Chat with NFL draft prospect Troy Williamson!
![]() |
A standout performer, even a position stocked with talent, Williamson is a lock for the first round. In fact, ESPN.com draft guru Mel Kiper projects Williamson going to the Carolina Panthers at pick No. 14. Blessed with tremendous speed and size, Williamson often managed to carry South Carolina's run-first offense on his shoulders. As a junior in 2004, he led the SEC in yards per reception.
Troy won't hit chat until 3 p.m. ET on Monday, but you can send your questions now and join us then!
Buzzmaster (3:00 PM)
Hello again! Speedster Troy Williamson will be here shortly!
Troy Williamson (3:01 PM)
Hello! I'm here and ready for your questions!
Justin (Raleigh NC)
Troy, Kiper has you going to the Panthers a 14. As a panthers fan id love to see you fall that and put on that panthers jersey next season. If so how would you feel about playing for the panthers and becoming one of the best deep threat tandems alongside steve smith? Go Panthers!
Troy Williamson (3:02 PM)
For one, that would be a good thing for me. I would be close to him. They are in need for a receiver, so that would be a good situation for me.
Mario(Atlanta,Ga)
Troy, you were truely the heart and soul of the gamecocks receivers last season in a run-first offense. So why did you choose to leave early knowing that Steve Spurrier was bringing his pass happy offense to Columbia?
Troy Williamson (3:03 PM)
Even though Coach Spurrier is good with offenses, I had to look at my own situation and what the QB situation would be like.
Tim --- Minneapolis, MN
I love the vertical threat that you posess. My question is : When you played for SC did they have many plays designed to go over the middle? And when you advance to the NFL, what would you like to most improve on as a wide receiver?
Troy Williamson (3:04 PM)
They had some plays for me to go across the middle. I have no problem going over the middle. Around my junior year they started moving me around a lot.
Oip, Walnut Creek, CA
Hey Troy, what organization has really impressed you so far in your interviews? And how many personal visits have you made?
Troy Williamson (3:04 PM)
Everybody showed real class in the whole process. But everybody is pretty much saying the same thing right now.
Glyn Freeman: ( Gulfport, MS)
Is your speed a God-given talent or was it something you had to work tremendously to obtain?
Troy Williamson (3:05 PM)
You can tell from looking at me it's just a God given talent. You can't really work at speed.
Shawn (KC)
Troy, you were a great WR at the college level. Would you like to play in Minnesota and do you feel you can give Randy Moss type production in the NFL.
Troy Williamson (3:05 PM)
Eventually, yes. There aren't too many teams I wouldn't play for! Who wouldn't want Daunte Culpepper throwing them the ball?!
David , California
Have the Chargers talked with you at all? I hope we get you ! How would you feel a Charger?
Troy Williamson (3:06 PM)
Yes. I visited the Chargers. It went really well. I love the coach. I have family around San Diego as well.
Tom (Chicago)
How do you stack up with Braylon Edwards and Mike Williams?
Troy Williamson (3:06 PM)
I feel like I"m one of the best receivers in this draft. Whatever teams need, that's what they will get in me.
Tim --- Minneapolis, MN
Are you going to be in NY or at home with your family for the draft?
Troy Williamson (3:07 PM)
I'll be Augusta, about 10 minutes from Macon. My mom has something planned.
Brendan (Boston)
Troy, how exciting is it to be going through all of this draft stuff, especially with the chance of breaking the top ten?
Troy Williamson (3:08 PM)
It's good and bad. Visiting so many teams is tough and trying to find time to work out. But it's fun.
Kyle Levy (Palm Harbor, FL)
Growing up, who was youre favorite team?
Troy Williamson (3:08 PM)
Indianapolis Colts! I just always looked up to them and liked their players.
Devin (Charleston, SC)
Who would you compare your style of game to? Did you try to imitate any receivers growing up?
Troy Williamson (3:09 PM)
Chad Johnson!
Mike (Montgomery, AL)
Do you think you can take Dunta Robinson in a man to man defense? :)
Troy Williamson (3:09 PM)
I think I can!
Mark (Boston)
Do you think it will be hard to adapt to the NFL?
Troy Williamson (3:10 PM)
Just learning the new system and new plays.
Tom (Chicago)
Do you have the same mouth as Chad Johnson?
Troy Williamson (3:10 PM)
No!
Willie (Pittsburgh)
Len P wrote an articel stating that big numbers shouldn't be expected from rookie WRs. Do you agree with his assessment?
Troy Williamson (3:11 PM)
Anybody can have an opinion, but when it's gametime it's gametime! I was talking to Braylon about this same thing yesterday. But don't worry, we'll have something for Len when the season is said and done.
bob (nyc)
What have you been told from scouts is perceived as your biggest weakness? How have you tried to improve on it?
Troy Williamson (3:11 PM)
Right now just route running. That is something I'm always working on anyway.
David , California
How would feel about also being the kick/punt returner?
Troy Williamson (3:12 PM)
I don't mind. I did it in college. The more you can do, the longer you will be around.
Nick (Columbia)
How was it playing for Lou Holtz?
Troy Williamson (3:12 PM)
It was a good experience for me. I learned so much from him.
Kyle Levy (Palm Harbor, FL)
What player would you most like to make a huge play on? Thanks
Troy Williamson (3:12 PM)
Anybody that is up for a challenge!
adam (columbia sc)
Troy, during your second season and the spring game before ur last, your ability come down with a jump ball seemed in question. do u think ur junior season proved to people u are a complete reciever? or are people just in love with your speed
Troy Williamson (3:14 PM)
You can look at the film and see what kind of receiver I am. I worked on my hand-eye coordination to adjust to different kinds of balls. But I proved I'm a complete receiver.
Scott (Eagan, MN)
Will you be surprised if you aren't a top 15 selection?
Troy Williamson (3:14 PM)
My goal is to go in the Top 15 and I will be disappointed if I don't.
David , California
What music do you listen to when you get pumped before a game?
Troy Williamson (3:15 PM)
All different types of music. Everything.
Rory (Montpelier, VT)
Troy, what is your favorite memory from your time as a Gamecock?
Troy Williamson (3:15 PM)
My sophomore year against Virginia .. the 99-yard slant!
Kyle Levy (Palm Harbor, FL)
Even country?
Troy Williamson (3:15 PM)
Ahh, it really depends! Not before a game, no.
Nick (Irmo, SC)
What is the fastest 40 time you have ever ran?
Troy Williamson (3:16 PM)
4.32 is the fastest I've been clocked.
Chris(Aiken, SC)
Do you like Clemson?
Troy Williamson (3:17 PM)
Just another team ...
Tim --- Minneapolis, MN
Troy, Do you think you are more dangerous over the middle or in the slant or more of straight verical deep threat?
Troy Williamson (3:17 PM)
However you want it .. whichever.
Tom (Chicago)
Chad Johnson can really block, is that something you need work on?
Troy Williamson (3:18 PM)
I don't mind blocking at all. I'd say I'm a 9 in blocking.
Kevin (SC)
What will you miss the most about college ball?
Troy Williamson (3:18 PM)
I know I will miss the comroderie from all the people I met.
David , California
Your first NFL touchdown ! What are you gonna do ?
Troy Williamson (3:18 PM)
Not sure.. whatever comes I guess!
Pedro (Columbia, SC)
Troy, what advice would you give to a college player looking to prepare for the NFL workouts?
Troy Williamson (3:19 PM)
Just take it as serious as possible. Somebody else is working just as hard, if not harder.
Mushin - chicago
Well hello troy, have the bears talked to at all? Do you have a work out scheduled with the bears?
Troy Williamson (3:20 PM)
I visited them.
Felipe (Atlanta)
You see lots of WR's who are very confident, even downright cocky, like TO or Freddie Mitchell. How much do you think confidence affects a WR's performance?
Troy Williamson (3:21 PM)
Confidence has a lot to do with it. It has a lot to do with mine. That's what made me a different player from my soph. year to junior year.
Dallas (Spartanburg(SC))
Have you talked to Dunta or any other former Gamecocks about being a rookie in the NFL?
Troy Williamson (3:21 PM)
I talked to Dunta and some other guys. They just told me to be ready to work. It's a job now. Just like I said, there is always somebody else trying to keep their job.
larry (wilmington de)
you have risen up draft boards sense the end of the season, this is mostly because of off-field stuff do you feel being drafted so high not based on on-field performance will put undue pressure on you?
Troy Williamson (3:22 PM)
Everybody saw what I could do at the combine and teams starting looking at me differently.
TJ ((Cincinnati,OH))
Troy, seen USC won the NIT this year...what about you? can you ball on the hardwood?
Troy Williamson (3:23 PM)
Not really. You better keep me on the football field! I went to high school with Brandon Wallace. I'll let him do all that.
bob (nyc)
What other schools recruited you heavily while you were in high school?
Troy Williamson (3:23 PM)
Georgia, FSU, Tennessee, Clemson ..
Arthur (Brazil)
Troy, do you think you'll be a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft?
Troy Williamson (3:23 PM)
I'm pretty sure I could be a top 10 pick.
Tim (cincinnati)
Troy have the Bengals talked to you at all??
Troy Williamson (3:24 PM)
I haven't talked to them.
Justin miller , clemson
hey troy buddy, how do you feel you will match up against me in the nfl? Will I shut you down like I did in college or will you get lucky and make me taost?
Troy Williamson (3:25 PM)
Justin never shut me down! Get it straight. If we had a QB who would have given me the ball, it wouldn't have been a problem.
Matt (Minneaplois, MN)
Troy- Is there a particular quarterback or offense in the NFL that you think would fully showcase your talent?
Troy Williamson (3:25 PM)
Probably West Coast.
Red McCombs (San Antonio, TX)
Are you better as a flanker or slot receiver?
Troy Williamson (3:26 PM)
Probably flanker.
Doug (St. Paul, MN)
How are your skills in the redzone?
Troy Williamson (3:26 PM)
Good. Great.
daniel (columbia,sc)
Troy you are one of the few success stories to come from USC football recently, will you come visit USC football games next year?
Troy Williamson (3:27 PM)
I have no clue! I don't know where I'll be living!
John (Cincinnati)
Troy, what number would you like to sport on your back next year and why?
Troy Williamson (3:28 PM)
Anything in the 80s! Thanks for the questions! Look around come Draft day! Before I leave, I want to thank my trainer Pete Bommarito from Perfect Competition in Ft. Lauderdale. Take care everyone!
