Chat with Ralph Wiley
Jason S. Indianapolis
Do you agree with Dr. Jack, that the Detroit bench is more talented than Indy?
Ralph Wiley (2:58 PM)
First off, well pilgrims -- IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME! Now that we've got that out of the way, Dr. Jack is a piece of work, Jason. Hoop maven and fitness nut. Now that I've skirted the issue for long enough -- I think Detroit is on the whole a better team than Indiana. I'll explain why in this week's Page 2 column on Friday. Indy has some skilled players of length on the bench, Bender, Harrington, Croshere, but I think their problem against Detroit will be Indy's point guards against Detroit's 1s, and O'Neal vs. Wallace & Wallace.
Harrison L-W, Mexico
I think Kobe is more like a symbol of real life for all of us who, unlike the adoring fans of sports, go beyond the hype and see that it is indeed hard to find your own voice and still be succesful. Yout thoughts? By the way, I am still looking forward to the seconf part of the Seven Voyages of Kobe.
Ralph Wiley (3:00 PM)
Harrison, I think we're already in the Third Voyage of Kobe's Seven, and nearing the Fourth, the Slough of Despnd, aren't we? It's kind of panning out that way, isn't it?
why u hatin on kobe
Ralph Wiley (3:01 PM)
I don't hate, I elevate. I said Phil should put Kobe on Parker. Kobe got on Parker at critical junctures in Game Three, will have to continue to do that for the Lakers to have a chance against the Spurs.
Hey R-Dub, When are you going to take some time to write a book on writing? We need you to teach young wordsmiths how to turn prose into poetry.
Ralph Wiley (3:02 PM)
But all that would do is make the prose unsellable, Mike. (Thanks anyway).
Kevin (Mini-Apple-ish, MN)
I don't want to trouble you, but I've got two questions, R.W. -- The Kings have been crafty in defensing KG. Flip will work with KG to 'counter' and they'll get KG's turnovers down and the offensive production (FG% and assists) up. I still like the T-Wolves in this series. Are you with me? What are your thoughts about the Kings/Wolves series?
Ralph Wiley (3:08 PM)
Kev -- I think the Wolves shouldn't waste much more time with the Kings -- have them out of there in six. I know it seems counter-intuitive, because the Kings won Game 1 and had Game 2 in hand until Sam I Am went off. I just think the Kings have no answer for KG if The Big TIcket takes the onus of O and D through him. He doesn't always have to shooit it, but he has to decides who shootst. With Sprewell on Bibby, no Bobby Jackson, Sam, KG and you and me should keg the Kings, Kev. That's called alliteration. Usually, it's somewhat boring, and somewhat lazy.
what are you finals predictions?
Ralph Wiley (3:09 PM)
MC Welk (SLC)
May I unbowdlerize your comment about poetry?
Ralph Wiley (3:10 PM)
Please do. But let me put on a hat first.
R-Dub, much love from A-Town. I need to know the 411 onthe Spurs, do you think they'll be able to get T-Dunc involved in the next game? Kinda has to happen for them to be able to close it out at home.
Ralph Wiley (3:14 PM)
Kinda cocky there, Mikey. Lakers put the Spurs in check by putting Kobe in Parker's grille. Now if I'm Pop I counter with the knight to K4 -- Manu Ginoboli and Devin Brown hopping around in the mid-range. Let Duncan have the option of working off that as well as the high screen-and-roll with Parker. Really, it should go seven.
So, how 'bout them Knicks?
Ralph Wiley (3:16 PM)
Sweetney has to play. Move Kurt Thomas. You listening, Isiah? . . .Apparently not.
Alex Franks (San Diego)
Dr. Wiley -where have you been on the NBA this season..we got what...5 to maybe 10 articles??? ESPN2 sell your tickets??
Ralph Wiley (3:20 PM)
It's the quality of the writing about the NBA (or anything), not the quantity. This is the time of year when it gets most interesting to me, conference seminfinals onward. The highest level of hoop in the world. Do an All-Star report & Uncsenored Thought Balloons, before that a Xtmas report; that's when I start watching the season in earnest, to check out themes.
Thomaz Alexandre (Rio De Janeiro, Brasil)
Is Dogman into LOTR? Please ask him, assuming Duncan is Gandalf and Parker is Frodo, could my neighbour Manu be Legolas? How do you like him?
Ralph Wiley (3:23 PM)
Dogman is made clueless by LOTR -- myself, I loved the effects, truly sick, totally absurd, but I must say, all 3 of the series could've been made into one great, 3 1/2 hour movie. Sort of like Kill Bill should've been one classic 2:50 film. Frankly, I was more impressed by Stephen Frears' "Dirty Pretty Things." .
Is Dallas going to be broken up in the off-season?
Ralph Wiley (3:24 PM)
Let's hope so. Love Dirk, though.
Tom (KC, MO)
R-Dub, Next to Sports Guy, you are the tops. (Sorry but I haven't seen you go from covering NBA to Friends on a week-by-week basis.) Great article on Kobe and Garnett. If the two were teammates, would they combine to make the Good/Bad yet unstoppable Jordan?
Ralph Wiley (3:27 PM)
The first part of this message is not what got it posted, obviously. But the second part of the message was so intriguing I had to post it. Kobe and KG? Let's put it this way -- it's a problem I'd love to have.
Yo, Ralph - do you watch Mixed Martial Arts (e.g. Ultimate Fighting, Pride)? I'm a huge fan of boxing and MMA, but would say that MMA is even "tougher" than boxing. What do ya think?
Ralph Wiley (3:30 PM)
Yorkis, in Ultimate FIghting, K1, what have you, guys go three 3-minute rounds and they are freaking exhausted. Try 12.
Mark - Manteca, Ca
with chris Mullin running 'thangs in Golden State now, do you see him attracting a big ticket player? Maybe Kobe will look at the Warriors? Hmmmmm?
Ralph Wiley (3:33 PM)
Tthe Warriors already passed on drafting Kobe in the first place. Took a guy named Todd Fuller instead. Dave Twardzik said Kobe "didn't catch my eye." Oh really,
Your take on the top 5 players in the league, not taking into account order or position
Ralph Wiley (3:39 PM)
Fascinating. Top five how? To start five different teams? To play together as a symphony on one team? I'd love to take Jason Kidd, nobody sees the floor and runs a team better, but Jason can't shoot it the way I'd like, the way, say, Bibby can. I suppoose I'd just go with size -- Shaq at 5, Tim B. Dunkin at 4, Dirk at 3, KG at 2 and believe it or not LeBron at 1 instead of Kobe. Better handle. I'd want Kobe as a sixth man, coming in only if we're down ten and more and with instructions to put it up and get us back in the game. Kobe's life with me would be one long heat check.
Harold (Los Angeles)
Is the Laker saga more Shakespearian or Tennessee Williamsesque?
Ralph Wiley (3:41 PM)
Definitely Tennessee, or maybe August Wilson. O.J saga was Shakespearean.
You have to pick one now. AI or Marbury and why. I go with Starbury cause he's healthier and can play with a team.
Ralph Wiley (3:45 PM)
You live a little and die a little with both, but that's eetrtainment. better than having to watch Tinsley or Tyronn Lue. You can win with either Alley I. or Stef, but not as the No. 1 option, yet, if they aren't the No. 1 option, is it a problem? In Allen's case, I don't think so. I'm not sure about Stef yet.
What should the Rockets do this offseason to help themselves?
Ralph Wiley (3:46 PM)
Wrap Yao in cotton.
Mel Kiper the 3rd (Town Hall)
Okafor or Howard or someone else?
Ralph Wiley (3:48 PM)
Okafor for now. I would say Howard for ten years from now, but who can afford to plan that far ahead? 15 minutes, pilgrims.
Ryan (Royal Oak, MI)
Aren't teams supposed to play good defense? I can't tell you how many "experts" have said that they don't want Detroit in the Finals because it will be a low scoring game. That is rediculous. Why is Detroit getting punished for doing their job? And, why aren't these "experts" more upset at the other teams for not being able to find a way to score?
Ralph Wiley (3:49 PM)
Good questions all. Ignorance, mostly.
Chris (Norfolk, Va.)
Just curious: Kerry or Bush, R-Dub? Why?
Ralph Wiley (3:50 PM)
Dave - Sactown CA
Stop hating on my Kings. They should be up 2-0 going back to Arco. This thing is going to 7 Games, the NBA will make it happen.
Ralph Wiley (3:51 PM)
But it's so much fun to hate on your Kings. By the way, the Maloofs will be surprised to hear about your recent takeover.
Vikram ( Bangloor, India)
Listen International Fan answer a question please I watch gamecast to follow my favorite sport. Who is going to win the King-Wolves tonight!
Ralph Wiley (3:52 PM)
Whoever plays better.
Alex Franks (San Diego)
You want a STRAIGHT answer: ask Karl Malone or Charles Barkley...?
Ralph Wiley (3:54 PM)
I've heard that, Karl. Mostly from you. I didn't know you could type for yourself. Wait a minute. Chuckster. . .is that you?
RW, you're spectactular! Even if they won't be happy with anything but a trophy, what defines a successful season for the Wolves in your eyes?
Ralph Wiley (3:55 PM)
Game 7 of conference finals, at least. Even if they lose it.
Alex Franks (San Diego)
Ok, a tough one... Reggie Miller, Jason Kidd - Ferengi(s)???? AND do the Republicans know about Sam Cassel the ball hadling FETUS!!!
Ralph Wiley (3:55 PM)
Reggie Miller -- Jason Kidd -- Ferengi -- scary good.
steve (san diego, CA)
Not one point I can argue about the Good and Bad Jordan Heirs of the NBA. But it upsets me that many people may not be seeing true heir to the throne when its right in front of thier eyes. If Duncan carries the spurs towards thier 3rd title this year, how can you not call him THE JORDAN........?
Ralph Wiley (4:00 PM)
Duncan is the best anonymous player I've ever seen, the best quiet player I've seen. Even better than Silk Wilkes as a quiet, deceptively great player. No question.
Tonya Atlanta GA
I just wanted to say I am the biggest KG fan in the universe and I appreciate the honesty of the Dogman. He hit it right on the head. I would like to call out KG and tell him would the real baller from the dirty South please "man up" and take your rightful place as the King of this shit!
Ralph Wiley (4:04 PM)
Tonya has a gift for vernacular, doesn't she? So totally authentic until it has to be. And not a bad read on her ballers, either. Well pilgrims, I've enjoyed you. Until next time, stay up, and stay down.,
