Chat with Barry Sanders
Barry Sanders is No. 3 on the NFL's all-time rushing list.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, former Detroit Lions great Barry Sanders stops by to chat about winning last year's Madden Cover Vote as well as about this year's vote, which is down to four candidates: Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Richard Sherman and Colin Kaepernick. The finalists will be announced on Friday's NFL Live.
Sanders graced the cover of Madden NFL 25 after winning the "old school" bracket last year, defeating "new school" winner Adrian Peterson in the finals. It was just another accolade to go with his Heisman Trophy, 10 Pro Bowl appearances, four NFL rushing titles and Hall of Fame bust.
Send your questions now and join Sanders Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. ET!

Barry is here!
do you play more madden now that you were on the cover?
Barry Sanders (11:43 AM)
I played some. It's really hard to get on the game in my house, because I have a 7 year old, 10 year old and 12 year old boys. They kind of hog the game.
did you trash talk Adrian Peterson any during the final vote last year?
Barry Sanders (11:44 AM)
Not really. We kind of talked about Oklahoma a little bit. We know some of the same folks. We didn't elevate to trash talking. I assumed he was going to win, so I didn't feel comfortable throwing trash out there.
Do you think nfl teams are de-emphasizing the rb position?
Barry Sanders (11:45 AM)
I think some of them are. But, look at the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl, or you look at the 9ers, who have been deep into the playoffs. Look at last year, with the Seahawks. The list goes on and on. Teams are having great success both on the ground and with reciever.
Noah (Phoenix, AZ)
Have you played as yourself in this year's Madden 25 game?
Barry Sanders (11:47 AM)
No. No, I didn't. I didn't play that much and I just played as the current Lions. They have Calvin and the awesome passing game.
What are you most excited about for this upcoming NFL season?
Barry Sanders (11:48 AM)
Hmmm....I think first, our division. With the Lions and Packers and Bears and Vikings. Just to see how it shakes out. The last three years, the Packers have won. To win without Rogers last year was amazing. Then you want to see how the Seahawks respond to being champions and seeing how Peyton comes back from last season. How the Patriots respond. There is great excitement coming into this year.
were you upset that RB's didn't do better in the madden voting this year?
Barry Sanders (11:49 AM)
You're always hopeful. Last year, it came down to me and Adrian, maybe they wanted to take a break from the RBs. But you have some great young players, even with the finalists. Colin Kaepernick, Luck, Sherman, Newton. Those are four great stars in the game right now. Unless you're going to put Adrian or McCoy back in there, those are four likely guys to be there.
Robert (North Carolina)
What do you think of the Madden Curse?
Barry Sanders (11:50 AM)
Nothing happened to me. I had a great year. I am not a believer. Not a believer in the curse. Maybe it comes down to if you believe in the curse it will get you and if you don't, it doesn't get you. I think Calvin had a great year a couple of years ago.
Stuart (Brooklyn, NY)
Did you enjoy playing on Thanksgiving! Thanks for the great memories Barry!
Barry Sanders (11:52 AM)
It was a blast. For us, it was a lot different than any other regular season game, because you're the only game in town. There was an excitement over the whole city, there was always different stars at the game and singing the national anthem. It had an almost playoff feel to it. It was always a big deal. The challenge of it was that Thursdays of most weeks, you're not mentally ready to play a game. It was really such a strong tradition with the Lions and all of the excitement surrounding it.
what was the coolest thing you did as a result of winning the cover vote last year?
Barry Sanders (11:53 AM)
The coolest thing I was able to do was probably going to New York for the actual final vote show and being there with Adrian, that whole process was neat. These kids that only know of me through the game and almost having a whole new set of fans that only know you through that is pretty neat. It almost feels like I had a great season last year. I'm coming off a great season, all these new fans that never saw me play.
How did you accomplish all these goals and records? How difficult was it?
Barry Sanders (11:54 AM)
For me, I would say it was one day at a time. Just appreciating the position of being a RB in the NFL. It was something I wouldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams. It was one of my greatest gifts I could receive, being a player. Chasing after a place in the game that many players before me had accomplished, the great RBs that I had watched. It was a responsibility and a privilege.
how many people recognized you for winning the madden vote rather than being a HOF rb?
Barry Sanders (11:55 AM)
I would say there is a good number that know me from the game. But most sports fans know me from my career and the hall of fame. But certainly more people and the younger fans identify with you because of the game.

who do you want on the cover this year?
Barry Sanders (11:56 AM)
I don't know if I have a favorite, but I'm thinking that maybe Richard Sherman will squeak past and win it. He has the momentum on his side that seems to favor him, coming off the Super Bowl and the hoopla with the NFC championship game and his comments. He has time on his side at this point.
Andrew Z. (Struthers, OH)
What did it mean to you to be elected into the Hall of Fame?
Barry Sanders (11:57 AM)
To me, it was just another one of those unique and special experiences I have been able to have in the game of football. It solidified my career and everything I did. It puts you in that elite class of football player that goes down in the history of the game. It is very special.
matthew (indy )
if you could play under any quarterback in the game now who would it be?
Barry Sanders (11:59 AM)
I don't know. Good question.....I might choose someone like a Tom Brady, a guy who opens up defenses and has such a command of the position, where you instantly sort of have the defense on their heels with the way he can pass the ball and competes. The challenge he presents. That's a tough question.
Barry Sanders (11:59 AM)
