Ohm (2:01 PM)
Mike,Eli leads more by example but I think you want that fiery guy in the huddle. Jacobs fits that bill but he was hurt last year. Antonio Pierce was the guy on defense but then he got hurt and now is gone. The Giants do have a void defensively for that fiery outspoken guy. Justin Tuck doesn't seem to be that type of fiery guy. But I think he could step up and be a leader this year.
Ohm (2:02 PM)
Oh, forgot... just want to thank everyone for showing up and waiting patiently. Just got out of the locker room and the Jeff Feagles press conference and the first practice. A lot going on today. I will try to get to as much questions as possible. Thanks again!
Mike (Grand Rapids)
Are the Giants still looking at John Henderson? If they bring him in, who would be the odd man out?
Ohm (2:04 PM)
Mike, I think the Giants are interested in Henderson. He was supposed to visit with the Chiefs, who are very interested in the DT. If the Giants do bring him in, sounds like Barry Cofield will be the odd man out. There was a report that said he was nearly traded to New Orleans for a second-day pick during the draft but deal fell apart because Saints could not come to an agreement on an extension with Cofield.
brian (montclair, nj)
Are there any free agent options out there at MLB that you feel could be an upgrade from Goff/Blackburn/Dillard? I hate to harp on it, but the way i see this team, MLB is our major weakness...and the 2nd most important position on the team besides the QB.
Ohm (2:09 PM)
Brian,I wholeheartedly agree with you. That is why Rolando McClain was so important. After the Raiders took him, many were wondering if the Giants would go after Kirk Morrison but you saw him get traded to Jacksonville. Jerry Reese did not discount going outside and signing a veteran linebacker for camp if one gets cut eventually perhaps. But for now, you got those guys you mentioned.
Just curious... how does it feel growing up a Skins fan and now covering the Giants? Did you despise the Giants and rest of the NFCE as a kid?
Ohm (2:11 PM)
Chris! Ha ha! How did you know I was a Redskins fan. You know what, here is the honest truth. I loved the Redskins growing up and the NFC East. Some of my most painful memories growing up came at the hands of the Giants. Thanks LT for traumatizing me for life by breaking Joe T's leg. And thanks for terrorizing Jay Schroeder in that NFC championship game! But I will say this about the Giants. After covering them and being around them in the last five years, the Giants truly are a classy organization from top to bottom. And that comes from a childhood Redskins fan. Of course, when you become a sports writer, the fan in you dies. So I don't root for anybody outside of Michigan State and guys on my fantasy team! LOL.
Anyone stand out day 1 of practice?
Ohm (2:12 PM)
Mitch,Tom Coughlin singled out Rutgers WR Tim Brown. Brown is 5-8 but looks more like 5-6. He's a sparkplug. Rookie punter Matt Dodge boomed a few punts. Richmond cornerback Seth Williams was impressive as well.
How good do you think the Giants D will be compared to last year, with the new D coordinator?
Ohm (2:14 PM)
Joe,Good question. They certainly added a lot of depth but Perry Fewell will be a big key. Last season, the players didn't believe in DC Bill Sheridan. Mathias Kiwanuka told me a few weeks ago that the players love Fewell, who listens to players and suggestions and is very enthusiastic.During practice today, Fewell was running all over the field and his voice was heard above everyone else's. Very enthusiastic guy. That's a good sign for a defense that respected Spags so much.
do you think the giants have done enough this off-season to be a playoff contender, assuming full health?
Ohm (2:15 PM)
Jake,I think the Giants are a playoff team. I think the NFC East will come down to them and the Cowboys. The coaching staff is very good and the players on this team, many of them still left over from the Super Bowl year, are talented and have experience. With this new addition of youth and depth, the Giants should make a run for the playoffs provided they find a middle linebacker who won't get exposed.
Do you think Boley and Canty will have bounce-back years?
Ohm (2:16 PM)
Carl,I like Boley to have a bounce-back year. I just like his athleticism. Both he and Canty got to stay healthy. A healthy Canty will make a bigger difference than last year, right?
How do you think the Giants view the 'new' Jets? Do they like being under the radar? Are they annoyed?
Ohm (2:17 PM)
T,Kiwanuka told me that the Giants just need to win a Super Bowl and then all the talk will be back on the Giants. They recognize that the Jets are the sexier team and I am sure they aren't that happy about flying under the radar. But they know they got to win to get the attention back.
Ohm - You mentioned your Skins roots on DNL repeatedly! haha. How do you think the Skins will do this year with McNabb?
Ohm (2:19 PM)
Chris,Don't want to make this a Redskins chat but I will say that I think the Redskins will be better than before but my man McNabb, as much as I like him, doesn't seem to me to be the final piece of the puzzle. The Redskins need a lot more than McNabb to be a Super Bowl contender and with that being said, if the Redskins just get to the playoffs, that's not the goal right? The Redskins want to get back to Super Bowls and I don't see that happening just because McNabb is there. Shanahan will make them better but not SB contenders.
Tom Coughlin (NYC)
Ohm, I noticed you weren't on time for the chat today. Remember: If you're not 5 minutes early, you're late!
Ohm (2:19 PM)
TC,I will have to pay my fine. Too much going on today with the retirement presser of Jeff Feagles and meeting all the new rookies!
Do you think it would be at all possible for the Giants to switch to a 3- 4 defense? Tuck and Mathias could play DE/OLB and from guys like Alford to Coefield, I feel that it is a possible scenario
Ohm (2:20 PM)
CJ,Don't see that happening anytime soon. Kiwanuka says the team told him he will be a defensive end this year. He doesn't want to switch anymore.
Dave (Montclair, NJ)
Do you think DeShawn Wynn can impress the Giants enough to win a spot? Because if Jacobs and Bradshaw don't bounce back from a disappointing 2009, I'm going to start to really worry about the running backs.
Ohm (2:21 PM)
Dave,The Giants definitely are looking for some running back depth. Remember, just about all the running backs they have are coming off some sort of surgery or injury.
Rickey Henderson (Hall of Fame)
Rickey want to know what Ohm would do if Ohm won the lottery. Rickey would just take the check, frame it, and hang it on the wall.
Ohm (2:22 PM)
Rickey,Ohm bought Mega Millions last night. If Ohm wins, Ohm will be a very happy Thai man.
Ohm, let me first say you were my favorite analyst on Daily News Live. Always loved the female/club-oriented references in your analogies! Hows the new gig doing? Was it an honor that ESPN recognized your excellence at the News and wanted to bring you aboard?
Ohm (2:24 PM)
J, Thanks for the support homey. I miss DNL! And you know how I roll, always got to keep the audience plugged into the club scene in Manhattan! The new gig is going great - I hope my editors feel that way at least - and it is always an honor anytime anybody like ESPN or readers like you recognize anything I do. Thanks for the kind words!
Ohm (2:25 PM)
Ken from my hometown of DC! I do believe Jacobs will bounce back. I think he was hurt last year and with a healthy Bradshaw, I think the combination will be stronger than last year. If not, the Giants are in trouble. The offensive line needs to get better than last year and hopefully the running backs will be quicker and more powerful.
What do you make of Jacobs? think he'll bounce back? Overall what is your assessment of the running game?
What will the atmosphere in the Jets locker room be like with the new additions?
Ohm (2:26 PM)
Jeremy,I'll take this Jets question because I was around them a lot last year. I think the atmosphere will be similar - loose, fun, confident. Those guys love playing for Rex and they are full of personality. One thing to look for, though, will be the loss of Thomas Jones. He was a big-time leader and well-respected in that locker room.
Dave (Montclair, NJ)
To me, Jerry Reese is a horrible scout. He passed on great defensive ends such as Carlos Dunlap (Florida), Derrick Morgan (Georgia Tech), Ricky Sapp (Clemson), Everson Griffin (USC) and a few others. And the Giants need ends. Why did he do this? Jason Pierre Paul is just one guy- they need more!!!
Ohm (2:27 PM)
D,Well, I don't agree on Jerry being a horrible scout. After all, his history with draft has been pretty good. Morgan will be interesting though. He went right after JPP and the two will be compared for a long time. The Giants had JPP second on their list from what I heard after Rolando McClain. They love his potential and athleticism.
Who is the MLB on opening day?
Ohm (2:28 PM)
Man of Steel,That's the million dollar question. I have a feeling it is someone who is already on the roster like Goff or another veteran already here.
Why do people seem to think the Giants aren't as good as they were? The Eagles aren't without McNabb, Redskins improved but not ready to take the division, and Giants beat the Cowboys twice last year. As long as the pass rush returns and they get a decent player for MLB they should win the division.
Ohm (2:30 PM)
Pete,I agree with you. People are sleeping on the Giants because of last season's debacle and let's face it, they are kind of a boring team as far as headlines are concerned. They are not the Jets. And they didn't make a huge splash in free agency outside of Antrel Rolle. All the news has been about the Jets and the McNabb trade.I already posted about the Redskins and my feelings there. I think the Giants will bounce back this year if they don't suffer at middle linebacker.
What do you see for Ramses Barden this season? Considering the GMen have been having Red Zone problems for a while, seems like he could help.
Ohm (2:31 PM)
Rick,I'm feeling you with Barden. They need to see what they can get out of this guy. He is a huge target and if he is going to be a player, he has to make strides in camp this year and earn a spot on the field. Red Zone would be a great place to use him.
Ken (NY, NY)
Will the Giants make the playoffs this year?
Ohm (2:31 PM)
Ken,I'm predicting they will. Early stretch of the season will be big. Giants need to go at least 4-2 in my mind before they hit the hard part of their sked. The end of the sked is brutal.
I know this is a Giants chat, but how far do you think the Jets will go this year? Do you like their off-season moves?
Ohm (2:33 PM)
Mark,I like the moves the Jets made. I worry a bit about them over-tinkering. Replacing TJones with LT was a move that I didn't think they had to do. The Faneca decision I understand is about money. But that line was perhaps the best in the league last year and he was a leader. Say what you want about his performance on the field and whether he is in decline or what not. But they have tinkered a lot. I like the Santonio deal. It didn't cost them much at all for the risk really. Sanchez has to take a big step forth and become a leader and the franchise QB they think he is.
Dave (Montclair, NJ)
Can the Giants pull the shocker against the Colts in Manning Bowl II? What will they have to do?
Ohm (2:34 PM)
Dave,Don't see it happening. Not in Indy and not against Peyton. Perry Fewell will have to come up with a sensational plan and the pass rush will have to be outstanding.
Your thoughts on KP? Some have speculated that his recovery is not going that well (or his injury was worse than anticipated), hence the infusion of safety help (Rolle, Grant, Jones). What do you make of KP?
Ohm (2:35 PM)
Lance, KP has been providing us with very positive and glowing reports on his recovery. But let's just look at the Giants' decisions in the offseason. Antrel Rolle, Deon Grant and drafting Chad Jones at safety. Looks like the Giants are protecting themselves.
Dave (Montclair, NJ)
Pete, what are you talking about when you say "the pass rush returns?" No offense, but the Giants had NO pass rush last year. Did you mean that the guys need to improve? Other than that, though, I agree with what you say 100%. Ohm, your thoughts on this.
Ohm (2:36 PM)
Dave,Giants pass rush has to return to what it was two-to-three years ago. No doubt, this and the run game must come back in order for a Tom Coughlin team to be successful.
Is there a chance of Rolle coming out in the Wildcat next year... Giants rarely stray from the formal offensive strategy
Ohm (2:37 PM)
Mike,Don't envision TC utilizing a lot of wildcat. And with all the injuries that endured last year, probably best to keep Rolle on defense.
Patron (Staten Island)
Predict JPP's impact this year.
Ohm (2:38 PM)
Patron,I can see JPP coming in on a few downs in a rotation with Osi, Kiwi, Tuck and Tollefson. I don't think he'll be starting or anything. I would keep your expectations at a minimum. That way you are never disappointed. LOL.
In your opinion, what did the Giants do right this offseason and how do you think they could have done more?
Ohm (2:39 PM)
J,The Giants definitely added depth, versatility and athletes to the mix to push the veterans ahead of them. They gave Perry Fewell a lot of pieces to work with. But they didn't truly address their gaping hole at middle linebacker. And this could come back to haunt them.
Ohm (2:40 PM)
Alright everybody,Thanks for coming in to chat with me. Sorry I was a bit late. We got another practice coming up. I will be blogging soon and check out my feature on middle linebacker Phillip Dillard and some other stories today on Jeff Feagles' retirement and updates from rookie minicamp. And have an awesome weekend and enjoy the weather!
Ohm (2:40 PM)
You know what... I'll take two more questions...
Mikhail Prokhorov - your thoughts?
Ohm (2:42 PM)
Bill,You are referring to the New Jersey Nets' Russian owner in waiting? Being that I am a former Nets beat writer, I will say that this is very good for the Nets. Getting an owner who will spend on the team and want to improve the product and win is big. And this guy has got FAT pockets. Money seems to be no object with him from what I hear and the Nets need to get players and talent for that new arena in BK.
Which rookie do you see producing the most this season?
Ohm (2:43 PM)
J,I think it could come down to Linval Joseph, the defensive tackle, or OL Mitch Petrus. Dillard has a shot too depending on how the other linebackers do in camp. Alright guys, thanks again for chatting! Peace!
