Stephania Bell (11:04 AM)
Happy Friday everyone! Get ready to beat the heat! Some guys nearing a return from loooong absences...let's see who's on your collective minds.
Stephania, picked up Ellsbury off the wire... Can we expect him back after the ASG and how soon? Will he be limited?
Stephania Bell (11:08 AM)
Mark: Well, the rehab clock will start ticking today (20 days) - so that's the time frame. It can always be stopped if there are issues but as for now, that's when they expect him. Can't answer whether he'll be limited because we haven't seen him TRY certain things yet, like fielding overhead or making defensive plays. I think it's a bit risky until we know he can do these things.
Ehtier -- how bad is this? Traded for him minutes before he left the game...
Stephania Bell (11:09 AM)
Eric: Apparently not as bad as it could have been. Dodgers not placing him on the DL which suggests that MRI showed nothing serious since most obliques are multiple weeks. They're hoping he can try swinging a bat again soon and if it doesn't hurt, then it could be just a few days.
Hey "Starphania"! What's the latest on CCrawford? thanks
Stephania Bell (11:12 AM)
Fitzy: Crawford has played in 3 rehab games, two of which he's played in the field. So far, so good - but the big test will come when he has to hurl a ball in from the outfield and really test that elbow. He's still got time - and they'll give him (I would think) the bulk of those 20 reahb days since he hasn't played all year.
Brian (Portland, ME)
Chris Carpenter's been throwing a baseball! Any thoughts on his chances of coming back productive this year, or even long term for my NL keeper league?
Stephania Bell (11:15 AM)
Brian: I'm sorry. I see you haven't seen the news. He WAS throwing a baseball but then there were more problems. He is again feeling better (at least somewhat) but it sounds like he is still going to see another specialist about some of the persistent weakness in his shoulder. I'm not holding out tons of hope for this year - even if he comes back, I'm going to be concerned that this will be an ongoing issue. WOuldn't drop him from keeper...yet.
Noble (Courtenay, British Columbia)
Any word on Shaun Marcum.... extended DL stint ahead?
Stephania Bell (11:17 AM)
Noble: Yes, it will be extended somewhat it appears but how much not yet clear. He won't be starting Saturday as originally hoped. But he did have a throwing session Tuesday which apparently went pretty well. Each outing will be a test.
Any update on Kemp? Heard he could be out until Aug now not just the all star break.
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Kevin: I don't think it will be August. But consider that they will want him to play in more rehab games this go round than he did last time. Provides more situational testing for his hamstring. So if he can get in a week of a rehab assignment or thereabouts...would put him back in mid -third week of July.
Steffie! Should we be worried about Panda's lacking power since returning? It came back last year... should it again?
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Dave: It absolutely should come back. I'm not worried at this point.
What's the latest on Bonifacio? I scooped him up in all of my leagues.
Stephania Bell (11:22 AM)
Emilio: Apparently they still hope for him to return after AS Break (as in shortly after). He's been hitting off a tee, prob rehab assignment within couple weeks.
Jeff (Portland, ME)
What is your take on Tulo? The earliest he could come back? Our league does not have any DL spots and I own both Kemp and Tulo. They are taking up roster important roster spots, but it will be worth it if they can come back before season end.
Stephania Bell (11:25 AM)
Jeff: Too early to discuss any progress as he's still just in the rest and early recovery phase. But the soonest to expect him would probably be 6 weeks, if all goes smoothly.
What's the timetable on Morrow's recovery? I read that he could be back shortly after the All Star Break but other reports are saying mid-August. If he feels fine why would an oblique sideline him for so long?
Stephania Bell (11:28 AM)
Tyler: That is precisely the issue with obliques. A guy can feel fine at rest or even doing light stuff and then he either throws hard or swings the bat hard and goes backward. They will move him along slowly and progress based on how he feels. Sounds like they're giving him extra cushion but it will be at least 5 weeks.
Dan (Rochester, New York)
Will Drew Storen be ready after the ASG and do you think he will jump right back into the closer role even though Clippard is dominating?
Stephania Bell (11:32 AM)
Dan: I think it will be shortly after AS Break, but I'm not thinking they hand him the closer role. Hints already that he comes back as setup guy. And why move him before he's shown that he can perform well, no issues and while Clippard is doing what he's doing? Think they'll then play it by ear.
Hey Stephania...when can we expect Dempster back?
Stephania Bell (11:33 AM)
John: July6-8 series according to ESPN Chicago. looks like the rest has done his lat quite a bit of good and that he's feeling much better.
With Berkman being moved back to STL for his rehab, how long until we see him back in action?
Stephania Bell (11:35 AM)
Bryan: No one knows that answer just yet because the team hasn't really seen him. Part of the benefit of him rejoining the club is then they can assess how he's progressing and evaluate what his timetable will be. Hopefully we'll get a better idea over the next week.
Hey Stephania....any word on Capps? thnx
Stephania Bell (11:37 AM)
David: Still very early on him. MRI showed nothing specific per the team other than inflammation and he had a cortisone shot. Program generally is to rest a few days then try to resume a throwing schedule and see how it goes. Team seemed to hint not much longer than the DL time but we never know until guys pick up the ball again whether that's reasonable.
When can we expect Utley to play every day?
Stephania Bell (11:38 AM)
Jared: Manuel said he'd be two off, one on until the AS Break. But after that he could progress to daily. Of course no one can say what will happen as he tries to press the workload. It will be a fingers crossed period for a while once he moves to every day and you know the Phillies (and Utley) - once he gets there, hard to scale back.
Stephania, what's the latest news on Longoria? He tried coming back but pulled himself out and now there seems to be no word on what's happening with him. Any insight?
Stephania Bell (11:40 AM)
Eric: No baseball activities yet. Not clear when he'll begin, maybe next week(?) One of the challenges after a setback like he had is that guys lose confidence in their leg and returning them to full speed and incorporating sport-specific stuff gets trickier. No timetable for the Rays - they probably do not want to set one, other than perhaps internally - to take any additional pressure off of him.
Jon A (Grimesland, NC)
Do you foresee any setbacks when Colby Lewis returns?
Stephania Bell (11:43 AM)
Jon A: Seeing as he avoided the DL and says he's experienced this forearm tightness before. I'm not inclined to be overly worried. Team expects him back shortly after AS Break. Guess we'll find out but he's made a good case as to why it's not a big deal.
I can't find anything on Frank Francisco. Is he going to be shelved for a while?
Stephania Bell (11:44 AM)
Steve: Yep. Plan on it. Pitcher on DL with oblique strain usually translates to approximately four to six weeks. Occasionally less, but not often.
Any word on Bailey's little setback the other day? Real world and fantasy, I could really use some good news...
Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
Brian: Forearm tightness is what they're calling it. Not a huge surprise after thumb surgery. Not terrible in terms of what it could be but just a matter of how long it takes to settle and resume program. He had been throwing from a mound, now will go back to flat ground before he resumes the downhill stuff. And it becomes one day at a time.
Morning Stephania!!!! Nick Markasis is on waivers and can use the depth, how is he coming along? Should he back to his old self soon??
Stephania Bell (11:49 AM)
Tom: Good morning! The issue apparently is the healing of the wound in his hand where the hamate surgery was. He is set to be examined today and will need medical clearance prior to resuming the baseball stuff. Sounds like he will not be back until post-All Star Break.
Chris (New York, NY)
What does Stephen Drew mean by he's not 100%? Any chance of a re-occurrence of his ankle injury? When do you expect him to be able to play every day?
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Chris: We knew he wouldn't be 100% when he returned. Not so much an issue of re-injury but rather that it can take a loooooong time for the ankle joint to regain normal mobility after a complicated fracture like he had. Residual swelling causes stiffness and soreness and they have to ensure he doesn't overdo it and set off such a reaction that he actually moves backwards. THat's why he only plays intermittently for now. As for the every day play, it's a matter of how he feels going forward. No formal timetable.
brett gardner...do we see him in July?
Stephania Bell (11:53 AM)
Jeff: That's the hope, but when in July is the question. He is scheduled to go to Tampa with the Yankees, begin taking some swings of the bat. But after multiple setbacks with the elbow/forearm there's no predicting how he'll respond. And so, we wait.
Jason (LA, CA)
Any word on Brett Anderson? Nervous after hearing Jorge DeLa Rosa being shutdown for the season.
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
Jason: No talk of that for Anderson right now. But he's had to go slower after having tightness in his forearm. He wants to be able to get some starts under his belt this season but doesn't mean you can plan on extensive production.
Mark (Downstate Illinois)
Any word yet on the "second opinions" for Paulino and D. Hudson, or is it definitely TJ-surgery-and-out-a-year for both??
Stephania Bell (11:56 AM)
Mark: Not on Paulino. Hudson sees Yocum today. Both are more than likely headed to TJ surgery but it's important given the extent of the procedure and the rehab that these athletes get a couple of opinions and come to the table knowing this is really the only option.
Hi Steph, Any word on how serious Carlos Santana's back injury is?
Stephania Bell (11:57 AM)
Dan: No. He was given the day off Thursday to let it rest after leaving Weds game late. No reports of anything serious but no indication yet whether he'll be ready to go for next game.
Phil (St. Louis)
Tell me some good news about Jaime Garcia, please.
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Phil: I haven't seen the news yet following the visit he was supposed to have with Dr. Andrews...but I'm afraid there wasn't much that sounded good. His shoulder was problematic and they were looking at at least a couple months absence.
Stephania Bell (12:01 PM)
OK everyone - thanks so much for coming! Enjoy the weekend and Happy Fourth of July! See you here same time next Friday.
