Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Wow - first week of the NFL is here! Very excited about that. Naturally there are injuries to discuss...so what's on your mind?
Adam (The Garden of Eden)
Do you see Fred Jackson's injury keeping him out of week one or putting him at risk during the season?
Stephania Bell (3:05 PM)
Adam: Interesting location...Also, an interesting question. Jackson has been practicing and Chan Gailey says he looks really good. Sounds like there's a chance he plays - but I would expect it to be limited as his hand is still wrapped. But once the fracture heals and he can go without a cast this should not limit him going forward.
Should I expect another early ending for Ronnie Browns season or can I honestly expect him to be my #2 back for all 15 games?
Stephania Bell (3:08 PM)
Dan: Really wish I was clairvoyant...but since I do not possess that magic power, I can just tell you that he looked GREAT at camp and the foot issue seems as if it is not an issue after all. He is certainly coming into the season strong - and this is not the type of injury that is likely to recur (like a hamstring). Now if someone lands awkwardly on him again (which is how this happened), then all bets are off..
John (Park City)
It is no surprise Favre just keeps coming back every year. And now, he has a few nicks and bruises again. What about that ankle? Do you see him being able to endure his final supposed year of NFL play, and what do you think his year will be like?
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Well John, I should find out soon since I'm on my way to New Orleans to see him play in person. I will say that this ankle problem is quite different than the biceps thing from last year. The ankle issue is chronic and he has degenerative changes in the joint (i.e. arhtritis). That ankle won't be perfect - while it's better after surgery, it's bound to still give him trouble (and already has). It really becomes a question of how effective he can be from week to week - and the key is protection and him being able to avoid a lot of leg tackles. I have said this might be the year the streak ends, not wishing it by any means, but age does have a way of catching up in this game.
Any recent news on Knowson Moreno? Will he play week 1?
Stephania Bell (3:13 PM)
Robb: He's back in practice...but since we won't have seen him play at all in competition, it's hard to gauge. The expectation is that he will be ready to go in Week 1, but we won't get injury reports until later in the week. The bigger concern really is whether the hamstring will have healed enough to not be a re-injury problem. It will make me a little nervous for the first few weeks of the season.
Jim (Covina, CA)
Colston - Bruised Kidney? Ouch! Do I care about this for week 1 or do I roll with Marques anyway?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Jim: Ouch is right. But the good sign is that he was back in practice Monday. The team naturally is limiting what he's doing, but he would not be cleared to practice if there was concern about bleeding. He is expected to be fine for Thursday (but watch for any late downgrades!)
Taylor (San Francisco)
I took Larry Fitzgerald with an early 2nd round pick. He's got a favorable week 1 matchup with the Rams. What's his status?
Stephania Bell (3:18 PM)
Taylor: Sounds like he's good to go. One of the things the Cardinals decided early on after his injury (MCL sprain) was that they were not going to expose him to any more risk in the preseason - so we haven't gotten to see him. But he is expected to play - now we'll see how he fares with his new QB.
Rick (Providence, RI)
Drafted S. Rice on the cheap, any chance of him coming back before week 7?
Stephania Bell (3:19 PM)
Rick: Nope. He's on the PUP list so that's 6 weeks right there...we'll be keeping an eye out as to how his rehab is going too
Gregg (Anchorage, AK)
I'll ask the big question, how healthy is MJD really? Will he be 100% for Sunday's game or do you think there is a chance they will limit his touches?
Stephania Bell (3:23 PM)
Gregg: That is the big question, or question mark, if you will. I don't like evaluating things I know nothing about...and that's essentially where we are with MJD. First a report of a scope (agent says false, del Rio confirms false) BUT MJD held out of practice b/c of knee. Hmmm. Bad enough to not only skip competition but all practice, but not a worry to start the season? Maybe the down time helped ease any pain, swelling, etc (of course we don't know what he was experiencing but these would be reasons to rest), but what happens when he returns to the field? Is there something going on with the knee that could easily become aggravated and cause him to miss time? Since no information has been given, those questions are unanswered, but I don't like risk so I've stayed away. For his part, he says he's fine, and for all we know he could go on to play in all 16 games and be phenomenal. But he could play in one and never be the same. Fantasy gamble.
Stephania, great job as always on the pod-cast! I was not sold on Wes Welker's response to Berry's question about the status of his knee...what is your honest opinion on his health status? Do you think he should be used as trade bait VS. hoping he stays healthy all year?
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Tom: Thank you! Allow me to take the opportunity to plug the podcast here and note that we were, indeed, joined by the Patriots' Wes Welker.I actually believe he has been pretty forthright about how he feels with his knee. It certainly is coming along; we can see that just by the increased activity he's had from week to week. But the confidence in it is harder to measure and often slower to come. I don't think there's any reason at this point to suspect that he will have a problem. I just think they may gradually increase his workload to help make sure that he doesn't. So fantasy owners should temper expectations in the first few weeks and see how he's progressing.
lawrence albany ny [via mobile]
I have michael bush and fred jackson in one league.any word on if either will be back week 1 and if so how effective will they be?
Stephania Bell (3:30 PM)
Hi lawrence: Already touched on Jackson. As far as Bush, while it's normally a 6 week return to activity with this injury, this is also the NFL AND the medical staffs have become very adept at protecting thumbs, fingers, etc so that a player can return before full healing has taken place. No doubt they will want to ensure that the thumb looks good enough to risk the contact, but if he's wearing a padded splint, that might be enough to make them comfortable. The other key is how well can he function with any protective gear. He's been back in practice, apparently doing most drills Monday, which is impressive at just 2 weeks. While no lock for Week One, he sure makes it seem like it won't be 6 weeks either.
Josh Hamilton... perfect timing to go down as soon as the playoffs started. Any shot he's back by next week if I can somehow win this week?
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Ryan: Switching to baseball for a moment...yes, that darned outfield wall...just like last year. I think there's a shot he's back, but this is a day-to-day injury which all depends on how he feels. He certainly made it seem like this year's bruised rib injury is worse than last and he missed over a week then. I would make plans as if it's a two week absence.
Eve 6 (San Jose, CA)
Do you think Carolina Steve Smith will have any limitations for week 1?
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Eve 6: Nope. He felt good immediately when he returned to workouts in camp and he'll be wearing a protective device on the forearm to help protect it against hard contact. Now if he falls exactly the same way - there's nothing to say that it's impossible to re-injure it, but the bone has fully healed, it's well stabilized - and I would call it low risk.
Chaz (Scranton, PA)
Stephania, what's going on with J. Stewart? Will he be ready to go on Sunday? Will his injury bother him all season? Thanks.
Stephania Bell (3:38 PM)
Chaz: Well, the idea of doing the surgery in the first place was to try to ensure that it doesn't bother him all year like it did last year. But part of making that successful is making sure not to bring him back too fast. His body has healed from the procedure, now it's been a matter of him working his way back to be ready for the workload of the season. He says he is and I believe him.
Ryan (Boston )
Do I need to worry about Favre's ankle? Stick with him over Kolb? Thanks and go Niners!!
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Ryan: I know we discusse dFavre in this chat already but since you have him over Kolb AND you threw love to the Niners, thought I would post. I'm not sure I play him over Kolb...yet. The receiver corps in Minnesota is a little iffy (Berrian at the top but hasn't had the most stellar preseason). And Favre really hasn't worked a ton with the team yet this year. And I'm not sure how mobile he's going to be to be the playmaker we're accustomed to. I like Kolb's prospects and I might go that route Week 1. See how things shake out. And of course, go Niners!!
How safe is it to start Addai week 1?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Jay: I suppose as safe as it ever is with him. He's expected to play - wouldn't be cleared to return if they didn't think it appropriate. But Addai often makes early exits from games, gets banged up a lot. So as to how safe he is as a general question, not too sure...
Any O-line injuries you watching that might have a fantasy impact?
Stephania Bell (3:45 PM)
Ryan: Okung in Seattle makes me a little nervous. Matt Hasselbeck might be a little nervous too. After all, the Seahawks brought him there for a reason. He's expected to miss up to a month with the sprained ankle and it could affect Hasselbeck's comfort in the pocket.
Please Please Please answer my question about Beanie Wells!!!!!
Stephania Bell (3:48 PM)
Alex: OK! OK! But unfortunately there aren't a ton of specifics. Wells made it seem like no big deal and could have gone back into the game in which he got hurt. Whisenhunt said Monday that Wells was not 100% but it's hard to know just what that means. Doesn't sound like he'll miss any time, we know they're calling it a knee injury, but again, not a ton of specifics. Remember, Wells has a history of leg (ankle/foot) issues and as a physical back, he's likely to get more.
Riaz (Berea, OH)
Stephania: Do you think Owen Daniels is good to go for week 1? I am debating whether to roll the dice or go with Kellen Winslow. Thanks!
Stephania Bell (3:51 PM)
Riaz: I think he'll play, I think it will be controlled. He's coming off an ACL reconstruction and keep in mind, he just came off the PUP list recently. Kubiak has already indicated that he should get about 15-20 snaps (he won't be a target on every play) and that number could change (not likely upward) depending how he feels in the game. Positive signs on his progress in general, but expect a slow start.
is justin upton going to be shut down for the rest of the year?
Has there been any update on why Garcon missed practice. I read undisclosed injury.
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Ian: I don't think they're prepared to shut him down as they considered pinch hitting him. That said, inflammation or irritation in the shoulder (which is what I keep hearing) can be fickle. If he doesn't feel right, they won't play him. And given their team status, there's no reason to push him. You will be in a waiting game if you're hoping for him for fantasy playoffs and it might be better to look elsewhere.
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Oops - Cliff's question got posted out of order. Yes, Garcon's injury is officially undisclosed and until first injury reports are out (tomorrow), I think it will remain that way. This is puzzling since he missed over a week of practice and a couple games with an "undisclosed" injury, but then looked pretty darn good in the last preseason game. now this. Is it new? Not likely, have to believe something was aggravated and they're trying to make sure he gets some rest before the season opens. But the Colts don't give much away and until they have to report it, I don't think we're going to get much more.
Robert (Albany, NY)
Are Ahmad Bradshaw's surgically repaired feet completely fine, and will he be as explosive as he has been in the past? Is there any chance he'll re-injure them during the season???
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
Robert: Bradshaw is well past the healing point so risk of re-injury with that kind of thing is low. It was always a question for me as to how well he would do post-surgery and how would he look running. so far, he's been impressive showing great quickness and agility and pretty much cementing himself as the starter. I think he's in a better spot than last year for sure.
jeff (Canandaigua, NY)
Jose Reyes????? And what is this Matt Latos "illness?"
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Jeff: Reyes is taking BP, saying he's feeling better and it looks like he could be back this week. Latos had a stomach ailment and was already feeling better by late Monday. Expected to go today instead.
Mike (Madison, WI)
Is Meachem at full strength? Do you expect his injury to impact his play?
Stephania Bell (4:07 PM)
Mike: Why not end with a Saints player since they're up first this week? He had toe surgery in the offseason but is still dealing with lingering soreness (not unusual, remember Gates). He's had some nice moments in the last 2 preseason games, but it would be a concern if he aggravated it. He's playing with a support in his shoe which should help but it's not likely to be perfect all the time. So far I can't see blaming the toe as Brees will continue to spread the ball around but it's something to keep an eye on because if it starts to become painful it could limit his production.
Stephania Bell (4:08 PM)
Thank you EVERYONE for the great questions - the hour flies by...I am getting on a plane to New Orleans shortly - can't wait for the season to get underway. Good LUCK to everyone in their fantasy teams...and stay healthy!!
