IRL Chat: Chevy 500 Winner!
![]() |
However, the hottest driver at the moment is Adrian Fernandez, who has won the last two straight races and three of the past five overall. Whoever wins, a close race will almost certainly be on tap. Nine of the last 14 IRL events at Texas Motor Speedway have been decided by less than a second.
The other expected element of drama: Will a Chevy-powered car earn its first win of the 2004 season or will the bow-tie go 0-for-04? Honda engines have powered every victory this season except for the opening race, won by Sam Hornish Jr. in a Toyota-powered Penske car.
Be sure to watch Sunday's race (ABC, 12:30- 3 p.m. ET) and then log onto ESPN.com to chat with the winner afterward. The winning driver will be on hand to take your questions about 20 minutes after the race, so get your questions in early.

Helio is here, let's get started!
Ryan and Preston (Olympia, WA)
Helio, Nice job man! Hey, was that last restart all about Toyota power, Helio magic, or a combination of both?Ryan and PrestonOlympia, WA
Helio (3:50 PM)
It was a learning process from fontana, we had three top gears and every restart the car slowed down a lot. This time we didn't take the chance and it was the right way.
Tom (London)
Hi Helio. What a fantastic win after such a difficult season. Do you think things will change next season and you will be able to mount a championship challenge.
Helio (3:51 PM)
That's the goal that we're looking for. This is great momentum to take into next season, we improved the cars and Toyota is working hard to keep up with Honda. Hopefully we can carry it into next year and win that championship.
Marina Lima (São Paulo, Brazil)
Hello my dear boss! So, you did it! Wonderful!!And now, when are you coming to Brazil to celebrate with us?Best and congratulations, Marina
Helio (3:52 PM)
Thanks Marina, we did it! The last race, better late than never. I will definitely go to Brazil and we can start making it better for next year.
Shelby Indiana
You are my favorite racecar driver. Do you have a girlfriend? I am so glad that you won! :)
Helio (3:52 PM)
Thank you very much Shelby, I appreciate that. Right now yes I do have a girlfriend! Hopefully we'll be good next year in the championship.
Ryan (Olympia, WA)
Helio, Has Toyota matched Honda?Nice Job!Ryan
Helio (3:53 PM)
I do think Honda is still a little bit better, but we picked up a bunch. We still need to keep working to make sure next year is more even.
Jon, San Francisco
You've been on a pole roll lately Helio, but this time you turned the pole into a race win. What was the difference? Did you know going in you had a car that could win it?
Helio (3:54 PM)
Yes, I did have a great car but at the same time I knew I had to run it as hard as I could. The competition was very tough. I was patient and tried to be smart in the end and make it happen.
Jo ... Littleton, CO
Great job Helio!!! What will you do now that the season is over? I'll go on vacation with you! Take care, Jo
Helio (3:55 PM)
Well, obviously we'll do some tests and some appearances. Unfortunately it's not a vacation, going to work nonstop for next season.
Toni, NYC
It's been awhile since you've climbed a fence -- Helio, do you ever worry you'll fall from the fence man? Glad to see you up there again, hope you get to be a spider more next year.
Helio (3:56 PM)
thank you, it's better late than never. I wasn't worried.I knew with my team what we are capable of, that's why I was climbing the fence, just like the Spidey movie. He was in the web but came back strong like me!
Curt, Milwaukie, Ore.
What's it mean for Team Penske to win the first and last race? Does it give you all something to build on for next year?
Helio (3:58 PM)
Absolutely, it gives us great courage for next year and we're going to do it better next year. This year we went through tough times but we got tighter as a team because of it.Thanks everybody, we've got more work ahead of us and must be going.
(3:59 PM)
That's all for now everybody, thanks for checking in with us post-race this season to chat with the IndyCar winners.Stay tuned for a chat this coming Wednesday, Oct. 20, with IRL season champ Tony Kanaan from the ESPNZone in New York City.
