AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Good morning, gang! We're back once again for an hour of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee is well in hand, so who is up first?
Shawn (St. Louis)
Gavin Floyd or Anibal "the Cannibal" Sanchez ROS?
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Floyd will be more consistent... Anibal will have great days and bad days... in the end, the stats will probably be close, but at least you can just leave Floyd in there.
Time to drop David Aardsma?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Whether it is surgery or not, it's going to be quite some time before he pitches again for Seattle... don't bother waiting.
Matt (Lancaster, PA)
Justin Morneau is killing me in a shallow 10 team mixed league. Am I going to regret dropping him for someone like Gaby Sanchez or Mitch Moreland?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
I don't think so... he's not producing, and while I do think he bounces back some, waiting for him to get there while Gaby puts up top 25 numbers is not to your benefit...
Just picked up Garza from waivers while dropping Ogando in a 12 team mixed league. Good move?
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I think so. I like Ogando, but he's not going to be there for you in September, and Garza is rising up the charts.
Pierre, Borbon, or Tabata?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Tabata. Pierre is slowly playing himself out of a job.
Drop soto (groin, pending MRI) for Ianetta, or wait out the results of the exam?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Yes, I would. I think Chris is slightly better the rest of the way sans injury, and the risk with Soto missing time will force your hand eventually anyway.
John Danks had an ugly line last night. Bad luck or hittable pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:09 AM)
A little of both... he's not an 0-6 pitcher, but not dominant enough to win on nights when he's not at 100 percent.
Who takes over for Pierre?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
Viciedo is going to get the call eventually... and he's been playing the outfield.
JR (Derby City)
Will Tim Stauffer continue to be productive?
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Productive, yes. Valuable, no. Without the wins coming in, his peripherals barely put him in top 75 SP.
Kelly Johnson is relly bad. That is all.
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Thank you for playing.
Struggling staff...Loaded in OF. Fair to offer Victorino for Haren in H2H point league?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Certainly fair to offer anything, as it's on the other guy to assess if he's being ripped off or not... but I think you don't have near enough here to get Haren.
Can Melky C keep this up? Top 50 player so far. I assume at some point he will remember he is Melky....
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I think he *can* keep this up. A better fantasy player than the stats indicate because they're so evenly spread.
jeff (San Diego)
Has the magic of Sam Fuld worn off? Is it time to pick up a guy like Ibanez or Melky
AJ Mass (11:17 AM)
Fuld still has a little more decline left in him, I fear. Melky time.
Kubel, Heyward, and Chris Young are my 2-4 outfielders. Who should be on the bench?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Right now Heyward is dinged up, so the decision is an easy one...
Ian Kennedy is looking GREAT so far. How would you rank him among: D. Hudson, Garza, Latos, Yovani?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Ian's best in show of that bunch... only Garza really comes close right now.
Joel Pineiro worth a look?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
He's pitching deep into games - a great sign given the long layoff - and while he's never going to get you K's... he shouldn't ever kill you in WHIP either.
I don't understand the CW that SPs are so much more valuable than RPs. Both help with 4 of the 5 pitcher stats. I would say there are 7 or so amazing RPs and 15 or so amazing SPs with really good ones you can stream behind them if you choose. Help explain the conventional wisdom to a constant learner of this incredible game.
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
It's IP. The best closers get you 3-4 per week, and one bad outing is huge, compared to the 6+ IP in a quality start. I'd say the top 20 SP are all more valuable than the No. 2 RP.
Who are you more worried about: Kevin Youkilis or David Wright? Which would you rather own?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Far more concerned with Youk.
Starting Peavy today?
AJ Mass (11:29 AM)
No... I rarely, if ever, start a pitcher out of the gate...
Can you talk about the new Seattle OF's? Will either be helpful in a deep AL league?
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Peguero and Wilson... should split time in LF. Peguero didn't impress much in previous stint. Wilson seems to be better overall hitter - I'd chance him first.
But..but.. he has a 9 on the daily notes!
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
The rating is a statistical assessment of last three years... We all know Peavy is an ace when healthy. I'd like to see for myself that he is indeed so.
Liam (Hamilton, On)
Adam Jones Or Logan Morrison?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
No question I go with LoMo over DigDug now that he's coming back into play.
Are you prepared for fantasy hockey if the NFL doesn't play this season?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Nah, too busy scouting Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes, just in case.
Jason heyward (Atlanta)
Aj, is it time for people to cut bait with me in a standard espn league? I cant hit MLB pitching. What are your thoughts?
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Unless you lose points for K's... it's not that bad is it? I mean slugging still over .430... Don't expect .270 and you won't be disappointed.
Why do you call Adam Jones "DigDug" again? I can't remember.
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Because the Orioles outfielder named Adam Jones is not PacMan.
Who wins AL CY Young?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Obviously, the Angels and Cahill are in the lead right now, but I'm sticking with my preseason pick of Verlander.
Sell high on Shields?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Price is better, despite the record, but James is certainly a possible top-30 fantasy SP. That's not too shabby.
Do you consider the positioning of your trade partner? IE: should I be worried about helping the guy in 2nd place (I'm in first)?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
If the deal helps you, you make it. OK, maybe if we're talking two weeks to go, you don't. But the way I look at it, if you're in a league where trades are plentiful, then one deal with a neighboring club has less impact.
Sam (Hartford, CT)
Maicer Izturis or Jed Lowrie at SS?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I'm having a hard time buying Maicer, especially given his home/road splits.
David (Jackson Hole, Wyoming)
Michael Brantley or Julio Borbon for last UTIL spot ?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Brantley. Quite frankly, I'm missing the big deal about Borbon.
what sort of value does aaron crow have? Will he have a sun 3 or 2 era and a k per inning all year?
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
I like Crow, but unless Soria is traded, we're looking at a No. 30 RP in standard. In a 10-team league, he's barely ownable as a result.
Brad (Cedar Rapids)
A.J, love the work. With the weather playing major factors this year, this is bound to come up some time. Can you tell me if the stats in a game that is rained out before the 6th (or 5th if home is ahead), do those stats count, or would they be erased once the game is PPD?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
If a game is postponed before it becomes official and not to be continued at a later date, then the stats are erased as if they didn't happen. If the game is to be resumed at a later date, then after the game is completed, the stats become official retroactively for the date the game started.
AJ...I just started watching Fringe...it is worth watching all 3 seasons? I'm still looking for a Lost replacement.
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
First few episodes are shaky (though necessary for mythology) but pick up mid-season 1. To me, it is the best current show on the air. Well worth the effort.
Do you have a business card you hand out to people you meet? Does it say "Fantasy Expert" as your job title?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
I am a "Fantasy Analyst" -- I have never claimed to be an expert... I'll leave that to you guys to decide.
Figgins or Aybar the rest of the way (MI position)?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Aybar for me. I would rather have Principal Figgins than Chone these days.
Joe (Bronx, NY)
C'mon AJ, you answer questions about Fringe, but not about the weather for the Cardinals/Cubs game tonight that is airing on ESPN? Some of us need to make fantasy lineup changes. PLEASE??
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
My opinion on Fringe cannot be found too many other places. You, on the other hand, sir, clearly have access to a computer... may I introduce you to the Weather Channel? 60 percent chance of T-storms.
Apparently your business card should also read: "Weatherman."
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
I'd go with "Roker in Training"
Does anyone know of a chat on weather.com that Joe can get in on?
AJ,Is it time to drop Liriano for E. Bedard or Z. Britton?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
I like Britton better, to be sure. Liriano is not *right* but I'm not completely ready to declare him a must cut.
NED NEEDANANSWER (MEXICO)
kelly johnson or Beckham? Kubel or Gardener?
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
In spite of what you might have read about Kelly Johnson earlier in this chat, I like him better than Gordon, and I don't like Gardner at all.
How am I supposed to set a fantast lineup if I do not know the barometric pressure in tonight's game???
Can we finally call Eduardo Sanchez the Cards closer?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
Not with Larussa managing that team... he's going to play patchwork all season.
Do you have the dew point for tonights ATL WAS game?
Al Roker (NYC)
Conor Jackson or Juan Rivera going forward?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Go with Conor if you want to live.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's the whistle, gang. I'd stay longer, but I have to see if the relative humidity is going to rise. I'm on the Twitter... catch me if you can. Until Friday, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
