Wallace Matthews (2:00 PM)
Sorry to be late peeps. Just finishing up a story that contradicts what Joe Girardi said last night and what some ignoramus wrote on ESPNNY.com --OK, the ignoramus was me. Derek Jeter will play tonight against the Indians, acc. to GM Brian Cashman. So the chase goes on. Let's get started right away
Does Jeter get all 4 hits tonight while he's on national televised ESPN for the whole country to watch?
Wallace Matthews (2:01 PM)
Yes. We at ESPN have contracted with Derek Jeter for the exclusive rights to telecast hit No. 3000 tonight from Cleveland. Now, it's up to him to deliver. Only kidding
Michael C. (Westport, CT)
Has Lonn Trost's idea of a $50 per fan surcharge at the gate for games in which Derek Jeter has a chance to get his 3,000th hit been approved?
Wallace Matthews (2:01 PM)
Yes, and will he be sore if Jeter gets 4 hits tonight
Jo Jo B (Bronx)
There was a rumor that Girardi told Cashman he wanted his contract option year picked up immediately or he wasn't getting on the bus. Can you confirm this?
Wallace Matthews (2:02 PM)
the manager never rides the bus. he has one of his lackeys drive him
What should we expect from Phil, does he have it figured out?
Wallace Matthews (2:04 PM)
i don;t know and neither does Phil, but the signs from his last AA start were encouraging. Against minor-leaguers, he hit 95 MPH and got swings and misses, something he was not getting in the big leagues this year, so Hughes is in the stage of not even wanting to know what went wrong. He just wants to leave well enough alone. Of course, we'll all have a better idea bout six hours from now
What do you think happens to Cashman after this season? Will his contract situation have a significant impact on the team's decisions this summer and the beginning of the off-season?
Wallace Matthews (2:06 PM)
That's an excellent question. Sometimes I get the feeling Cashman would welcome the chance to go elsewhere, and other times I think the whole idea is ridiculous. why would you give up the prestige and resources of being the GM of the NY Yankees? But yeah, if his contract negotiations drag on and the Yankees are, in effect, without a GM for any significant length of time this winter, it certainly could affect a lot of things. if nothing else, we'll get to see once again just how good Randy levine is at choosing ballplayers
j.j. mahan (ripley wv)
Do you think that derek jeter is ready to be the main guy on the yankees now that the yankees are ready to win title 28
Wallace Matthews (2:07 PM)
Sir, although his value in the clubhouse remains undiminished, I think Jeter's days of being the "main guy" on the Yankees are over. He certainly is a steadying influnece at shortstop and in the lockerroom, but at bat, he's just another supporting player to the likes of Cano, Teixeira, Granderson and A-Rod
Max (Rockwood, Tn.)
CC did not get selected for one reason. He is a Yankee. If he was still with MILW he would have been a shoo in. What does Price have over CC?
Wallace Matthews (2:09 PM)
I would agree with you, his numbers certainly warrant a selection, but you also must consider this: He is pitching Sunday and therefore not eligible to play on Tuesday. If., as MLB keeps ramming down our thraots, the ASG now "counts" because it determines home-field adv for the WS, doesn;t it make sense to populate the roster with guys who can actually play in the game. Aside from the ego blow, I really don;t think it's all that big a deal. Now David Robertson is another stroy altogether. He should be there.
jen Parrish (tigard oregon)
Hey wally. Good afternoon. Loved your article on derek. How do you love irony of joe resting jeet. CraZY that he will get 3000 vs . same club , that he got his 2722 vs.
Wallace Matthews (2:10 PM)
Hi, Jen. Now it turns out Jeter will play. I just wrote a story about it after Cashman told me on a phone conversation. Obv something changed overnight, or the mgr came to his sense. But the idea of resting jeter tonight made absolutely no sense
Modesto Cedano (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)
Too many pitching options must be a positive but does it hurt the team chemistry?
Wallace Matthews (2:12 PM)
I don't think it does. Most of th eguys in the Yankee clubhouse and realists and professionals. Obv Nova was disappointed by his demotion, but I think he understood, and most of the older guys have been through this before. Baseball teams are going to do what they need to do to win, not to keep guys happy. And frankly, right now, the guys who shoiuld be here are here, I believe. if you don;t send Nova down, who do you ship out? Colon? Garcia? it was a tuf choice but the right one and I think everyone understands
Justin (New York, NY)
Wally, lets kick it off with a Jeter related question (for a change). A recent item in the Yanks Blog stated that had Gardner been leading off all year, tex/arod would've had 35 more runners on base to drive in than they've had with Jeter leading off. How realistic is it that the Yanks Brass / Girardi will approve moving Jeter down in the lineup so a real lead off hitter (Gardner) can lead off?
Wallace Matthews (2:14 PM)
If you're asking will Jeter be moved down now, I say absolutely not. after he reaches 3,000 hits, maybe. But where do you move him to? Second? Then where does Granderson go? Some inside the org think Jeter should be hitting 7th. But how do you convince him to accept that gracefully? These are tough calls that are going to have to be made but I don;t think any of it happens until the celebrations of 3K are over.
Do the Yankees try to acquire a LOOGY during the season, and if so, who is that LeftyOneOutGuY?
Wallace Matthews (2:15 PM)
I think you;ve invented a useful new acronym for all of us. I love it. And I'm sorry, I don;t have an answer for you right now. But I know who it won;t be. Boone Logan.
when is this starting
Wallace Matthews (2:15 PM)
19 minutes ago. Catch up
What's the deal with Chavez? Is it even worth wasting the time to rehab him, or should the Yanks be looking elsewhere for a bench player with pop?
Wallace Matthews (2:17 PM)
I don;t know. it seems like it's been one thing after another with him, which considering his hostory now seems ridiculously obvious. But after the spring he had, and the start of the regular season, it was fun to imagine that all that was behind him. Right now, I think the Yankees bench is adequate with Nunez and Jones but yeah, the equivalent of a healthy Chavez would be a great addition.
If Jeter gets 3 hits tonight, the Yanks have exploded on offense, will Girardi sit Jeter down before his next at bat so he can get #3000 at home?
Wallace Matthews (2:18 PM)
I would say yes, but I left the park last night convinced Jeter would not play tonight, so what do I know? That would seem to make sense, however, and also take a ton of pressure of Jeter for the last weekend before the ASB
jen Parrish (in sunny tigard oregon)
Good afternoon. Whats your favorite part of your job. How have you been?
Wallace Matthews (2:19 PM)
HI Jen. I have been fine, thank you. I hope yuou have been too. Miss you on Twitter but unfortunately, a handful of mean-spirited, cowardly people ruin the experience for everyone else. Anyway, my favorite part of the job is the three hours or so when they are actually playing baseball. The rest of it I can live without. Be well
What kind of moves, if any, do you think the Yankees will make before the trading deadline is up?
Wallace Matthews (2:21 PM)
I think a lot depends on how the injured bullpen guys come back, esp. Soriano. If he comes back then maybe they don; tneed to shop for relief help, altho somone who can get lefties out late in a game would be nice. I also think they could use one more bat off the bench since it seems as if Chavez is going to follow in the limping footsteps of dear old Nick Johnson. Otherwise, I think they're in pretty good shape
Jeff (Atlanta, GA)
Why would the Yankees demote Ivan Nova? He seemed to have been pitching pretty well? Is it because guys like Colon and Garcia are out of options?
Wallace Matthews (2:23 PM)
Yes, and because the felt Nova would benefit more from additional seasoning in the minors. Let's face it, freddy and bartolo don;t have futures, they have presents. They are pitching well now, so the Yankees want to keep benefiting from that. At 24, Nova can only improve. he will be back, I'm sure, and maybe better than he was before
How many starts do they give Hughes before the start thinking about re-calling Nova?
Wallace Matthews (2:23 PM)
Ask me about 10 pm tonight
Why do you need to convince Jeter of anything. Just tell him it's for the good of the team. Shouldn't the "captain" agree with a smile to something that everyone says is for the good of the team?
Wallace Matthews (2:25 PM)
Theoretically, yes. But we are dealing with a human being here, a very proud and stubborn guy who in spite of his claim last night surely does have an ego. That "captain" thing is just a title. Like most of us, Derek Jeter is concerned with his own interests before any others.
Sebastian (Austin, TX )
Why does the media misrepresent Jeter's feelings about batting leadoff? They say he is holding onto it like the last beer at a party, but I don't see it that way. I see Girard's perogative, and Jeter is just batting where his name falls, am I correct? Has this been ownblown?
Wallace Matthews (2:27 PM)
i don;t know which "media" you are referring to, and we don;lt know what precisely is being said behind closed doors with Jeter, Girardi, Cashman, etc. But Girardi is a numbers guy and the numbers don;t lie. they say Gardner is a better option at leadoff. So one can only assume Jeter is still there because he wants to be, or Girardi thinks he does. And to answer your last question, I think all lineup "issues" are to some extent overblown
I luv Jeter, but age might b catching him, is it time to take a shot at Reyes. they would have a good shot at landing him since everyone wants to play for the Yanks
Wallace Matthews (2:28 PM)
only problem there is you still owe Jeter $34 mil for next two seasons, and where do yu put him? even the Yankees have their limits, I believe
Wallace Matthews (2:28 PM)
Sorry guys, got to run. Thanks for all the great questions, enjoy the all-star game and well do this again next week
