Chat: Texas Tech QB Cody Hodges
![]() |
Cody is currently thrid on the nation's passing efficiency list just behind Michigan State's Drew Stanton and Southern Cal's Matt Leinart. Hodges' undefeated Red Raiders are ranked as high as No. 13 for the first time since 1977. Tech opens conference play at home Saturday in Lubbock against Kansas.
Send in your questions to Cody now, join him Wednesday at 2 ET (1 CT) for all the answers.
Cody Hodges (2:01 PM)
Hello everyone. I'm ready for your questions!
Dean Murphey
Cody, did starting as a Freshman in Hereford help prepare you for starting here at Texas Tech?
Cody Hodges (2:03 PM)
I just think I learned to be a leader at a young age. You grow up real fast in that program. The QB is the leader of the whole group so I feel like I'm going back to that same role. I think I've adjusted pretty well for the first three games.
Jack: Lubbock, TX
Cody, I noticed in an article in the Lubbock Avalanche- Journal that Fiesta Bowl representatives were in attendance this past Saturday. Has this gotten the team thinking about a BCS berth?
Cody Hodges (2:04 PM)
I was unaware but I saw the article also. It gives us the knowledge to know that they might be looking at us but our goal is the same, to beat Kansas this week.
Jason (Garland, T)
Cody, I know you have sat behind some guys that could really put up some big numbers, do you think you are as good or better than they are? No Poltical Correctness here, do you think you guys can really hang with the Big Boys this year such as USC, Texas and Florida? I just dont' see it with the defense you guys have.
Cody Hodges (2:05 PM)
I think I have a lot of the same characterisitics. I learned a lot from watching them. I'm not really concerened with putting up huge numbers. If we win, the numbers will come. But I can't say if I'm as good or better. I still have a lot to prove.
Ryan (Lubbock,TX)
I have heard that the entire Tech Football team will go see a movie Friday night and then stay the night in a hotel. Is that true? What movies does the team watch? And, what other things do y'all do pre-game?
Cody Hodges (2:05 PM)
That is true. We all kind of stay together and have some down time. We try to stay off our feet as much as possible. The last one we saw was Lord of War. I give it a mediocre review. I'm not a huge Nicolas Cage fan.
Justin (Austin Texas)
Will Tech go undefeated this year?
Cody Hodges (2:06 PM)
That's a goal of ours. I won't make any bold predictions though. We are just focused on Kansas right now. Then we have Nebraska. So we have to concentrate on that.
Cody, Flower Mound Texas
Is Mike Leach as crazy as he seems?
Cody Hodges (2:07 PM)
(Laughing) I wouldn't use the word crazy. He's a different type of coach, very unique. He's a very laid back guy actually and easy to play for. It's a great offense to play in. I have a lot of respect for him.
Micah (Lubbock TX)
Cody, I know that Coach Leach has told you to look to pass first and foremost. But you undoubtedly have the ability to use your legs as well. Do you think you will look to still utilize your running ability now that Tech will be facing better teams?
Cody Hodges (2:08 PM)
I think I will. It will be a situation where if I have to run, I will. It's not something he will forbid me to do. We have enough other athletic guys who can do it better than myself. When I run, it's opening myself up to getting hit. But if I have to run, I'll try to make something happen.
Danny, San Angelo, Texas
Cody, what were the possibilites you were going to play basketball in college. I know you played in th THSRTC All Star Basketball game, but how many people receuited you for that?
Cody Hodges (2:09 PM)
Not very many recruited me for basketball. Some DII schools. I talked to Coach Knight about walking on but I had shoulder surgery and after that, I just wanted to get healthy for football.
Ryan-Lubbock
I know Kansas has a pretty decent D, Do you guys have some formations or plays that ya'll have not used yet this season saved up for the Kansas game?
Cody Hodges (2:10 PM)
We don't have anything we have saved for this game. Each week we just try to come up with the best scheme for that particular defense. Kansas is a very tough opponent. They have several All-Americans on that team. But we have a good scheme so far. We've practiced three days already. We just have to execute on Saturday.
Carrollton Texas
Cody, What is the most challenging thing to learn about Mike Leach's offense?
Cody Hodges (2:11 PM)
Not really the plays, but understanding what the defense is doing and how they are reacting. We have the green light to audible so it's all about realizing when to get out of a certain play based on the defense.
Tobin (Denver CO)
Cody, I have noticed that you have not used the shovel pass much. Why is that?
Cody Hodges (2:12 PM)
We haven't thought about it much. Depending on who we play, we might use it. We haven't been able to use it yet.
Brandon Tampa, FL
Cody, do you regret what you said about scoring 100? I know it was taken out of context by the media many times but, would you say it again?
Cody Hodges (2:13 PM)
I would say it again. It was a simple match equation. If we have the ball 15 times, we expect to score every time. That's our goal. We take a lot of pride in that. We don't want to go 3 and out, punt or kick a field goal. To win, we need to score touchdowns.
Mike, Mesquite, TX
Why did Mike Leach only allow you to speak for the entire Tech offense?
Cody Hodges (2:14 PM)
I don't know. Coach Leach started last year picking a spokesman for each side. He feels if too many guys talk, there can be distractions.
Jason (San Marcos, CA)
Do you have any NFL aspirations?
Cody Hodges (2:14 PM)
I do. If you don't, you are missing out on something. The odds aren't great to make it to the next level, but I'm going to try to go for it. I also know I've graduated so I can get a job in the real world.
Lubbock,TX
What do you have to say to all the critics who say we still should get no respect for beating "cupcake" teams?
Cody Hodges (2:15 PM)
That's just something we don't pay attention to. We didn't make our schedule. This is a true test this weekend. Hopefully we can answer some of those questions.
Chris (Dallas)
Do you think Tech should have to play on 200 yard fields in order to make it fair?
Cody Hodges (2:16 PM)
(Laughing) No! Every offense presents challenges to every other team.
justin (Indiana)
Do you ever run into the General(Bobby Knight) down there and if you do does he ever give you any tips?
Cody Hodges (2:16 PM)
I've seen him a few times at gold tournaments and such. But nothing has been said about basketball. He always wishes me the best and vice versa.
Alfonso Bernal Lubbock, Texas
What motivates a quaterback when he has to sit and wait to take over the reigns as the Texas Tech quarter back for five years.
Cody Hodges (2:17 PM)
Obviously I've had a good support system and I get along with everyone. I watched some great QBs and really learned from them.
Patrick
Do you feel comfortable with Texas Tech sitting at 13? Assuming an unblimished record heading to Austin, what should Tech be ranked?
Cody Hodges (2:18 PM)
As a team we don't pay attention to the polls. We have caught the attention of some people and that's good but we have to keep winning to stay there.
Ryan, Richardson
How does the rain affect your Bareback grip?
Cody Hodges (2:18 PM)
It really doesn't affect it. I grew up in this area and the weather changed everyday. Laces or no laces doesn't affect my control. I've just done it for so long it's second nature.
Steve (Waco)
What is your favorite place to hang out in Lubbock?
Cody Hodges (2:19 PM)
I go to church a lot. That is very important to me. I live with my brother and some other guys. I have a girlfriend and she's not a football fanatic so it's good to be with here and get away from it all. We also play putt putt every Thursday.
matt (Colorado Springs)
Cody, during your 5 years here at Texas Tech you have gotten to see alot of things (ups and downs). How is the energy different this year entering the season as well as right now versus years past?
Cody Hodges (2:21 PM)
I think as a team we are the most athletic we've been since I've been here. We just have the right people across the board. We are also older and more focused on the bigger picture. We know what we need to do each week and we don't overlook teams.
Joy (Plumville, AR)
Do you play the guitar?
Cody Hodges (2:21 PM)
I have no musical talent at all.
Tobin (Denver CO)
From what you ghave seen, is Chris Todd going to give Harrel a challenge for the starting job next year?
Cody Hodges (2:23 PM)
I don't know. Chris is very athletic but he doesn't have the experience. Harrell will have more reps under his belt. Chris will push him though so you never know what might happen. Thanks for the questions! Continue to root for the Red Raiders as we move in conference play!
