Jesse Rogers (1:02 PM)
Afternoon everyone. Welcome to our weekly Hawks chat. Im at the United Center where the Hawks just finished practice. The Canucks are not practicing. Their coach is over at their hotel meeting the media in a few minutes to announce the goaltender...Hawks on a little roll but no one wants to be down in the third period..it does make for some exciting finishes...Lets get to some questions
ryan miller (meridian, idaho)
Why do the Hawks keep sticking with John Scott (in either position), but choose to send Nick Leddy, who was playing quite well, down to Rockford? Seems like Scott is too slow to be very effective. He cost them the game against Detroit when he fell down at the blue line and hasn't seemed to be a very physical presence on the ice.
Jesse Rogers (1:05 PM)
As far as Leddy goes, once Boynton kind of passed him up as Hammer's partner, I think they fig the minors was better for development. PLay big minutes and in all situations...Basically better to be a number 1 there than a 5 or 6 here..Its not about if he's better than Scott, though if they have enough probs with the bottom end d-men he might be back soon...As for Scott, hes a big man, you cant expect him to skate like Kane..as his prescence has been a factor, in my opinion...no one is taking runs at Hawk stars, right? But things will change once Soup gets back..they will re-assess their D but of course I hear what you are saying...He needs to be more effective on the ice...no doubt
Jesse, thanks for taking the questions. I have been a Hawks fan for years now, and really enjoyed watching the team last year, especially the D-Men. My question for you is what is going on with Brent Seabrook, I am a season ticket holder and every game I have seen so far it just looks as if he is lost out there, turnovers, not playing physical, and last game against the Blues just flat out lost on the 2 on 1 play where he "kind" of went to slide to block a pass or shot and just got flat out beat. Thanks again Jesse!
Jesse Rogers (1:07 PM)
I think he's been ok...I will say that I now he wants to contribute more on offense (afterall, it is a ocntract yr!) so that changes a guys mindset a little...i think hes still working out his game for THIS year..lets give it a little more time
Mike Wons (Chi)
How much of an Impact do you think Skille and Stalberg will have on this season?
Jesse Rogers (1:09 PM)
A decent one..they give other teams some matchup problems with their speed...if/when they play a team with a real gritty fourth line than maybe it swings the other way but just the fact that they have to give the other coach a little pause as a matchup means they are contributing...I dont see many problems in the Hawks end when they are out there...they have been a pleasant surprise..not spectacular (though stalberg's goals was pretty good)
We are seeing a lot of good things out of Hossa, Sharp, Turco. Two questions: (1) What do you think causes Toews to get off to slow starts (goal scoring-wise), and (2) to what do you attribute the high shot totals against?
Jesse Rogers (1:11 PM)
I have no idea about Toews "slow" starts...hes playing well just not getting a ton on the scoresheet...7 games...not a big deal..shot totals against is definitely a result of the turnover on this team...team defense/on ice chemistry is a work in progress HOWEVER, this also has to do with a defense that is a LITTLE overated in my opinion...they started this trend last year in the playoffs and its carried over...no campbell hurts the whole puck posession game as well and that keeps shot totals lower so a combo of things
Anyone else get the same vibe from Monday's improbable comeback that they did from last season's Calgary comeback?Jesse have you posed this question to any of the players?
Jesse Rogers (1:13 PM)
Yes, actually talked to troy brouwer today about it. He said a win like that makes them feel--just like last yr--they can win any game and it starts to give them that swagger that they had...but they all recoginze getting down in the third is not the way to go
More likely to keep it up: Hossa or Sharpie?
Jesse Rogers (1:15 PM)
I would say Hossa for two reasons..he started day 1 in training camp like this so hes been playing like this for a while now and with sharp pplaying center, I think over time the prime scoring chances arent there as much as they would be if he was wing..they are right now...now, if Hossa gets banged up which he has a tendency to do cause his style, that could slow him down
Do you think the very busy early-season schedule has been a good thing or a bad thing for the Blackhawks? I can see both sides to this argument, so I wonder if you come down on a particular side.
Jesse Rogers (1:18 PM)
Defintiely bad...As Ive said in the past, I think the schedule plays a big part in the big picture for a team...the saying in baseball is everyone wins and loses 60..its the other 42 that matter...hockey should have a similiar saying...and those "other" games sometimes come down to when/where you play, etc. This acutally has been brutal..every other night since they started PLUS one back to back so far...plus back and forth (until these last couple days) home and road...no time to settlee in, no time for team chemistry, no time to really recover for that extra day AND no practice time...they;ve had one off-day practice until yesterday...practice is big early on...
Can we expect Kopecky to continue his level of play or is it pretty much all thanks to Hossa?
Jesse Rogers (1:20 PM)
Well if Kopecky keeps standing in front of the net, no reason why it cant continue but yes, if Hossa isnt finishing than Kopy isnt rcking up the points...I did a video with kane, should be up on website soon and he said something interesting about him. Hes a little different than most that stand in front of the net...hes not looking for tip in goals, just to screen, and keep plays alive..thats why you see the high asst total but only 1 goal...so again, that style is tied to other finishing what he's kept alive
Viktor Stalberg (Press box)
Why am I a healthy scratch against the Blues instead of John Scott?
Jesse Rogers (1:21 PM)
Q said he wanted a big body in there bascially cause we all know how the blues play. youre back in there tonight!
Steve (St. Louis)
Do the Hawks have their own private team airplane or do they fly commercial?
Jesse Rogers (1:23 PM)
neither..they charter a plane each time they travel..its so convenient, you would be way jealous...seperate building by long term parking, right onto the plane and i think there is a runway just for charters or special flights, etc. they got it made!
Why aren't the Hawks rated higher in power rankings? I know there not official and basically meaningless, but come on!
Jesse Rogers (1:24 PM)
Take that up with my colleagues at espn.com I think they simply look at the record and play on ice right now...not necessarily what will happen..this early, its kind of just for fun
How much has Twitter changed the press box? What % of the reporters you see are tweeting during games?
Jesse Rogers (1:25 PM)
Good question...Most are tweeting..The traditional outlets I think less than someone like me or other online only places...its not a big deal but it has changed how games are covered a little but
Alex (Mobie, AL)
Looking at the Hawks schedule do you see a make it or break it stretch? When do you think we'll know if this team will be as good as last year?
Jesse Rogers (1:27 PM)
The typical feeling is if they can get a road winning streak it tells you a lot about a team...last yr, I felt that san jose drubbing (7-2)around thanksgiving and that road trip in general solidified what I needed to know...this yr could be similiar I suppose..I cant point to any one strecth but thats obviously the first big road test...
Wondering why Brouwer and Kopecki haven't found their scoring touch yet, what is going on with them any ideas
Jesse Rogers (1:28 PM)
Kind of told you about Kopecky..plus he doesnt have the best scoring touch in the first place..what he's doing is what he does best...get in the scrums and keep plays alive so he is getting pts..I mean hes on an 82 assist pace! Brouwer is a diff story...I think it will come..needs that time with the top 6 forwards and hes getting it...I know hes pressing a little but give it a little more time
Steve G (Northbrook)
Jesse... I know Hossa's buddy is Kopecky, but there's no way Kop is a first line winger. The guy has rock hands and couldn't keep a puck in a pail. Don't you think it's about time Brower gets a shot up on that line since he can finish and put together a couple passes down the ice? Lastly, is it just me or does Turco look pretty uncomfortable in the pipes for the Hawks? This is starting to shape up like last season where Huet and Niemi were competing for ice time. I thought Turco was a better tender then this.
Jesse Rogers (1:31 PM)
On the surface I agree with you about Kopy. He's probably left a bunch of points on the ice...but again for what they want him to do..open space for hossa and screen the tender, hes doing it. I would ride him with hossa till something changes...Brouwer is with kane and sharp now so he has plenty of skilled support...thought he played well last game...Turco up and down like a lot of veteran tenders early...that first goal the other night was bad but overtime was great...again, more time needed for assesment and for game to come together..but i know, we all remember Huet
Jesse, One of the strengths of the team last year was not allowing a lot of shots on goal. Do you think the amount of shots against so far this season will end up being a problem?
Jesse Rogers (1:33 PM)
I think it could be...I remember talking to Turco after game 1 in colorado..Hawks gave up like 41 shots and i asked him if he signed up for this or the teams that gave up about 20 all last season...he was surprised by the barrage but everyone knows its a work in progress. I said it before the season, team defense is the biggest challenge with all the turnover...so keep an eye on how much they play in their own zone
Kevin C. (Elmwood Park, IL)
Jesse, I know Q is a big juggler of lines, but why would he mess up the first line (Toews, Hossa) early in last game? He put it back together later on and BOOM Hossa scored. Is there such a thing as over-thinking line juggling? Not letting it simmer for a bit?
Jesse Rogers (1:34 PM)
Yeah, in the morning skate he had Toews with Hossa/Kopy on Monday but did not start the game like that..I dont know why he did that...today, same thing..Toews with those two..I think he stays this way cause even Hossa said when they switched they got a spark
I know it is early, but have we seen the this movie before? I am not sold on Turco, he gives up too many bad goals, any thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (1:36 PM)
I got hammered the other night on twitter for pointing that out but at the same time as I said in previous answer, give veterans a little time to get their game in order...maybe he should have played even mroe in preseason but you want to see what else you have in the organization...bottom line: there has been a bunch of weak goals and that cant continue long term
Fitz (My Cube)
Jess, why did skille get scratched the other day?
Jesse Rogers (1:36 PM)
John Scott/size/buffalo possible retaliation.
Anna S. (South Carolina)
Why does Q persist in keeping Scott in the lineup when his TOI is so wretched?
Jesse Rogers (1:38 PM)
Again, big presence..Everyone used to complain the Hawks did not have an enforcer..no one wants to fight this guy...Al Secord and Bob Probert is his prime dont grow on trees...this is what you get with an enforcer..you think they got him for pp time? He needs to be better but dont expect a ton or dont expect an enforcer on the ice
Jesse Rogers (1:38 PM)
Its one or the other is basically what Im saying
i heard Stalberg is scratched for today's game...is he nursing an injury? we could use his big frame in front of Luongo tonight
Jesse Rogers (1:39 PM)
You heard wrong. If I didnt report it, dont trust it. lol. Stalberg is in. Hendry the scratch most likely...
Brian (Bloomington, IN)
Patrick Kane is a -5 (tied for worst on the team). While he does score a lot of his points on the PP and the season is still young, this number is way off from last year's +16 performance. Is he suffering from not playing on the same line as such a solid two-way center as Tazer? Don't get me wrong, I love them both, but Sharpie and Bick aren't the most defensive-minded forwards on the team as well. I think Troy Brouwer's two-way capabilities would compliment that line nicely. Thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (1:41 PM)
Maybe a little with the Toews thing...I also think Toews is benefitting form Hossa as is Kopy..hes so hot its going to help the plus/minus of anyone on the ice with him...but I think its about the team defense more than anything..there are a bunch of surprising minus players like Hammer, etc so they need to shore that part up
Jay (West Chicago)
As of today, who do you think would be the odd D-man out once Campbell returns? I think Cullimore's played well since being brought up from Rockford. I haven't been impressed with Scott, he seems hesitant to play the enforcer which I assumed would be his role, and Coach Q doesn't seem to be a fan of Hendry. There's still time for this to shake out but who do you see as the one who'll be left out?
Jesse Rogers (1:44 PM)
Tough call..and some behind the scenes stuff may play a part but you're right about Hendry...I would kind of guess him cause Scott actually is playing the enforcer role...I dont think many want to fight him..Culli will either play himself back down to minors or not so I think it kind of depends on him...They like Hendry's wheels and he can still improve but Culli is what he is...Tough call...could keep them all by the way. that might be the answer
Will Nick Leddy be back in the NHL this season or will the Blackhawks hold him under 10 games to add a year on his contract?
Jesse Rogers (1:45 PM)
I actually think he will be back based on how the D is playing now but I guess if Boynton keeps playing decent than maybe not...you can hide a number 6 d-man but you cant hide 5 and 6 in my opinion
Why is Roberto Loungo called by most a world class goaltender? I just don't get it, sure he won a Gold Medal but that is it, no cup for him yet and he seems average at best to me
Jesse Rogers (1:46 PM)
100% agreed. especially at 10 mil..reminds me of Theodore...living off 1 or 2 good/great years and they are always considered great..finally people realized that about theodore..maybe louongo is next
Jesse, Great as always with your posts. After watching a few weeks of the season, what teams have surprised you the most and which ones might not be as good as first thought?
Jesse Rogers (1:48 PM)
Well, I guess Ive learned never to dount Nashville but I did going into it..they always seem to impress...A lot of people high on St. Louis and I guess if Halak plays lights out they could be good but I say the jury is still way out on them...ask me at the end of october, I need a couple more weeks!
Where do you see the "NHL Wheel O' Justicea?¢" landing for Rick Rypien after he grabbed the Wild fan last night?
Jesse Rogers (1:48 PM)
I would say double digits for sure...15-20 max
Any idea on who the starting goalie will be for the Canucks?
Jesse Rogers (1:49 PM)
No, they might be announcing it as we speak so Ill find out right after this chat and tweet it out..@espnchihawks if you want to follow
please please please answer!!!! which player from last year is missed the most? one for behind the scenes locker room stuff and one for on the ice play? THANKS
Jesse Rogers (1:50 PM)
Actually my trusted friend at TSN just told me Louongo is in!!!!!
Jesse Rogers (1:52 PM)
Back to that last question...I guess Ladd if we take Niemi out of the equation...and burish in the room and BUff!
Joe Koperski (Lisle)
Jesse, you are the best Hawks sports writer around. During the Hawks practice did they work on the defensive zone puck control and puck control thru the neutral zone? I feel that is the weakenss of the club at this time
Jesse Rogers (1:53 PM)
They work on that stuff yes, but as I mentioned earlier not much practice time so far this yr so you can see when it gets sloppy and when it cleans up after a practice or two
Hi Jesse, Will Pisani ever be the healthy scratch over Stalberg or Skille? In my opinion, he's not very effective, and I don't even particularly like the look of him on the PK. Thanks.
Jesse Rogers (1:54 PM)
Agreed..Ive been waiting for that...think it will come..I think they trust him defensively more than anything
Any idea what will happen to the Canuck that shoved a fan (who was doing nothing wrong) last night?
Jesse Rogers (1:55 PM)
A bunch of questions about Rypien...He is suspended indefintiely..cause it will be more than 5 games he can have a face to face hearing In NY and he will do so very soon and then they will determine punishment...low end is 10..high end is 20 in my opinion
Scott Koltun (Madison/Morgan St)
Jesse,Can you please admit after more than a Season that Tomas Kopecky is not only a solid NHL player, but also a very important piece of the puzzle for this year's Blackhawks team? You have gone out of your way to point out that 'Pecker is not a good player for his entire tenure w/ the Hawks...I'm waiting for you to admit that he is legit good!
Jesse Rogers (1:57 PM)
Def have not gone out of my way..but I will admit he is important after seeing his willinginess to go to the net..I just dont think he has great hands so if hes not causing havoc in front than he should be on the top line...I dont love that he barks but doesnt bite..if he dropped them once, Id respect that a whole lot more BUT I do like his gritty, team attitude..def grown on me and I think a lot of fans..keep going to the net and I'll be happy!
Jesse Rogers (1:57 PM)
Should NOT be on the top line
Jesse Rogers (1:58 PM)
Thats what I meant to say in that sentence
Jesse, do you have the forward lines for tonight's game against Vancouver?
Jesse Rogers (1:59 PM)
Yes, IT LOOKS LIKE:Kopy/Toews/HossaBrouwer/Sharp/KanePisani/Bolland/BickellStalberg/Dowell/Skilleif they go the way they went this morn
Jesse Rogers (2:00 PM)
Im jumping on espn 1000 in a minute or two for like 3 minutes then Ill come back to a few more questions if you guys can wait...put on radio..ill keep going until they call
Nick A (Deerfield)
How is Campbell's knee recovering? Any update on when he's back?
Jesse Rogers (2:00 PM)
Hes on time..whatever that 4-5 weeks was after he got hurt..not skating just yet but soon
When is the puck possession going to improve? We have been getting out shot most games and by a wide margin and obviously that was completely opposite last season.
Jesse Rogers (2:01 PM)
Going to take a little more time. Will help when Campbell returns...So, another month??
Joe Koperski (Lisle)
Is Hamous the D-Man for the Canucks playing tonight? by the way dad says hi
Jesse Rogers (2:02 PM)
Hamuis is game time decision
Ed Koperski (Tuscon Az)
Hey Jesse from AZ is it true that Kaner had his mom come out and take care of him cause he was sick
Jesse Rogers (2:03 PM)
Yes. He called her at like 9 am in buffalo and she was at his home by 2 pm. Hey, he only missed one game instead of two so she did something right
Jesse Rogers (2:03 PM)
going on espn 1000..ill try to type as I talk..could get ugly
Any chance of seeing Skille and/or Stalberg move to the third line with Bolland? Pisani seems like he can't contribute due to his lack of speed and skill. Mean while, Skille brings a spark when he is on the ice. I believe he needs more ice time, your thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (2:05 PM)
Yes, I think once a line or two gets stale something like that might happen..Q likes the chemistry of those bottom lines right now..I htink they got one game with Bolland but those guys are learning responsiblity on defense..pisani more experience and thats the key defensive line so I understand
With all the offensive talent the Hawks have, why is the PP so hot & cold? I understand the other teams get paid too, but it seems they either score quickly or struggle to even get control in the offensive zone.
Jesse Rogers (2:07 PM)
Its just how it is..I cant tell you for sure..neither can Q...more talent means they sometimes get fancy but thats not always a good thing...got to be gritty sometimes
Jesse Rogers (2:10 PM)
Ok, Im back..how was that?
Jesse kind of off the subject but did the Blackhawks give Fooley a stanley cup ring?
Jesse Rogers (2:10 PM)
Paul (Burr Ridge)
With no more Ladd-Kessler matchups for these games, which fight do you think we're more likely to see? John Scott vs. one of their big men, or Rypien vs. some guy in row 2?
Jesse Rogers (2:10 PM)
Ha. Good one. wont be rypien for a whiel so Ill say Scott but it takes two to tango
Joe (Edison park)
Biggest surpirse so far? Biggest Dissapointment so far? I'll hang up and listen.
Jesse Rogers (2:11 PM)
Player wise? Kopecky for sure...Brouwer..you guess which is which but its early for both of them!
Am I wrong to root for Hossa not to get the Hart trophy or lead the league in scoring this year? I don't want to have bonuses cutting into the salary cap next yr.
Jesse Rogers (2:12 PM)
Unless Im mistaken he doesnt have those..only for entry level deals and I think guys over 35...
You pointed out that this is a contract year for Seabrook. Do you think he's back wearing his Blackhawks sweater next season?
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
I'll say yes, and that's not with any inside knowledge..seems like they have made their top 4 d-men a priority..I mean if he leaves you just have to replace him..But his demands will certianly play a part...5 mil for 5 years sound about right
Turco getting the nod tonight?
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
Jesse Rogers (2:16 PM)
Thats going to do it for today. If I did not get to your question, email me at email@example.com..follow me on twitter @espnchihawks..and check out my blog before and of course after the game..have a good boynton story going up soon...harsh quotes about playing for ducks...enjoy the game tonight!
