Welcome to The Show! Khalif Barnes will be here at 3 ET today. Send in those questions now!
The ShowGirl (3:06 PM)
Hey folks, we're ready to rolll, Khalif should be here any minute. Keep sending in those Qs, we'll get rolling shortly.
Khalif Barnes (3:09 PM)
What's going on guys, I'm here and ready for your questions, ready to get this thing rollin'!
Khalif, you'd look great in a Pats uniform. What do you think about going to the Pats to protect Tom Brady? I'm sure you'd like all the rings you'd get!
Khalif Barnes (3:12 PM)
I think Tom is coming up to be one of the greatest QBs in the league -- if not the best, right now. His presence and talet -- it would be an honor to block for him. With three Super Bowls, MVPs, an amazing work ethic, and just his struggle to get that starting spot -- what an honor it would be for me to block for a guy of that caliber!
Steve Las Vegas NV
Great job at the combine and senior bowl. The bears have had great success drafting players from U of W.Olin Kruetz,Tank Johnson,Tony Parrish.Do you think you could be added to the list.
Khalif Barnes (3:13 PM)
Thanks Steve. Yes, I would love to be added to that list, those are some great guys coming from Washington and heading to the Bears. Again, it would be an honor. I'd love to have a professional career like those guys. I look forward to taking on that challenge.
Sean, Overland Park, KS
Do you enjoy run-blocking or pass-blocking more? Which do you think you're better at?
Khalif Barnes (3:16 PM)
WHen I first started off, I really enjoyed pass blocking when I first came in. Coming from basketball it reminded me of really playing defense, blocking and setting screens. But, as I grew up and developed I think I have grown to love run-blocking and now I think they are equal in my mind.
Brian (Englewood, NJ)
Mel Kiper has you just outside the 1st round, where do you think you'll wind up going in the draft? Do you think you should be a 1st rounder?
Khalif Barnes (3:17 PM)
Yes, I think I should be a first rounder. I think there are a lot of good players in the draft, there are probably about 8 or 9 teams that could use a good tackle ... depending on how fast the smaller skill position guys get taken, I see myself going some where in the mid-first round, maybe 15, 16 or 17. Earlier would be great, then again, mid-1st round would be great too. Anywhere in that first round!
malcolm newark nj
right tackle or left tackle in nfl?
Khalif Barnes (3:18 PM)
I prefer the left tackle just because I feel more comfortable kicking out of that side. It's more natural to me ... plus, they make more money.
Benjamin Brown ( Pittsgrove, N.J )
If a nfl team ask you to play guard how much of an adjustment would it take? Are you confident enough to where you could make the swith without losing a beat.
Khalif Barnes (3:20 PM)
I would do anything to better the team and fit into a scheme -- that's why I switched from defense in college in the first place. I'm sure there would be a lot to learn and adjustments to make moving to a guard position. If a team wanted me to try it, I would certainly try it. I think with my height I'm better suited as a tackle, but I'd try anything if a coach asked me to.
Hey Khalif, first I just wanna say nice try this year in the AppleCup (I'm a Coug) But anyways what's the best part been of doing the Draft Combine? And i really do wish ya luck for the draft even though you're a husky! Thanks Man
Khalif Barnes (3:22 PM)
Thanks RC. I appreciate that -- even though you're a Coug. The best part of the combine is just meeting all the guys you've seen on TV. They going from being just another college player that you watch and admire on ESPN and then at the combine you get to develop a relationship with them. The best thing about that combine is meeting those guys, getting to know more about them than just, "he's a good football player." They were great guys, I loved getting to know them at the combine.
Bill (Portland, or)
How do you look in Brown and Orange? There are an awful lot of us Browns fans praying you last until #34! Good luck in the draft...
Khalif Barnes (3:23 PM)
I think I'd look good in Brown and Orange! Like I said, anywhere in the first round is good enough for me! I appreciate the support.
Jake (Issaquah, WA)
Admit it, Khalif: money aside, would it be worth to play one more season, just to shut up Coug fans?
Khalif Barnes (3:25 PM)
You know what, it would be worth it to go back to UW and play for Ty Willingham and win another Apple Cup, but, we've won the last five of six. I'm happy with that. I loved my experience at the University of Washington. Seattle was great. I'm sure I will always get back to visit that place.
Matt (LA via Seattle)
Khalif, way to bring mad respect to UW players. I wanted a players opinion on this...why no love for linebackers by the NFL? I hope you agree, I think you would be a great fit on my Seahawks, but you wont be on the board when they pick..but they need LBs and never want to take them! Why no love for LBs and Safeties?
Khalif Barnes (3:27 PM)
You know, I do agree with that. Although, I think Derrick Johnson from Texas will get plenty of respect and go in the top 5. My favorite player was always LB Junior Seau so I have respect for linebackers, that's for sure. They are very talented and they don't get enough respect -- I feel you on that, Matt!
Khalif, congrats on your performance at the combine. Aside from the massive NFL playbooks, what do you think is the most mentally challenging part of preparing to play?
Khalif Barnes (3:29 PM)
Adjusting to speed like Dwight Freeny and Strahan and the likes. All and all, football is football, big guys playing football. It's like riding a bike, you have to adjust to the speed of the game and the strength of the guys, but really, if you have a knack for it and it's something you've been doing for so long, I don't the preparation will be too much different.
Tony (Danbury, CT)
Whats the first thing you buy with the signing bonus???
Khalif Barnes (3:30 PM)
I'm going to get some good medicine for my brother because he is a diabetic. He was diagnosed when he was 10 or 11, he's 21 now and I think getting him proper medical treatment will be right at the top of my list. That's the first thing I'll get.
now dont give me a "any team" answer, but which team do u most want to be drafted by?
Khalif Barnes (3:31 PM)
OK, well, I grew up a fan of the Raiders and the DOlphins. The Phins have the No. 2 pick ... and they willprobably take a RB, not me. I think the Raiders are all set with their tackles. I'd love to go to one of those teams, but I don't think I'll have that chance. I'll have to just watch films of them from somewhere else.
Khalif, What makes you the best Olineman in the draft and If the Dolphins were to trade down, how would you like playing here?
Khalif Barnes (3:34 PM)
I'll be the best tackle in the draft b/c for my size, I have pretty good quickness. I'll be able to block Freeny and Taylor and as a rookie, I know i'll take my lumps, but I think my character can override that. I'm headstrong about my whole rookie season and my strength is a plus. I know the other two tackles in this draft are so very talented and I have so much respect for those guys, as well.
Khalif Barnes (3:34 PM)
If the Dolphins traded down and picked me, I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to play in Miami. I've only been to that city twice in my life, but I thought it was great. I'd love to play there!
What nfl teams are showing the most interest Khalif Barnes?
Khalif Barnes (3:35 PM)
So far, St. Louis, the Chargers, the Panthers, the Titans, Cleveland and Kansas City have all shown some interest. I have no idea how it will all go down on draft day, but those are just a few teams who have show interest.
Coach Williams El Cajon, CA
Congrats, Khalif on all the had work you have put in the classroom and on the field! I knew when I coached you at Mt. Miguel your Junior year on the basketball team that you were going to make something out of your life!
Khalif Barnes (3:37 PM)
Hey, what's up coach! HOw you doing! Thanks so much for the support. I hope all is well! I appreciate the coaching you gave me when I was a junior.
Ok Khalif... PICTURE THIS... the night before your 1st NFL game. You're set to start @ LT. But you can't sleep because your about to play... who? Who scares you alittle?
Khalif Barnes (3:38 PM)
Hmm... I wouldn't say SCARES me, but who I respect the most and would be most catious to face is Dwight Freeney. That spin move of his is unbelievable. His overall talent and ability, he just beats guys left and right.
Hey Kalif! The Eagles just lost a starting tackle to the saints (jermane mayberry) how would you like to play for the eagles this year?
Khalif Barnes (3:39 PM)
Donovan McNabb and T.O. -- I would love to play for the Eagles! If they are healthy, the possibilites are endless!
Obviously the biggest battles are won in the trenches. As an o-tackle, what do you find more difficult to protect, the bigger, gap-filling ends, or faster, more explosive pass rushers? If you could go one on one with a d-lineman in this draft, who would you like to go up against?
Khalif Barnes (3:42 PM)
First of all, I think the smaller, quicker guys are the toughest, they get off the edges so fast. Speed kills. I can match size, but quickness is tougher to keep up with. ... I went up against Matt Roth the D-end from Iowa, in Senior Bowl, he was very good. I have never had the chance to go up against Marcus Spears, but I would love to.
Hey Kalif, what player in the NFL now do you feel you most resemble?
Khalif Barnes (3:44 PM)
That's a tough one. It's hard for me to say, but a lot of guys have told me that I remind them of Chris Samuels from the Redskins.
Khalif, America's Team is in need of an OT, do you think you have the meanness that tends to be associated with the best OT's of all time or do you believe nice is ok too?
Khalif Barnes (3:46 PM)
Yes, I believe that once I put a helmet on, that's what I do for a living, that's what I love to do, it's kind of like a war once you're out there. You have to play this game with a mean-streak otherwise those guys will devour you. Football isn't meant for nice guys BUT, there is a switch. You have to turn that switch on and off depending on whether you're on or off the field. I believe you have to be a nice guy off the field, that's OK, but then you have to flip that switch and become a giant when you head into warlike competition. It's a mean battle on the field.
antoine " tweezie" spring valley
whats up leaf? glad to see you holding it down for mt. miguel. keep up the good work.
Khalif Barnes (3:47 PM)
What's up 'toine, Tweezieman! Appreciate it dog! I'll holler at you and Rich and Walt and all those guys when I get back there in April!
Jon (Mobile, AL)
Bah. You know you want to play down South, right? *cough*Atlantafalcons*cough*
Khalif Barnes (3:54 PM)
Oh yeah, that would be probably the most fun place to play blocking for Michael. That could get me in trouble, I'd probably be having so much watching what Mike's doing that I wouldn't be paying attention to my guy. Atlanta would be great. Michael Vick is the most exciting player in the NFL. Because he can run so well, defenders dont want to run past him, they are trying to contain him so he slows down the pass rush for you. Michael hasn't even reached his peak yet, and when he does, I think he will be the best in the league. I would love to come in and play with him, especially at this age.
What player would you love to meet more than anyone else?
Khalif Barnes (3:55 PM)
It would be tight to meet Mike Vick. Either him or T.O. or Randy Moss. I like those three guys right there, I think off the field they would be great to chill out with.
Khalif Barnes (3:56 PM)
Thanks for all of your questions and support today. Hopefully I'll get drafted to one of your cities and I'll be hearing from you again soon. Thanks so much everybody! Take care!
