Ohm (1:59 PM)
WUD UP! Thanks for stopping by the chat. Talked to TC today. He did the rounds individually with each beat writer. Talked some Kenny Phillips, Keith Bulluck, Osi and other stuff. Let's get cracking!
Why should we care about the ESPN NFL Preseason Power Ranking? Last year, ESPN had the Saints at 19 and two of the top three did not make the playoffs.
Ohm (2:01 PM)
Vinh! Wud up man? How's DC? Heard there was like a tornado the other day and power outage everywhere. Well, the ESPN power rankings is for you guys to debate as well. Remember with the NFL, it is very difficult to predict what happens. I am sure very few saw the Giants winning the Super Bowl in 2007 prior to the season starting. The Saints were a high-powered attack going in but they never really put it together until last year. Sometimes teams come together and are able to make a run. I predicted the Saints to make the Super Bowl.... the year before last year. So it came true a year late.
Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)
Dear OhmCould you see Jim Fassel coaching in the NCAA again?
Ohm (2:02 PM)
Chioke... a Jim Fassel question. Nice! I think Coach Fassel deserves another chance to be a head coach. I don't know if he wants to be a college coach and go through recruiting and all the nonsense with agents and what not. I think he rather coach in the pros. I know he wants to badly. Just needs a shot.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Your Favorite NFL Team is What?
Ohm (2:04 PM)
CF... I grew up a diehard Redskins fan. But since becoming a sports writer, a lot of the fan in me has died. You have to be objective when covering sports and since I have done mostly NBA and now NFL, I don't root for teams anymore in the NBA and NFL. Basically all I cheer for now is Michigan State football and basketball since I don't have to cover them as a beat.
Ohm, brother from another mother how is life??? I talked to your boy Rich yesterday and he said Mangold may get a contract next year...do you think he be bitter seeing that Brick got one this year?
Ohm (2:06 PM)
Wud up Jetfan82! How you been? Rich knows all. Stick with Cimini! That's my man. If he says he thinks Mangold is getting a deal next year, I'd trust it. I would be bitter too but I think when it comes to NFL contracts, it is always complicated and more than meets the eye. Remember, NFL players don't always see all the money in a deal. Cimini will tell you how the contracts are structured. I still think the Jets take care of Mangold in the future, even if it is next season.
Ohm, I've read the special teams preview and agree that Dodge is a player to watch. The guy's a beast! I can't wait to see him try to lay someone out on a return. I think he's an instant fan-favorite that hard-nosed Giants fan will embrace.
Ohm (2:07 PM)
JJ, Mr. Dodge is a big, big boy. He is really into weightlifting. He's not like completely ripped up but for a punter, he's shredded. LOL. He's got to get hangtime on his punts. He can boot them long but the Giants are all about hangtime and directional punting. But they cut Bond after the OTAs and minicamp so looks like it's Dodge's to lose in camp.
Vinnie (Columbus, OH)
Ohm's Law!!! I'm thinking Andre Brown could have been a huge boost to the RB corp had he not torn his achilles. Any word from the team on his changes of regaining his form and possibly being the guy to eventually step in for Jacobs (if Jacobs has indeed taken too many hits)? Thanks.
Ohm (2:09 PM)
Wud up Vinnie? I don't think we will see Andre take over for Brandon. Andre is fighting for the third running back spot with DJ Ware. But he has looked good. Giants continue to want to see him slowly make it back and he is doing just that after Achilles surgery. I think Brown could take that third spot and be a decent option out of the backfield. Bradshaw is the one I see stepping in for Jacobs if BJ struggles or gets hurt.
Simple question: Asomugha or Revis?
Ohm (2:11 PM)
Vinh, Revis... definitely. Never seen a dude completely take out the opposing top wide receiver as many times as Revis. Granted, Revis has a better team around him and better defense. Still, Revis is the man.
Larry (New Jersey)
what was it like to go to Michigan State?
Ohm (2:12 PM)
Larry, it was cool, different. I came from a really diverse area right outside Washington DC in Silver Spring, MD. And I am East Coast to the fullest. But I accomplished everything I wanted and more at Michigan State. Wanted to make the tennis team, ended up becoming the manager and traveling with the team and basically becoming almost like an assistant coach. Went to all the football and basketball games, made a ton of friends and MSU has an excellent J-program. Love that place!
SdotMosa (Long Island, NY)
Yoo Ohm, what's good? I have a question concerning our defensive line rotation. Now i know Reese loves stockpiling D-lineman, but when I look at our roster, it seems like while its always good to have a plethora of lineman for injuries and whatnot, but how on earth is everyone gonna receive playing time?We have Osi, Kiwi, Tuck & Pierre-Paul @ DE and Cofield, Alford Canty, Joesph
Ohm (2:14 PM)
SdotMosa, I'm good homey. Especially now that my air conditioning is running again after it broke down like it always does every summer. Sigh. Coughlin told me today that he will utilize a lot fo players based on situations. And I believe him. No matter who starts, Kiwi or Osi, I think the two will see plenty of snaps. And then I still think you will see some Alford and Joseph despite Canty and Cofield being starters. And I still think they will find a way to get JPP for a few snaps on the field.
Will the G-Men get any type on compensatory pick if chad jones career is over?
Ohm (2:15 PM)
Shakoor, not sure about that. Don't think so. But I think Chad Jones is going to, eventually, way down the road, try to play again. Whether it is baseball or football, remains to be seen. Gonna be a while before all that is figured out. He still has some more surgical procedures to undergo. He is now recuperating in New Orleans before he returns in 6-8 weeks to NYC for more surgery.
dude if you get a chance check out S. Holmes twitter pics hes got a pic of Teddy Pendergrass that at first glance looks like the owner of Revis Island!
Ohm (2:16 PM)
I did see that. Was it Braylon or Santonio that did that. Can't remember. But it was pretty funny. The Jets are a good group of guys who like to have fun. Going to miss that locker room a lot.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
Thoughts on the Bullock signing?
Ohm (2:18 PM)
SOS, I like the signing. It remains to be seen how his knee holds up but Bulluck is really motivated and I love the fact that he is experienced and a leader. He is emotional and will get fired up. They need those intangibles at the middle. They need experience. I think I feel better about Bulluck in the middle trying to match wits with Peyton Manning in week two.
what about patrick crayton getting released by the cowboys and the giants picking him up to sure up the return game?
Ohm (2:19 PM)
Francis, that's not a bad idea. One thing Crayton can do is return. As long as he doesn't want to be like the third or fourth receiver, though. The Giants need to get their young guys more experience, including Ramses Barden. And I think Crayton wants to play on offense.
Would Terrel Thomas make a better starting Corner than Ross at this point? Also, if Phillips can't go, wouldn't Thomas be better suited to shift to safety than ross? That was the talk when thomas was drafted...
Ohm (2:20 PM)
DP, I like TT a lot. He is emerging into a nice solid player. I still want to see what Ross has to offer. He was injured so much. Let's see what he can do when healthy. Any of those guys as the third corner is still great too. I rather see TT at corner than safety. They got Rolle and Grant to play safety.
Adam M (Westchester NY)
Hey who do u think the giants rookie of the year will be?
Ohm (2:21 PM)
Adam M, I think Linval Joseph may have the most impact of all the rookies. JPP might not see enough snaps. Dillard now is third string MLB likely. Jones is out. Dodge will get plenty of action but I am going with Joseph.
Do you see the Preseason game between the Giants and the Jets becoming a little more than just an exhibition? I know there is a lot of tension between these two teams right now.
Ohm (2:22 PM)
Mike, wud up? Well, I think it will definitely be hyped more than a preseason game and will feel more than that because of the circumstances. New stadium, the Jets are preseason favorites and HBO will be all over it. But after a quarter, the subs will be in and then it will feel like a preseason game. I don't know about tension from the Giants side. They probably get a bit agitated with talk of the Jets but also understand that they got to get back to winning again.
Scott (New Jersey)
Hey Ohm! First off, thanks for the great Giants coverage. I check ESPNNY everyday! My question is about the Giants' conerbacks. I think Terrell Thomas desrves a starting spot. He was really one of the bright spots of that miserable defense last year, but he went under a lot of people's radars. But I also think Aaron Ross deserves a spot too. The guy is one of the fastest in football, and he can definitely be a big playmaker. His absence is a big reason why that secondary was so bad. But you reported that Webster's starting role is sealed. I feel like he's aging and isn't quite as fast or effective as Thomas or Ross. Your thoughts? Thanks, Ohm, and keep up the good work!
Ohm (2:25 PM)
Scottie, thanks bro, that means a lot. Appreciate it. I think Webster definitely is locked in at one spot. The other is between TT and Ross. Ross has to stay healthy. I hear you about his speed. But he has got to stay healthy. Bottom line though, Webster and Ross have to have bounce-back seasons. Webster wasn't as great last season but with Perry Fewell, maybe he can show why the Giants invested in him.
are you and ralph still good friends?
Ohm (2:25 PM)
Frank, of course! Ralph and I were teammates for 12 years. Of course we are still friends. We sit next to each other in the Giants press room too.
if ross wins either kr/pr jobs, will that mean he'll be less likely to get the starter job over thomas
Ohm (2:26 PM)
Gary, I don't think it would matter. I think it will come down to whether Ross can beat out TT.
The Duke (The Dirty Jersey)
O-Dawg, how big of a signing do you think Bulluck is? I think its a smart signing, one year, only 2.5. How much are they expecting out of him?
Ohm (2:27 PM)
Duke! I think it is a great signing. No risk, you know? I think they expect him to start at MLB and bring some of those AP intangibles if his knee holds up and I think they are confident it will. TCough said he is an excellent piece of the puzzle. Coughlin is a big, big fan.
rap.about.com came out with a top 100 all time list songs top 3 are 3-The message, 2-rappers delight, 1-I used to love h.e.r. ok so your thought???
Ohm (2:28 PM)
My top three favorite hip-hop songs are different. But it would take me too long to figure out which three I want up there. I like too many to just have a top three. LOL!
Tom (Red Bank, NJ)
Huge year for Big Blue - Coming into training camp, what competitions are you looking forward to the most? Does Barden get more oppurtunity with Hixon going down? Does a younger MLB step up and challenge Bullock? I need your input Ohm!!!!
Ohm (2:30 PM)
Tommy! Pump the brakes homey! I'll give you my input. Camp doesn't even start till Sunday and you are amped. I really wanted to see Osi vs Kiwi but with the hip issue limited Osi to one a day practices, that competition may be somewhat limited. TT vs Ross will be good. Can't wait to see Bulluck in the middle. And want to see Barden and Beckum emerge into weapons. Also Andre Brown vs Ware at third RB. Is that good enough for you dawg? LOL.
aj (long island)
do you think pierre paul will have a good season
Ohm (2:31 PM)
AJ, depends on what a good season is... to me, a good season for him will be seeing a handful of snaps spelling the starters and maybe getting some sacks and showing promise and some of that raw ability. He has to learn the game this season and improve. Anything more than that to me is successful. I have low expectations simply because he is a rookie and is playing at a very deep position. He has time on his side.
Rich (New York)
So the Giants are replacing an injured, aging inside linebacker (AP) with an injured, aging outside linebacker being put in the ILB role? As much as I like Bulluck, do you think he's going to bring stability to the middle linebacker position? Or could the Giants still look at young guys like Goff, Blackburn, and Dillard?
Ohm (2:33 PM)
Rich, I feel you on what you are saying. Kind of like AP, Bulluck isn't exactly the most athletic middle linebacker. I mean, he's no freak like Patrick Willis running all over the field. But Bulluck is smart, makes plays, experienced and will bring leadership. And if Goff or Dillard struggled early on, the Giants season could get off to a really bad start. So you got to like the Bulluck signing. Coughlin says it's still an open competition though at MLB. I think its Bulluck's job unless his knee is not fully recovered.
Ohm! Whats up man... say something nice about the Bills for this season
Ohm (2:34 PM)
Ryan, you testing me kid. Here you go - C.J. Spiller.
Scott (Long Valley, NJ)
Hey Ohm! How do you think Matt Dodge will fare as the new punter? He's got big shoes to fill with Jeff Feagles' retirement, but I hear Dodge was a really good punter at ECU. Do you think he'll perform well in the new role? It's got to be tough for any punter to do his job when it gets windy in the Meadowlands. Thanks for your time, Ohm!
Ohm (2:36 PM)
Scottie, better hope Feagles teaches Dodge well in camp. Dodge has to get more hangtime and get better at directing his punts. He can boom them all he wants but he has to have strategy behind his punts, direct them, help the special teams cover. It is all about field positioning for the Giants. But the punter is strong and it will be cool watching him in camp to see what he can do. But remember, he's a rookie. And you just lost one of the greatest punters of all time. It will be an adjustment.
WAssup big Ohm!! What do you make of the Osi injury? I have a feeling were going to have a very unhappy Osi playing on 3rd down and Kiwi being the starter.
Ohm (2:38 PM)
Mitch, what's going on? I just left LA. It was cold there. Miss it though. You may be right. I asked Coughlin how his hip injury and him practicing once a day is going to impact the competition with Kiwi. The story should up shortly on ESPN New York if it isn't already. Coughlin said there will be plenty of football to go around for everybody and he talked about situational defense. Osi has the odds stacked up against him with the hip thing. But I think whoever doesn't win the job will still see plenty of snaps. Osi will just have to deal with not starting if he doesn't win the job in camp.
Kyle (GIANTS FAN IN PHILLY)
Sup Ohm? Do you see Nicks developing into a premiere wide receiver this year after his breakout season rookie season? Clearly has the big play potential. Is 1200 yards and 10+ TDs a realistic goal for Hakeem this season? Also how do you see rest of the WR-corp shaping out going into season?
Ohm (2:40 PM)
Kyle, Giants fan in Philly is a dangerous living man. Premier wide receiver? Not willing to go that far yet. I do think he can be a game-breaker, play-maker. Like that? Should be a rap. He is explosive, great YAC guy. I think if he's healthy, remember he had a toe issue and had surgery in offseason, he can be that deep gy and big play guy for the Giants. 1200 yards... probably too much. Remember, Smitty is still there. 10 Tds... you got to factor in Manningham, who got a lot of looks in the end zone too. Probably not 10 tds. Manningham is apparently faster than he was last year. And Barden has been impressive at times but has to stay consistent to get on field. Smitty is Smitty. Solid.
NIK POWELL (BRANFORD, CT)
OHM, what's good brother? With the issues we have had with injuries in our secondary, do you think it is a good idea for Ross to be returning punts? If he were to go down our depth would take a hit at CB.
Ohm (2:41 PM)
N-Pow. Wud up? I rather see Sinorice back there to be honest. I'm with you... let's just let Ross get healthy and focus on being a DB and staying on the field. I mean, unless Ross turns out to be a Devin Hester-type, keep him back in the secondary. And I don't think Ross is a Devin Hester-type.
Ohm, Should we be alarmed KP won't be ready to go even one-a-day early on in camp? Word all along was he was going to be ready for the start or training camp.
Ohm (2:43 PM)
Mikey, Coughlin said no setbacks. Just being safe and cautious and taking everything slow. I think you had to expect that KP was going to be brought along slowly. Be alarmed if he is not ready come season opener to play at all. KP was always being super optimistic. If KP isn't practicing by third week of camp, I'd be a little alarmed. But you want the guy to take it slow and make sure he is OK.
Ohm (2:44 PM)
Here's the link to the Kenny Phillips story and Coughlin's chat with me and what he had to say about other injuries on the team. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5420403
Ohm, you think big blue can make it as a wild card team this season?
Ohm (2:45 PM)
BB89, yes, I do think they can make it. Things have to break right. They got to win the games they should win. That means they have to take care of business, no slip ups. And they must stay healthy. Still got them as the second best team in the East behind Cowboys.
Mateen Cleaves Youngmisuk (East Lansing)
Am I really going to be the name of your first born kid?
Ohm (2:46 PM)
Actually, it's Plaxico Mateen Youngmisuk. Shh, don't tell my girl that though. She's not ready for that yet. LOL.
Ohm my main man.... wuts good? I have to say that even if Bulluck isn't 100% for the start of the season, just having a proven veteran there who can kind of be a player/coach for the young LB's make me feel better about the LB situation.... your thoughts? Thanks.
Ohm (2:47 PM)
J, I have probably answered this already. But wanted to give your question a shout out. My answer to your thoughts: WORD.
Did you see R.A. Dickey's performance this afternoon? Wow!
Ohm (2:48 PM)
Ryan, been writing the Giants story and then dealing with AC issues all day. Didn't catch it, what he do? Hopefully better than Johan was last night for my fantasy squad!
Ohm, love the blog you do one hell of a job. All I keep hearing about JPP is that he is not going to be able to contribute this season and he may be a first round bust. What gives? I thought he was a BEAST?
Ohm (2:49 PM)
Mikey, thanks dog. I am not going to label him a bust if he doesn't play much this year. He has Tuck, Osi and Kiwi ahead of him. Even if he plays sparingly next season but shows some flashes, I'd be cool with that if Kiwi and Osi are back. He has to learn the game and still bide his time. He could be a beast. Just might not see it until Year 2 or 3.
ben (long island)
with smith nicks manningham and barden could the giants finally let eli air it out like his older brother
Ohm (2:50 PM)
Bennie, I don't think they are going to turn into the Saints. Although Kevin Gilbride did want Eli to watch what Drew Brees did last season with the Saints. But Giants still need to establish the run. It's a formula for success for the Giants. Eli has gotten better and he is entering his prime. Just don't see an air-it-out attack just yet.
Kenny Phillips' knee (NJ)
What's up Ohm. Feeling good and ready for training camp. I'm disappointed that they are holding me out from practice initially, but I suppose it's for my own good. Are you ready for Albany?
Ohm (2:51 PM)
KP... I wish I could do one-a-days too... after the first few days in that heat and two-a-days, they might need to put me on the PUP list.
Matty boy (Zoo York)
Ohm, i know your guess is probably is good as mine. But what can we expect from Kenny Phillips if the giants take their time with him. Even playing sparingly for the first couple weeks or two. Do you think we can expect a top safety tandem in the NFL this year??
Ohm (2:53 PM)
Matty, my guess, and it's a guess, is that by middle or end of season, Phillips is on field, still healthy and getting himself back into playing shape. Going to take him a while. Best safety tandem may wait till next year because it's going to take time for KP to come back and then once on field, it's going to take several games, my guess, to get back into shape and playing again and gain confidence in that knee.
Ryan (Germantown, MD)
What's up Ohm? Why didn't Osi get the surgery on his hip done in the offseason? Did he just not know he needed it?
Ohm (2:55 PM)
He knew about it but was told he can manage it and play on it without injuring it. He wanted a second opinion to see if he can go through it without injuriing it and was told so. He wants to get through the season and then have surgery after the season. If there is a work-stoppage, he can definitely have it then. I don't think he is in an intense amount of pain that he must have the surgery. But he will likely have to have the surgery eventually. If he had it in the offseason, who knows how good he would be coming back and Kiwi would definitely be the starter.
You think Bradshaw will taking over the starting RB job this year? Or is Jacob gonna stop acting like he's 5'9" and can run laterally?
Ohm (2:56 PM)
Max, wow, ragging on Jacobs. LOL. Well, I think the playcalling should be a little better and more suited to Jacobs as well. Jacobs says he is healthy and he has to be better than last year. The offensive line has to be better. If not, if Jacobs gets off to slow start or gets hurt, I can see Bradshaw stealing carries. But Bradshaw hsa to be healthy too after coming off surgery on his feet and ankle.
Patrick (Spring valley ny)
whats going on with the contracts of Steve Smith and Paul Pierre, also how do u think brandon jacobs health is at this point ?
Ohm (2:58 PM)
Patrick, Smith wants an extension. Likely not going to get it but his agent has talked to Giants. Smith knows he probably won't get it anytime soon. JPP hasn't signed yet. My expectation is it happens before camp on Sunday but you never know. Jacobs says he is full-go.
ben (long island)
i think not enough people are talking about the rolle/phillips combo...it will help the front 4 whoch is already loaded
Ohm (2:58 PM)
B, let's get KP healthy first. Could take a while and must take it slow.
What are your thoughts on the Giants giving Brian Westbrook a shot to be our KR/PR and maybe 3rd down back??????
Ohm (3:00 PM)
Jeremy, I don't see it happening although it's not a bad idea. Westbrook's knees must be in bad shape. Gotta see how that is doing first. If Westbrook returns punts though, or kickoffs, that would put him in further risk of getting hurt.
Mateen Cleaves (East Lansing)
What's your take on PSL's? I think they're an insult to the fans
Ohm (3:01 PM)
I don't know how ya'll afford going to games anymore. Heck, how does anyone afford eating at a game anymore?
Take my question (THIS CHAT)
How do you think Eli would do running a no-huddle offense like his brother..... to me Eli has been one of the best QB's in the 2 minute drill since he became a starter.... your thoughts OHM the almighty...lol
Ohm (3:02 PM)
Eli is pretty sharp in the hurry-up. I definitely give you that. I just think the Giants need a balanced attack with a running game. But I do think mixing up is never bad either, let Eli do some hurry-up. I feel confident with him doing that. He has the receiving weapons. Nicks needs to emerge into game-breaking type WR, that would help too.
Ohm...when are you gona come stink it up in Fartville with ya boy??
Ohm (3:02 PM)
Send me the directions Mikey.
Collin (Giants fan in St.Louis)
Do the Giant have any shot at winning their stacked division?
Ohm (3:03 PM)
They got a shot, but I got them second. Eagles a close third. Got Boys in first.
Herm Edwards (ESPN)
Ohm, have you seen "Press Hop 2"? Be a man. Put your name on it.
Ohm (3:03 PM)
Coach, haven't seen it. Got to check it out, from what I hear.
Brett Favre (via mobile)
Favre's ankle > Phillips' knee
Ohm (3:04 PM)
#4, I got Phillips' knee.
I'm confused - where is Mike from? Fartville? I just googled that and I don't see it on the map
Ohm (3:04 PM)
I'm guessing we got to use our noses.
Allen Iverson (via mobile)
Is Kenny Phillips' knee talkin' 'bout practice man?
Ohm (3:05 PM)
Practice man. We talking BOUT PRACTICE!
Am I the only one who thinks Mark Sanchez is in for a long year?
Ohm (3:06 PM)
B, here's like the second story I wrote at ESPN in April... what do you think? http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/columns/story?id=5078782
Give us your July 29th super bowl prediction.... I've got the Ravens over the Cowboys
Ohm (3:07 PM)
Pack vs Jets. I don't know, haven't thought about it too hard, but since you are pressing me, I'll go with my boys in Green and White even though I also wouldn't be shocked if they falter with such a tough schedule.
Magic Izzo Youngmisok (not born yet)
I think I'd rather have this name instead.
Ohm (3:08 PM)
I LIKE IT!
Ohm to be fair, anyone who read the OTL post about food violations at stadiums probably doesn't want to eat there anyway!
Ohm (3:08 PM)
I still need to see that. Heard it is not for the weak of stomach!
Ohm (3:13 PM)
Sorry guys, I lost signal there. My bad
How long are you going to be in Albany for? Stop by Graney's on New Scotland, I'll buy you a beer
Ohm (3:14 PM)
RJ, you are on. If I have time to breathe, I will be there.
Ohm (3:14 PM)
Alright guys, I am going to end the chat now. Been over an hour. I will try to answer some of these leftover questions - and all good ones - in a blog entry soon. Check out the blog ok. Camp preview advance will be in tomorrow as well so look for it and there's a KP story and a Strahan story on the website right now. Thanks guys!!!!
