AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Good morning, gang! We've got 60 minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so let's get to it, shall we? Second cup of coffee in hand. Who is up first?
Major League Baseball couldn't get a call correct even if it was in front their noses! The umpires in NY missed another call during the Cubs Giants Game! What the hell good is instant replay! Do they really pay these guys.?
AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
If you're talking about the play at 3B, the score was already 5-0. Hardly a huge deal that it was ruled "wrong." I agree, though, that the system still needs tweaking. Really, if the reviewers can't tell at regular speed (or with a single freeze frame on bang-bang calls) within a few seconds, then the call should stand.
Drop Markakis for K. Davis?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
It's close, but I think Davis has better numbers the rest of the way.
Josh (MIAMI HEAT!)
Rizzo/Cano for Freeman/Kemp. Which side do you like?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Because I think Freeman gives you a huge upgrade at 1B, I'll go with that side.
Can we trust Latos when he comes back or will it be a nagging issue this season? Pineda a better option coming off injury?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Obviously, until we see it, we won't know. However, I'm much more willing to roll dice on Latos.
Hey AJ: I read "Yes, It's Hot in Here" and loved it! I've always wanted to be a mascot. Anyway, blockbuster fantasy trade I need your advice on. I give up Tulowitzski and Cespedes, and get back Posey, Cargo, and A. Cabrera. What do you think? It feels fair, but I'm not sure I can bear to trade Tulo. Would you?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
It's certainly a different kind of career. Thanks for reading! No way I'm giving up Tulo.
Best option at SS, Villar, Owings, Simmons, or Drew?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I personally like Owings the best of the bunch.
Is Eovaldi more than a streaming candidate? In other words, is he above or below the (sorely missed) Wandy Line?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
To me, it partially depends on who else is on your staff -- but right now, I'd consider him a No. 4 SP.
Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley's Basement)
Is it time to scoop up Andrew Heaney with Alvarez leaving his start with elbow soreness?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Marlins haven't been the type of team to be afraid of bringing up young SP early, so there's a chance that Heaney gets the call.
With Solarte slumping, what are your thoughts on him the ROS?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
I think it is a slump, so he should rebound a bit from the latest slide... but he's not going to be a .300 hitter rest of the way.
offered paul Goldschmidt for verlander? yes or no
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Getting PG? Can't say yes fast enough.
Derek (work) [via mobile]
Can I drop Shelby Miller in a standard 10 team? Or is there a chance he can put it together soon?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Always a chance, but I have no issue with the drop.
Traded Johnny Cueto for Adam Jones....this it was a good deal?
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I'm not a psychic. Only time will tell. I would not have made that deal personally, however.
Joc Pederson getting the call soon? Ethier cant play CF for long.
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
Sure he can. And Kemp can play left. And Jamie Romak can get the call from Triple-A instead of Joc.
10 tm Mixed, am I killing my team by continuing to hold onto Burnett and Liriano?
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
You can probably do way better.
Two first names = fantasy trouble (nyc)
Joe Nathan..... who's next in line? Take a chance on Joba now? Or Webb in Chi? Familia? Looking to store a reliever in waiting
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I do think Webb is the best of that trio to get saves going forward. I don't think Nathan is as close to getting the hook as is Belisario.
We've been patiently waiting for Pedro Alvarez to "breakout" using the logic that his peripheral stats are showing improvement in approach. You still expecting that breakout?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
"We've" does not include "me"
What do you think of McHugh? His peripherals are all excellent. Can he keep this up to some degree?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Very strong thus far. I'd be in the "can keep in up to some degree" camp, yes.
Have a surplus SS in Starlin Castro...better return in trade: Pedro Alvarez or Matt Carpenter?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I'd say Carpenter is the better return.
Owings or Lowrie ROS?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I really like Owings, but I'm going to lean Lowrie here.
Peter H (Queens NYC)
OK if I trade Mccutchen for V Mart with C eligibility?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I'd like to know what the replacement parts to this deal are -- who takes over in OF for Cutch? Who does V-Mart replace... these things matter. But, I do think it's "OK" to make the deal, in that proverbial vacuum.
Anthony (Andover, MA)
Mesoraco or Rosario, ROS?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I'm with Mesoraco.
Seems like it could lead to a large range of opinion if one watches Springer play or solely looks at his peripherals. Eye test on this guy if off the charts. What do you say?
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Still room for lots of growth, so count me in the group in the positive column.
Matt (Cleveland, OH)
Junior Lake or BJ Upton?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
Justin > Junior > BJ
Dan (Chicago) [via mobile]
AJ need your help badly, Puig or Beltre ROS in points league? Thanks as always!
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Puig for me is the better points league value going forward.
Walt Weiss (Coors Field Party Deck)
Any idea who our closer is? Or will be? Because I pulled ours with 2 outs, with a lead!
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
No reason to think LaTroy isn't the guy. Not his fault that his defense made a pair of errors behind him on second day of back-to-back outings.
Theo (Fort Worth, TX)
On the low end OF question? Cain > Lake?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Very close, but I stick with Lake.
Jon (Bozeman, MT)
C. Johnson or McGehee?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I'll go with Casey.
AJ. How would you feel about trading Braun/Kluber for Scherzer/Myers?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
I'd feel sad and a little bit dead inside.
Danny (New Jersey)
Morneau, Carlos Santana or Garrett Jones?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Justin Morneau is the choice of that trio.
Mike (St. Louis)
Love both of your books. So former Mr. Met here's my fantasy question... does Javier Baez's recent performance impact his call up date? Passed on Polanco, Taveras, and Bradley in a minor league draft after Baez's crazy spring.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
It certainly doesn't push it back any, but I don't think the Cubs are in any rush with the "core four" prospects. To me, it's always been Bryant I expect to see first...
Tom (State College, PA)
Does Z. Britton hold onto the O's closer job when Hunter returns?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Buck has never been a guy to make decisions before he needs to -- when Hunter is ready to return, only then will we need to answer this question. Still a LOT of baseball between now and then.
Danny (New Jersey)
CJ Cron worth picking up? Seems to be playing only against lefties.
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Assuming you can make daily changes, no reason not to have him in there when he does play.
Joe (State College)
Which prospect do you believe to have a bigger impact this year, Polanco or Taveras?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
I think Taveras will at least get a shot to play while Cards have DH next week. Assuming he does well, I find it hard to argue he should be sent down...
Evereth or Starlin ROS?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
Castro for me.
Jason (Long Island)
Wright or Longo at 3B for ROS?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
I'm going with Wright.
Khris Davis or Martin Prado?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
KD for me.
Simmons or Bogaerts ROS (points league)
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Coin toss, really, but slight edge to Andrelton.
Juan (Fantasy Baseball Office)
wade davis pitching pretty good is he worth a add?
AJ Mass (11:45 AM)
I would put him in the group of pitchers to consider using as an upgrade for under-performers, yes.
Please rank Villar, Adsrubal, Beckham, a Ham Sandwich ROS
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Beckham, Asdrubal, Villar... Mmmmmmmmmm.... ham.
Mark Buerhle (Toronto)
How long can I keep this up ?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Throw out the W-L record, as that's really not a lot he can control going forward. Of the top 25 SP, he's No. 25 on my list of being able to maintain...
12-team, 12-keeper league. I have three 2B. Keep, Trade or Drop? Kendrick, Dozier, Gyorko
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
I'd lose Gyorko first of the trio, however I'm not loving any of them all that more than any other. Always attempt to trade before just cutting.
Chris Davis for Hanley in a points league? Can replace Hanley at short with Castro
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Getting Chris Davis? Yes.
I hate replay ! How about we just have a video ump for each game that has authority to buzz down to correct obviously wrong calls ( I'm looking at your Jim Joyce) but just let those bang bang plays stand as called. The system now is actually taking pleasure away from watching the games
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
I'd prefer that as well, but the league wants a "home office" handling it all. That's fine with me... but I agree, it's still taking too long. The point is to overrule obvious mistakes -- not turn every close call into the Zapruder film.
Nobody (including me) seems to love R.A. Dickey, but he's had a nice month and still seems to be ranked highly. Is he worthy of my trust moving forward?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
I still see upside going forward. Not a ton, but I'm in.
Do you think Ellsbury and Price's numbers improve for the rest of the year?
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Price absolutely. Jacoby, not so much.
What's up with your man-crush on Owings? What is he doing that impresses you and makes you pick him over a guy like Simmons (granted he's got a bum ankle)?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
Hey, if you're factoring defense in, Simmons wins hands down... and it's not like I'm going Tulo-1 and Owings -2.
that being said do you still like Ellsbury more than Melky rest of the year in a points league?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
Run production still favors Melky.
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
That's the time we have for today... I'm on Twitter for those I didn't get to (@ajmass)... Thanks to all who asked questions. Please check out "Yes, It's Hot in Here" if you haven't already done so -- and thanks to those who have! We'll be back next week, same bat time, same bat channel.
