Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
Hey gang. Hope everyone is having a great week. The NFL sked comes out later today and it should be interesting to see who the Seahawks play in the opener.
cha (Tacoma WA)
Do the Hawks have to start thinking about curtailing Lynch's carries to keep him fresh? The biggest challenge will be giving him enough reps to get in rhythm but not so many he wears down.
Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
I think you'll see Michael get more of the load this season.
Joey Higgins-Luckow (Madison, WI)
Lots of mocks with an offensive lineman going to Seattle round one. Understandable, but they do have two young talented guys there in Alvin Bailey and Michael Bowie. Do you think they are ready to be full time starters?
Terry Blount (2:02 PM)
The Seahawks are high on both players. Bowie likely will get a chance to start at RT and Bailey probably will challenge Carpenter at LG. but the Seahawks still will draft an offensive linemen early. This is a deep draft for OL.
cha (Tacoma WA)
The Hawks typically, if anything, trade down in the draft. Who would you see sitting at say pick 26 or so that would cause the Hawks to trade up? Aaron Donald, Odell Beckham Jr, and Marquise Lee would be three they should consider trading up for.
Terry Blount (2:04 PM)
I really doubt they will trade up, but I'll give you a hint on my buzz video for next week. Don't be surprised if they trade down to get an extra pick, especially after losing their 7th-ound pick to get Pryor.
Jaxon (Salt Lake City) [via mobile]
PC and JS typically surprise us every year on draft day. What move could they make that would surprise you most on day 1?
Terry Blount (2:05 PM)
The biggest surprise to me would be for them to trade up. That would be a shocker.
Garry (Point Loma)
Is Pete Carroll a certified coaching genius?
Terry Blount (2:06 PM)
I don't know if there is such a thing, but he definitely knows his stuff. What Pete really does well is gain the trust and respect of this players.
Wouldn't it be better to do a long term deal with Earl Thomas right now? Top safety $ is lower than CB $. Sign Thomas now and work a deal with Sherman after Revis's $12M expires and the market deflates a little.
Terry Blount (2:07 PM)
Almost everyone expected Thomas to be done first, and that still could happen, even with the talk this week of Sherm's deal being close. It wouldn't shock me to see the Seahawks announced both deals on the same day. Both are going to get done.
Harrry (Pomona, CA)
Where does Terrell Pryor fit with the Seahawks?
Terry Blount (2:09 PM)
Really hard to say at this point. The Seahawks wanted him because he is an exceptional athlete with unusual skills. He's coming to compete as a backup QB, but I think the Seahawks will try to find some special ways to use him as a hybrid slot receiver.
Scott (Westminster, CO)
More likely that Pryor see the field as a gadget player than as the 3rd string QB, right?
Terry Blount (2:10 PM)
Don (Seattle, WA)
Any word on Jesse Williams' health? It would be great to have him in the D-Line rotation this year.
Terry Blount (2:11 PM)
Jesse says he's ready to go. I think it could be one of the surprise players for the team this season.
Josh, Redding, Ca [via mobile]
Can you see the Hawks trading Turbin with Michael now expected to have a larger role?
Terry Blount (2:13 PM)
I doubt it. First, Michael has to show them he can block well. Second, there isn't much of a market for a backup RB. You have to look down the road. Lynch might not be here in 2015.
what do you see as the teams greatest weakness leading into next season?
Terry Blount (2:14 PM)
I still think they have to improve their pass blocking up front. I realize injuries were a factor here, but there were way too many times last year when Wilson was running for his life.
Hey Terry. Excited about TP joining the team. Is there a real possibiity of TP getting some playing time, in any role? I read nothing but the assertion that TP only wants to be a QB...
Terry Blount (2:16 PM)
He does, but that he still could line up at another spot sometimes. At this point in his career, he needs to be open-minded if he wants to stay in the NFL.
Odds the Hawks look to deal Tarvaris late in camp if they like what they see in Pryor
Terry Blount (2:17 PM)
Highly unlikely. Jackson is one of the most reliable backup QBs in the league, well-like by his teammates, tough as nails and well versed in their offensive scheme.
Hi Terry, fast forward to 2015, who's the starting RB? Lynch or Michael? I feel that Lynch is on borrowed time with him contract set to expire in 2015 and the hit it takes on the cap. If Michael can do what we all expect him to do, is it feasible to think he supplants Lynch after next season?
Terry Blount (2:18 PM)
Just a guess at this point, but I'll say Michael with Lynch moving on down the road.
dave (va beach)
who do you think will be the nickel ?any chance chandler fenner gets some time?
Terry Blount (2:20 PM)
Fenner will get a look, but more likely that it's Lane or Shead playing the nickel for now. The Seahawks are really high on Tharold Simon, the 2013 rookie out of LSU. But he has a lot to prove after missing all of last year.
Matt (Portland) [via mobile]
Do you expect an early round pick at the CB position with the recent losses in FA?
Terry Blount (2:22 PM)
I'd be really surprised if they did that in the first round. Maybe second round if he kid from Nebraska - Stanley Jean-Baptiste - is still there.
Chris (Latham, NY)
Does the lack of depth concern you in the secondary? I feel that will be a weakness this year
Terry Blount (2:25 PM)
I think they still have good depth there Chris. Jeremy Lane could start at CB for most teams. Jeron Jackson is a quality backup at SS and DeShawn Shead proved late last year that he can play at this level. They also signed Phillip Adams, who played well last year at Oakland. That being said, they still would like to add another safety and a corner. One safety they brought in this week to look at is Deone Bucannon of Wash. St.
Sean (Los Angeles)
Hey Terry - Love your coverage of the Hawks! Has the Finley at TE ship sailed?
Terry Blount (2:27 PM)
Thanks Sean. Not entirely, but I don't see them doing that now unless Finley was willing to play for the minimum. And he still hasn't been cleared health wise.
If the Hawks had the ability to draft one of these WR's at the end of the first, who would you prefer; Kelvin Benjamin, Odell Beckham Jr., Jordan Matthews or Cody Lattimer?
Terry Blount (2:30 PM)
Beckham won't get there. I'd take Benjamin if he made it that far, but I know the Seahawks coaches really like Latimer. Two tings, as I said today in my buzz video, I don't think re-signing Rice means the Seahawks have lost interest in drafting a big WR. And two, I noticed Latimer was on the 30-player list invited to NY for draft day. That means they think he could go in R1, quite a move up from two months ago when he was viewed as a 4th-round pick.
Dave (va beach)
do you think bruce irvin will get more opportunities this year to rush the passer?
Terry Blount (2:31 PM)
I hope so. I think that's his strength. Truthfully, Bruce needs to step up this season.
Dana (Placerville, CA)
How did you manage to go from covering Texas based sports to Seattle?
Terry Blount (2:34 PM)
I moved to Seattle seven years ago because I love it here. There are many things I love about Texas, especially my home town of Houston. It was a wonderful place to grow up when I was a kid because of NASA and the opening of the Astrodome, my second home as a boy. But in all honesty, I'm not going back. I absolutely love the Pacific Northwest.
Scott (Westminster, CO)
Which defection by FA do you think the team will miss most?
Terry Blount (2:38 PM)
Good question Scott. The obvious answer is Tate, but they have Harvin to step in. They really will miss Tate's punt returning skills. No one knows who will fill that role at this point. But I think the Seahawks are going to miss McDonald. He was a rock in the middle of the defensive line last year. Someone is going to need to step up there _ ether Jesse Williams or Jordan Hill _ to add quality depth.
Why do you tweet negative comments about the Mariners and Seahawks all the time if you love Seattle?
Terry Blount (2:40 PM)
What does that have to do with loving Seattle? I'm a journalist George, not a cheerleader. Goodness knows I'm not the only one ripping of the M's these days. But I certainly haven't said many critical things on the Seahawks. Why would you?
Why hasn't Seattle showed any interest in Miles Austin? If healthy he would be the ideal man to replace the role Tate held.
Terry Blount (2:41 PM)
That's a big if Brandon. He's not the big-body WR they're looking for and he wants too much money.
Kyle Weber (Carson, WA)
Earlier this week Walter Thurmond claimed the Giants now have the best secondary in the league. Do you agree with Thurmond or do you think Seattle is still the elite secondary?
Terry Blount (2:43 PM)
Not even close. Seattle has the best starting secondary in the NFL, hands down. Three of them - Thomas, Chancellor and Sherman - probably are the best at their positions. Thurmond got into some silly Twitter spat about being the best nickel backs.
Scott (Westminster, CO)
Best Clam Chowder in the Emerald City?
Terry Blount (2:46 PM)
Now that's a tough one. I love the Crab Pot, and I'm partial to Elliott's Oyster House. But for just a quick chowder on the go, Ivar's ain't bad. And I love Duke's. Not Emerald City, but the Lobster Shop on Commencement Bay in Tacoma is good stuff. Now you made me hungry.
Corey olympia wa [via mobile]
Is Lynch still facing any suspension after his DUI a couple years ago?
Terry Blount (2:47 PM)
Probably not since he wasn't convicted of a DUI. He was convicted of reckless driving.
Bobbie (Kenmore, WA)
Do you think the Hawks will try to draft Bishop Sankey? He would be a fan favorite
Terry Blount (2:48 PM)
No doubt about that, but I just don't see it since they have three good backs. Sankey may be the first RB taken, but that may not happen until the 2nd round.
luke (los angeles)
Terry, any thoughts on the state of Auto racing>
Terry Blount (2:50 PM)
I like what NASCAR has done with the elimination process in the Chase. And they have two future stars in Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson.
nate (Boulder, CO) [via mobile]
Thx for the chat, Terry. Is it possible that Irvin goes back to the LEO position he was drafted to be and Smith starts at LB?
Terry Blount (2:52 PM)
A good idea in my book, but Quinn said he still see Irvin as linebacker. However, these spots at outside LB and DE for the Seahawks are somewhat interchangeable and hybrids. In my opinion, they need to find a way for Irvin to rush the passer more, no matter where they play him.
Fabrice (Spokane WA)
Terry, what do you think about the schedule for the season it will be heavy no? And you think The Seahawks are looking much better this season than last year for to win again the SB?
Terry Blount (2:55 PM)
The schedule is brutal. The Seahawks play half their games against 2013 playoff teams, and that doesn't include two games against 10-6 Arizona. Seattle still is a top contender to return to the Super Bowl, but its an extremely difficult thing to do. Only eight teams have won the Super Bowl back-to-back since its inception in 1967.
Anthony G. Vancouver, WA [via mobile]
Wbat do you think of taking Joel Bitonio in the first? I like Bowie and Bailey too, but with JS anfd Pete drafting gus who can come in and compete, Bitonio, or Kuandjio seem like 2 very likely scenarios.
Terry Blount (2:56 PM)
Those aren't bad choices, but I would take Xavier Su'a-Filo first, who can play guard or tackle. My fave OT they could get is Morgan Moses.
In general, how would you grade the way the NFL is officiated?
Terry Blount (2:58 PM)
A. It is an extremely difficult job consider how fast and how physical players are today, but for the most part, the officials get it right.
Dave (va beach)
i think we have to look at a big tight end at some point in the draft, luke is nice but he is not the blocker zack is..someone to take over for zack when he moves on
Terry Blount (2:58 PM)
Don't forget about Anthony McCoy - a big, physical guy if he's healthy.
Outside of SF, who do you think poses the bigger threat next season, STL or AZ?
Terry Blount (3:00 PM)
Arizona, without question. The Cardinals are a team on the rise. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me to se them finish ahead of the 49ers, who are going through some turmoil right now.
Morgan C. Portland, OR [via mobile]
Hi Terry, Who do you see being the Seahawks FB this up coming season?
Terry Blount (3:01 PM)
I think it's Coleman's job to lose.
Terry Blount (3:02 PM)
Gotta run folks. Another great chat today. Really enjoyed it. We'll have a lot of info at ESPN.com later today when the NFL schedule is released. Have a great week. Peace.
