Terry Blount (3:00 PM)
Hi gang. What's up? Did you see the town hall meeting last night with the coaches? Lots of interesting comments.
John (Cleveland, OH)
Is Percy Harvin still healthy? Haven't heard much news on him.
Terry Blount (3:00 PM)
100 percent healthy John and looking great in OTAs.
Nick Openshaw (Huntsville, AL)
With Golden Tate gone and Sidney Rice recovering from a torn ACL, what exactly does the team plan to do with their receiver sets? Will Sidney Rice be back in time to start next season? Will Doug Baldwin take more snaps from the slot or the outside? Is Jermaine Kearse in a position to become the #2 receiver? How does the new draftee, Taylor Price, compare to his fellow receivers?
Terry Blount (3:03 PM)
Baldwin is moving outside to Tate's spot. Harvin will start in the slot and Kearse will be the other wide out in 3-wide. Rookie Paul Richardson also is going to play a lot outside. Rice will have to fight to keep his job. Rookie Kevin Norwood also has looked good.
luke (los angeles)
Terry, being a racing man do you think California Chrome wins the Preakness and the triple crown? thanks
Terry Blount (3:03 PM)
I think it hurts him having to start in the No. 2 position, but the Belmont is a long race and I think he can overcome it.
Roger (Northern Cal)
What are the chances St L or Zona sneak up on the Hawks and Niners as both seem to have very good D's
Terry Blount (3:06 PM)
I've been really have on the Cardinals, but losing Washington hurts them. They have issues now at ILB. I still think they can challenge the 49ers for second in the NFC West.
if russell wilson takes his team to another superbowl win this year would it be the greatest start of a career for a qb in nfl history along with his personal stats
Terry Blount (3:07 PM)
Yes it would, and it also would make him a $25 million a year man.
Greg (Tacoma, WA) [via mobile]
With Wilson taking so many sacks last year, my biggest concern for the Hawks is the O-Line. How are they looking in OTAs?
Terry Blount (3:09 PM)
Rookie Justin Britt looks like he can challenge Bowie for the starting spot at RT. Carpenter looks better than he ever has after losing about 20 pounds. They'll be better than last year.
If the O-Line comprises Okung, Unger, Sweezy, Bowie, and Britt (assuming one of them beats out Carpenter) how much of an improvement, if any, is that over last year's line? Marginal? Significant? Or neutral?
Terry Blount (3:11 PM)
A lot of the problems last year were injury-related with Giacomini, Okung and Unger all missing games. Just being healthy would help. I think Bowie or Britt can get the job down at RT. Carpenter will start at LG if he stays in the kind of shape he is right now.
David M (Enumclaw Wa)
Hi Terry, how has the FB position looked while the OTA's you've been to? is coleman or Small taking 1st team reps? and how is Spencer Ware? haven't seen him in any videos or Pictures yet this year..
Terry Blount (3:13 PM)
Coleman is a lock to be the started FB and rookie Kiero Small could be the back-up. Pete Carroll hinted last night that they may use Ware more as a RB, but Carroll praised him and seems to think he has a bright future.
Fabrice (Spokane, WA)
Terry, what's the news about Chris Matthews? Do you think he go to have a shot this season ? With Sydney Rice return and the rookie Norwood what are your thoughts??
Terry Blount (3:15 PM)
Matthews hasn't showed me much yet, but it's early. Rice isn't participating yet in team drills. I like Norwood a lot, really tough guy who is fundamentally sound. And Richardson is blazing fast. Richardson, Harvin, Baldwin and Kearse are locks. That leaves eight guys fighting for two spots, and maybe just one spot. Norwood would get one of them for me. The other is up for grabs.
I'm somewhat concerned(i emphasize "somewhat") about our CB depth. After Sherm, Maxwell, and Lane, all the rest is unproven. I like SHead who plays cb/s, but how has Simon looked?
Terry Blount (3:18 PM)
The coaches are really high on Simon, a big guy who plays a lot like Browner. Phillip Adams could play into the mix, but I like Shead a lot because he can play CB and S. Pinkins, the rookie for San Diego State, has struggled so far.
dave (va beach)
how have the defensive backs been looking without kam? and who has been returning punts and kickoffs?
Terry Blount (3:19 PM)
Kickoff will be Harvin. They really haven't worked much on punts, but several guys are going to get a shot, starting with Earl Thomas. Harvin, Sherman, Bryan Walters and maybe Jeremy Lane will get a chance at it.
Brent (Kirkland Wa) [via mobile]
Thanks Terry for all of you're posts. You keep us updated on what's going on in Hawkville so well! My question is that with Percy Harvin healthy and with the Hawks amassing with what seems to be a very talented receiving core, do you see them at least throwing the ball a little more this year than in the last couple of years?
Terry Blount (3:22 PM)
Maybe a little more but not a lot more. Pete made it clear last night at the town hall meeting that they will continue to be a power-running team first and foremost. They have a lot more speed at WR now, but they never will be a team that throws the ball 40 or 50 times a game.
Greg (Tacoma, WA)
Will Christine Michael have a big part to play this season? Do you see Lynch being on the team in 2015?
Terry Blount (3:23 PM)
I think it's unlikely Lynch will be back in 2015. It's clear the coaches see Michael as the future at RB. Lynch likely will be a salary-cap casualty to help pay for Wilson's new deal next year.
Aaron (Seattle WA)
Knowing how Kaepernicks contract breaks down now , do you see Wilson getting a similar structure or is he going to get more of a straight up 20 mil per ?
Terry Blount (3:25 PM)
Kaepernick's deal has some unusual incentives based on playoff appearances, but he can make as much as $21 million a year. Wilson deal will depend some of what happens this season, but assuming the Seahawks are as good as expected, Wilson is in line to make over $23 million a year.
For the last couple years I've heard "Carpenter is in the best shape of his life", and "he is going to show why he was a first round pick". I am hearing it again this year. Is this the year that we actually see it?
Terry Blount (3:27 PM)
I can tell you he's slimmer than I've ever seen him. I think he knows this is a make or break year for him. He got the message when they didn't pick up his fifth-year option.
Drew (Never gets read)
I was very impressed with rookie Britt's tape against South Carolina and J. Clowney especially. How is he looking so far? Where you do you expect him to seat on the offensive line?
Terry Blount (3:29 PM)
Britt is competing to start at RT for now, but the Seahawks may see him as a LT in the future. He's looked great so far. If Britt wins the job at RT, there's a chance Bowie could start at one of the guard spots.
Aaron (Seattle WA)
Whats the Status of Bobby Wagner and his contract , do Line backers even get paid like a few years ago anymore ? I see defensive ends making all the money these days ,could you see them letting Wagner go to pay Wilson ?
Terry Blount (3:31 PM)
Wagner can renegotiate his rookie deal after this season. I know they want to keep him because he has become one of the best MLBs in the league. But it's true some guys will have to go to make room for Wilson's deal. Avril might be one. Wright and Malcolm Smith also will be free agents after this season.
Nik (Spanaway WA)
Hey Terry,With the RB by committee approach, what are the chances that some of the lesser known backs are getting opportunities in training camp to give the staff a chance to grade them?
Terry Blount (3:32 PM)
Good question Nik and it looks like Spencer Ware is that guy. Pete praised him last night and said they expect big things for him. But Lynch and Michael will get most of the carries in 2014.
Terry, I've read from you and one other that Pete's new contract is 9M per year. Was this ever released by the Seahawks?
Terry Blount (3:33 PM)
No, but it's somewhere in that neighborhood.
Craig (Burlington, MA)
What is the weakest position as of right now?
Terry Blount (3:34 PM)
There are no weak spots on this team, but they certainly have room for improvement on the O-Line.
Drew (Northern California)
How has Cassius Marsh looked so far? It seems as though he could be a very important draft pick for us with the release of Clemons. Also, Jeffcoat shining at all?
Terry Blount (3:37 PM)
Unfortunately, Marsh hasn't been at the OTAs, through no fault on his own. It's an odd rule where an NFL rookie can't participate in OTAs while his college semester is still in session. UCLA is on the quarter system. The really odd thing about it is Marsh already graduated. But Marsh is going to be part of the DE rotation this season. He can play outside and inside and he has a relentless nature, which he showed at rookie camp.
Talk to me about Toomer. Pete keeps praising him. How does he find his way on the field for any substantial # of plays in an all-of-the-sudden deep linebacking group?
Terry Blount (3:39 PM)
Korey is going to be in the mix at LB. he's doing everything right and he can play inside and outside. He's getting a lot of reps right now with Smith and Irvin out.
Not a 49er fan (San Francisco)
If/ when the Seahawks have another successful year could we see D. Bevell, Tom Cable and Dan Quinn be offered head coaching positions elsewhere? Or do you see them staying to build a "dynasty."
Terry Blount (3:41 PM)
It's only a matter of time until Bevell and Quinn get head coaching jobs, and frankly, I'd be surprised if either of them are back in 2015 if the Seahawks have another great season.
Harrison (utah) [via mobile]
With so much talk about Christine Michael, what will happen with Robert Turbin? He seems like a very strong back up.
Terry Blount (3:42 PM)
Turbin is an excellent blocker, which is his big advantage over Michael. But Turbin doesn't have the explosiveness or quickness that Michael has running the ball. Michael is the team's future at RB as far as starting.
Hi Terry, how do you see team utilizing Harvin (assuming healthy) number of touches split between receiving/rushing
Terry Blount (3:44 PM)
He won't get many rushing plays, other than end-around type plays, like he ran in the Super Bowl. He's going to start in the slot. He'll challenge defenses deep at times, but also be used a lot on bubble screens and hitch passes.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What NFL Team does the Seattle Seahawks Open the 2014 NFL Season with?
Terry Blount (3:46 PM)
Green Bay here in Seattle, which will bring up a lot of stories about the so-called Failed-Mary play from two years ago. We're going to do a special feature on it with all the players who were involved talking about it.
Chris should be banned for asking a question that can be easily found via Google! Come on Chris! Anyway, who do you have tonight? Spurs or Heat!?
Terry Blount (3:49 PM)
I'll say the Heat, but it should be a classic NBA Finals. I covered three NBA Finals, including the Rockets first title in 1994 over the Knicks. Funny story on that.I was watching Game 5 from the media room in Madison Square Garden when the network switched off the game to the OJ chase.
Seth (North Pole AK)
Do you see any of the UDFA's making the roster, if so which ones?
Terry Blount (3:50 PM)
Texas DE Jackson Jeffcoat has a decent shot to make it. And if I'm picking today, I'll take Keith Price as my No. 3 QB over Pryor.
Craig (Burlington, MA)
It's a little early but who will be a surprise cut?
Terry Blount (3:51 PM)
I'd say it might by Rice. Turbin might be iffy.
Got any info on Bruce Irvin? I know he just had surgery, but do you see him getting any starting time next year at DE or OLB?
Terry Blount (3:54 PM)
I think Bruce realizes he has to fight to keep a starting spot the defense. Smith and Wright are solid OLBs, and Toomer is coming fast. Avril and Bennett will start at DE. Irvin says he will be back in time for camp, but will see how he recovers from the hip surgery last week.
Brandon (San Diego)
How much longer until they try Pryor at another position? All the athletic talent in the world but the guy is not an NFL quality QB!
Terry Blount (3:55 PM)
He hasn't looked good in the OTAs, but the Seahawks haven't shown any indication yet they plan to try him at another spot.
Rocky (Spokane, Wash.)
All the Seahawks who signed deals say they're still motivated, with Sherman and Baldwin talking about the chips on their shoulders. But can you see any difference in their attitudes?
Terry Blount (3:57 PM)
Not those two guys. They are extremely competitive individuals. Sherm wants to prove he's the best CB in the game and Doug wants to be an elite receiver. I really don't think the money will change how they play.
what kind of suspension if any should we anticipate with Marshawn? My thoughts are 4 game. WHat say you?
Terry Blount (3:58 PM)
That would surprise me. He wasn't convicted of a DUI, only reckless driving.
Brandon (San Diego)
If Irvin has similar numbers to last years, will he be viewed as a bust?
Terry Blount (3:59 PM)
Yes, but it will depends on how much he plays. I think they should go back to letting Bruce do what he does best, which is rush the passer off the edge.
Keith H (Seattle)
Since we don't get to see them, are the rookie receivers REALLY that impressive? Should Rice really be that nervous?
Terry Blount (4:01 PM)
Obviously, Rice has an advantage as a veteran who knows the offense. But Norwood has tremendous upside potential. Lockette has better speed and Matthews has more size. So yes, he should be nervous.
Brandon (San Diego)
Terry, what is your opinion, will we ever see basketball again in Seattle?
Terry Blount (4:02 PM)
Ever is a long time. Yes, the NBA will return to Seattle, but it may take another 3 to 5 years.
With all the talk about Pryor and Price, How has Tarvaris Jackson looked in practice?
Terry Blount (4:02 PM)
TJ is going to be Wilson's back-up no matter what happens with the other QBs.
Terry Blount (4:04 PM)
Gotta run folks. Great questions again, as always. Have a great rest of the week and upcoming weekend. Peace.
