Stephania Bell (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon Sports Nation - with 3 games coming in the next two days, there's not a lot of time to scramble for pickups - but you know you'll need someone, somewhere. Always more injuries to deal with...let's see what you've got.
Nathan "The Disgruntled Thanksgiving Malcolm Floyd Owner" (The S
What is this I hear about Floyd re-injuring his hamstring last night? I was able to watch most of the game and never spotted him limping. Is there any news to report that is the opposite of your Stephy Bad News moniker? Thanks for your time and happy early Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Stephania Bell (3:03 PM)
Nathan: Well, I'm just hearing he tweaked it also - and I don't know yet what that means. Sometimes it's just as simple as he felt a little something so they're going to be cautious for a few days, sometime it's more.Remember he felt a little soreness late last week too so we knew it wasn't quite 100% - but he was still present and somewhat productive Monday. Not to panic yet - but worth keeping an eye on.
Hello sweet Stephania, Is it true Jahvid Best is out this Thursday? His toes must really be bothering him. Can you tell us a little about turf toe and how it effects a RB like Best. Thank You kindly.
Stephania Bell (3:06 PM)
Jobin: So polite this Thanksgiving week... I don't know about him being out - but for fantasy owners I think they shouldn't count on much, if anything. He apparently had a setback during Sunday's game and honestly, this will probably not resolve 100% until he has the offseason to recover. That said, the rest of the season will be him playing as much as he can, sometimes decently, sometimes not. Not a lot to count on. Makes it hard for him to push off, pivot, run hard. Loses traction with his footing. Maurice Morris is expected to start Thursday.
Can you tell me more about what compartment syndrome is? Is there a possibility Nicks will be out longer than three weeks?
Stephania Bell (3:09 PM)
Kurt: The short answer is that the muscles of the lower leg are separated into compartments. Those compartments are divided by connective tissue called fascia. So the compartments are like containers - and along with the muscles, there are nerves and blood vessels housed within those compartments. If there is trauma which then results in swelling, the swelling can constrict the nerves and blood vessels - which is of course painful. Ultimately no blood supply means no oxygen to tissue and if not addressed immediately, muscle can die. That's why it has to be "released: via surgery very quickly. The recovery mostly involves the tissue healing and then regaining the motion, strength etc to get back to play. It often is longer than 3 weeks - but it's also not impossible that he returns in 3 weeks if the healing is good. So the bottom line us you won't know much more until it gets closer.
Will I be watching the return of Reggie Bush while enjoying some turkey on Thursday?
Stephania Bell (3:10 PM)
Cliff: All signs point to yes.
Brian (Columbus, Ohio)
How serious is Mike Williams (Sea) injury? The reports are a bit vague saying it 'could be serious' but he came on the field after the injury Sunday...
Stephania Bell (3:11 PM)
Brian: Seahawks still keeping it a bit vague saying only that it's an "unusual" injury and that they want to see how he responds to treatment. Hmm. Doesn't sound like they expect a quick resolution in any case.
Jon (New York, New York)
What do you think about Gates going forward? Will he be a game time decision the rest of the season or will he be 100% healthy next weekend after three weeks off?
Stephania Bell (3:14 PM)
Jon: I certainly don't think he'll be 100%. He's still having pain with running. But whether he recovers enough to get to the point where he can play is the question. Unfortunately, as much as people would like to put a time frame on this, you can't. Gates is assessing his progress every day to see how his foot feels as he tests it. And he very well could be a gtd for the foreseeable future. I would not count him out yet for the remainder of the season but I would be prepared with backup until he shows he can go.
Robin (Yonkers, NY)
What's the word with Felix Jones hurting his hip? Any chance he doesn't play on Thursday? Is Choice working with the first team or is it Barber?
Stephania Bell (3:16 PM)
Robin: Apparently hurt it Sunday and said it felt better Monday but last I heard he still wasn't practicing today. No indication that he sits Thursday but they haven't told us what it is (only that some x-rays were negative). Need to see if he can work out on it tomorrow. And not sure about Choice.
Thanks for telling everyone how serious turf toe can be. I had problems with it in high school playing soccer. It can be painful just to walk let alone run.
Stephania Bell (3:17 PM)
Thanks Paul - b/c for those who have never had it, it's hard to imagine sometimes how a toe can possibly keep a guy off the field - but it's very real.
Hi Stephania, what's going on with the Redskins RBs?
Stephania Bell (3:20 PM)
Dave: Portis says he wants to play next game but I have a hard time seeing it. He had another MRI - showed swelling - it will need to settle down and not convinced they let him go back a week after a setback. Torain not likely to play this week. Williams likely to start.
No 49ers talk. What's going on with Vernon Davis and will he play Monday night. We're not out of it yet.....ok, maybe a little.
Stephania Bell (3:22 PM)
Stephen: As much as I bleed red and gold, it's hard to be positive after Sunday. As far as Davis, he aggravated the same ankle and left the game in the 4th. He said later it wasn't serious. My interpretation would be that he's probably going to play this week but not be at his best and at risk for aggravating it again.
Anthony (Sunnyvale, CA)
Whats the word on Pierre Thomas? How close is he to coming back, Turkey Day? If he does, how involved will he be in the offense?
Stephania Bell (3:24 PM)
Anthony: He won't be there Thursday. There are conflicting reports about his injury. Saints maintain it's a sprain (earlier report last weekend said he tore a tendon) - makes it hard to assess what exactly is going on. Either way - he was not at practice today which came as a bit of a surprise after he had been doing more work. Stay tuned - but figure him out for at least this week.
Cranberries (stuck together in the dark)
Happy Thanksgiving! What is the status with Mike Sims-Walker? Will he play this week? If not, is he worth keeping on my roster?
Stephania Bell (3:25 PM)
Word out of Jacksonville is that he has a high ankle sprain and now we are looking at a multi-week injury. Time to move on.
Phil (Pgh, PA)
Any news on Britt? I have Gates and MW Sea and only 1 IR spot. Need to know if he will be usable any time soon.
Stephania Bell (3:27 PM)
Phil: Nothing new - he says he's feeling some better but his activity has been limited to pool work. He's not expected to be close to returning for another couple of weeks at least.
Jacob (Kansas City)
Beanie Wells looked healthy on Sunday. Is he back to 100%??
Stephania Bell (3:29 PM)
Jacob: I think it's premature to call him 100% - right now they're just happy he got through the game. And apparently without any setback. Let's see him do it a couple weeks in a row before getting too confident.
Happy Thanksgiving! What do you know about Collie? He was on the verge of a huge day when they yanked him.
Stephania Bell (3:31 PM)
Josh: All we heard from the Colts after Sunday was that he was removed for precautionary reasons. Most people saw him go down after a big hit - the team is not saying he suffered another concussion - we don't know exactly what caused them to remove him - whether they didn't like what they saw or whether he had some symptoms after that hit. As of Monday they were not giving any other update, so...it's just wait and see.
Mike (Irate Brandon Marshall Owner) (MIchigan)
What is going on with Marshall's hamstring injury?
Stephania Bell (3:33 PM)
Mike: You just might have to be irate until late in the week. No real news will appear until the Dolphins have to produce an injury report. Marshall has said he will do everything in his power to play - but admittedly that looked like a pretty decent hamstring injury when it happened. I'd be prepared for an alternate.
Is JStew coming back anytime soon?? Thanks and have a great thanksgiving!!
Stephania Bell (3:35 PM)
Hi Jim - and happy Thanksgiving back to you - coach Fox has said he doesn't know whether Stewart will make it back this week. Concussions require medical clearance - for practice and play - and that won't come until later in the week. Goodson has had a couple hundred yard performances so they're probably OK sticking with him if needed.
Rodgers (Frozen Tundra)
With Driver still battling his injury, do you think James Jones has taken over the WR2 job in GB?
Stephania Bell (3:37 PM)
I think Jones has taken over. Period. Driver actually seemed to get through the game pretty well - but it seemed the deep stuff was going to Jennings and Jones. I don't imagine Driver is quite 100% - but the next question is whether his 100% is enough to top those two. My guess is it's not.
Hi Stephania. What are you thankful for this year? Rice looked pretty good on Sunday. Think he is now a pretty safe start from an injury standpoint ?
Stephania Bell (3:41 PM)
Kevin: I am thankful for the nice people who come to my chat - makes my job much more pleasant...As for Rice, I thought it was certainly a solid start. He played more snaps than Childress said he would and as far as I know, there have been no setbacks. For his confidence, getting back on the field for the first time post-surgery had to be a big boost. But he is still getting his game shape back and figuring out timing, etc. And he needs to be challenged more contact-wise. Prob worth a decent WR3 play for fantasy.
Will Romo be back in time for the playoffs???
Stephania Bell (3:42 PM)
Kevin: I don't think he'll be back. THe only possibility I see is if the Cowboys make the playoffs and he comes back for that. But if they're out (and considering they're going strong right now), it's a bit risky to bring him back.
Where are we on Steve Smith NYG?
Stephania Bell (3:43 PM)
Ryan: A week further along in healing but probably a couple weeks away still from a return.
Marc (Malden, MA)
Stephania Bell (3:44 PM)
Marc: Better than he was, but not over it. His foot started bothering him in the second half of last week's game. At least it wasn't after one catch like the last time he played. I expect he'll be kept to limited work this week and then they'll have him for the game - but it's not like he's past it yet.
HI Stephania,Happy Turkey-Day, what's the status on Matthews, is he ever going to play?
Stephania Bell (3:46 PM)
Jo: Keep in mind - Mathews has played in most of the games this season - which is probably part of the problem here. He aggravated the ankle the first week of November and now they're keeping him out - hopefully long enough for him to really make some progress. Hard to know how they're going to work him back, TOlbert obviously handling the load just fine right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's out another week.
Following up on MSW, why would it be time to move on? Is he not expected back for Weeks 15-17?
Stephania Bell (3:47 PM)
Jem: B/c he's been inconsistent at the position even when healthy. Now you're talking high ankle which is usually a month or so to recover. Maybe he's back the next two weeks - but is he really worth a roster spot that entire time? Not in my opinion.
Gates tried to get back into action last night but was ruled out before kickoff. Is this a sign that we'll see him on the field this weekend?
Stephania Bell (3:49 PM)
Joe: He never tested his foot last night. So he really wasn't ever an option to go in the game. And I go back to what I've been saying all along with him which is as much as we'd like to put a timetable on it, it literally is day to day with him. He's so talented that if he wakes up and it's good, they'll let him go - but it's not close yet.
What about Patrick Crayton? He looked good on that TD until coming down hard on the left wrist. Serious??
Stephania Bell (3:51 PM)
Rich: Adam Schefter reported that it was dislocated and that Crayton was having an MRI to determine the course of action. Kevin Acee, beat writer who covers Chargers, said he is expected out at least 2 weeks. Either way, he won't be around this week - Chargers lucky that VJax is back this week.
Thoughts on DET putting Stafford back in this season?
Stephania Bell (3:52 PM)
Suzi: Just don't see it happening. It was 7 weeks I think that he was out the first time. Why risk it? They would never say that now - but if he continues with non-surgical rehab, I doubt unless it were emergency QB situation that we'd see him.
Hi Stephania, Thoughts on dropping P. Garcon for M. Thomas with Sims-Walker missing multi-weeks?
Stephania Bell (3:53 PM)
Christine: I might do it. Garcon has just struggled for the bulk of the games that he's played this year. And Thomas has little competition for receptions.
How is Jeremy Shockey? And what do you think of Jimmy Graham as a potential surprise stud in the coming weeks? They apparently love him, and he's 6'8"...potential matchup nightmare. I am thankful for you answering this question this Thanksgiving.
Stephania Bell (3:55 PM)
Hi ROss: That's so nice...and yes, they do love Graham. Apparently Shockey was limited in Tuesday practice. The fact that he's doing some work suggests he'll go - but you might then see some split time between him and Graham.
Will Addai ever be back, or are the Colts planning to IR him?
Stephania Bell (3:56 PM)
Doug: Oh I think the Colts will use Addai as soon as he is ready to go- problem is they don't know when that will be. But there's no indication they're even considering IR. He's basically day-to-day also with everyone just watching and waiting to see how he improves with therapy. Nerve injuries are always slow to heal so this is not surprising, just frustrating.
Any word on Owen Daniels' status going forward? I'm looking to start Joel Dreessen.
Stephania Bell (3:58 PM)
Jack: Daniels has really struggled with this hamstring issue and in general coming back from his ACL surgery. Kubiak continues to praise his efforts to return but Daniels' health has not cooperated. I would plan on Dreesen unless we hear something new.
Hi Stephania, any word on a timetable on Fred Taylor's return? As a BJGE owner, I kinda hope he doesn't return any time soon...
Stephania Bell (3:59 PM)
David: Seems like every week he's on the verge. Makes me think he's about ready to play but the Patriots thinking when will be the time to put him in. And with BJGE doing so well, there's no rush. I think we see him soon - next week or two though.
Stephanie, is it time to remove Collie from my roster? Blair White is available. Thanks-
Stephania Bell (4:01 PM)
Wendy: I'd have a hard time removing Collie b/c he's been so outstanding when he's been there. Unless we hear of a definitive setback this week, I'm keeping him on my roster, even if he's on my bench for a week or two. White played great (amazing TD catch this weekend) - but he becomes not very valuable if Wayne, Garcon and Collie are all in the mix.
Another chat where every one of my injury questions was answered. I'm thankful that you do this for us every week, Ms. Bell. Happy Thanksgiving.
Stephania Bell (4:03 PM)
And on that wonderfully sweet note from J.B., I am signing off for the day. I will have a blog out later today and again on Saturday. No Friday chats because of the holiday - but big podcast tomorrow and I will give you updates as I get them: Stephania_ESPN on Twitter. Thanks so much for your great questions and well wishes. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
