Chat during MLB Home Run Derby!

While reigning Derby champion Vladimir Guerrero won't be defending his crown, the competition will still be filled with plenty of power. Philadelphia Phillies' Chase Utley, who is second in all of baseball with 25 home runs, will participate in the Derby at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The top two home run hitters in the American League, Cleveland Indians' Grady Sizemore (22 HRs) and Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers (21) will also be on hand Monday night.
Milwaukee's Ryan Braun, Dan Uggla of the Florida Marlins, Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays, Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins and Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros are also going to be swinging for the fences at Yankee Stadium. Berkman is the only one of the group to have participated in the Derby before. This is his fifth appearance.
So, join all the other MLB fans as you watch the Derby Monday night, starting at 8 p.m. ET. Send your questions or comments now!

Buzzmaster (8:01 PM)
Welcome to the Home Run Derby! 3 Doors Down? Huh? Where's Josh Hamilton! Let's get this thing started! Amy Nelson is joining us live from Yankee Stadium!
Amy Nelson (8:01 PM)
hellooo everyone from Yankee Stadium ... let's get this chat started,
David-New Orleans
Josh Hamilton all the way!
Amy Nelson (8:02 PM)
i'm here watching the band 3 doors down play ... for some reason baseball feels the need to promote a band each year with this event. before ESPN telecast went live they played a song for the crowd...i'd say definitely more booing than cheering after they finished. we'll see what happens after this one ... i'm in right field and the bleacher bums are not feeling the music.
Amy Nelson (8:02 PM)
here's your derby lineup, just in case anyone forgot or didn't see it ...
Amy Nelson (8:02 PM)
1. Lance Berkman, Astros 2. Ryan Braun, Brewers 3. Josh Hamilton, Rangers 4. Evan Longoria, Rays 5. Justin Morneau, Twins 6. Grady Sizemore, Indians 7. Dan Uggla, Marlins 8. Chase Utley, Phillies
Nick (SF)
What time do they actually start throwing pitches?
Amy Nelson (8:03 PM)
8:22 an mlb official told me today
cleveland 71
hey how do you think my boy from cleveland is going to do?
Amy Nelson (8:03 PM)
my guess, not so good. just a gut instinct we'll see...
Evan (NY)
is berkman batting righty or lefty? i heard righty but i think he should bat lefty at the stadium.
Amy Nelson (8:03 PM)
i believe hes hitting righty...which seems crazy with this porch here. we'll see if he was right in that decision
Amy Nelson (8:04 PM)
oh man, serious boos. that's hysterical
Jacob (Indiana)
I think that Berkman is going to take this thing, but I like Uggla a lot too so...
phil (chicago)
ur at the game?
Amy Nelson (8:04 PM)
i am here, indeed.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Hamilton or Uggla, who's being overlooked I think.
Amy Nelson (8:05 PM)
funny, in talking to players today, i don't think either is being overlooked. if anything, hamilton seems the favorite.
Matt stein Norwalk, Ohio
I would love to see Grady win it. No one from Cleveland has one. Belle came close but it would be ncie to someone who isnt known as a power hitter to win it.
Ryan(madison,wi)
On tv it sounded like cheers......
Amy Nelson (8:06 PM)
definitely wasn't...
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
I was only referring to Uggla...
John Aiea, Hawaii
Come on Chase, Represent!
Nate (Lima, Ohio)
Without Junior, A-Rod, Giambi, Howard, Pujols, or even Adam Dunn... this Derby is a farce. There are no real power hitters besides Hamilton.
Amy Nelson (8:06 PM)
i think that's a fair point ... ARod should be in this.
John Maryland
The All star game is better to watch than the Home run derby. All the stars of baseball are playing at the same time. The home run derby has some stars but theres no A-Rod or Manny. And it gets boring seeing home run after home run in the derby. So Skip how do you watch that?
Amy Nelson (8:07 PM)
skip's off tonight guys ... but i think the length of this thing makes it hard to watch. and i must say, it's much more intersting to at least be here.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Do you think we're going to get any discussion on how all the performers are all white (though I think Grady is biracial) like we did when the percentage of African American players dropped to its lowest level in like 50 years?
Amy Nelson (8:08 PM)
josh, grady is biracial but i think it's intersting that there isn't one hispanic player. i know the padres adrian gonzalez would have loved to be in this, but MLB didn't ask him.
jake (st.louis M.O)
josh hamiltian will win hr derby
Amy Nelson (8:08 PM)
josh hamilton just got a nice reception here.
RICKY MARTIN RALEIGH NC
You want a storie!!!!! look into who throwing for Josh tonight in the home run derby..
Amy Nelson (8:09 PM)
great story ...71 year-old man who used to throw to josh when he was 10 years old. hamilton said when he asked him a few weeks ago, he told hamilton to bring a shovel (a nod to his old age)...
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Did Pujols get asked? Worried about his elbow?
Amy Nelson (8:10 PM)
i'm not sure if he was asked, but i do know that he needs to rest that elbow. so i'm sure that was the main reason
kkid (ann arbour MICHIGAN)
seizemores got it
Robert (Boston)
I think Longoria is going to take the Derby this year. The Rays have been great at winning games that don't matter this season.
Amy Nelson (8:10 PM)
whoah, harsh robert. i don't think i'd agree with that. wasn't it boston they just swept at home a few weeks ago?
Laz Rye,New York
Chase Utley is going to win
Amy Nelson (8:11 PM)
why do you think utley will win?
Amy Nelson (8:12 PM)
i know what the best story here would be, and that's hamilton. i think it's funny when all the big leaguers take their kids out onto the field...kind of cool one time this year they can
phil (chicago)
do you think soriano would be in derby if he wasnt injured
Amy Nelson (8:13 PM)
he might, though it's hard to predict what these players might do anymore
Jay (NY)
Amy, why are you questioning someone named Laz?
Amy Nelson (8:13 PM)
you're right, i should never do something like that..
Billy Atlanta, GA
Did Chase Utley say what I think he did when he was introduced?
Amy Nelson (8:13 PM)
i've heard rumblings ...i didn't see it.
Amy Nelson (8:14 PM)
reggie jackson just ontroduced, big ovation.
Amy Nelson (8:14 PM)
he's throwing the first pitch, and derek jeter just caight the pitch. those will be the only yankees you'll see tonight. which is a shame...
Amy Nelson (8:15 PM)
crowd chating "derek jeter"
phil (chicago)
soriano is the best power hitter if he wasnt injured
Jay (NY)
I didn't think it was possible but I hate Arod even more for not being in this. Can we get a Lenny Kravitz chant in his honor?
Chad (Louisville, KY)
Well, after that comment, Utley's definitely not going to win......bad karma.....ugh.
Amy Nelson (8:16 PM)
from what i'm being told, he may have dropped an f-bomb...
Fernando (Houston, TX)
I think Lance is going to do good because he gets so much backspin from the right side. I'm interested on seeing how Longoria is going to do...how much pop do you think he has?
Amy Nelson (8:16 PM)
fair amount, but man, talk about nerves. chipper jones was talking about that today, how nervous he was in his first derby.
Chad (Louisville, KY)
Definitely did.....got it on the DVR.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
I love chanting for .280 hitters with 5 homers.
AK (BOS)
I would love to see Manny in this thing...prettiest right-handed swing in the game. And he can still crush 'em.
Amy Nelson (8:17 PM)
well only five more minutes til this things starts...
phil (chicago)
longoria is a fluke along with his team the rays ....... and why did the rays have to get rid of their former name devil rays?
Amy Nelson (8:19 PM)
hmmm, fluke. that's not what nearly every single talent evalutor says ... they wanted to purge the word devil and start anew.
Mark, (Dover, DE)
Yep, just rewound my DVR. He dropped an F-bomb. Leave it to someone from the city of brotherly love. I personnaly would of been more upset if he didn't say something like that.
Adam (baltimore,md)
don't get ESPN at work.. Keep us updated!!
Amy Nelson (8:19 PM)
we'll be here all night.
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
My picks:1) Sizemore2) Hamilton3) Braun
Andy (Cape Coral,FL.)
What decides the contestests in the home run derby?
Amy Nelson (8:20 PM)
major league baseball
Jay (NY)
Tampa may be playing a little above their heads but Longoria is going to be awesome. That team is only gonna get better, wait until Price comes up.
Tim (texas)
how many homeruns has berkman hit?
Amy Nelson (8:21 PM)
he's got 22 this year so far...
Mike (Philadelphia)
Never ever boo chase utley
Tom (PA)
Yea he dropped the F bomb, which I loved but probably not to classy. But leave it to New Yorkers to show a lack of class by booing someone from the other league as hes introduced his first time ever at Yankee Stadium.
Alex (Milwaukee)
I think Braun is gonna take it...go brewers!!!
Amy Nelson (8:22 PM)
first one braun hits out to left...
Amy Nelson (8:22 PM)
second one, out to right center
Amy Nelson (8:22 PM)
he's got two outsand two homers
Amy Nelson (8:23 PM)
nez balelo, his agent is throwing to him, nez was a former pticher in the phillies systenm in the 80s
Amy Nelson (8:23 PM)
there's anootherinto left field
Amy Nelson (8:24 PM)
my bad ... uggla hitting. i'm so far out i can't see who's up there!
Amy Nelson (8:24 PM)
so anyway ... uggla's got four outs.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Uggla has some real power and to all fields it looks like.
Chad (Louisville, KY)
So what are the odds that someone hits one out? (no.....not just a HR, but OUT of the stadium!? sounds like the players have been talking about it....wouldn't that be a GREAT sendoff for the stadium!?!)
Amy Nelson (8:24 PM)
very low, i would think.
Amy Nelson (8:25 PM)
ok so we've got six outs and four homers.
Amy Nelson (8:27 PM)
sorry we were diconnected for a minute there
Amy Nelson (8:28 PM)
uggla is now out ... he has six homers in the first round.
Jay (NY)
If giambi was in this would he get the Gold Thong Ball?
Amy Nelson (8:29 PM)
ok now we've got grady sizemore coming up
Amy Nelson (8:29 PM)
sizemore just hit one to right center
Amy Nelson (8:30 PM)
wow, bomb up right upper deck it looked like (i can't tell im in right field)
Amy Nelson (8:30 PM)
tow out two homers
Amy Nelson (8:30 PM)
there;s another to right
Amy Nelson (8:31 PM)
ok he's not got 4 outs, 3 hrs
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Two upper deck both around 450ft
Amy Nelson (8:31 PM)
5 outs, 3 hrs
Amy Nelson (8:31 PM)
whoah, that was crushed to right
brandon(columbus,oh)
I would love to see adam dunn in this thing, hed crush the field easily
Amy Nelson (8:32 PM)
that would be great .. sizemore just missed one to right by the foul poul
Amy Nelson (8:32 PM)
another bomb to right upper deck
Amy Nelson (8:32 PM)
six outs, 5 homers
Amy Nelson (8:33 PM)
he just missed another to right, went foul ,..last one to upper deck 448 feet

Amy Nelson (8:33 PM)
and now it's 6 for sizemore
Nathan (PA)
How are you doing this chat from the bleachers? Using a Blackberry?
Amy Nelson (8:34 PM)
lap top my friend, never be able to do it from a lberry
Amy Nelson (8:34 PM)
nine outs six hrs
Chattanooga Tennessee
Josh Hamilton Is gonna walk away with this thing!
Amy Nelson (8:34 PM)
we'll see...
Amy Nelson (8:34 PM)
oh he just missed another one by sizemore ... six hrstied uggla
Andy (Fountain Valley, CA)
I have to say, considering this is the home run derby at Yankee Stadium in its final year, this is one of the least "star" driven derbies I can remember
Amy Nelson (8:35 PM)
yep.
Sean Houston,TX
Amy Nelson, your a brave person bringing a laptop to a baseball game. Dont let it get hit!
Amy Nelson (8:35 PM)
thanks i think we're protected out here in right field
Mark (Dover, DE)
If there are more like Sizemore maybe someone will hit one out of the staduim tonight.
Amy Nelson (8:35 PM)
utley just got booed again
Nathan (PA)
Haha, I've sat in those bleachers before. All I can say is hold onto that laptop pretty tight.
Stephanie(Ft.Worth,TX)
I love Josh Hamilton
Jay (NY)
O/U on bad Eva Longoria jokes coming up? I say 23.
Sean Houston,TX
Hopefully, hows the weather out there?
Amy Nelson (8:39 PM)
weathe ris great, a little hot, theres an amazing sunset right to my left, above the new yankee stadium
Amy Nelson (8:39 PM)
btw, evan longoria is next.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
My fantasy team loves Josh Hamilton too
Amy Nelson (8:40 PM)
jensen lewis, teammate of sizemore's, just texted me. he was super excited to see sizemore hit in the derby, and just texted "he's unreal"
Amy Nelson (8:40 PM)
longoria just got booed.
Amy Nelson (8:40 PM)
one out one homer
Daniel MEXICO
Why Adrian Gonzalez isn`t at the Home run derby??? instead of justin morneau
Amy Nelson (8:41 PM)
GREAT question. bud black, his manager, thought it would have been a perfect fit and adrian today told me he wished he had been asked
Amy Nelson (8:41 PM)
ok 4 outs, one homer
matt stein norwalk ohio
i think hamilton might have screwed himself having that old dude throw for him. he is going to be inconsistant i think and start swinging and stuff out of his hot spot. good luck to him though. it would be an amazing story for him to win this after all that he has gone through.
Amy Nelson (8:42 PM)
six outs, one homer and michael kay just asked crowd to get behind him and they booed ... now they're booing him even more!
Amy Nelson (8:42 PM)
crowd chanting "we want jason" ..wow.
Amy Nelson (8:42 PM)
upper deck shot...
Amy Nelson (8:43 PM)
wow upper deck to left
Amy Nelson (8:43 PM)
7 outs and 3 hrs
Amy Nelson (8:43 PM)
tough spot to be in, rookie, in division, and you took giambi's potential spot
Amy Nelson (8:43 PM)
ok nine outs and 3 hrs
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
Where's the love for Morneau?
Amy Nelson (8:44 PM)
russell martin told me he was rooting for him, mistly becaise theyre both canadian
Amy Nelson (8:44 PM)
hes out and just got booed, BAD
Amy Nelson (8:44 PM)
that's so bad.
Jay (NY)
Morneau is Canadian right? Enough said.
Jared (CO)
Longoria shouldn't be there, he doesn't deserve it.
Jaime
Se habla espanol?
Amy Nelson (8:45 PM)
a veces...
Ian (Akron, OH)
typical new york fans for ya
Ryan Washington
Yankee fans have no class
Amy Nelson (8:45 PM)
it's their fault! not enough of them voted for giambi
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
I think Hamilton will win; but, Morneau hasn't even been mentioned!
Jeff (Moorestown, NJ)
No disrespect to these guys...they are all great players....but they need to change the rules. Adam Dunn, Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, Jason Giambi, Jim Thome and Vlad need to be in this. I think Dunn could even hit one over the right field facade!
Amy Nelson (8:45 PM)
utley getting booed again
Amy Nelson (8:45 PM)
he's up now...
Adam (baltimore,md)
bet youkilis would have put on a show
Mark (Dover, DE)
At least he was quick
Amy Nelson (8:45 PM)
point taken.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Well looks like Longoria will be one that doesn't advance.
Amy Nelson (8:46 PM)
one out, warning track
Ian (Akron, OH)
did they boo grady?
Amy Nelson (8:46 PM)
no they cheered him
Mark (Dover DE)
Here we go. Come on Chase. Drop the bombs!!!!
Jamie (Houston)
Amy, I heard yesterday Berkman was hitting RH, but when EY made his pick he said LH, do you know which way he's going? How many you think he'll hit?
Amy Nelson (8:46 PM)
it's righthanded
Amy Nelson (8:46 PM)
another out ... no hrs
Plum City WI
go braun
Amy Nelson (8:47 PM)
3 outs, 0 hrs
Ian (Akron, OH)
is Sabathia in this?
Amy Nelson (8:47 PM)
there we go, homer to right
Jamie (Houston)
Utley really struggling
Chad (Louisville, KY)
Booing at a HR derby is just wrong.
Amy Nelson (8:47 PM)
it's ny!
Amy Nelson (8:47 PM)
four outs and one homer
Amy Nelson (8:47 PM)
make that 5
William (Dublin, OH)
Talk about a lack of class. Doesn't Chase Utley know that children around the country are watching him. Millions of dollars and he can't stomach a few boos. Now he's up so I'm changing the channel for decorum sake. Ok enough of that, I'm taking Hamilton to win it.
Amy Nelson (8:48 PM)
another homer ... five outs and 2 homers
jon (Plum City, WI)
Ryan Braun is awsome
Amy Nelson (8:49 PM)
loudest cheer of the night was a kid in right who just caught utleys out
Amy Nelson (8:49 PM)
8 outs 2 hrs
Jay (NY)
I boo my grandmother when she walks too slow...it's what we do, get over it.
Amy Nelson (8:49 PM)
three homers, 8 outs
Ben (Dover, DE)
No one should boo a philly
Amy Nelson (8:50 PM)
ok nine outs, 3 hrs
Ian (Akron, OH)
berkman is batting right handed because thats how he won the derby back in houston acouple years ago
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
Longoria definitely deserves to be there. It's too bad he had a rough go.
Adam (baltimore,md)
amy if you had to pick someone from boston.. Who would it be? please don't say Papi
Amy Nelson (8:50 PM)
of course why not
Amy Nelson (8:50 PM)
4 hrs, 9 outs
Amy Nelson (8:50 PM)
that one was to center
evan (irvine, ca)
If my team's best player brushed off the homerun derby, I'd be bitter the whole night too.
Amy Nelson (8:51 PM)
nice.
Amy Nelson (8:51 PM)
another one .. upper deck to right.
Amy Nelson (8:51 PM)
5 hrs
ken IL
no mention on the plate being crooked to the batters box????
Amy Nelson (8:51 PM)
i have no idea what yure talking about
Amy Nelson (8:51 PM)
10 outs, he's done with 5 hrs
Amy Nelson (8:52 PM)
so sizemore and uggla are leading as of now, both with 6 hrs got four more to go in the first round
Mark (Dover DE)
Good job Chase.
Hamel NYC
YEA UTLEY CANT HIT ONE IN THIS PARK BUT SINCE THE FENCE IN HIS PARK IS ONLY 12 FEET THATS WHY HE HAS ALL THOSE HOMERS
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Hamel is blind or retarded. Or both.
ken IL
home plate is crooked to the batters bos they are not square to eachother
Amy Nelson (8:53 PM)
i cant see from that far away...
Mark (Dover DE)
Hey Hamel, lets see if the Yankees are any good in their new stadium.
Jay (NY)
I'm going to have to stop reading this chat, you're posting before I actually see it because of the HD feed. You're now known as Amy Spoiler Nelson.
Amy Nelson (8:54 PM)
wow, that's a first really? wireless here must be that good...
Amy Nelson (8:54 PM)
i can slow it down slightly
GSR sacramento CA
Why are they interviewing people during the derby? I just want to watch the derby not interviews.
Amy Nelson (8:54 PM)
who are they interviewing
Mark (Dover DE)
Amy, he is right the HD Feed is just a little behind.
Amy Nelson (8:57 PM)
intestting well we've had about five minutes of commercials to pass the time ... when tristan cockcroft takes over for me on the chat you won't have the feed problem...
Amy Nelson (8:57 PM)
ok so he's batting from the leftside
Amy Nelson (8:57 PM)
this is berkman...
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
Where is Ryan Howard when you need a real slugger?
Amy Nelson (8:57 PM)
one out
Amy Nelson (8:58 PM)
ok now we've got two outs...
Amy Nelson (8:58 PM)
there's a bomb to upper deck in right
Amy Nelson (8:58 PM)
3 outs, one homer
Eric (Houston)
As much money as these guys are paid, I think MLB should make it mandatory for the top 4 HR leaders in each league be in the derby...
Amy Nelson (8:58 PM)
four outs
Amy Nelson (8:59 PM)
five outs...
Daniel MEXICO
Adam Dunn should be in the derby hitting the ball out of the park
Amy Nelson (8:59 PM)
six outs ... looks like he should have stuck with right side
Adrian (Chicago)
Why do you think it should be mandatory?
Amy Nelson (8:59 PM)
two homers ... to right
Amy Nelson (8:59 PM)
oh that's gone...
Kevin (Memphis)
Wow. This is gonna go down as the worst Derby ever.
Amy Nelson (9:00 PM)
there's another one that's gone ... seven outs, four homers
Adrian (Chicago)
This is all done for FUN.
Amy Nelson (9:00 PM)
last one was 476 feet
Amy Nelson (9:00 PM)
two more outs, just 4 hrs
Amy Nelson (9:00 PM)
line drive to right ... 5 hrs
dreux/baton rouge
berk is on fire
Amy Nelson (9:01 PM)
one out left
Amy Nelson (9:01 PM)
wow. another bomb to upper right deck
Amy Nelson (9:01 PM)
six hrs, 9 outs
Amy Nelson (9:01 PM)
berkamn got the lead 7 hrs
Amy Nelson (9:02 PM)
that was a shot, and the guy out in center caight it!
Amy Nelson (9:02 PM)
ok so he's got 8 hrs now and in the lead
Mark (Dover DE)
Great catch kid.
Adrian (Chicago)
We have a new leader!
dreux
i agree w/ kevin----bad derby
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
It shouldn't be mandatory. Player's should compete at their own free will. No one should be coerced into the Derby.
mike (philly)
no need to interview david stinking wright, a stinking met, while i'm trying to watch utley. any common sense in the production booth? or likely a stinking met fan pulling that little stunt.
Amy Nelson (9:03 PM)
hah! i dont think it was premeditated...
Jay (NY)
My roommate thinks I'm psychic I'm telling him what is happening before each pitch.
Amy Nelson (9:03 PM)
that's great ,,, sort of. you must really have a bad delay becaise i've been waiting to post
Kevin (Memphis)
to Adrian in Chicago---Yeah it's done for fun but it's done for the fans and when the best HR hitters arent participating it's dissapointing. Why can't the players say "Thank you" to the fans who buy tickets and memorabilia to pay their salaries?
Ben (Dover, DE)
He started out bad...nice comeback
mel Philadelphia
Well, Ryan Howard participated last year, even though he wasn't picked for the All-Star team
Mike Chicago,IL
wow lance berkman..kinda shocks me
GSR sacramento CA
Jack Cust should be in the derby.
EL DUB, Cherry Hill, NJ
Who gives up more HRs per at-bat: the pitchers in the HR Derby or Brett Myers? Will Myers return to form in the 2nd half and help the Phils win the NL East?
Amy Nelson (9:04 PM)
sheesh ,,,, tough call. i'd bet he'll come back and contribute.
Ben (Dover, DE)
Well it obvious that the phillies are better than the mets
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Jay must go through satellite...they're pretty slow
Amy Nelson (9:05 PM)
so berkman leads with 8, sizemore and uggla tied with 6 those are your leaders
Amy Nelson (9:05 PM)
justin morneau is next then ryan braun
Amy Nelson (9:06 PM)
berkman;s got the longest homer, at 476
Justin (LA)
I'm really missing the sweet swing of Ken Griffey Jr. this Derby.
Ryan(madison,wi)
Crappy tickets were going for $500+ today. For that money the fans should get to vote in the participants.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Zito's ERA is still higher than Berkman's pitcher's.
Amy Nelson (9:07 PM)
rouch, rivera was just interviewed and got a big applause.
jon (Plum City, WI)
moreau will get like 3 homers
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
Here we go, it's time for Mount Mourneau!
Eric (Houston)
thank you Kevin in Memphis...this is for the fans
Mark (Dover DE)
You got that right Ben
Amy Nelson (9:08 PM)
ok so we've got one out
Amy Nelson (9:08 PM)
that one just fell below us in right ... one hr one out
Jay (NY)
The prices were insane, the face value was $400 for bleacher seats.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
WoW! Berkman just went off! Hamilton has his work cut out for him.
Jay (NY)
Ben you do realize the Mets have been awful this year and are only a 1/2 game back? Santana is a second half pitcher and they're gonna sign Tim Teuffel for 2nd.
Justin (LA)
For $500+/ticket fans should get to throw pitches to their favorite batter. Outrageous prices for the derby.
Mel
What particularly galls about the Wright interview is that he's there and Burrell's not. So, it may not SEEM premediated but it sure looks odd.
Amy Nelson (9:09 PM)
ok i can understand that
Amy Nelson (9:10 PM)
five outs and two homers
Amy Nelson (9:10 PM)
tough crowd here ...michale kay hardest job tonight he can't get anyone to cheer
William (Dublin, OH)
Not sure who it was (Rick Reilly maybe) but one of the announces just mentioned that 5 of the top 25 HR hitters of all times are active players and none of them are there.
dreux/br
how about the comments about no hispanics or blacks...we will hear more tommorrow..count on it..of course, i noticed that immediately, also
Amy Nelson (9:11 PM)
well this is an event hat should feature the diversity of its game i thin kit's ridiculous there aren't any hispanic players, and sizemore's dad is african american
Amy Nelson (9:11 PM)
wow upper deck shot so he has six homers and 7 outs
Kevin (Memphis)
$500 is pretty ridiculous. You could fill up your car like 3 times with that kind of money.
Jenna: (Mpls):
Morneau deserves to be there just as much as anyone else. Jerks.
Amy Nelson (9:12 PM)
another one crushed ... seven homers seven outs
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Ortiz is hurt, Vlad didn't want to defend, Albert is hurt, sure Adrian Gonzalez is good but he's not the name Morneau is. Morneau won an MVP
Amy Nelson (9:12 PM)
fair enough still wish gonzalez was in it
Amy Nelson (9:13 PM)
just tied berkman he's got 8
Amy Nelson (9:13 PM)
so he's officially tied ... now he just got a nice applause
Amy Nelson (9:13 PM)
so braun and hamilton are the only ones left. can't wait to see hamilton i hope he makes it into second round, just because he;s a beast and it'd be a great story
Keith (Florida)
Nice call to question the selection of Morneau for the HR Derby, just before he tied for the lead.
Boom Boom Sock A Joom Joom (Slovenia)
What a fluid swing. Smoooooooth.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
Yeah, what about Griffey Jr. it seems like the fans have forgotten him.
Adrian (Chicago)
Vlad should be in NY defending his title!
jon (Plum City, WI)
lets go brauny
mike (ny)
back to the longoria booing, didn't they ask him to be a part of the derby and he refused?
Amy Nelson (9:14 PM)
yes giambi said he would have had he been voted into the all-star game
Amy Nelson (9:14 PM)
ok heres braun ,,, with his agent nez balelo throwing to him
Amy Nelson (9:15 PM)
nez used to be a professional pitcher with the phillies in the 80s, and he throws to braun in the winter
Chuck (Baton Rouge)
J Hamilton will get atleast 12, I am feeling 15
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
HAM-IL-TON HAM-IL-TON!!
Boom Boom Sock A Joom Joom (Slovenia)
If Vlad and A-Rod were both in this thing, I would actually be watching this in interest.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Vlad has more important things to worry about. Like staying healthy for a playoff run. He ain't no spring chicken.
Jay (NY)
See we're not so bad, we cheered a Canadian. That brings us to the obvious statement that Canadians are better than people from Phily.
dreux
well, a-rod showed his selfish true colors again....even if he would be madonnafied..for 300 million..mlb should have made sure of his appearance
Amy Nelson (9:16 PM)
three outs and no homers
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
I am a bit surprised though. As good as Morneau has been, he's only got 14 homers and is tied with Jason Kubel for the Twins team lead. There's no doubt, he's got a nice HR swing. I think he's just a very unselfish player who aims for contact and RBI a lot more often than other sluggers.
Amy Nelson (9:16 PM)
six outs and no homers ... rouch.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Ryan Braun looks like Brendan Fraser.
Amy Nelson (9:17 PM)
i can see that ...
Amy Nelson (9:17 PM)
there we go, a homer to center
Amy Nelson (9:17 PM)
two homers ... this one to left.
Amy Nelson (9:18 PM)
Amy Nelson (9:18 PM)
upper deck shot there to left...three hoemrs six outs
William (Dublin, OH)
I think the real story with Hamilton is not how many he hits tonight but who he brought to throw. He is thanking the people that got him here, then helped him get back!!
Amy Nelson (9:19 PM)
four homers and eight outs ...
Amy Nelson (9:19 PM)
another shot to left field...
Amy Nelson (9:20 PM)
six homers ... he's now tied with uggla and sizemore.
Amy Nelson (9:20 PM)
there goes another, this one to right ... two outs left seven hrs
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Anyone else notice the guy with the highest percentage of homers to opposite field? Josh Hamilton. That's why I think he'll win.
Amy Nelson (9:21 PM)
ok so that's a wrap, he got 7 homers. third place ...
Amy Nelson (9:21 PM)
ok the guy we've all been waiting for ... hamilton.
Austin
How's the view from your seats?
Amy Nelson (9:22 PM)
pretty sweet ...
jon (Plum City, WI)

Amy Nelson (9:23 PM)

Chris ( St.louis, MO)
who is leading the pack?
Amy Nelson (9:23 PM)
berkman and morneau tied with 8
Barry (New York, NY)
Got to agree with the Josh Hamilton call.Granted, that being said, he's guaranteed to go 0-10. It's always a surprise.
William (Dublin, OH)
IT'S HAMILTIME!!!
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Gotta give Braun credit - 0 and 6 to start and now is going to round 2...
Kevin (Memphis)
I'm gonna say 7
jon (Plum City, WI)
i say 9 homers for hamilton
Mark (Dover, DE)
532 hr's. How's that for a prediction
Ryan(madison,wi)
5 hrs for Hamilton.
Austin
I predict about 8 maybe 9
William (Dublin, OH)
I'll give him 10 in round one.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
I'll take 8
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
It'd be nice to see at least one of these guys hit 10+ ... I think it's great Hamilton's got a sentimental choice for his pitcher. I'm also a bit leery and think it'll be interesting to see how this guy's control is.
Jamal (Compton,CA)
9 for Hamilton
Ben (Dover, DE)
6 for Hamilton
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
Im with Ryan -- 5 hrs for Josh
dave (nj)
the home run derby isnt what is used to be no power hitters in it
Amy Nelson (9:26 PM)
ok here we go with hamilton
Kenny (New Castle De)
I say 9
Amy Nelson (9:27 PM)
first one, BOMB to right center...
Jordan (Slinger, WI)
To just GET to the HR Derby is a testament to Hamilton's great strides in his personal life.
Jay (NY)
Definitely a 6 pack for Hamilton.

Amy Nelson (9:28 PM)
that got all the players up too ...
Amy Nelson (9:29 PM)
three outs ... two homers.
Jamal (Compton,CA)

Rusty(Chattanooga TN)

Amy Nelson (9:31 PM)
we'll see likely not
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
The old man knows how to pitch!!
Amy Nelson (9:31 PM)
ok we're at five outs ... six homers crowd giving him a big applause for support
Amy Nelson (9:31 PM)
another one, this time to right. seven homers and five outs
Amy Nelson (9:32 PM)
he's alreayd in next round, milton bradley just came out with a towel
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
HAM-IL-TON! HAM-IL-TON!
Robert (Minneapolis MN)
Holly Cow.... What a shot...
Amy Nelson (9:32 PM)
theres one to center they've all been to center and right field so far that's 8 if you're counting
Amy Nelson (9:33 PM)
oooohhhh fan interference ... tough ruling, ump said no.
Amy Nelson (9:33 PM)
the bleacher bums giving it to the ump BAD
Amy Nelson (9:33 PM)
ooohhh that one came right to us, in right. he's got 9 homers and six outs...
Lance, Grand Prairie, TX
That shot would have hit my aprtment if this was at the Ballpark
Amy Nelson (9:34 PM)
wow that one looked like it was going to be out of the stadium
Kevin (Memphis)
Would have been nice to see Ankiel in the derby. A showdown with him and Hamilton would have been a great story.
Josh (Lincoln, NE)
Holy hell. This is amazing.
Sean (Spokane)
Hamilton is making it rain!!!
Amy Nelson (9:35 PM)
another one! 11 homers and five outs
Matt (Australia)
MLB should have had Hamilton go earlier to get the crowd going!
Amy Nelson (9:35 PM)
true but they want people watching that's why he's last
Amy Nelson (9:35 PM)
we've got 12 homers and 6 outs
Amy Nelson (9:36 PM)
ok so the 7th out ...
Amy Nelson (9:36 PM)
13 homers and 7 outs ...
Amy Nelson (9:37 PM)
ok so that's um 14 i'd say the majority absolutely crushed.
swish (detroit rock city)
I so wish that Hamilton was a Tiger. What a freaking story.
Amy Nelson (9:37 PM)
i believe it might be abreu who i thin had 23
dave (nj)
why does he have an old man throwing to him?
Amy Nelson (9:37 PM)
yes 71 years old awesome
Brian Dayton, OH
Damn Reds traded him away, too...at least they got Volquez for him
Amy Nelson (9:38 PM)
thought we had the first oppo but it fell short
Amy Nelson (9:38 PM)
two outs, 15 hrs
Arlington Tx
I have been a rangers fan for 19 years.... and he makes me happy to be here! H A M I L T O N
Robert (Minneapolis MN)
He's got to get tired soon.... Where is this coming from?
Amy Nelson (9:38 PM)
there's another one out to center
Mark (Dover DE)
Old man was hitting coach right?
Amy Nelson (9:39 PM)
yeah since he was 11
Amy Nelson (9:39 PM)
wow some guy just jumped into theblack and was running awat from the cops awesome
Amy Nelson (9:40 PM)
wow ok this is ridiculous ... 18 homers and 8 outs
Ben (Dover, DE)
Abreu sucked after he came back from the derby...he couldnt hit the ball to save his life
Amy Nelson (9:40 PM)
this is sick ... 19 homers
Mike (NJ)
OH MY GOD
Jay (NY)
Bad boys Bad boys! What you gonna do?
Amy Nelson (9:41 PM)
o kthere's another one to center field ... honestly the media are even getting into this. pretty cool
Adrian (Chicago)
Wow! Home Run Derby is over! Just give the trophy to Hamilton!
Amy Nelson (9:42 PM)
thre's another one ... 22 hoemrs
beau(norfolk VA)
is he ever going to stop??????
Franky (Chicago)
I think Josh is gonna win this one. He has the magic in him. Somebody is giving it to him...
Amy Nelson (9:43 PM)
another one ... so we're at 23 homers. 8 outs
Amy Nelson (9:43 PM)
they're chanting HAMIL-TON
Jonathan (Hopkinsville, KY)
I don't care if he stops or not...this guy is putting on a show!
Justin (chicago)
Sad part is he probably won't win tonite. Happens every year. Guy goes on a tear in first round, some other guy outlasts.
Jonathan (Hopkinsville, KY)
Josh Hamilton...WOW!
Amy Nelson (9:43 PM)
ok that's 24 so now it ties the all-time record
AK (BOS)
No one else is going to his 23 TOTAL. Just skip the rest, it's rover.
Mark (Dover DE)
Guess I was the closest with my prediction of 523 hr's no matter what he finally gets
William (Dublin, OH)
Someone get his pitcher a drink of water, he's got to be getting tired.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
Hamilton is off his freakin chain! The man has gone wild!
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
I just looked up the records ... Abreu hit 24 in a single round and 41 total in 2005, both are records that could be broke tonight!
dave (nj)
this kid is unbelieveable
Sean (Spokane)
Is it Josh Hamilton vs everyone else combined?
Amy Nelson (9:45 PM)
just set the new record, single-round record for a derby
Amy Nelson (9:45 PM)
they're chanting HAMIL-TON ... amazing.
Ben (Dover, DE)
You got that right Justin...berkman will probably outlast hamilton
Phil Orlando, Fl.
What a story!!! Truely inspirational!!
Chris (Oklahoma)
umm hamilton will be here all night!!!!
Franky (Chicago)
His swing is just perfect...
Brian Dayton, OH
Yeah you're right, Justin...I was just thinking that. Round-by-round makes it exciting, but overall HRs would be more fair, in a way
Robert (Minneapolis MN)
Win or not... What a show... I am a Hamil-TON fan....
Amy Nelson (9:47 PM)
ok there;s another one 27 guys, and he's still got 2 more outs.
dave (grand forks nd)
just incredible....
Jonathan (Hopkinsville, KY)
Tonight is proving why baseball is truly the greatest game...This is unreal!
Phil
Bet on it--30 homers!!!
Jamie, Steamboat Springs, CO
just insane!!
Scott (Orem, UT)
This is amazing and I'm happy to be watching it..
RYan(madison,wi)
Where are all the people saying "this is the worst derby ever" now?
Mike (NJ)
I am a lifelong Yankee fan. Seeing this at Yankee Stadium is absolutely amazing.
Amy Nelson (9:48 PM)
just fouled ... one more out 28 hrs
Chris (Worcester, Mass)
My money is on Josh Hamilton
Amy Nelson (9:48 PM)
ok that'll do it 28 homers
Amy Nelson (9:48 PM)
standing ovation
Amy Nelson (9:49 PM)
a whole bunc of players surroudning him pretty cool scene
Amy Nelson (9:49 PM)
ok guys with that tristan cockcroft will be taking ovewr for me the rest of the way. thanks all enjoy the rest of the derby !!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:51 PM)
Howdy everyone! What a round by Josh Hamilton ... though let's be fair with the stats, "Other seven hitters" 43, Hamilton 28. They beat him! Really, though, incredible round. Better than McGwire's back in Fenway, and boy, I enjoyed that one...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:52 PM)
Incidentally, who's with me on the idea that to rest up for the finals (if he truly wants to win), Hamilton bunts 10 straight times in Round 2? Um, I'd think he probably breezes through this round, no?
Mark (Dover DE)
By Amy, Hello tristan
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:52 PM)
Hello Mark! Glad to be here...
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
I think the old man can still go 9 innings!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:53 PM)
Yes, gotta hand it to Mr. Counsil, he sure did his job and did it well ... love the little break to towel off. He earned it!
AK (BOS)
Clay Counsil currently owns the worst ERA in the history of baseball.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:55 PM)
Ha! Though, you know, after that inning what's his name for the Rangers tossed against the Yanks the other day -- Madrigal? -- sure looked like he might hold it for a bit.
Andy (Cape Coral,FL.)
1st time watching the derby....total combined HR's wins right?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:55 PM)
No, total homers between Rounds 1 and 2 now take a guy into the finals, and then from there the slate is wiped clean. High total in that round wins it.
Jordan (Dayton, OH)
Or the best ERA depending on how you look at it......
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:56 PM)
I dunno, high ERAs generally don't win me my fantasy title, so ... that said, I did once or twice play in a reverse-fantasy league, where you wanted seasons like Nick Punto's 2007!
cameron wisconsin
whats the record for total hrs in a derby?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:57 PM)
I believe that was Abreu's with 41, but I will double-check that to be sure for you, Cameron...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:57 PM)
So here we go ... Round 2, Hamilton 28, Berkman and Morneau 8, Braun 7, to kick it off.
dave (nj)
hey tristan kind of an odd question here just looked up info on yankee stadium and from what i read it said it was built in 1923 so my question is is this the original yankee stadium?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:58 PM)
It was refurbished in the 1970s, so that's kind of a point of debate, whether it's the "original" or not.
J,Smith (Swiftwater, Pa)
Tristan,Cant watch, at work, can you tell me his long? cant believe i'm missing it!!!!!!!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:59 PM)
We have it listed on the site at 512. And Berkman is up to 12 homers, 6 outs.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (9:59 PM)
13 now, and 7 outs
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:00 PM)
Boy, Berkman picked a bad one to swing at there, for his eighth out. Almost on his feet, that one.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:00 PM)
No. 14 just went, followed by Out No. 10 on the gold ball...
Abbi (Plano, TX)
Watching Josh hit those homers was worth sitting through the last two years of Rangers Baseball.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:01 PM)
I really like that Rangers offense this year, Abbi. Big Hamilton, Ian Kinsler and Milton Bradley fan for '08. Have been, will remain.
dave (nj)
i remember as a little boy going to see relatives who live near yankee stadium and remembering passing by it back in 77 i think and it looked brand new
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:01 PM)
Well, it reopened in 1976.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:02 PM)
Here we go, Morneau's turn...
Mike (nj)
I just spoke to two other Yankee fans and we have never seen any balls hit like that at Yankee stadium. Amazing
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:02 PM)
I haven't either, and I've been a fan of theirs for a long, long time. Always feel like "the black" is the standard for a long blast here.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:03 PM)
Ouch. Almost for Morneau, right off the left-center wall.
Gabe (New Britain, CT)
The story of the night is without a doubt Josh!
austin huff
what about josh hamilton hitting 28 long balls? i think it was a waste of energy....will he keep the lead or will he give it up?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:03 PM)
We shall soon see!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:03 PM)
There goes one for Justin ... he's up to 9.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:04 PM)
Up to 10... But 4 outs!
craig cleveland ohio
how do get to watch it on the computer?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:04 PM)
We've got the tracker up on the MLB page.
Louie (Buffalo)
Morneau needs to get under these a bit more
C Phalen (St. Petersburg, FL)
Man I wish we still had Josh on the Rays...we went through a lot to support Josh in turmoil years, and I am SO happy to see this amazing talent back on the diamond
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:05 PM)
12 homers, 6 outs...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:05 PM)
Right into the press box, No. 13!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:06 PM)
Well, Morneau is now guaranteed at least a "swing-off," with No. 14
Mike (Philadelphia, PA)
With all the HRs Hamilton hit in the 1st round, I wonder if Hamilton will hit in the 2nd round.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:06 PM)
Abreu hit 6 in the second round the year he had 24 in the first round...
Ron, Winston-Salem, NC
Clay Council, Hamilton's pitcher, was my Junior League (13-15 yr olds) coach in Cary, NC back in the early 70's. He has pithed many a batting practice pitch to me, too! What a thrill to see him looking great. Council nearly made the big leagues in the Giants organization years ago. He was Willie McCovey's roommate, iirc.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:07 PM)
Morneau's eighth of the round, 16 total, nice drive that one was ... and now No. 17! Almost the same spot, too
St. Louis, MO
What is the chance Hamilton is going to knock one out of the stadium? How about a dramatic final where he hits a walk-off like 600 ft? There's a Yankee Stadium Memory you can sink your teeth into.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:08 PM)
I've always wanted to see that. Wish I had been able to see Mantle's drive way back when... alas, too young
john Z, geneva NY
Too bad previous rounds don't count in the final round but I guess it makes sense (to add drama)
jim, buffalo ny
was hamilton's 14th ball out of the park?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:10 PM)
No, I think the longest one was the one off the BoA sign in right-center. I've seen countless games here and never seen one go that far.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:11 PM)
Morneau's 17 homers have him in second for now, Braun's up, needs 10 to tie him.
george(ny)
was that an 71 yr old guy or billy wagner in the 9th they both gave up the same amout or hr
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:11 PM)
Brace yourself for the Met-fan responses, folks...
Kevin (Memphis)
So if no one gets to 28 in the second round, will Hamilton even hit?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:12 PM)
He probably will just to keep his groove, but I bet he's not close to as into it as in last round!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:13 PM)
So here we go, one of my personal faves for fantasy, Mr. Braun...
Justin-Dallas,Tx
you realize it doesnt matter who wins it now unless its hamilton...more people are going to be talking about the first round 28 than who wins lol...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:13 PM)
That's often the case ... I mentioned Big Mac in '99, he didn't win.
jon (Plum City, WI)
what happens if they tie?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:14 PM)
Swing off.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:14 PM)
I just love Ryan Braun's swing, so conducive to a contest like this. And back-to-back homers to kick his round 2 off...
Nick (Maple Lake, MN)
Braun will not get in the finals. Sorry Tristan
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:14 PM)
We shall see! But I wouldn't be surprised. He's got work to do!
Nick (Boston)
Tie ---> battle to the death with broken bats.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:15 PM)
With all the maple bat talk this year, ouch. Sounds painful.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
I expected more out of Braun in the derby, he's a monster in the regular season!
Scott (Orem, UT)
I want to see someone hit one at the Baseball 2nite crew.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:16 PM)
I think they did get hit once in the game at PNC. Dangerous out there ... A-Rod once hit one out there, right near where they're sitting.
george(ny)
the hr derby really messes up your swing thats why alot of big name guys skip it
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:16 PM)
I think it's overblown, but that's me.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:16 PM)
Braun's in a slump now. Up to five outs, but three homers this round.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:17 PM)
There we go! No. 11!
tom
brauns falling apart...think clays arm will last another round?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:17 PM)
He's loving this. I'm sure he'll be a-OK. I know I would!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:17 PM)
12 for my boy Braun...
AK (BOS)
Read Jayson Stark's latest article, George (ny). that's a myth.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:18 PM)
That's 13!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:19 PM)
Braun has 7 in Round 1, now 7 in Round 2! 6 outs though.
Lance (Fond du Lac, WI)
3 more to go, Brauny!!! lets go!
george(ny)
i lost interest when the stache did not attend i mean come in ny and no giambi
Jon (Cincinnati)
Good to see Hamilton tear it up. He's breakin the hearts of Reds fans everyday. Volquez ain't bad though...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:19 PM)
No, I don't think Reds fans are complaining one bit about that trade...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:20 PM)
Brauny is sure getting under these, up to 9 outs...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:20 PM)
And that'll do it for Braun, he finishes with 14, 3 short of Morneau.
Nick (Boston)
Go Morneau. Go Morneau. Papa needs a new pair of shoes.
Kevin (Boston)
do you think arod shoulda been in this
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:21 PM)
Yes, but I can respect him not wanting to play. His choice, that's the way it is.
Mark - Houston, TX
Go Ham Slamwich!
KMacK
Morneau vs. Hamilton..could be interesting...former MVP vs. this years MVP
Lance (fond du lac, WI)
good run for Brauny. hopefully we see him get hot after the break.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:21 PM)
Let's hope he saved some of these bombs for our second halves, yes!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:22 PM)
Here we go, Hamilton's second round...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:22 PM)
And his first swing is a homer. Amazing.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:22 PM)
And another!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:23 PM)
Wow, Josh Hamilton makes OUTS?
Nick (Maple Lake, MN)
See Tristan don't count Morneau out when the games in the line. Only hits game winning home runs. LOL
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:23 PM)
He sure doesn't know the rules of the contest for sure, though! I'm a fantasy guy, as I always say, know the rules going in!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:23 PM)
Hamilton is now nine away from the Derby total record.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
How many homers do you think He'll end up with?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:24 PM)
With the groove he's on, I think he's getting to 45 for the night.
Lance (fond du lac, WI)
being from WI, I have to jump on the Josh Hamilton bandwagon, now.
Nick (Boston)
Did someone say sandwich?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:24 PM)
Yeah, I'm hungry too
jon (Plum City, WI)
like 50
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:25 PM)
So Hamilton, in an "it didn't matter" round, hit four.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:25 PM)
Our finalists: Josh Hamilton, Justin Morneau. Could you ask for better, two lefties at Yankee Stadium?
Scott (Michigan)
Do you think they should have a skills competition like they do at the hockey all star break? Pitchers compete hitting spots. Outfielders compete throwing it home. Fast guys race around the bases.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:26 PM)
Hey, chicks dig the long ball, as they always say. Though I'd sure like to see Rick Ankiel gunning down baserunners from center.
souza84
what's the score?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:27 PM)
0-0. And to answer the next question on who's winning, the Bears.
Adam Gananoque Ontario
Make Canada proud Justin!!!
Tim Cincinnati, OH
I am complaining, the Reds should have traded dunn and cpatt
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:27 PM)
C-Patt! Ouch. Not a fan of his. What a career bust.
Jr (Miramar, Fl)
I love the Show Josh Hamilton in putting on tonight on the HRD but MLB should make it a Fan vote choice for the contestants we wanna see on the HRD i'm sure they are getting their $$$ as it is why can't we have the real deal step up to the plate...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:28 PM)
Considering the increase in appeal in this thing, I'd have to agree with that. I'd love to vote for the entrants, and maybe it'd make them less likely to bow out, knowing we specifically requested them to play.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
He's slowing down a bit I bet he doesn't even break the record. But I still say Hamilton walks away with the trophy tonight!
Jordan (Dayton, OH)
so the new x-files movie looks pretty good.....
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:29 PM)
I'm still more interested in the new Batman.
cameron wisconsin
whos winning the nl central tristan?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:29 PM)
Hard to imagine the Cubs not winning it, I think they have the best team, but I do think the Brewers finish second, and not that far off, really. Strong wild-card contender.
Mike (NJ)
I only wish Bobby Murcer survived to see this all star game at the Stadium. He would have loved this.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:30 PM)
I agree, Mike, and I am going to miss Bobby. It's a terrible loss, and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Lance (Fond du Lac, WI)
I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees snag Hamilton once he becomes a FA. The way he's been hittin them tonight in that park, you've gotta imagine that the Yankees will make a run at him.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:31 PM)
Shame they'll be in a new park then. Though, the new park is supposed to play a lot like this one.
cameron wisconsin
you were suppost to say the cardinals
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:31 PM)
I know, but I just can't pick those Cardinals magicians doing this again. I don't know how Tony and Dave do it!
From The Goat (TO CUBS)
KEEP DREAMING!! NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
Ray, Seminole Fl
wait the Bears play baseball too?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:32 PM)
The Newark Bears do.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:32 PM)
So apparently Hamilton has a weakness: He's not great at called shots. Hey, can't be perfect!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:33 PM)
Morneau's turn for a called shot. I think he pointed at the BoA sign!
Lance (Fond du Lac, WI)
thanks for givin the Brewers some love, tristan. glad to know that not everyone is a Cubs fan.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:34 PM)
Anyone else got some playoff-team picks they want to share?
Lance (Fond du Lac, WI)
yeah, what's up with these called shots? I never remember this from previous years.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:34 PM)
Nor do I. There's always a new addition each year, though.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:34 PM)
Morneau couldn't do it either, sadly.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:35 PM)
So we're starting at 0-0 with a Morneau-Hamilton contest here in the finals. Morneau bats first...
cameron wisconsin
angels and phillies world series
Ben (chicago)
Cubs vs Sox world series Sox in 6!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:35 PM)
Which Sox though?
Wally (Dayton, OH)
A Josh Hamilton movie would be way better than the Batman and x-files movies.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:35 PM)
I bet we're going to see one someday. But the story's still not finished being written!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:36 PM)
2 straight outs for Morneau.
Mike, Gahanna, OH
Mets and Red Sox all over again in the series.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:36 PM)
Morneau's first reaches the upper deck, above the Modell's sign!
Tim, Cincinnati, OH
Milwaukee with the Central, Reds making a Wildcard apprearance
Stephen (Dallas,TX)
How bout the rangers making it out of the AL West? Best offense in the league, Most home games left in the AL, play the Angels several times.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:36 PM)
Don't have the pitching. At least I don't think.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:37 PM)
Morneau puts No. 2 out to center.
ben (chicago)
White Sox
Andy (Cape Coral,FL.)
Cubs/White sox...cubs sweep
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
So, who's gonna win. Well, Morneau is is better condition as of now, but I think Hamilton's special night continues and he ekes it out over Morneau.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:37 PM)
Looking good for Josh so far. Morneau has six outs, 2 HR.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:37 PM)
And seven outs. Gotta hit a groove!
jon (Plum City, WI)
red sox vs. brewers world series
Lance (Fond du Lac, WI)
I've got the Brewers and Rays, with the Crew winning in 6!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:38 PM)
Upper-deck shot! No. 3.
mb (Red Sox Nation)
Wait till Papi comes back, with the the depth at picther, the sox go all the way
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:38 PM)
I have a hard time picking against the Red Sox, myself. Best all-around team.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:38 PM)
Gold ball time for Justin Morneau. He has three homers so far.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:39 PM)
Anyone else think the gold balls look kinda neat? I know I do. First one gets into the bleachers for Morneau!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:39 PM)
And another gold-ball homer, down the ramp of the upper deck!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:40 PM)
And that's that, he hit five...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:40 PM)
Don't know how many of you have sat up in the tier reserve in the outfields at Yankee Stadium, but boy, that is a shot to get it up over the walkway, or down the ramp... incredible
Jeremy (Austin, Tx)
Hey Tristan, how many years before the Rangers are an actual contender?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:41 PM)
Someday they need to get a real, franchise-caliber pitcher. "DVD" didn't work out, sadly, and two-thirds of that is now excelling with other teams! If Danks and Volquez were there, imagine that? Hitting's usually there. I do think it's going to take a couple years, barring the team somehow inking a CC and maybe getting a smart trade for another strong arm.
Dan (NY)
Josh Hamilton should be in the HRD every year, after what he did earlier.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:42 PM)
Well, I thought Ryan Howard should, too, but alas...
Rick Fauci-Texan
Hey Jeremy, Next year, with a nice year this year
steve, (DC)
Does Hamilton just keep going if he gets 6?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:42 PM)
I think if memory serves from a year ago, he stops once he passes Morneau. You heard me, I said "once he passes."
tirk (new orleans)
yes he will continue.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:44 PM)
It'd be the only way he's breaking Abreu's full-Derby record.
Justin (L.A.)
I'll take an Angels vs Cubs W.S. with Angels in 7.
dan syracuse,ny
who's the better story, rick ankiel or josh hamilton?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:45 PM)
They are both great stories, but you know, I think Hamilton's is a little higher in my book. He's been one of the best players in all of baseball this year, better numbers easily.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:45 PM)
And awaaaaaay we go!
Jeremy (Austin, Tx)
Thanks Rick! Tristan, I'm still waiting on the stat for the longest homerun in derby record...just saying
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:45 PM)
I wish I knew that off the top of my head, Jeremy. Too much time to check now during our chat, e-mail me on that and I'll see what I can find out...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:46 PM)
C'mon Josh, pull 'em to the short porch! First out was a bit short to left-center.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:46 PM)
There's one, deep into the bleachers
Aaron (Houston, Tx)
Tristan, my league is chatting, help me out. Figgins and chris young (SD) for victorino? i have crede at third.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:47 PM)
Young is about three weeks off returning, and I'd say his side is a little more valuable overall. I'm chatting more fantasy tomorrow morning at 11, by the way (shameless plug time!).
Brian (Dayton, OH)
Any Rookie of the Year votes here? I'll go for Longoria and Soto (so far)
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:47 PM)
If Longoria doesn't win, I'll be amazed ... because it'll mean he cooled off, which I wasn't expecting. Total believer right here.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:47 PM)
Hamilton up to four outs, with one homer.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:47 PM)
Ham-il-ton chant starts and then he belts No. 2!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:48 PM)
Soooo close. Hit the WB Mason sign...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:48 PM)
Halfway to the 10 outs for Hammy, and 2 HR.
Nick (Maple Lake, MN)
Hey Tristan, what are the odds of the twins getting beltre from seattle
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:48 PM)
I honestly think the contract is going to be the problem. He'd be a good pickup for the Twins though.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:48 PM)
Morneau belts No. 3! Three more...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:49 PM)
491 feet there
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:49 PM)
Six outs
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:49 PM)
Now he's swinging at some shaky pitches... 7 outs
Josh (Natick, MA)
Tristan, any chance the Cards make a big trade to counter the Sabathia and Harden deals? Thanks.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:50 PM)
I don't see any of the other arms on the market looking quite so high-impact, sadly. Maybe Burnett? Bedard?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:50 PM)
Up to eight outs...
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
I think he used up too much energy in the first round!
Ray, Seminole Fl
longoria has my vote, great fielding ability and a solid hitter
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:50 PM)
He's looking a tad tired
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:51 PM)
Nine outs, up to the gold ball, and he has three homers.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:51 PM)
2 to tie, 3 to win
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:51 PM)
What pressure this must be!
Nick (Maple Lake, MN)
How about P Nick Blackbrun for rookie of the year?
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:51 PM)
Great year, sure, but not quite up there with Longoria's impact. Underrated story, though.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:51 PM)
And with that liner, Justin Morneau is our champ! A 6-3 winner...
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:52 PM)
Congrats to Justin Morneau, a former MVP, and now a Derby champ!
mb (Red Sox Nation)
Can't believe it, Mornoeu pulled it off. WOW!!
Jamie Denver
This is silly. They need to change to format. No one is going to remember the winner of this thing. Everybody will remember Hamilton.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:53 PM)
I think that's a valid point.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
That is sad to see such a performance and not get the win. Congrats to Morneau anyway!
Drew (flint, MI)
Marcus thames would have owned this derby.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:54 PM)
Big power that guy has. But you gotta warrant All-Star consideration!
Brian (Dayton, OH)
Congrats to Morneau but especially Hamilton, lol...28 HRs in one round, that's what will really be remembered here
mb (Red Sox Nation)
Morneau is on his way to an outstanding career. He is definitly a premier player in this league
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:55 PM)
I just want to see him avoid some of these second-half swoons he has experienced in the past. Hey, he's healthy for now, so we can hope. Great player.
Mike (philly, pa)
Would love to have seen a Ryan Howard v Josh Hamilton matchup.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:55 PM)
Me too. No knock on Josh, but Howard, with his uppercut swing and Derby experience, bet he'd be an even stronger bet to poke one out of this park.
Rusty(Chattanooga TN)
Bring back Ken Griffey Jr., he knows how to win a derby!
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:56 PM)
He was a master of these contests, for sure.
mb (Red Sox Nation)
Willy Mo Pena is another guy who could really do damage in a home run derby. He has so much power but can't hit the breaking ball.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:56 PM)
Awful, awful year he's having, though.
Jeff (Burnsville, MN)
'Atta boy, Justin! Doing Minnesota proud!!
Dan (NY)
Sure Howard has a chance, but he probably would have struck out 3 times.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:58 PM)
Amazing pace he's on. In both K's AND homers/RBIs!
Bryan (cincy, oh
adam dunn would dominate the derby he has the perfect swing for it
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:58 PM)
I could see that.
Mike (philly, pa)
New York fans booing Morneau. Stay classy New York, stay classy.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (10:59 PM)
Didn't notice a huge round, Mike, but who knows, wasn't Morneau's MVP the year Yankee fans wanted it to be Jeter?
Mike (philly, pa)
If Howard strikes out 3 times, then Dunn would strike out 4.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:00 PM)
Don't know about that, Mike. Just being fair, Howard's the K king. Better slugger, though, in my mind.
Tristan H. Cockcroft (11:00 PM)
Well, folks, time to put a wrap on things. It's been a lot of fun, and hope you enjoyed the Derby! I'll catch those of you fantasy folk in tomorrow morning's chat, hope to see you then...
