Chad Ford (12:59 PM)
Aloha everyone. I'm chatting live from Chicago today. NBA Draft Combine starts tomorrow at 9 am ET on ESPNU. We will be talking NBA Draft all hour ... Let's roll.
Andrew McGrady (Los Angeles, CA)
Do you think skipping the combine was a good or bad move for Jabari Parker and Wiggins? Also, do you believe Jabari Parker will go first in the draft?
Chad Ford (1:04 PM)
I don't think it can help them. That leaves only one option. It could hurt them. If Wiggins didn't shoot the ball well or didn't go crazy hard. Or if Parker looks out of shape. Just not sure it does them any good. I like the idea of the combine, but unless guys are playing 5-on-5 the stuff on the court isn't going to really help most players -- especially the best ones.
Cory (Omaha, NE)
Is Embiid going to allow his back to be checked out by NBA team doctors at the combine? Or will he just show up to get measured and decline to do anything else like seemingly all top-15 prospects are doing?
Chad Ford (1:06 PM)
We will see. If he skips the medical, it will raise red flags. But it doesn't necessarily mean it will hurt his stock. Anthony Bennett skipped them last year and went No. 1. The teams that are looking at drafting him will obviously get to look at his back. If they aren't allowed to, I seriously doubt a team will draft him.
Dom(Orlando) [via mobile]
Who has the most to gain from the combine this weekend? Who has the most to lose?
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
Players that tend to help their stock here are players that had less exposure in college. Someone like Zach LaVine from UCLA or Elfrid Payton of Louisiana Lafayette. As far as who can lose ... anyone who shows up out of shape or doesn't play hard. That turns scouts off.
Any prospects you believe could test out athletically better than expected and get a stock boost this week?
Chad Ford (1:17 PM)
That is another way to help your stock. Test better than expected and you can get a boost. Worse than expected can hurt you as well though I think most teams don't put a lot of stock in those athletic tests. I'd say someone like Nik Stauskas or Doug McDermott or Tyler Ennis could help themselves with a good showing in that department. Talented players who may be knocked down a rung right now because of issues around athleticism.
Chad Ford (1:18 PM)
Sorry ... having some internet issues from the hotel. Hold on everyone ...
Daigo (Las Vegas, NV)
Chad, a follow up on your Embiid answer. Could Embiid use that knowledge to dictate where he wants to go? Could he deny medicals to teams he has no interest in?
Chad Ford (1:20 PM)
Yes. I think that's possible. He doesn't have to send anything to anyone. They are his confidential medical reports. That's one way to absolutely control what teams are willing to draft you.
I read your take on Stauskas and completely agree! His handles are severely underrated. My question is, do you think he could become a lesser version of Steph Curry (he's more athletic than Curry), and if that he's capable of being a starting pg, say with Oladipo?
Chad Ford (1:35 PM)
I think that's the best case scenario for him. He has the ability to be a Steph Curry type point guard. He has the handles and basketball IQ. I think he and Gary Harris are getting looks that way. If they can convince NBA teams they can play some point, they'll move up a few notches.
Who do you think won't be showing up at the Combine?
Chad Ford (1:45 PM)
Wiggins, Embiid and Parker for sure aren't coming. Mitch McGary, Adreian Payne and Sean Kilpatrick are out with injuries. Julius Randle, Dante Exum, Aaron Gordon, Marcus Smart, Noah Vonleh, Tyler Ennis, Nik Stauskas and Doug McDermott are unlikely to participate in the drills portion. Probably stronger than unlikely. But the decision will be finalized tonight and tomorrow. There are also some travel issues that may keep a few players out. This is a bit of a mess for the NBA.
Chad Ford (1:46 PM)
Sorry the internet issues keep coming. Going to call this one short. Check out the Draft Combine on ESPNU starting tomorrow at 9 am ET. Lots of great stuff ahead.
