Chat with George Gervin
![]() |
Gervin's career speaks for itself. His 26.2 ppg average ranks eighth in NBA history and only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan won more scoring titles than Gervin's four, and he was the first guard in league history to win three in a row. And just like the commercial said, if there was one thing he could do, it was finger-roll.
Gervin won't be here until 4 pm ET on Thursday, but send those questions now and we'll save them for his arrival.

Helloooooooo! The Iceman! George Gervin will be here shortly! Get your questions ready!
Paul Bale Vancouver, BC
When did you develop the finger-roll? and why?
George Gervin (4:04 PM)
I got tired of dunking. I got tired of hitting my wrist and the finger roll was smoother and looked better and it was easy for me to do with my long arms. But I took it from Wilt, Connie Hawkins and Dr. J and added it to my game.
SAN ANTONIO, TX
Hello ICE! I loved watching you play...no one better! I would like to know, who was the toughest matchup for you? Thanks
George Gervin (4:05 PM)
I'd say Dennis Johnson. I really had to be prepared and focused because he didn't go for fakes and moved his feet well.
Steven (NYC)
Iceman, Loved your game. I always like to ask this question to great basketball players from years past. Who are your top 6 players of all time excluding yourself...
George Gervin (4:06 PM)
At center Kareem, at F Moses Malone, Dr. J at the 3, Magic at the point and myself at the 2. I know that's not six, but that's my starting five.
Chris(Austin Tx)
Ice- What are your fealings on Manu Ginobili's game? Does he give the finger roll justice?
George Gervin (4:07 PM)
I gotta give it to him, man. He goes to the rim and is able to really roll the ball off his fingers. He's bona fide with the roll.
Joe (Billings, MT)
George, which game style do you prefer watching-70s & 80s offense or 90s & 00s defense?
George Gervin (4:09 PM)
I like the way we played back in the day. It's more fun for the fans when teams score a lot. But I never won a championship because our defense wasn't great and I'd have liked to have some of that on my side back in the day.
Ivo (Estonia)
Hi Mr.Gervin. In your opinion, who is the most valuable player to his team in the NBA. And, who will the title this year?
George Gervin (4:10 PM)
Shaq is the most valuable to Miami and Duncan is to San Antonio and they're on a similar level. Take them away and those teams are not as good.
Paul (San Diego)
THE ICEMAN COMETH to sportsnation...welcome. Any picks for the remainder of the playoffs?
George Gervin (4:11 PM)
I think the West is a little easier for me to pick with San Antonio out there. Detroit and Miami are both great in the East, but you have to give the defending champs a little edge becuase they've already done it.
Travis (San Diego)
Mr. Iceman, what player in 2005 most resembles your style of play?
George Gervin (4:12 PM)
I'll go with Tracy McGrady. He's big and can put the ball on the floor. He can use both hands and score on anyone, and he is fundamentally sound. All that gives him the ablity to score at will.
Greg (VA)
Iceman, who gave you that nickname and why?
George Gervin (4:13 PM)
Roland "Fatty" Taylor gave me that name in the ABA in Virginia, and he called me Iceman because I could drop 25 and not break a sweat.
Jim (NYC)
I was a big ABA fan groiwng up, watching the Nets in the old Island Garden. What are some of your favorite recollections of the ABA? And do you think it gets the respect it deserves as a pro league?
George Gervin (4:15 PM)
I used to like Long Island and they havd a good team out there. Marvin Barnes, Freddie Lewis, Fry Williams were all ballplayers. Playing in Utah with Jimmy Johnson and Ron Boone is memorable. Those guys are legends in the ABA and they don't get the recognition they deserve. They could have played in any league, including the NBA.
Travis (San Diego)
Who did you most enjoy having as a teammate? Why?
George Gervin (4:17 PM)
Atris Gilmore, Larry Keenan, Mike Mitchell, Johnny Moore, James Silas, Mark Olberdeen. I think about those guys because a lot of them are still here in San Antonio and we still have some ABA reunions, so they come to mind first for me.
Tony (Chicago)
Iceman, what do you think of all these preps to pros? DO you think the NBA needs a REAL minor league system?
George Gervin (4:19 PM)
I think the NBA could use a good minor league system to help them mature, but I don't see anything wrong with them going from preps to pros. A lot of them have NBA games. They may not be "mature" enough to be in the NBA. LeBron is one in a lifetime, but a lot of kids who are just a step away from solid NBA careers may need that NBDL kind of experience to get them ready for all they go through in the NBA.
RReebs (LA)
Iceman, who's afro was the best: Ben Wallace or your ex-teammate James Silas?
George Gervin (4:22 PM)
Ben Wallace may have a little better grade of hair than Silas since James used to use the hot iron to get his 'fro out there and that was bad for it.
George Gervin (4:23 PM)
I gotta run, but thanks for hanging with me and enjoy the playoffs.
