Welcome folks, lets get to the questions!
Aaron Palm Beach Fl
With the talent on the Gators this year is there any reason why they cant make a run at the national championship?? Urban has won that team over. Next to USC I dont see a more talented team.
Moderator (4:07 PM)
Hey everyone .. Tom had to take a phone call but will be here momentarily!
Tom Luginbill (4:09 PM)
Sorry guys, been playing phone tag with a high school coach and had to get the info.
Tom Luginbill (4:11 PM)
OK, I believe coach Meyer stepped into an outstanding situation at Florida and there is no reason why he shouldn't be successful immediately. If QB Chris Leak can stay healthy and pick up the nuances of the spread offense, in particluar the running game aspects, then I look for the Gators to compete for the SEC title and get back to national prominance.
Joe (Birmingham, Al.)
In your opinion, which teams are doing well in recruiting thus far?
Tom Luginbill (4:13 PM)
Notre Dame and Texas are making impacts early on, but it is way too soon to start assessing the classes thus far. Remember, verbal commitments are just verbal, not written.
Bruce (Philadelphia, PA)
With David Cutliffe leaving ND due to health concerns, do you see Notre Dame losing momentum in recruiting? Also, what do you think of Peter Vaas as his replacement? Thanks!
Tom Luginbill (4:15 PM)
No, not at all because he made the decision early enough that it will not hurt. Peter Vaas is an excellent offensive coach and the Irish will just keep chuggin' along.
Don: (Lincoln/NE)
The Huskers just received committments from Josh Freeman and Menelik Holt, do you see the Huskers having much of a chance with Chris Bell or David Ausberry.
Tom Luginbill (4:19 PM)
I believe with the new offensive philosophy in Lincoln that Nebraska will have a shot at many skill position players that they could not get before. Josh Freeman -- whether he plays QB, TE or even on defense -- is an outstanding prospect and when it is all said and done, Ausberry may be one of the finest receivers in the country. And if they can land some playmakers at wide receiver and a bonafide tight end, then the Huskers will be well on their way.
Charlie, Oklahoma
It could be my crimson colored glasses, but it seems people are underestimating the talent OU has. Bob Stoops has done great with less talent, what do you think about the Sooners this year, and who do you think wins the QB spot?
Tom Luginbill (4:23 PM)
Whoever is saying that the Sooners are competing with lesser talent may be misinformed. You don't compete for the national championship year in and year out with lesser talent. Coach Stoops and his staff have done an outstanding job and brought the program back as a national power. I believe that Bomar will be the guy to open the season.
Joey (Tifton, GA)
Now that you have chimmed in on the OU quarterback situation, who do you think will come out on top of Florida State's QB competition?
Tom Luginbill (4:28 PM)
Sexton to start it off, but he better produce.
Vero (Mansfield)
Do you follow any summer camps and the results/offers that come out of them? That is when recruiting buzz really heats up, correct?
Tom Luginbill (4:32 PM)
We do not place much stock in camps and combines. Lots of players look great running around in shirts and shorts, but that is not how the game is played. Studying film of the prospects ability to play the game is the best way to truly evaluate a players skill level. I know that a lot of rumors and speculation start flying around because a certain player will run a fast 40 time or quick shuttle time, but the players ability to play the game and academic prowess is what really catches the eyes of recruiters, not combine results.
Mark, Hampton VA
What do you think of Brandon Caleb? He looks really good to me
Tom Luginbill (4:33 PM)
Exceptional athlete with the ability to play a lot of positions at the next level, that is what makes him so attractive. The more you can do...
Eric, California
are you related to Al of SDSU fame?
Tom Luginbill (4:35 PM)
Yep, I sure am. He is my father.
Jonathan (Asheville)
Do you Hate Tennessee?
Tom Luginbill (4:36 PM)
Not in the least bit. I don't have any vested interest in hating or loving any particluar program.
JQ (Lansing, MI)
I've heard rumors that Myron Rolle is leaning heavily toward Michigan. Can you confirm or deny this?
Tom Luginbill (4:42 PM)
I cannot confirm or deny this rumor, but I did talk to his high school coach last week and as good of a player as this guy is, academically he is just as strong and wants to be a doctor in the future. You never know how that may affect his decision as well. Time will tell...
Dee, Houston
With the heated QB situation at LSU which of the three will start for LSU, and do you think that Ryan Perrilloux will get a true shot at getting playing time or even starting some games this season?
Tom Luginbill (4:45 PM)
I believe Perriloux will compete right away. The QB position was a major inconsitency for the Tigers in 2004 and if anything, Perriloux will shake things up and provide more competition for everyone involved. When it's all said and done, look for Perriloux to be the guy.
Brendan (Boston)
For once, touch on BC's recruiting. Will the move to the ACC help or hurt recruiting? Please.
Tom Luginbill (4:50 PM)
I believe it will certainly help from an exposure standpoint and strength of schedule. This is a great move for the BC program and with the job that the BC staff has done the past few years, this should only elevate their program that much more. The schedule gets tougher obviously, but they will benefit in the long run. BC has been very quiet thus far and I believe wants to see many prospects throughout their senior season before making too many decisions.
Badre (Canton)
Big Buckeye fan here, Would you compare Chris Wells high school film to Adrian Peterson's a few years a go? If not what style would you compare him to?
Tom Luginbill (4:53 PM)
Very similar to Peterson, but I don't believe Wells possesses quite the same burst. Wells is a bruiser with excellent feet and overall quickness for his size. He is a between the tackles, downhill type runner that fits perfectly into the Buckeyes' offensive scheme. I look forward to watching film of him throughout his senior season as well.
SD(Austin, TX)
Texas has 18 verbal commits thus far, would you attribute this success to the lack of large recruiting hauls the last two years leaving open spots, or Rose bowl success. It definitely look as if Texas is headed for the top class this year though.
Tom Luginbill (5:01 PM)
The 18 verbal commitments are a direct result of Mack Brown and his staff really pounding the pavement and building off of an outstanding 2004. They handled a fine Michigan team in the Rose Bowl and every recruit in the country saw it. I think that they have received verbal commitments from some great receivers because there is a need there now and the same with the linebacker position with the departure of Derrick Johnson. There's no doubt Texas is heading in the right direction, and if they can keep some of the best kids in Texas from leaving the state, then they will end up with quite a class.
Tom Luginbill (5:03 PM)
Gotta run fans. There will be much more to come in the coming weeks and months as we continue researching and evaluating. Talk to you next week at the same time.
