Jesse Rogers (3:34 PM)
Hi all. Welcome to our weekly chat. Im in Edmonton for the game tonight. Nice weather here. Best in yrs they say. About 38-40 degrees. Im in the lounge at the Hawks hotel. They;re finishing up their pregame meal and then will take their aft nap. Both teams skated this morning and we're ready for some feb hockey. Fire away with questions!
Joe (Oak Forest)
When do you think the hawks will add another defense man?
Jesse Rogers (3:36 PM)
Simply impossible to know. By Feb. 27. Timing of Morrison deal, for example, had some randomness to it..Calgary waited until they got some injured bodies back and had a full lineup..then dealt him. So every team is differnt and timing can be any time. I still think it will be closer to the deadline but that can change at any time. They WILL get somebody.
Can you explain to me why everyone is so down on Frolik? I understand bigger salary and people like to see more scoring BUT he brings to every game what the Hawks need..energy and solid defense. Bad move if we trade him...
Jesse Rogers (3:38 PM)
Obviously Q agrees with "everyone" more than you do. He was sat out behind 5 rookies and now is getting 4th line min while a 20 and 21 yesr old play ahead of him on the important 3rd line with bolland...You tell me. Who "does" more out there, Kruger and Shaw or Frolik...The answer is the first two.
Blackhawks Roy (TINLEY PARK)
I've been listening to sports radio this morning and as usual, everyone seems to be panicking. I understand the Hawks first period effort wasn't the greatest, but can't that be expected after the long break they took? They're getting healthier, and i expect Bowman to make at least one more move (possibly for a DMAN). Can you please help everyone relax!!
Jesse Rogers (3:41 PM)
People are nuts and no reg host on sportsradio has any clue what they're talking about.Forget about your reasoning, though, both teams were coming off a break. There are ebbs and flows to every game..the hawks dominated the 2nd period. Game could have gone either way and in my opinion the hawks outplayed them overall despite losing..Point is, if you want to panic dont do it after that effort..and we can make a case saying Morrison/Sharp/Toews all had reasons not to be their best, etc. and the Hawks still played fine. They do need help on D, that hasnt changed but last game was fine...
Why haven't the Blackhawks traded for Tuomo Ruutu? Seems like a good fit, played here before, has some grit, can score a little & on a bad team. Hawks seem to have alot of good younger players so do they stand pat here or make one more move?
Jesse Rogers (3:43 PM)
Either 1) the canes arent ready to trade him or 2) the price is too high or 3)they dont think he's the playmaker they want with hossa at his price...I gather it's No. 2 ..Its not like they are desperate and have to mortgage the farm right now to get him...I imagine they'll see how Morrison works out but Ruutu could go at any time. He will be traded
Do you see this wrist injury as something that really slows Sharp down for the rest of the season, or should we expect his production to return once he has a chance to shake off the rust.
Jesse Rogers (3:44 PM)
Tough call. Lets see after he shakes off the rust. I talked to him today as well as Morriosn and they said the same thing..Need one game just to get that feeling back so should be better tonight...but I dont think it will affect him too much..
Jess,Do you think Q changes lines way too much? Seems like alot of teams will tinker here and there with lines but also try to keep same guys playing intact so players can get use to one another as to where they'll be on the ice.. What do you think?
Jesse Rogers (3:46 PM)
Tough call. Ive seen many coaches change things up..he prob does it more..I also think he CAN do it because they have some interchangeale parts...1-9 has talent to be mixed and matched..Stalberg is a good example
I noticed that Keith and Seabrook have been on the ice allowing goals at the end of the games, including in Vancouver. Why haven't they been split up and when can we expect help on D?
Jesse Rogers (3:49 PM)
Because they are still the best option in those situations...they played well against the sedins..van people were wondering if they had dressed for the game until overtime...its hard to keep them off the board for 65 minutes and they failed at the worst time...it would look a lot worse if Leddy or someone else was out there...
Dave (Boston, MA)
Maybe it's impatience or being a BC guy, but I feel like Hayes is a better fit for the Hawks right now than Bickell or Frolik. At least Hayes has some confidence in his game...
Jesse Rogers (3:51 PM)
He is..but contracts dictate things..Q admitted that the other day...bottom line is those players have to clear waivers, Hayes does not...again, if the hawks were in a more desperate situation it might be different
Brett (Granger, IN)
I'm not a John Scott hater, I understand his role on this team and I understood him in the lineup as insurance against the canucks, but in the lineup against the speedy Oilers??? Say it isn't so Jesse, why???
Jesse Rogers (3:55 PM)
He is..and tried pasting a Q and A with Quenneville about it from this morn but I cant..he basically keeps saying the same thing..he likes his game but score and flow of the game dictates his time on ice..prob is it adds min to keith, etc when scott only plays 5 min..not really clear answers from Q on it
Brett (Granger, IN)
Very much enjoy your work with the Hawks Jesse! I wanted to ask you how comfortable Morrison has been looking in practice and does Q plan on trying to keep him in that 2C position for awhile? Thanks!
Jesse Rogers (3:56 PM)
For now he does..I think he gets a chance like Andrew Brunette did and if he cant hack it then he'll move down and kruger will go back in that spot..cant tell you how long exactly but enough to know for sure either way
James M (PA)
It seems that there aren't many genuine 2nd line dmen available, especially of the sort that Chicago needs (physical, crease clearing dmen with decent skill). It seems that, especially given the fact that everyone knows how important such a piece would be for Chicago's Cup contention, the price will be astronomical. Should fans prepare themselves for another Montador-like gamble, rather than a more sure player?
Jesse Rogers (3:58 PM)
Probably or someone simply better than O'donnel/scott/lepisto..they will start with that and hope for more
Everyone but CBJ is hot in the central. Will they beat each other up here in the last 30 prior to the playoffs? Think the wear and tear will be an advantage or disadvantage come April and May?
Jesse Rogers (4:00 PM)
Probably neither...I guess playing good Competition should get them ready more say than Van who doesnt have a tough team in its division but Im not sure that matters much...not with veteran laden teams that have playoff experience
Mike (Park Ridge)
Recently, Carolina GM Jim Rutherford implied that teams would have to pay a significant price to aquire Tuomo Ruutu. I know the hawks were at one point at least exploring the option of bringing him back. Will Stan Bowman be willing to part with a Top Prospect and a first round pick for him, or is the price too steep?
Jesse Rogers (4:01 PM)
Thats the big question. I think if Morrison doesnt work out and we get closer to the deadline, Bowman would do it. Morin and a 1st or 2nd? why not.
Jesse, with the addition of Morisson I don't see rom for another forward on the roster unless we send one the other way. Do you see Bowman focusing all his attention on a top 4 d men at this point?
Jesse Rogers (4:02 PM)
No, not all. You can do things simultaneously. If they need a forward and get one they'll fig out the roster stuff.
Jesse Rogers (4:04 PM)
A lot of questions about trades...Summing up again...they will look to get the best d-man they can...at very least they will get a 5 or 6 that is better than what they have..a forward is still in the mix espcially if morrison doesnt work out..so its all still up in the air and in play..I think Campoli would be a good fit again..
Don (Columbus, OH)
Hey Jesse- I know you have mentioned Q having a longer leash on Crow, but Emery has been solid all year. Why not go back to him to see if we can catch lightning in a bottle again?
Jesse Rogers (4:05 PM)
Probably will happen again at some point...Im sure he'll play tomorrow..we'll see after that
Bickell has been a disappointment all year. Is he going to be traded? what do you see happening with him
Jesse Rogers (4:07 PM)
AS ive said and written before he's just a throw in for a team that is willing to take a flier on him since he makes very little. he wont hurt anyone's cap. I cant tell you if he'll be traded but if roster spots have to be cleared, etc he certainly is a candidate...obviously, he's fallen behind others and his future here is in doubt
Jonathan V. (Savannah,GA)
Jesse, it seems like the Hawks' trade for Morrison was an effort to give the player one shot to see if he could be a cheap center solution for down the stretch. If he's not the answer do think a guy like Frans Nielson could be in play? He is a big time shot blocking forward who sees a lot of special teams time on two units for the Islanders that are both ranked in the top ten in the league.
Jesse Rogers (4:07 PM)
I like Nielsen so I'll say yes but I can see a lot of teams liking him...but yes, he should be on the list
what d man do you see the hawks pursing, and what do you think think the Hawks will have to give up?
Jesse Rogers (4:09 PM)
Schultz on wash, campoli as I said, maybe allen on carolina, there is a few. There are others...we are talking an ok prospect for any of them..I dont think it would be the Hawks best but 2nd tier types and/or draft picks..here is the real question..do you trade Saad for that big final piece..for a rental? that would be a tough call..
Hi Jesse, Do you think Bowman pulled the trigger on the Morrison deal to give the team a psychological boost before the road trip?
Jesse Rogers (4:10 PM)
No. It doesnt work that way. Pulled the deal cause Calgary was ready to do it. Simple as that
Are the Hawks not coachable? I don't know what else to think when the same patterns of taking periods off and making amateur mistakes continue.
Jesse Rogers (4:12 PM)
Again, at 29-15-7 hard to say they;re not anything..and does that mean Van isnt coachable cause they took the 2nd off? We have to stop with this small picture thinking as well as remember there is another team on the ice..the hawks have a flaw..most teams have at least one, even the good ones...prob is the hawks flaw could really cost them down the line but from game to game we need to calm down
Keith was a monster against Vancouver. Sign of things to come? He looked like the 2009 Keith, despite the minus rating.
Jesse Rogers (4:13 PM)
Yeah I think it might be a sign. I wrote about him yesterday in my blog. Check it out. He and seabrook are really gearing up for the final push and playoffs...I really liked his game, not that it was perfect but his style was what we need to see
Jesse Rogers (4:13 PM)
Watch a vid Eddie O and I did..will be up soon. He talks about Keith. real good stuff
Marian Hossa: in his prime? post-prime? in between prime and post-prime? or, dare i say, PRE-PRIME?!?!?
Jesse Rogers (4:14 PM)
Dont know what word I would use excpet BEAST.
Corey Crawford is good, but he will not lead us to the promised land. He's not good ENOUGH. Your thoughts.
Jesse Rogers (4:15 PM)
Pretty sure people said similiar about Niemi in feb or march..they werent sure..I cant go there just yet..that's a pretty blanket statement...he proved something last playoffs, he deserves another shot or at least a while here to prove he's ready or not...bottom line, he's no turco or huet so no way we can say for sure one way or another
Which rookies do you see sticking around for the playoffs?
Jesse Rogers (4:17 PM)
I think there is a good chance we're seeing the two that will be there...both kruger and shaw have one thing in common that Q is willing to trust them: hockey smarts...and that includes defensively sound..huge that they were checking the sedins with bolland and froli, etc. so those two unless Shaw in particular hits a wall but dont see it yet
Jesse Rogers (4:17 PM)
and not frolik I meant
Sure the Hawks lost in OT to Vanc. Its 4 on 4 and typically anything goes. Last two years the team that knocked out VC punished them throughout the series (Hawks and Bruins). We need a Sopel type PK D-Man who eats rubber and a bruising D Man paired with HJ. Offense is not the problem, keeping the puck out of the net is.
Jesse Rogers (4:19 PM)
I have a problem with some forwards as much as anything..they dont block shots either and arent always helping the way they should be...other than hossa and toews, there are some "fly-bys" in thier own zone and that includes stalberg some, so it's a team thing but yes, around the net still needs some tightening for sure
Jose Rogers (Chicago)
Jesse, if you're going to give up Morin and a 1st or 2nd I'd like to think you can get a better player than Ruutu.....You're probably closer to Jeff Carter (not that his contract works for the hawks but just an example).
Jesse Rogers (4:21 PM)
Carter will cost more...the person that asked the question quoted rutherford saying it would take a lot to get him...a lot is a good prospect and draft pick right? jeff carter is in the prime of his career and signed...you think if he was traded in the offseason it would be for one lousy prospect and a pick? no way.
Hawks players have been quoted as saying that down the stretch each game is going to have a playoff atmosphere, does that mean we'll see the Hawks finishing some checks? Seems like too much finesse not enough grit, thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (4:23 PM)
I dont know. Its not their style to have a punishing forecheck..its just not their game..if the check will create a turnover IM all for it. Personally I think that stuff is overblown..many nights the hawks have the puck more than their opponent so that doesnt allow for as many hits..and they have won a lot of games over the past few years getting outhit..some games it plays a part but not as many these days..
Jesse, how about Kubina and Nate Thompson from Tampa? big solid Dman with an expiring contract, and a nice pk/4th line guy?
Jesse Rogers (4:24 PM)
Not a bad call. I had not thought about Kubina and havent seen his game much this year. Will put him on my radar!
Steve (St. Louis)
Did you ever get the scoop on why things fell apart with Campoli in such an abrupt manner this past summer? It seemed to be something more than merely he wanted a bigger payday than the Hawks were willing to give.
Jesse Rogers (4:25 PM)
No it was definitely that. I saw his agent at the draft and he thought things were going to go smooth at that time..I truly think signing Montador changed things..they wanted money in that ballpark
Kilmer (Park Ridge, IL)
Jesse - love the chats. Can you speak to the reason for the difference in Bickell's play this year. Is it due to a lack of effort or something else, like the wrist bothering him? If effort, I'd assume that the coaching staff would be all over him - is this true for him, or anyone else?
Jesse Rogers (4:28 PM)
I think its complicated..I compare it to a singles hitter that all of a suddne hits a few homers and thinks he's a slugger...mentally it changes your game..Bickell scored a bunch of goals from the oustide with that wrist shot last year..so of course that's what he thinks he can do again...he needs to go the net and be a force like shaw has been at a much smaller size..its def mental..and now im sure his confidence is shot
Hey Jesse great work and thnaks for the chat....Who do you think is under performing as of now? And if that player steps up does it turn things around?
Jesse Rogers (4:30 PM)
Hmm, thats a tough one. Kane is the easy answer up front and I know this will spark a debate but I think Crawford can be a little bit better and it will make a HUGE difference..not saying the D overall could be better but other teams will get chances...if Craw can see it he needs to stop it..I did an audio interview with Emery about some of this stuff today..you can listen in my blog
Mike (Oak Lawn)
Do you think the word is getting out on Shaw around the league? It seemed like Vancouver was paying some special attention to him.
Jesse Rogers (4:31 PM)
Of course its getting out but I didnt see his game change much..I did joke with him today that #shawfacts would die out if he didnt start scoring again...he said "I know."
On a scale of 1-10, what are the odds the 'Hawks pull a blockbuster that no one expects?
Jesse Rogers (4:33 PM)
Boy, great question..I'll say this IF they pull a blockbuster it will be one no one expects because they are the best at keeping things quiet. The absolute best in the league. Leddy, Boytnon, campoli, Morrison all came out of nowhere..I never heard those names ahead of time...now, whether they do it or not, that is really tough for me to guess..I think they WOULD if its presented to them..so I will go with 6 out of 10?
Jesse, can you once and for all refute the Tim Thomas/Ryan Miller trade rumors?
Jesse Rogers (4:33 PM)
Haha. You just did. People are really dumb to believe and/or report that stuff. Really dumb
Good Call Jessee, Back Checking seems to be a major problem also. When the F commit to backchecking, its typically a great night of hockey to watch. See you in Denver soon!!! We are expecting up to 2 ft here.
Jesse Rogers (4:34 PM)
I feel like a broken a record but day before thanksgiving in SJ was the best example of it. The very best. After that 9-2 loss to edm. Thats what backchecking is all about..however it prob cost them on offense cause they got shut out..but niemi was great that night so they prob did have enough chances
The way the Hawks skated against Vancouver is SO much better than how they played against Nashville. Would you rather see a Hawks/Preds first round or Hawks/Nucks first round?
Jesse Rogers (4:36 PM)
I think they win both series..Nash will take a little more out of them but I stil dont think they beat the hawks 4 out of 7...Van would prob be easier for sure..watch, van will go out early and McTavish will take over
Do you ever go out with the guys on the road or do they stay far away from the media on their own time?
Jesse Rogers (4:38 PM)
Different schedules but a lot of time will run into them cause we're all in the same area, etc. Like here in edmonton, small city..saw a few last night..here is a good one..someone bought me and a couple guys a shot. looked harmless but it was a set-up..tobasco sauce. my tounge is still on fire. need to find out who. sharp...??
Jesse - Do the Hawks make a play for Ryan Suter? We seem to have what the Preds are looking for in young players.
Jesse Rogers (4:40 PM)
Can I just say for the last time..forgetting everything else, with the amount of teams that would line up for him do you really think the preds would trade him in the division? I guess if the packages was like 100% better than anyone else, maybe. I cant see them trading him if they are this good come end of feb anyway..so NO ON SUTER. They would be crucified in nash. and I say that knowing in pro sports anything is possible. thats my out in case the stars aline but no way.
Jesse-How does Nick Leddy have no power play goals when he was a regular early in the season on the power play?
Jesse Rogers (4:42 PM)
How does the D in general have so few, not just leddy? They dont have a natural back there..seabrook is as close to a real shooter that they have but he is far from shea weber or det. guys..at least on pp..thats a weakness and could be the specialist type they might look for via trade
Mike (Lincoln Park)
Any chance we see a return of Adam Burrish this season?
Jesse Rogers (4:43 PM)
I think it would be great but I dont know...suppose its possible, just dont see it for some reason
Andy (Los Angeles)
Sami Lepisto...Finnish Olympian...+53 in 125 AHL games and 24 in 160 NHL tilts...Why not him at 6th D?
Jesse Rogers (4:44 PM)
I just dont think Q trusts him...AS much as people rag on scott or odonnell,..they are rarely burned cause of decision making..I think that's where lepisto has his issue with Q and coaches but that doesnt mean they are right..we really havent seen enough
Mark (Shanghai, China)
Jesse,Stalberg seems extremely motivated out there. Obviously the tying goal against Van was direct result of his turnover at the offensive blueline but that aside He seems to have bought in and FINALLY turned on his superhuman jets and I see him as someone that is top 6 for a few years to come. Any thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (4:46 PM)
It's getting there, no doubt. Def moving in the right direction..get him a little more def responsible..find other ways to score besides speed and yes..I STILL think he could end up on 3rd line in playoffs but Im thinking that less and less when hes with 19 and 88..chemistry pretty good there for sure..thought he and hossa were best two forwards against Van. Liked that 3rd line as well.
why not get Sheldon Souray? he would solve the problem of PP point shot, and he would give them a decent #4 dman with size. also has low contract expiring
Jesse Rogers (4:47 PM)
I like him .Was impressive against the hawks. Is he on the move?
Adam (New York)
Do the coaches get on Kane when he's drifting from the D zone looking to break out before Hawks have the puck? His defense is so bad. I hope they make him feel bad when watching film so he changes.
Jesse Rogers (4:49 PM)
Yes and no. Obviously he cant do it to the detriment of the team shift in and shift out but mostly they just let him do his thing...Bad comparison but Gretzky didnt play much D...point is if he IS doing his thing which is producing points they dont care about the rest..problem is when he;s not prodcuing he doesnt have much else to his game..however, his passing never slumps so at least thats there...AND I WASNT COMPARING KANE TO GRETZKY just trying to make a point
Jesse Rogers (4:52 PM)
Thats going to do it for today. Thanks for the questions. Check out my blog for new stuff from this morn skate including interview with eddie O and Ray Emery...and of course postgame tonight as well. Follow me on twitter @espnchihawks for the latest. Talk to ya next week...prob on wed. again, great questions. love talking hawks with ya. enjoy the game tonight
