Chad Ford (1:03 PM)
Aloha everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. It's been a crazy few weeks in the NBA. We have a lot to cover today in the Association and we'll also take a few questions at the end of the chat on the NBA Draft. Let's roll ....
Baron Davis is on the trading block, right? Without any interest of course...
Chad Ford (1:05 PM)
It's safe to assume that Davis is on the block. And, like Gilbert Arenas, it's also safe to assume he's not garnering much interest from anyone. The Clippers have a great young core and know they aren't ready to compete in the West. If they can move Davis and Chris Kaman before the trade deadline, they will.
Fran (New York)
Chad, who has been the biggest rookie surprise thus far? Surprise in a good way of course.
Chad Ford (1:07 PM)
I've got to concur with my friend David Thorpe. We knew Derrick Favors had big time talent, but he's surprised all of us with how quickly he's been able to impact games. I'm still trying to understand how Philly passed on him. He would've been perfect there. I think Eric Bledsoe's played well in the early going as well. He too has a lot of talent, but we thought it might take a year or two.
Can we all agree that Chris Bosh is a really good player, a perennial all star, but he never was/is a superstar? I thought that term was thrown around too loosely this summer.
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
I think the difference was that in Toronto -- he was the team and that pushed him up a little higher. Once he committed to Miami, that was over. He's third fiddle there now and even All-Star may be a tough designation for him to earn down the road.
Thoughts on a slow start from Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton? will they mesh as they play together longer?
Chad Ford (1:11 PM)
I've never been a huge Raymond Felton fan. I think Knicks fans are figuring out why. Gotta believe the Knicks will pull out all the stops to try to land Steve Nash. He's not a long-term solution, but in the short term a reuniting with D'Antoni and Stoudemire should be great. Would Suns take a combo of Felton, Curry expiring contract and Gallinari? Probably not, but it's worth asking about.
Chuck (Los Angeles)
How about Baron Davis and Chris Kaman for Bosh? The HEAT get a point guard and size inside.
Chad Ford (1:11 PM)
With Taj Gibson playing great so far, any chance Denver takes back Deng/Gibson/random player/picks/cash for Melo?
Chad Ford (1:13 PM)
Perhaps ... but you have to start to wonder whether Denver blew it when they passed on the change to get Derrick Favors. Melo is going to leave and Favors has the makings of a superstar. The Deng/Gibson combo doesn't. You would've thought that Masai Ujiri would've learned his lesson from Toronto about holding onto a superstar too long.
How good with the Magic be with Nash at the helm?
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
Insert the another 25 teams in place of the Magic and you'd also get the same answer. Nash makes EVERYBODY better with the possible exception of Hornets, Jazz, Celtics right now. But yes, Magic would be AWESOME
Is Nash really on the block, or is that just heresay?
Chad Ford (1:17 PM)
From my calls around the league, I think it's more conjecture at this point. The Suns don't look like a playoff contender in the early going and Nash is the one asset they have that could get them something important in return. But I've yet to talk to a league source inside or outside the Suns who has told me they know Nash is available. But I understand the thinking and wouldn't be shocked if he was wearing a different uniform in February.
Dave G (DC)
Carmelo's going to the Knicks, right?
Chad Ford (1:18 PM)
All signs point that direction ... yes. Unless another contender in a big market is willing to trade for him and offers him the security of a big extension now ... I think it's off to NY this summer.
I think the Pacers could be a surprise team out of the East this year...do you?
Chad Ford (1:21 PM)
Might be. They haven't played a very tough schedule and I'm still trying to figure out that 25 point loss to Philly ... but in the rest of their games, they've been good. Darren Collison, Roy Hibbert and Tyler Hansbrough all have PERs over 20. Danny Granger is playing well. I'm just not totally convinced they can win 40+ games in Jim O'Brien's system. When shots are falling (like they did in crazy fashion last night) they're very dangerous. But when they aren't ... ugh.
Any chance Bosh gets traded for a legit big man?
Chad Ford (1:22 PM)
I'm not sure why I'm getting flooded with Bosh trade questions at the moment. I think there is zero chance the Heat trade Bosh. Zero.
Joakim Noah, starting eastern C in all star game? possible on MVP ballot the way he's been playing?
Chad Ford (1:23 PM)
No on starting C on All-Star team (remember Dwight Howard?) and no on MVP ballot. But All-Star? I think so.
Chad Ford (1:26 PM)
If I was voting today ... CP3 would have my vote. But Howard's a close second. He has a PER over 30. If he maintains that all year, he's got a great shot. The defense, rebounding are all there. But Hakeem has really helped him on the offensive end. He's finally becoming the player I think we all felt he could be.
Patrick J. (Orlando, FL)
Chad, can you hit on how sick Dwight Howard's numbers are even though he plays such few minutes so far? MVP if he keeps this up?
Chad Ford (1:26 PM)
Sorry ... the question didn't post last time. My last answer was referring to this question.
Rank- stack these points guards.Rondo,Rose,DWill, CP3, Rondo, Nash, ...Lebron???Who's number 1 and why?
Chad Ford (1:28 PM)
LeBron isn't a point guard. But here's my order.1. Chris Paul2. Rajon Rondo3. Deron Williams4. Steve Nash5. Derrick Rose
Is Elton Brand playing himself into being tradeable?
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
Everyone in Philly is praying that the answer is yes. You wonder if a team desperate for some size -- a team like the Pistons -- might reconsider. A deal of Rip Hamilton and Charlie V for Brand would work financially. If I was Detroit I don't think I'd do that deal, but ...
Who would teams want from the Raptors? Feels like the team should be blown up.
Chad Ford (1:32 PM)
I think the team did blow up ... this summer. You're just seeing the fallout. I don't think there's an untouchable player on the roster right now.
Kevin (Twin Cities)
23-24 last night; can coach finally show me some Love and more minutes?
Chad Ford (1:34 PM)
He better or I think the Wolves might send Rambis packing. Team is awful. Love is the one real bright spot right now. He's very unhappy. Something has to give. I think we'll see him featured like he was last night in LA much, much more. The Wolves don't want to lose him too.
Jeff (Los Angeles)
How much better do the Lakers when a (presumably healthy) Bynum comes back?
Chad Ford (1:35 PM)
How do they get better than they already are. They have been AWESOME in the early going and I really like this look from LA. With Bynum the team gets better defensively, but offensively this line-up is amazing. I'm not sure Phil Jackson messes with a good thing.
Rudy Gay... the next big thing?
Chad Ford (1:37 PM)
Not sure about the next big thing .. but the next Danny Granger (who I love as a player) ... yes. I was wrong to rank Memphis so low in the pre-season. I think they have the look of a 7th or 8th seed. Lots of young talent that is still learning. But when they gel, they are very dangerous. Let's see if Michael Heisley can afford to keep it all together this summer. I'm pretty sure they'll spend what it takes to keep Marc Gasol. Zach Randolph could be the one guy left on the outside looking in.
I agree that the Pacers development will always be limited under O'Brien's coaching philosophy...do you see any potentially better available coaches out there if in case ownership did call it quits with O'Brien?
Chad Ford (1:39 PM)
Mike Brown was an assistant in Indy before he left for Cleveland. He'd bring some toughness to the team that they lack. To me, he's the perfect fit for a young team like this.
Chad, saw a report in a small local newspaper that Nash is permanently leaving the Suns to pursue a career in politics in Canada. It said it will be effective Nov 15. How is this not on ESPN's front page?! (you can thank me for the tip later)
Chad Ford (1:41 PM)
Funny stuff. http://bit.ly/91Sxts
why won't isiah thomas go AWAY.
Chad Ford (1:43 PM)
Better question ... why hasn't James Dolan taking out a restraining order against him.
Dave G (DC)
If the Thunder had drafted Curry over Harden, where would they be right now?
Chad Ford (1:43 PM)
Scary. Scary. Scary.
Bill Simmons tweeted a couple of weeks ago that Kahn is going to overpay Greg Oden next summer, but isn't Oden the PERFECT compliment to Love?
Chad Ford (1:46 PM)
If he stays healthy, Oden will be a Top 5 center in the league because he's so dominant on the defensive end. BUT how could you give a kid who has missed more than half of his career with injuries a long-term deal? That's scary. But I do understand why Kahn would roll the dice. He's not luring a top tier free agent to Minnesota. The team is terrible. Why not swing for the fences? If Oden's healthy, he's a genius. If he's not, they can't get any worse.
If the Grizzlies had drafted Curry OR Evans over Thabeet, where would THEY be right now?
Chad Ford (1:49 PM)
Here we go. The What if game. Thabeet was a huge risk/big reward type player. Grizzlies had him ranked higher than everyone in the league ... but no one had Curry ranked No. 2. I think the wiff on Evans (who played at Memphis) was the more egregious error.
Paul S (Toronto)
Chad, please name your first 5 favourites in the next draft?
Chad Ford (1:51 PM)
1. Harrison Barnes, North Carolina2. Perry Jones, Baylor3. Kyrie Irving, Duke4. Enes Kanter, Kentucky5. Jared Sullinger, Ohio State
Chad - If Enes Kanter and Josh Selby don't play a single minute of college basketball this season, how would that affect their draft status?
Chad Ford (1:52 PM)
Not a huge amount. Kanter especially is a known product by scouts. He can easily go to Europe and get paid and play big minutes there. Selby's a bit tougher as there are question marks about what position he plays and his maturity. I still think Kanter would be a Top 5 pick. Selby would still be lottery probably.
Ryan (New York)
Let's Talk Draft! Any breaking news on top prospects or someone rocketing up GM's watch lists?
Chad Ford (1:54 PM)
Bit early for that considering the first college games were played on Tuesday! But Jordan Hamilton of Texas got off to a nice start. He was terrible last season, but he does have lottery type talent. Reminds me a bit of Rashard Lewis. If he can improve his shot selection this year, he could really move up the charts.
Where do you see jimmer fredette and his ackward scoop layup in the draft? Or which teams will he fit with?
Chad Ford (1:55 PM)
Scouts are divided on Jimmer. He's obviously a great college player, but they're still figuring out whether his game will translate at the next level. He's a late first round to early second round pick right now.
Dave (New Jersey)
I know you like Morehead State's Kenneth Faried, where do you see him getting drafted in June?
Chad Ford (1:57 PM)
Love him and don't understand why more college commentators don't talk about him. He's been the best rebounder in college basketball and has such an amazing motor. NBA scouts were actually distraught when he pulled out of the draft last year. I think he would've been a Top 20 pick. Could push himself into the lottery this year. He's young for a senior.
Does the draft even matter with the possibility of a lockout next year?
Chad Ford (1:59 PM)
The draft will happen before the lockout. So yes, it matters. Better question is whether a number of top college underclassmen will decide to skip the draft out of fear of a long lockout. The feeling I'm getting from around the league is that a lockout is very likely. But few people believe at this point that the league will actually miss any regular season games.
Is Rubio seeing a reason to go to Minnesota....KAHN!!!!
Chad Ford (2:00 PM)
I don't know anyone outside of some folks in the TWolves management who believes that Rubio is coming to the Wolves next season.
Chad Ford (2:01 PM)
Gotta run everyone. Thanks so much for coming to the chat today. We'll do this every week, same time (Wednesday's at 1 p.m. ET) so see you next week.
