Would the Mavs be interested in getting rid of Shawn Marion's contract by trading him to the Bobcats for a deal including Boris Diaw's expiring contract?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:03 PM)
Hi. Hope everyone enjoyed the ring ceremony last night. The final tribute to an amazing year. like the Miami game, the mavs made that part of the night the best part of the night, as Minnesota showed, again, why, if they ever get all their people together, they're going to be a handful. On to the questions...
Chuck Cooperstein (12:04 PM)
Kahn asked if the Mavs would be interested in trading Marion for the Boris Diaw expiring contract in Charlotte. The answer: Have you seen the way Trix has been playing? He's invaluable. he's not going anywhere.
i just read one of the espn dallas commentators suggest that dirk is niether in game shape nor particularly emotionally engaged at the moment. is this true? if so, how is this excusable? if it is true at what point is cuban justified in saying that he's paying dirk to be in shape and engaged and dirk ain't holding up his end of contract?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:08 PM)
Clearly Dirk isn't in the kind of shape the Mavs want or need him to be in. Although as we talked about last week its hard to believe that Dirk was saying last week how his legs WERE getting better even if there weren't results, and that he was better than he was at the beginning of the season when there actually WERE some results. And given everything that Dirk has given Mark and this franchise, the conversation you want him to have is NOT going to happen
What should the Mavs do with Odom?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:12 PM)
I think that Carlisle should exactly what he's doing. Start him. Give him a chance to get things rolling like he did in NO and if he's not doing what he's supposed to do, get him out of there, like he did in the first half vs Phoenix and the second half last night. I think the players need to have a heart to heart with him. I think this is where the team misses Chandler the most. Chandler would have found the right thing to say and the tone to say it to get things moving. By nature, Dirk, JET and Kidd aren't those types. But someone, peer-to peer is going to have to say something to get this out of the rut it's in
Why not start Ian Mahinmi and have Haywood back him up?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:14 PM)
I think the center combo and the manner in which its used, right now is the least of the Mavs worries. Haywood is playing exceptionally well. And Mahinmi gives the team a really nice boost coming off the bench. In addition, Haywood has shown himself to be better as a starter. You don't see him in the funk he was in for a lot of last year.
Would the Mavs make movse to trade Haywood or Marion if the team is not looking good close to the trade deadline? Mavs need to move these two contracts (or amnesty one of them) in order to sign both Deron Williams and Dwight Howard.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:15 PM)
I think they would do that, but since I believe your question to be nothing in the realm of possibility, I wouldn't fret too much over it
Any way that the Mavs make a play for Nash?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:15 PM)
Chuck Cooperstein (12:18 PM)
He still has the quick hands, four games of 4+ steals, but the assist to turnover ratio isn't very good by his standard. And his letting Billups get free at the end of the Clippers game when the whole world knew he was the most dangerous guy in the floor was really bad. But like everyone else on this team you just have to let this thing marinate and hope that it's all together in April
chan (denver, co)
Coop, I think the mavs need to start playing the heck out of these young guys, mahimi, dojo, and roddy b. See if we can pump up there trade value. I would also like to see Wright get more minutes than Odom. We all know this is Odom's last year, and next year Wright is a club option.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:21 PM)
Mahinmi is already a top eight rotation guy and Roddy is getting more minutes as well. I would like to see more of Wright, I love his activity. Unfortunately for Jones, there just aren't enough minutes, but I'm a fan of his, and i think they are too, but he's not going to take PG minutes from Kidd, Roddy, and West, and he's not going to take SG minutes way from West and JET
Michael (Tyler, TX)
With Odom's struggles, why not ship him out for Deron Williams along with Trade Exceptions Jones West and Picks. This allows Kidd to move to the 2 and we get better production at the 1 with Kidds struggles and frees up space for the summer still. Maybe add Haywood to the deal if they add Lopez and whatever pieces they want to unload as long as they are expiring pieces
Chuck Cooperstein (12:22 PM)
Cmon, Trash for treasure. You better give me something better than that to work with
Why hasnt the Mav's tanking this year been considered? Wouldnt a lottery pick combined with Dirk and Cuban be more attractive to D12 & Dwill than a first round playoff exit with a bad pick?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:25 PM)
Because there is nothing to suggest that tanking will get you anywhere, and you still have to be lucky enough in the lottery to get where and what you want. I'm from the give me the best team I can have every year and I'll take my chances with that. I don't want to go backwards. Mark Cuban doesn't want to either. He's trying to keep it together while they move forward.
are the mavs capable in making a transition to winning there games at home?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:26 PM)
They had just won seven straight by an average of 17 points before last night. They're 7-3 at home so far. I'd say they're doing OK at AAC, and in fact are playing better at home than they are on the road which is the opposite of what it's been for the last two years
Shane (Decatur )
Ben and skin suggested giving Odom a week off to decide where he wants to go in life. I like the idea, but what do you think about it?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:27 PM)
I don't think I'd be against that idea, but I think a better option is for the player leaders of this team to read him the riot act and tell him that this isn't going to fly here.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:30 PM)
I can't believe how many questions I have seen in the queue today questioning Dirk's hunger. This is along the lines of the qustioning for years whether Dirk had it in him to win a title. Dirk plays to win. always has and always will. The moment he doesn't have that is the moment he walks away. I don't think he will allow himself to be a ceremonial player, thus his motivation should be the very least of your concerns right now
Chuck Cooperstein (12:32 PM)
I'm not as high on Yi as I am on Wright. I'd like to see if they can find a way to shoehorn some minutes for him.
Austin (Fort Worth)
Thank You Coop for pointing out Dirk's drive and determination. People complain for years that he can't do it, that he does not have the heart. He wins a championship and people still think it.....Mavs fans need to get off Dirk!
Chuck Cooperstein (12:33 PM)
Jarad (Ft Worth)
Mavs are (were before last night) 4th in the league on defense. Are the wolves just a team to be feared from now on?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:36 PM)
They have two players who have the ability to be transcendent in Love and Rubio. If they ever get their whole team healthy they are going to be a load. Add in one of the best coaches in the game in Rick Adelman and people should be filling the Target Center every night to see these guys, not to mention not the one or two nights they hit your town when they play away from home. They are fun to watch
KB (Office )
Coop hey do you think the mavs (plays) are getting to predictable? With the two gaurd running and handing the ball off set a screen for dirk and he having the option to do as he wants. We have seen more times than no This Year that the back pass is getting picked off alot. any changes coming or will we see the same old plays??
Chuck Cooperstein (12:37 PM)
Nope. Everyone knows what everyone does. It's how you execute it that counts, and actually, the mavs look like they're executing everything except the shot.
JJ Barea (Minnesota)
I miss you bro
Chuck Cooperstein (12:37 PM)
Dude we all miss you. It was great to see you last night. Hope you enjoyed the baby rattle in your locker
Where am I, and why am I not in Dallas?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:38 PM)
That's a very good question.
James (Fort Worth)
Can enough be said about the play of Shawn Marion? Most complete player on the team.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:39 PM)
He has been fabulous. He's always D's up on the toughest cover and his offense is now old time Phoenix like. Whether it's the threat of being traded or amnestied that has him playing like this, I hope we see all of this all season long
Shawn Jacob (Carrollton, TX)
Will Rick Carlisle consider shutting Lamar Odom down as he did with Dirk?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:41 PM)
Don't think so since he has already embarked on an aggressive program to get him in better shape. Plus, he really needs to play with his new team. And needs to play better
Chuck Cooperstein (12:43 PM)
That'll do it for today. Got to run to get ready for the radio show with my man Nate. Thanks for checking in. We'll do it again next week
