Chat with Doug Williams
Williams is a 2011 inductee of the Black College Football HOF.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, former Redskins quarterback Doug Williams will be stopping by to chat about his experience as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
Doug Williams was the first black quarterback to play in and win a Super Bowl. In Super Bowl XXII, he threw for four TDs, 340 yards and defeated the Broncos, 42-10.
Williams will be one of the 28 quarterbacks featured in ESPN.com's "I Am A World Champion" project, which will take an in-depth look at every signal-caller who has won a Lombardi Trophy.
Send your questions now and join Williams Thursday at 3 p.m. ET!
Doug, Who is going to win the super bowl?
Doug Williams (3:00 PM)
Wow! That's a tough one. This is one of the more evenly matched physically games we'll see in a Super Bowl. We have two hot QBs playing in Big Ben and Rogers but I think the Steelers will come out on top in this one.

What do you think of the cutler situation?
Doug Williams (3:02 PM)
I talked about him yesterday with Michael Wilbon. I think it's unfortunate that people are beating him up. He does have a torn MCL and that's hard to get around. People are saying that he should've toughed it out but we don't know his threshold of pain so for people to judge him is just unfair.

If I remember correctly you played flawless in SB XXII. What thoughts went through your mind the night before? Probably didn't sleep well?
Doug Williams (3:03 PM)
A lot a people don't know this but I was in a lot of pain. I had a root canal the day before the game. I didn't sleep much but it was because of the root canal. I was blessed to wake up the next day pain free and to win a Super Bowl.

How does it feel to be the only quarterback from the SWAC to win a Superbowl?
Doug Williams (3:05 PM)
It's easy to sit here and say it's a great feeling but Steve McNair was a yard short of maybe winning a Super Bowl. I'm blessed to have been in that situation and to show the level of competition and talent we have in the SWAC.
Mr. Doug Williams! My father has told me a lot about you. He said you're one of the all time greats in his opinion. In your opinion, is Peyton Manning better than Tom Brady?
Doug Williams (3:06 PM)
Wow! You're talking about two of the top tier QBs in the league. I'm a fan of both. Manning is great but Brady has three Super Bowl rings. I think its unfair to compare the two. If you go on Super Bowl wins, you'll have to say Brady but if you go on stats it will be Manning.

Hello! my names tyler hagen (go kc!!) how do you prepare to be on the biggest stage of the NFL?
Doug Williams (3:08 PM)
I think the preparation comes leading up to the Super Bowl. At the end of the day, it's about what you do to get there. You have to treat it as a regular football game. You have to look at it as if you're still between the lines. Mentally you have to prepare for it as if it's a regular football game. Leave all that hoopla to the media and the corporations. Just focus on what you need to do on the field.

Hey Doug, I was actually born on January 31st 1988, aside from that, what did it mean to you being the first black quarterback to not only play in a superbowl, but also win one, against john elway nonetheless?
Doug Williams (3:10 PM)
No. 1 it wasn't against John Elway, it was against the Broncos defense. No. 2 being the first African American QB to win a Super Bowl is something I'm thankful for and it's something that will be with me for the rest of my life.

What quaterback in today's game are you a fan of?
Doug Williams (3:11 PM)
I have a few of them. Josh Freeman, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Aaron Rogers, Tom Brady, Big Ben, Sanchez and the list goes on. I admire a bunch of guys for the way they play the game.
Garrett (Richmond, VA)
Mike Shanahan seems to believe that McNabb has a lot to do with the Redskins' losing. How much of the blame should Donovan be carrying?
Doug Williams (3:13 PM)
None. I really don't think you can put the losing on McNabb. You have to look at the roster as a whole. The Redskins are in a rebuilding mood. Receivers have been a problem and the O-Line is devastated. At the end of the day everyone is pointing their fingers at the QB but it's not always their fault.

How would you feel about the Redskins taking Cam Newton? Any similar traits between his game and yours?
Doug Williams (3:14 PM)
Cam and I are nothing alike. Cam is such a better athlete then I was. Its so hard to come up with those type of skills. I don't think the Skins will take with their pick.
can't wait for the ufl season to start what results r u looking for this year as general manager of the virginia destroyers
Doug Williams (3:16 PM)
We stated about a week ago that moving the Orlando franchise to Virginia is great. Orlando was in the championship game the past two seasons so the folks in the VA area should be happy that we have a ready made foundation. I look for big things to come.
What do you think the redskins need to do to get to the level that they were at when you played for them?
Doug Williams (3:17 PM)
We were fortunate. We might not have had the best overall talent but we had the best chemistry. Everybody has to have that respect of each other. We didn't have a lot of off the field problems. Today's Redskins need to come together and respect one another. Leave the off the field stuff off the field.
With the Grambling job just now opening up and your son headed there, is there a possible return to you alma mater?
Doug Williams (3:18 PM)
That's so amazing, I've gotten so many calls and text about this today. My son will be enrolling at Grambling in the spring. I haven't talked to anybody about it but I'm open to listen if they want me.
Pat (syracuse, ny) [via mobile]
Mr. Williams, huge fan.Which quarterback in todays game do you feel resembles your style of play the most?
Doug Williams (3:19 PM)
I'll have to say pocket passer Tom Brady or play maker Big Ben. I had to stay in the pocket in Washington (couldn't run like i used to) but in Tampa Bay I had to move around a lot.
Doug Williams (3:21 PM)
I think Super Bowl XLV is will be a great matchup of two hard-noise football teams. These are teams that play outside in the elements so I'm looking forward to see how they will play indoors. Thanks for the great questions. Enjoy the Super Bowl!
