Stephania Bell (3:01 PM)
Welcome to the Injury Chat...I am sloooowly getting back up to speed after winding down in Cabo for vacation...Not easy getting caught up in the world of injuries as apparently they (the injuries) have not taken any vacation...But that gives us plenty to talk about! So without further ado, we get to your excellent questions.
Francisco (Los Angeles )
Steph you think Jimmy Rollins calf problems are going to around all year. Should we trade him if so? Thanx
Stephania Bell (3:04 PM)
Francisco: I think you captured the essence of everyone's question - is this going to be something we see him dealing with all year? And here's the worst part...no definitive way to know. After all, the Phillies played it conservative. He did the slo, progressive rehab, even backing off when it started to bother him. As we always say with muscle strains, sometimes the only way to know if it's fully healed is to see how it responds in a full-speed competitive situation. Obviously since he re-injured it in less than a week, it wasn't quite ready, but no way they could have known that in advance. This appears to be a mild setback, not as severe as the first time, which is a plus. But until he can stay back running for more than 2 weeks, I would not feel safe saying it's behind him. Can he get past it? Yes. Will he? Questionable.
How do you see Furcal performing now that he's coming back for the rest of the year? Seemed like his rehab went about as well as it could have...
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Hoff: Good follow to the Rollins situation. Furcal also with a muscle strain (in his case the hamstring) but he has similar demands as Rollins at his position, etc. Furcal originally looked to be ready to go last week, but then he wasn't quite up to par so they held off, hoping to avoid just what happened with Rollins. The hope was that he would play in Chicago today but the team was not going to be sure until just before gametime. They believe he's ready - won't know for sure until he tests it in games...and lasts.
whats up with G sizemore? any word on a return date, or if the injury is related to his poor start...are we looking at something that has/will continue to bother him all year or will a DL stint give him a chance to come back 100%?
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Ken: Many questions about Sizemore but no definitive answers yet as he is in the process of seeking multiple opintions. I would say this - they have to be concerned about some cartilage injury given WHERE he is headed for those other opinions - Vail (where Dr. Steadman, pioneer of microfracture is) and New York (likely HSS where they have great expertise in cartilage procedures). Apparently he first did something to the knee in spring training, but then made it worse on an awkward play mid-May. If he doesn't have surgery, the timetable could be along the lines of multiple weeks (I'm thinking 4-6 and that's a guess), and he may not be "perfect" but still functional. If he does have surgery, well then, we have to wait and see what it is in order to project...
Mike (San Francisco, CA)
The one and only Miss Starphania Bell!! Welcome back. You were "sorely" missed (get it - haha). Is Brian Roberts coming back soon?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Mike: Ha! Love a little attempt at humor in the chat...and it's always nice to be missed...I don't know if I would say "soon" but despite everything that's happened to the poor guy (and let's face it, his luck has been pretty awful), I still think he's coming back (and I still have him on my DL in my league). He is now dealing with pneumonia BUT had been cleared to baseball activities just prior - so was making progress from the back. I think he has a long ways to go to get his conditioning back, but I think we could see him after All-Star break...if he doesn't have some major setback or other form of bad luck...
When do you think Brandon Webb makes his first start?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Rusty: At this point, I'm more likely to put a timetable on Carlos Beltran than Webb. While I am hopeful for Webb's sake that he can get back, he is now trying to work on a new arm slot...and is still not throwing from a mound. When he gets on a mound and can have several consistent outings with no setback, then we can start talking about a possible timetable.
how is miguel montero coming along? whats his timetable for return?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Hi Dan: Montero has been making some progress, taking BP and catching bullpens. It sounds as if he could be headed for a rehab assignment sometime next week and then if all goes well, perhaps within the first two weeks of June he could return.
Few Beckett questions: Has his back been the reason for his struggles all year? Will this injury linger all year? Do you think if he didn't wear that huge hippie hemp necklace there would be less strain on his back?
Stephania Bell (3:21 PM)
Ryan: Ha! It's worth exploring all theories as to the cause of someone's injury, but I seriously doubt that the necklace has anything to do with his back. Now if it was his neck...seriously though, this is not Beckett's first go-round with the back problems. Not sure I would say that he can blame all problems on that but he did complain of spasms early May then had the outing vs Yankees on a slick mound and left early. He's eligible to come back 6/3 but they will most certainly not push him, especially given his history. Back problems do tend to linger - and across seasons. The hope is that if they let this episode settle enough that it will not be a problem all year.
ck (portland, or)
Betran and Bedard? In the wake of the M's claiming that will shop Cliff Lee this summer if things don't turn around, is it still worth stashing Bedard knowing that he will most likely be a turd? Beltran? no news out there-whats the update on him? Thanks and love you!
Stephania Bell (3:26 PM)
ck: funny description of Bedard's value...not a term I will use, but it did make me laugh. In unsurprising news, Bedard suffered a setback with his shoulder last week and was set to be re-examined by team doctors this week. No word yet on the plan. But any setback is not good - and it likely means he won't meet an early June target (they in fact were hoping for late May after he was ahead of schedule for a while). While I will say that pitchers often suffer some type of setback when returning from surgery, I have to admit to more than expecting that Bedard would have trouble and now, so far, it appears true. Hmmm -for me, not worth holding onto but that is in the context of his entire history...
Ed (Charlotte, NC)
Speaking of Beltran, what is your weekly (or in this case fortnightly since you were gone last week) prognosis for him?
Stephania Bell (3:28 PM)
Ed: Yes, follow on Beltran. I know he started some light running -in his brace - and it was important in that he said it was the first time he had run without pain. There have been no significant updates since so we don't know how much or how hard he is running - but as soon as we hear, I will post it in my blog. And of course, we can resume weekly discussion in next week's chat...
De La Rosa? Any word. Read that he was playing long toss for 4 days straight a week or two ago. What is his status? Another month before a rehab assignment?
Stephania Bell (3:32 PM)
Ralph: That's the latest update I've got right now. These progressions usually go further distance long toss, then increased velocity from shorter distances (flat ground), bullpens, sim games/rehab...so you're talking another month or so most likely - b/c you have to include off days in there as well. The Rockies are not giving a timetable yet b/c there is still a lot of ground to recover, but that's how it would appear to me (add in the words "barring a setback").
Joe (Morris Plains, NJ)
Hi Steph - Cabo makes me think about the Joe Mauer baseball game commercial. Please tell me about Eric Young, Jr. Fracture? When should he be back? Recovery outlook? Does his injury impact stolen bases? If so, how?
Stephania Bell (3:36 PM)
Joe: Funny! - Young has a stress fracture in the middle of his tibia (the main lower leg bone (shin)) and now will be sidelined until it is no longer painful - which could be weeks. I actually have had this injury (3 stress fractures from running) and it is nasty pain, feels like the bone is bending. The timetable is generally several weeks depending on where the bone is in the healing process and then he needs to get his conditioning, speed back. Of course he can train in water or on bike, but not the same as running. As far as SB, the key is just getting his speed back up to par which could take a couple weeks even after he returns.
Do you think David Wright's concussion last year could be leading to his high strikeout rate this year? Maybe he's not seeing the ball as well or something like that? I don't know, you're the expert - help me out!
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Ryan: I really don't think so because there are extensive clearing tests that he had to pass a long time ago in order to return to play. Not concussion related.
Will the magic splint allow Ethier to return sooner rather than later?
Stephania Bell (3:40 PM)
Mike: It sure looks like sooner and according to Stan Conte, the splint has been an amazing help. Why? Because it allows the fractured part of the finger to be stabilized (the tip) but allows the healthy part of the finger to move. So instead of being completely immobilized for weeks, he's already been able to grip a bat and is taking BP. If he continues well and the bone heals, he could be back as early as next week!
Bret Anderson: another rehab start needed or ready for the show?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
James: That is the million dollar question and I've made inquiries but could not get an answer pre-chat. He did pitch the 3 innings in Sacramento Monday and there was a question as to whether he'd be back in the rotation Saturday or get another rehab start. It seems to me that he'd likely need another rehab start to go deeper into the game before rejoining the team after a flexor tendon strain, but at this point not clear which way the A's will go.
Is Mike Gonzalez close to returning with his rehab going forward?
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Chris: Although he seems to be making slow and steady progress, it's unclear whether he's really "close" to return. He's been transferred to the 60-day DL but is still eligible to come back 6/9. Before then he needs bullpens and a rehab assignment. As a reliever he certainly doesn't need as long, so it's reasonable to think if all goes well he could be back in this early to mid-June range.
Josh (Phoenix, AZ)
Stephania... are you boycotting my question? JA Happ appears to be making progress. Any word or timetable on a return?
Stephania Bell (3:50 PM)
Josh: Of course not. And just to prove it, I know you were asking earlier about Happ AND Anderson. Just trying to make the rounds...and here you are. As far as Happ, it sounds as if he's got some more bullpen sessions before getting into a rehab assignment. Also, he's not throwing all of his pitches yet so he will have to work his way back to his full repertoire. There is no official timetable for his return but given the things he still needs to do, it seems like mid-June earliest.
STARphania, follow up on the Ethier question...do you think with the finger injury he'll retain his power or will it sap it away (kind of like a wrist injury would)? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Eric: I think we'll get a pretty good idea quickly since it appears that he won't miss much time swinging the bat. They've made some adjustments to his bat to aid his grip and the team will watch and see how it looks when he hits. So far the word is that his mechanics appear normal and he's feeling good. Assuming the actual healing goes well, it doesn't seem as if loss of power will be an issue.
Hey Steph, Welcome back from vacation...lucky U :>) Any updates on B. Penny? How do you see him returning, any lingering effects to be wary of? He's been a pleasent suprise so far...will he be able to keep it up?
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Scott: Thank you - and yes, I am lucky to have been able to take such a nice vacation...but back to reality. Penny's injury as reported by our Buster Olney, was not considered serious - a Grade I lat strain -and while it was certainly enough for them to remove him from competition for a while to allow it to heal, it sounds as if he is not expected to miss more than the minimum. I go back to what we were saying at the top of the chat about muscle strains - they are very hard to predict with any precision. That said, so far this looks to be minor.
Is Carlos Gonzalez good to go tonight, or is his wrist still bothering him?
Stephania Bell (3:57 PM)
Chris: No report out of Denver yet...all we've heard is that the wrist was sore the other day.
Lisa FitzPatrick (Scottsdale AZ)
how long before Street is back?
Stephania Bell (4:00 PM)
Lisa: Just when it looked like he would be back from the shoulder, he added a groin injury into the mix. If in fact it is not serious (which is what was described), then he could be back on a throwing schedule that would have him back in the mix in early June.
Stephania Bell (4:02 PM)
That's all we have time for today - thanks for coming to the Tuesday chat. Appreciate your great questions - and it's fun to be back!See you here next Tuesday...
