Chat With the Suns' Casey Jacobsen

His improved accuracy has also resulted in an increase in playing time, which has given him a chance to show off his work ethic, defensive intensity and all-around hustle.
"The biggest difference between last year and this year, besides just having another year of experience, is consistent minutes," the Stanford product said. "I don't know any player on the planet that wouldn't benefit from getting consistent playing time."
With the return of his weekly Casey Off the Bench segment on XTRA Sports 910, the former communications major has been getting consistent minutes on the radio, too. The 23-year-old guard has shown a knack for entertaining listeners and articulating his views on everything from the state of the Suns to his beloved Cardinal's ouster in the recently concluded NCAA tournament.
Although you won't be able to hear him online, Jacobsen will share some more of his opinions and stories during a chat with fans on Suns.com this Monday, April 12. Send in your questions now or log on at 1 p.m. local time (4 p.m. ET) to participate live.

What do you see your role with the team being as you gain more NBA experience?
Casey Jacobsen (4:02 PM)
I hope that my role with the team continues to grow with the Suns. I know I'm not a superstar player, and I'm fine with being a supporting player, but I hope to improve to the point where I can get more minutes and contribute to the Suns in a big way.

Hi CaseyWhat was it like for you your very first NBA game?
Casey Jacobsen (4:03 PM)
If I can remember that far back, I have trouble remembering what I did last week. I remember my first preseason game was in New Jersey and when we ran out for warmups I was so excited. I felt so lucky and fortunate. I don't remember how many I scored, but I did get a three which was good, but we lost the game.
Shannon, AZ
How frustrating is it for you to not make the playoffs this year? Also, I was wondering what weaknesses the team has from a player's perspective. Which issues do you personally feel the Suns need to make? Thanks
Casey Jacobsen (4:05 PM)
It's very frustrating to not make the playoffs because we're good enough. There are some teams who are not good enough, but we are. Even though we traded Stephon and Penny, we were good enough to make the playoffs. And after last year, where we proved we were good enough, it hurts now, to not be going back. It's frustrating. As far as our weaknesses, we had some adversity, trades and the coach being fired, our chemistry wasn't exactly where it needs to be, and that contributed to our record being what it is this year.

Casey, I'm your biggest fan! It has been much noted how you reworked your jump shot over the summer. How much work did you actually put into it, and what type of drills did you do?
Casey Jacobsen (4:07 PM)
More than you know. I watched film early in the summer and found that I expended too much energy shooting threes and that hurt me late in games. I didn't shoot enough with my legs, I used too much of my upper body. I tweaked my jumper a little bit, so I use more legs, have a quicker release and an improved arch. It's worked out well and I feel better when taking shots.
Tiffany (Los Angeles)
Who has influenced your basketball career the most? What made you pick Stanford as a college you wanted to play on?
Casey Jacobsen (4:09 PM)
My two older brothers, Adam and Brock influenced my game most, because I saw them so much. Michael Jordan was my favorite, of course, but my brothers I watched hundreds of games live, and I wanted in the worst way to be better than them when I was growing up. They were good players and they pushed me to be better. It was an easy choice to pick Stanford. Stanford is the best combination of academics and athletics on the West Coast and I also thought I had the best chance to play alot with them.
Sam (Peoria)
Hey Casey... who do you think deserves to win this year's Dan Majerle Hustle Award and why?
Casey Jacobsen (4:10 PM)
I think Jake Voskuhl deserves it. One, because he's my buddy and two, because we've really missed him when he's out. He has to go against some of the biggest players in the world every night. You can't give it to a guard, you got to give it to a guy banging the big guys under the boards.
Kendrick James (Phoenix)
Since you have an Commnication Degree, Are youlooking for a career in broadcasting ? Thank-you
Casey Jacobsen (4:11 PM)
Yes, I am interested in that field. I want to be around sports forever, and I realize I won't be in the NBA for 25 years. Either broadcasting or even in some other way, I want to stay around basketball after my playing career.
Abby (Peoria)
I know you watch a lot of sports. Did you get a chance to see Phil Mickelson win the Master's yesterday? What were your thoughts on the ASU product's first major?
Casey Jacobsen (4:12 PM)
Yes, I did watch the Masters. I was so excited for Phil. It's an amazing story, I was nervous for him on 18. My heart was pounding. It's so awesome to see a great thing happen to a good person. I don't know him personally, but everything I hear about him is good. Maybe now he can win a few more majors and solidify his place as one of the top golfers.
Bryan Anderson~Minnesota
Casey, what was it like being suddenly put in the spotlight after Marbury and Hardaway were traded to New York? Did you feel any pressure trying to fill that void in the backcourt?
Casey Jacobsen (4:14 PM)
It was a big change to trade away our franchise player. Stephon had the ball in his hands 75-percent of the time. It was a big change for our team. It gave other guys a chance to hold the rock more and make plays. Joe Johnson stepped up at the point and had a strong year. It was a big change for our team.
Cherylene, Glendale
Hey Casey. I'm a big fan of yours. Its was a big let down to me and a lot of people when Stanford lost in the NCAA early. How do you feel about it?
Casey Jacobsen (4:16 PM)
Oh no, I knew someone was gonna ask about this. I felt so bad for the guys on the team. I know how hard you work all season. They worked so hard, had so much success, winning 23 straight games. But if you don't win in the tournament, nobody remembers. But still, Stanford had a great year. I feel bad for them. That's the NCAA tournament for you, it's so unpredictable.
Rick (phx)
When you take it to the hole, who's the person you least want to see standing in the lane?
Casey Jacobsen (4:17 PM)
Oh man. There is alot of guys I don't want to see! If I had to choose one or two it'd be Ben Wallace or Shaq. Ben, not because he's so big, but you think you have room with Ben, and then he just shows up and swats the ball into the third row. Shaq is just the biggest man on the face of the Earth, so you never want to see him down low under any circumstances. Nobody does.
Buck Bristol, VA
Who would you like to see the Suns draft this year?
Casey Jacobsen (4:18 PM)
They don't pay me to make those choices. I hope we can get a tough player. We have a lot of talented guys, but I wouldn't mind a teammate who wants to get down and dirty and knows the entire game. I guy who can play a complete game. Those types of players really help a team develop early and we need help right now, not five years from now.
Tony C. (Phoenix)
Hey Casey. You did awsome this Season. I had no idea but, you improved alot this year, and I want to congratulate you on that. Besides that, with this 2003-2004 Season winding down, whats your plans for the summer?
Casey Jacobsen (4:20 PM)
Thanks for your support and kinds words. I feel like I have improved and I hope to get better this coming offseason. My role with the Suns this season didn't allow me to do some things that I think I can do in the future, and I will work on those things in the summer and get them into my game. I want to apply those skills into my game and concentrate on them and come back in four months a much better player.
Casey Jacobsen (4:21 PM)
Thank you for all your support and for chatting with me today. On behalf of myself and all my teammates with the Suns, I'd like to thank you. I also want to say that we will be back next year ready to compete. We want to thank you for your support by playing hard and getting wins on the court. Thanks again.
