Chad Ford (1:00 PM)
Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. 8 days until the NBA Draft. Tons of workouts, tons of trade talk ... lots to discuss. Let's roll ...
Russell (Minneapolis, MN)
What's the latest on Kevin Love being traded? Is Boston the best offer (if so, who would Minny take at No. 6)?
Chad Ford (1:04 PM)
I was told by a good source in Minnesota that as of Monday, the Celtics had the best offer on the table and were the favorites to land Love. I think Bill Simmons reported something similar today. I know the Boston Herald just said the opposite -- that the Warriors and Nuggets had made better offers. But I'm skeptical. The Warriors won't include Klay Thompson (at least not yet). And the Nuggets? They have the 11th pick. They have Kenneth Faried. But what else? Gallinari? Hickson? I don't think that's a better offer than the Celtics.
Ian (Youngstown, OH) [via mobile]
Does it seem like a forsure thing that the Cavs are going to take Embiid #1?
Chad Ford (1:07 PM)
Nothing is for sure. Especially with the Cavs who didn't decide on Bennett until the day of the draft and switched their choice to Dion Waiters after the draft had begun. But I would say he's the heavy favorite after he impressed Dan Gilbert in the workout and, from what I can gather, didn't generate any red flags on the physical (there's conflict info out here on this and I'm trying to make sure ...very difficult to get accurate info on stuff like this). However, Wiggins is Cleveland today working out. Jabari is in on Friday. They could still change their mind.
Michael Haspel (Tampa)
Are trade talks between Sixers and Cavs going anywhere for #1 #3 and Young
Chad Ford (1:08 PM)
It's an intriguing deal for the Cavs but only if Embiid is there at three. The problem is I think there's a good chance that the Bucks take Embiid at No. 2 if he's still on the board. The Cavs like Parker, but Parker and Thad Young aren't a good match together.
If the Cavs feel they have a legitimate shot at LeBron, how does that impact their draft plans?
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
I don't think they'll know before the draft. So I think you just have to draft the best player and realize you can always use them as an asset later if LeBron comes and you need to add veterans ...
I am concerned that nobody is talking about the Bucks taking Wiggins at 2. How concerned should Sixers fans be?
Chad Ford (1:11 PM)
They could. They were very impressed with his workout in Santa Barbara and he's coming back to workout there in Milwaukee later this week. I think Embiid and Parker (who worked out there yesterday) are still the most likely picks for them, but there has been growing momentum toward Wiggins.
The Bucks seem to have some tradable assets like Ersan, Larry Sanders, Henson, etc.. Anything out there pointing to them trading back into the lottery with a team like the Lakers, Sacramento, Denver, etc using those assets?
Chad Ford (1:13 PM)
There is a lot of interest in Sanders right now. They might be able to use that (or John Henson) to get another pick in the draft. Point guard is an area they'd like more help at and there are several intriguing point guards a little later in the draft. I know the Bucks would love another Lottery pick, but the cost is high right now.
If Embiid and Wiggins are gone at #3... how do the Sixers rank Exum, Vonleh, Parker?
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
Still trying to figure that out. Parker is an obvious fit. Fits a need and can be a go to scorer for them. They have a strong affinity for Exum however and could end up taking him at three if Wiggins is gone. He's not a perfect fit next to Michael Carter-Williams, but I'm not sure the Sixers care. They want the best player long-term and they can worry about fit (or potentially a Carter-Williams trade) later.
Who do the Magic like more exum or smart, and are they decided? I feel like there are conflicting reports
Chad Ford (1:16 PM)
There have been. They've been big fans of Marcus Smart, but I've heard neither of his workouts have been particularly strong. The Exum workout was a wow I'm told. But so was the Noah Vonleh workout. While I don't completely rule out Smart there, I think it will either be Vonleh or Exum. Some of their choice may come down to who they believe will be available to them at 12.
Derek (Salt Lake)
How much do you think the Jazz would be willing to give up for the 2nd spot to likely land Parker?
Chad Ford (1:18 PM)
I think it would cost them, at a minimum, Derrick Favors and the No. 5 pick. And they'd have to take back Larry Sanders. The Sanders contract isn't a bad one if you think this year's issues off the court have been resolved. He's a great shot blocker and rebounder. But that's a pretty high cost to move up.
Any truth to the rumor that the Jazz have zeroed in on Jabari?
Chad Ford (1:19 PM)
I know what Jazz fans want. They want Jabari. But I actually think Embiid and Wiggins may be higher on their boards. If they move up, don't assume it's for Parker. And please Jazz fans, don't burn down Dennis Lindsay's home if he passed on him. You'll love Wiggins too.
What were the Celtics offering for Love? Also, what makes Boston think Love would resign?
Chad Ford (1:21 PM)
6, 17, future No. 1s from the Nets + Sullinger and/or Olynk. I think Boston is one of the three or four places Love would be happy to land. I think he'd re-sign.
Todd (Irvine) [via mobile]
From what I'm hearing, Randle had a stellar workout with Lakers. Is it silly that someone that crazy talented with developed skills would drop to 7?
Chad Ford (1:23 PM)
I heard his workouts have all been good. There's nothing wrong, in the short term with his foot. Teams are worried about the placement of a screw in his foot and think it could turn into a long-term issue. The talk about surgery is as a preventive measure. However, some teams have more issues than other with his foot. I think he's a strong possibility in LA. Him or Marcus Smart.
Chris (Quincy, IL) [via mobile]
Better Kings long term PG option: Elfrid Payton through the draft or Dennis Schroeder via Trade?
Chad Ford (1:27 PM)
I think Payton is a better prospect. If I was doing my personal Big Board, he'd be No. 10. So much talent there obscured by playing at a small conference. Reminds me of Lillard in that the lack of exposure artificially lowering his stock.
Josh (Hornets Nest)
Last year Hornets surprised a lot of people by taking Zeller at 4, who is the hornets sleeper pick at 9?
Chad Ford (1:28 PM)
I know they like Doug McDermott a lot -- though his workout there wasn't stellar. Nik Stauskas, Gary Harris are other possibilities. James Young has an outside shot too. They want shooters obviously.
Rowan (Seattle) [via mobile]
I feel like Saric can be this year's Antetokounmpo. Is he more likely to slip to 15 or rise to 6?
Chad Ford (1:29 PM)
Teams still waiting from a definitive answer from his camp about his intentions next year. Is he returning to Europe or is he coming directly to the NBA? I think Saric's camp may be playing this by ear. A few teams he'd come over now for. A few teams he'd prefer to continue to develop in Europe.
What scenario is best for the future of Anthony Bennett's development: Embiid; Wiggins; Parker; or trading the #1?
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
Embiid. BTW I heard Anthony Bennett is finally in great shape. I still think he has a lot of potential. If he really works hard this summer he could still be a good pick for the Cavs.
What do you think are the Hawks' options at 15?
Chad Ford (1:33 PM)
They were very high on Kristaps Porzingis and were bummed he's out. Jusuf Nurkic is a possibility there. Dario Saric if he falls. I also hear they are one of the teams high on Kyle Anderson of UCLA. Mike Budenholzer coached Boris Diaw in San Antonio. He would know how to use him.
What are your thought on Damien Inglis.
Chad Ford (1:34 PM)
He has some buzz now ... really ever since the Nike Hoop Summit. I think he goes 25-36. Somewhere in that range.
Ryan (Louisiana) [via mobile]
Why is James Young's stick slipping?
Chad Ford (1:34 PM)
It's not. He could go as high as Charlotte at 9. I think he probably doesn't get past the Suns at 14 or the Bulls at 16.
How did you manage to do a radio interview in Philly while chatting at the same time?
Chad Ford (1:35 PM)
Pre-tapped the interview LOL. I'm a good multi-tasker, but not that good
Drew (Ann Arbor)
Do you really think Stauskas drops to 13? I feel like if anything a trade by the bulls or celtics have him going at 11
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
I think several teams are trying to trade up and he's one of the targets. However ... he sprained his shoulder in workouts, missed a few and hasn't returned back 100 percent in his recent workouts so he might slide just a tad. Can't see Minnesota passing on him however.
What have you been hearing about Mitch McGary? Has he done any workouts/physicals with teams yet?
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
Last I checked, agent was getting him a physical but he wasn't quite ready to workout. That obviously affects his draft stock. But I still think the long-term prognosis is OK.
If Magic go Exum with 4, who are top 2-3 they would want at 12?
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
Saric, Stauskas, James Young ...
Michael (Texas) [via mobile]
Who is a likely pick at 17 for the Celtics? would Napier/Hairston be a reach? Would LaVine be a good pick if he's available?
Chad Ford (1:41 PM)
Napier is getting looks as high as Orlando at 12. Bulls and Celtics are also in the mix for him. So that's not a reach. Hairston is getting looks from Minnesota at 13 on ... so he's not a reach either. LaVine is great if you are swinging for the fences. He has more upside than either Napier or Hairston. But he's risky too.
Ryan S. (Brooklin)
Why is Tyler Ennis slipping?
Chad Ford (1:42 PM)
Not sure he's slipping. Just a lot of competition at his position and I see Elfrid Payton and possibly Shabazz Napier moving up a bit based on workouts. Ennis isn't a workout type of guy. He's a game guy. I doubt he gets past Toronto at 20.
what teams are likely to take Rodney Hood?
Chad Ford (1:44 PM)
He's in the mix as high as Minnesota at 13. Probably doesn't get past Memphis at 22. His stomach issues have flared up again (he couldn't finish the workout in Charlotte the other day) which obviously doesn't help his draft stock.
could Jordan Adams sneak into 1st round?
Chad Ford (1:45 PM)
Yes. The analytics guys love him. He's getting multiple looks in the 20s.
Brian (Philadelphia, PA)
Where will Adriean Payne end up?
Chad Ford (1:45 PM)
Minnesota at 13 sounds like his ceiling. OKC at 21 is probably his floor.
Michael (Texas) [via mobile]
What teams like Gary Harris? is he a lottery lock?
Chad Ford (1:46 PM)
I think so. He probably starts at Charlotte at 9. Sixers are interested at 10. Nuggets at 11 are also fans. Minnesota at 13 and Phoenix at 14. Doubt he gets past Hawks at 15.
How concerned are teams that Isaiah Austin's eye issues will hamper his development? Could he play SF at the next level?
Chad Ford (1:48 PM)
I'm not sure how much the eye issues are affecting his draft stock. I know there were some major concerns from some teams about the physical he took at the Combine. Several teams that have reviewed those physicals told me they thought he'd slide all the way out of the draft because of them. I'm not sure I'm willing to go that far, but I don't know the details of what they are concerned about.
Jarnell Stokes at 22. Seems awful high?
Chad Ford (1:51 PM)
Not really. The analytics love him. Both physically and statistically he's very, very close to Julius Randle who people are convinced might be an All-Star someday. I think he's one of the most underrated prospects in the draft.
Why is Jordan Clarkson moving up the mock?
Chad Ford (1:52 PM)
He has great size and athletic ability for his position and after a rocky second half of the season at Missouri virtually every team I speak with thinks Clarkson has been terrific in workouts. I think he goes somewhere between the Bulls at 19 and the Clippers at 28.
Am I the only one thinking Dougie McBuckets is going to be another Adam Morrison?
Chad Ford (1:53 PM)
Yes. Doug is a much better shooter and a better athlete than Morrison.
Michael (Texas) [via mobile]
does Spencer Dinwiddie have first round potential?
Chad Ford (1:54 PM)
Yes and several teams are looking at him in the late first. Had he not torn his ACL, he would've been a lock for the first round. A team like the Thunder or Spurs could snatch him up.
You touched upon it before in previous chats, but how do you feel about your sources using you as a means of smokescreen. Is there a sense of doubt once you know someone has used you as a means of sending out mixed information?
Chad Ford (1:56 PM)
It happens. I remember. So it only happens once. If a source lies to me, they aren't a source I will quote or use anymore. It is very difficult to get accurate information the next week. But I try to use track record of sources as the gauge.
Andre (Santa Monica)
Does Glenn Robinson III land in R1? What teams are looking at him after his strong combine?
Chad Ford (1:57 PM)
He's had some good workouts. I know several teams in the 20s have him in the mix. Houston could be an intriguing landing spot for him.
Chad Ford (1:59 PM)
Have to run everyone. We will do this again next week the day before the draft! In the meantime, check out Mock Draft 8.0 + my Top 25 draft prospects of the last 15 years on ESPN.com today. So much more good stuff coming!
