David Aldridge (2:02 PM)
Afternoon, everyone. It's July 1 and that means free agency is upon us...and there are a lot of questions in the queue..almost 1,700 so far...so let's get crackin'...
Now that the Rockets have the dynamic duo in Yao and T-mac,how far do you see them going in the playoffs with just a couple of FA signings?
David Aldridge (2:04 PM)
If they get a point guard with experience(i.e., Derek Fisher or Eric Snow), I think the Rockets could have a shot at getting past the first round. But the west is still loaded, make no doubt. Minnesota and SA are going to be tough, and you know Dallas and Sac are going to make moves.
Eric (Jackson, Ms.)
Do you think that Grant Hill injured ankle played a part in TMac wanting to be traded?
David Aldridge (2:06 PM)
Absolutely. Tracy got tired of waiting for Grant to get healthy. But that wasn't the only factor.
Ryan S, New Fairfield, CT
Why would a franchise like the New Jersey Nets, the 3 time defending atlantic divsion champs, let a fool like ratner buy them and destroy what they have worked for over the past 3 years? i dont understand this. I've been a Net fan for a long time and this is by far the stupidest move they could possibly make
David Aldridge (2:08 PM)
I haven't had a chance to speak to Ratner, but it certainly seems from those who have that he is planning to treat the Nets like a business and has limits to what he'll spend. But it's his money and he has the right to do with it what he wants.
With Shaq "representing" each both Dallas and Sacramento when roll was called at the players union meeting in Vegas, which team has a better shot?
David Aldridge (2:10 PM)
I still think Dallas, although it will probably have to involve at least a third and maybe a fourth team. Knowing Geoff Petrie, I just can't see him junking the style of play he really likes for a couple of years of Shaq.
whats the point of having Franchise and Nelson on the same team? do you see Orlando trading Nelson? I think he would have been a great addition to Houston
David Aldridge (2:11 PM)
Well, Nelson isn't ready to step in and play 35 minutes yet. He'll do just fine backing up Francis this season.
David, I got to know...who do the NUGS have the best chance of getting in FA? If you were them, who would you go after?
David Aldridge (2:13 PM)
The priority is a two guard--either Kobe or Quentin Richardson. But they'll make a move for KMart, also. If it were me, I would go after KMart.
Paul (New Jersey)
Hi David, How can you call Kenyon Martin the "preeminent" power forward in the NBA right now? He's not now, he wasn't yesterday and he will never be. Preeminent means "superior and notable above all others". And the others include Tim Duncan, J Oneal, Elton Brand, Zach Randolph and Dirk Nowitzki. Please tell me you were referring to the free agent market and not all of basketball. Thank you.
David Aldridge (2:16 PM)
What I was trying to say--inelegantly, obviously--was that Martin is the best available power forward right now. You're not going to see Duncan or Garnett or O'Neal on the open market. I do believe that Martin is a better "power" player than any of those guys, but I don't think he's a better all-around player.
Todd Pene (Grand Junction, CO)
Is there really any chance of the Jazz being a player in the free agency market? Players have a stigma about Salt Lake and who would the Jazz move? The only real prospect for movement I see is Carlos Arroyo. Or is the Jazz bound to forever be the team that other teams pawn off high contracts and future draft picks--A too old and too young team?
David Aldridge (2:17 PM)
Utah's a tough market for free agents, to be sure. The Jazz have opted to build through the draft, bringing in a lot of international players. But they're going after Martin.
Since Seattle doesn't have the cap room to sign any of the big-name free agents, who do you think they might go after via the trade? They've got some valuable commodities in Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Vlad Rodmonovic, and Ronald Murray. What kind of possibilities are out there for my Sonics?
David Aldridge (2:20 PM)
I think they'll move Radmonovic. I thought they'd shop Allen pretty hard, but he's just hired Lon Barry as an agent and now I think there's a chance he could sign an extension there.
chendo (austin, tx)
what's your take on devin brown of the spurs? he played some critical minutes in the playoffs, kept them in games and also young and athletic (see dunk vs.utah towards the end of the season). you thinks he's worth a 7-figure paycheck?
David Aldridge (2:21 PM)
I like Devin. He's under contract to the Spurs for one more year, though. Let's see how he plays next season before we give him a million dollars annually.
Tony (Minneapolis, MN)
What do you see the T-Wolves doing in this offseason? Can they keep Hudson, Hoiberg, and Hassell? Are they shopping Wally World around? And who's the center they're looking at this year?
David Aldridge (2:22 PM)
I think they'll keep Hoiberg and Hassell. Hudson will probably be harder to maintain. Szczerbiak just finished his base year status but I haven't heard anything regarding their shopping him.
Travis Keaau, HI
I love D.A.!! Can you please explain "base year status"? I'm an NBA junkie but I (shamefully) do not quite get it. Thanks!
David Aldridge (2:26 PM)
Don't be ashamed: it's a complicated, but important, concept. If a team is over the cap and either re-signs its own free agent or gives a player on his rookie contract an extension, and that player's salary is 120 percent more than it was the previous season, that player is considered a "base-year" player. All that means is that if the team wants to trade that player, his value in a trade is half of what his new salary is. So a player in either of those categories that signs a new deal that pays him $5 million in the first year of that new deal, he would only be "worth" $2.5 million in a trade.
Greg (Vegas via NY)
hey DA, im a diehard Knick fan out here in the desert and was wondering besides jamal crawford who else we might try to get? Swift? thanks-take care
David Aldridge (2:28 PM)
I think Dampier. It wouldn't surprise me if they had interest in Dale Davis, either.
John (Eugene, OR)
The Portland Trailblazers made some interesting choices in last week's draft with their 22,23, and 46th picks. It seems they could have gotten different players which could make a diffence this year. How do these players fit into current roster?
David Aldridge (2:31 PM)
The quick answer is they don't. The Blazers are trying to add young players who'll be the core of their team in coming years while they try to move some of the guys playing ahead of them now. With Abdur-Rahim, Davis and Stoudamire all up after this season, Portland is prepping for the future.
Andrew from Boston
Good afternoon David. Like many others, I was intently watching the NBA Draft, anxiously awaiting who my beloved Celts were gonna draft. Okay, besides Pierce, there aren't really any athletes or height on the roster. Al Jefferson's gonna be a work in progress; why would they go out and select small guards? Would you have entertained trades for Pierce to get one of the top 3 picks? What possibile trade scenarios could they have acted upon? Thanks for your time.
David Aldridge (2:32 PM)
I like Allen. I'm not sure about West in the first round, especially for them. They had a chance to get involved with Dallas for #5 and chose not to.
Steve (Atlanta, GA)
How do you think the Hawks will fill out their roster? We can't have Alan Henderson as our starting center, can we?!?
David Aldridge (2:35 PM)
No. I think you'll see the Hawks re-sign Rebraca, and be active for some of the second-tier free agent bigs like Brian Skinner. I'm sure they'll make calls to the Martins and Mehmet Okurs, but I don't think they'll be very successful.
Trey (Hammond, LA)
Hey DA give the Hornets a little attention. First Scott and Reed (leadership), and then adding draft pick Smith(youth), what's the chance of them dumping Mash and Wesley and finding a quality SF to finish revamping this team?
David Aldridge (2:37 PM)
I think it'll be hard to move Mash, just because a) he's coming off an injury, and b) he has an opt-out after next season. I know the Hornets would like to upgrade themselves at the two. Maybe they could get a guy like Larry Hughes, who would be good in a two-guard front if Byron decides to go that way.
Mohamed (Columbus, Ohio)
Hey D.A. Do you think Sam Mitchell can folllow in Terry Porter's success and lead the Raptors into the playoffs. Do you also think that he is the right coach to revive Vince's career and help blossom Chris Bosh into one of the best big men in the game? Thanks
David Aldridge (2:39 PM)
I think Sam was a great choice. Most young, first-time coaches don't have much to work with. I still believe the Raptors have some potential. Sam gets big respect from most guys around the league and I'm sure he'll get the same from Vince.
Steve Adler (Westmoreland, NH)
Hey David, Shouldn't the Celtics be way under the cap now that Vin Baker is off the books?
David Aldridge (2:41 PM)
Unfortunately for you, know. The Cs still have more than $46 million committed for next season, which puts them right on the brink of the projected cap. Pierce, Raef, Ricky Davis and Chucky Atkins take up around $32 million all by themselves.
Are you colorblind? You mentioned that you'd be suprised if Kobe was in anything but Forum Blue and Gold next year. You do know that the Lakers wear purple, right? So do the Minnesota Vikings, Kansas State, and Northwestern.
David Aldridge (2:43 PM)
Obviously, you're a kid. Or you'd know that's a tribute to Mr. Chick Hearn and to the Old Man, Jack Kent Cooke, who owned the Lakers when you were probably in diapers--and who insisted that purple be referred to as "Forum Blue." As a fan of the Old Man, I'm honored to carry on the tradition.
With all of the drop-outs from the men's Olympic basketball team-particularly with losing Bibby and Kidd, why hasn't Steve Francis ever been mentiioned as a possible replacement? Thanks!
David Aldridge (2:44 PM)
Kristi, it's a great question, and I've never been able to get a straight answer out of my guys on the selection committee. Especially since Steve has been so public about his desire to represent his country. I think that's something that should be celebrated.
Eric ( Ann Arbor)
any news on rasheed and the pistons
David Aldridge (2:45 PM)
I've been told Rasheed probably won't make a decision until after the Fourth. He wants to spend the holiday with his family and hash out all the scenarios.
Who should the Wizard try to sign or trade? I think the team needs a backup SG and C.
David Aldridge (2:46 PM)
I've heard they have an interest in Erick Dampier...but I don't see them in the running. The only positive for them is that Dampier just hired Dan Fegan, who delivered Arenas to Washington last year. Those connections can help.
Would you let your wife dictate where you're gonna work while selling your house?
David Aldridge (2:48 PM)
Depends on the house. And the wife.
DA, are the Grizz going to make any major additions in July? If so, who are the candidates?
David Aldridge (2:48 PM)
Again, Dampier is the name. And the Grizz have some pieces they can put together in a possible trade.
what can piston fans look for from carlos delfino?
David Aldridge (2:50 PM)
Look for him to be a strong third guard for them next season. He's 6-6, 6-7 and he's really quick and long.
I think the Cavs have done a nice job improving their shooting (Jackson, Pavlovic), but do you see them adding a piece through free agency? Brent Barry? Brian Cardinal?
David Aldridge (2:51 PM)
They have some room--a little more than $3 million--but I don't know if that's going to be enough to entice a mid-level kind of player like Barry.
Hey DA, I can't see the Lakers wanting Nash. If the Lakers are unwilling to give a 32-year old Shaq an extension why would they give a 30-year old Nash a 5-7 year contract. And would Dallas risk playing a rookie pg alongside Shaq? Thanks
David Aldridge (2:53 PM)
If it's a sign and trade, taking base-year into account, Dallas isn't offering more than four years, from what I've heard. As for Harris, the Mavs are really high on him, and think he's ready to play now.
George (San Antonio)
Despite my living in SA, I am a huge Suns fan! How are they going to do next season if they can sign Kobe to a max offer? Thanks!
David Aldridge (2:55 PM)
I think they'd be pretty doggone good, George. They have Marion on a max deal, would just be starting Kobe on one and would still have a couple of years before they have to pay Amare. As long as the deals are staggered and not more or less concurrent--which is the problem New Jersey now has with Kidd, Martin and Jefferson--I think the Suns would be willing to do it.
David Aldridge (2:56 PM)
Folks, the hour has flown by. Thanks so much for your interest and questions. We finished with more than 2,300 questions in the queue. Thanks and enjoy the Fourth weekend.
