Ravens are still going to pursue Monroe, but they're not going to overpay for him. That's why they didn't put the $11M franchise tag on him.
We have had too many Offensive Coordinators and since Kubiak is a previous HC do we see him leaving after this season or Next? Is this also an indication on the Ravens Office Picking the Right people for the right job?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:52 PM)
The Ravens would love to see Kubiak as a head coach somewhere in a few years. That means he was a success as the Ravens' offensive coordinator. It's a good problem to have. The Ravens have dealt with that with defensive coordinators over the years.
Ravenous128 (Columbia, MD)
If Monroe leaves, will the Ravens get a compensatory pick for him next year?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:53 PM)
I will ask the league about that. Not sure since he was traded. Will let you know when I hear back from the NFL. Good question.
With Ozzie propensity of mainly signing players that have been cut, do you see us making a big push to sign many regular unrestricted free agents?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:55 PM)
Newsome said twice this season that the Ravens may alter their strategy and sign more unrestricted FAs (ones whose contracts expired). The feeling is the Ravens need to do everything they can to improve this team and they can't limit themselves in regards to the talent pool.
Chris (Florida) [via mobile]
What % do you give the ravens getting Monroe signed before Tuesday?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:56 PM)
10 percent. And that may be optimistic. Based on the teams that need offensive tackles, it's not in his best interest to sign before reaching the market.
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (2:57 PM)
Thank you so much for the questions. This was a strong hour of chat. I'm still looking to have the chat Wednesday. But that could change if the Ravens are busy with signings.
