Chat with Edward Aschoff
Welcome to SportsNation! On Monday, ESPN.com's SEC blogger Edward Aschoff will stop by to talk some college football.
Aschoff joined ESPN.com in 2011 after spending four years covering the University of Florida for The Gainesville Sun. He grew up in Oxford, Miss., before attending UF, graduating with a B.S. in journalism.
Send your questions now and join Aschoff Monday at noon ET!
Edward Aschoff (12:03 PM)
Happy Monday! Well, as happy as a Monday can bee I guess. Let's talk some SEC football to get your mind off the fact that the weekend is over.
Dan (College Station) [via mobile]
Can A&M beat Leu this weekend? Also what do you see our record being at the end of the season with the way we are playing?
Edward Aschoff (12:06 PM)
This is a very intriguing game. Johnny Manziel has been nearly unstoppable since the Florida game. But honestly, what defenses has he played against? I think he's been one of the most exciting players in the country, but when he played a quality defense like Florida, he was shut down in the second half. LSU is going to bring a lot of heat, but has the able to play solid contain. We are really going to find out what kind of passer Manziel is. Also, if the Aggies can't run the ball, it's game over. This is the last home game before the Aggies go on the road for three straight weeks. And remember, this team doesn't have a bye. I say they get at least eight wins this season.
Does Chizik fire Loeffler to save his own skin?
Edward Aschoff (12:07 PM)
What difference would that do? It's not just the coaching. The personnel isn't as good as we thought. I think you'll see changes after the season, but the players have to check back in and play with some pride and fire. We haven't seen that this season on either side of the ball.
Undefeated SEC champ, Undefeated Oregon, Undefeated Notre Dame. Who gets left out of the BCS championship?
Edward Aschoff (12:08 PM)
Notre Dame. Outside looking in at this point. Michigan State stinking it up isn't helping the Irish.
Dylan (Clinton, Ms) [via mobile]
Hey Ed, do you think LSU still has a chance of winning the national championship with that big win over South Carolina Saturday?
Edward Aschoff (12:09 PM)
Yes, and I thought it did before the game. This defense is just nasty. It's fast and powerful. It was worn down against Florida because that offense was so bad and Florida's defense got the TIgers off the field quickly. If the running game continues to play like it has for the most part, I think the Alabama game essentially becomes a quarterfinal for the national championship. Don't sleep on the Tigers.
Ed--not buying into the hype of UF being #2 with the BCS. This team is still young and developing on the offensive side. These next two games could realy expose this. What packages do you think Pease is developing this week to keep the South Carolina defense off ballance? Going down the stretch don't you think the Gators need to show a little more balance vs. top tier teams like SC, UGA, etc?
Edward Aschoff (12:12 PM)
I agree. I just got through writing that this team is an enigma. It's very similar to the 2006 team in that respect. And that team won it all. I'm not saying the Gators will, but when you look at the numbers it's eerily similar to 2006. But this team doesn't have the threat to pass that 06 did and it doesn't get after the quarterback like 06. It runs better and has better special teams. I know this league is all about running and defending, but Alabama can throw and run. So can Georgia and South Carolina to an extent. Florida hasn't in the last two games and I don't know if it can keep that up against South Carolina and Georgia.
big chicken (big chicken)
Ed,Do you still believe that Gamecocks will still win the east. If they do who will they play LSU, Alabama or Texas A&M. I hope LSU because we should have won.
Edward Aschoff (12:14 PM)
It's funny, Florida actually needed South Carolina to win Saturday. Now, the three-way tie is impossible because someone will have two losses in the East after Florida's game with Georgia. I think Georgia is still in the best position because South Carolina is out of the way and if the Gators win, Georgia just has to beat Florida and the East is its for the taking. I can't reveal my pick because that would spoil my pick for Thursday :) Guess you'll have to read the blog ...
Lee Roy (Starkville, MS)
Can the Bulldogs finally start to get some love? Also, how do you see the rest of the season playing out? We get A&M and Arkansas at home. I'm saying 10-2.
Edward Aschoff (12:16 PM)
Hey, I've been singing their praises all season. I think that team showed a bunch of resiliency against a Vols team that's gonna score points. But they have to keep the emotions up this week against Middle Tennessee. I don't see the Bulldogs losing, but they cant get caught looking ahead to Alabama. I'll go with at least nine wins right now. Tough November
Aaron (St. Pete, FL)
OK, so FLA doesn't have a big-yardage QB, but they've gone 3-0 on the road in the SEC and are #2 in the BCS because of their tough schedule. Why do they not get any love, but South Carolina gets all the love on ESPN, even though LSU pushed them around? No one's considering that FLA is at home this weekend; in my experience watching CFB, that's pretty important.
Edward Aschoff (12:17 PM)
It is but that passing game and lack of a real pass rush is concerning. Those areas have to improve in SEC play. This is a HUGE weekend for the Gators. They have to win or I don't think they win the East.
Greg S (Cookeville, TN)
Ed, Chris must have bumped his head because he just wrote that Will M. is the best coach in the SEC . Has he never heard of the guy named SABAN ?
Edward Aschoff (12:19 PM)
Best coach? He said he was the best coach in the first half, not the best overall coach in the conference. Don't get so defensive. That was a midseason report. And Muschamp has done the best job. That team was supposed to be a distant No. 3 in the East and is now No. 1 and No. 2 in the BCS. That's a heck of a job considering the shape that program was in last year.
Sarah (Atlanta, GA)
Do you think Georgia can play a competitive game against Florida after their poor showing against South Carolina? Do you think the Gators will be at 100% for that game after playing physical games against LSU, Vandy and South Carolina?
Edward Aschoff (12:20 PM)
Georgia isn't out of this thing. No, the Bulldogs didn't play well against South Carolina, but this team is better than what it showed. And the pressure is off UGA. Win and you're in ... if Florida beats South Carolina. I think that team will be more than fired up to play the Gators. And the Gators are already beaten up, so I don't think they'll be totally healthy for that game.
Virginia (Baton Rouge)
Does a 1-loss SEC champ jump an undefeated ND to get to the BCS championship?
Edward Aschoff (12:22 PM)
If the SEC champ has one loss I see it. I don't see any other scenario for the SEC at this point.
Bag Man (Auburn)
Who gets Petrino, Kentucky, Arky, Tenn, Or Au?
Edward Aschoff (12:23 PM)
I don't see the SEC welcoming him back as a head coach. I just dont' see it. Way too much baggage for anyone in this league to deal with. I know winning is important, but have some integrity.
Do you think Arkansas can build on the momentum from the last 2 games enough for John L. Smith to remain their HC beyond this season?
Edward Aschoff (12:23 PM)
No. This team could win out and John L. Smith ain't coming back. No, this program is searching for its new coach and it will be looking outside of the current coaching staff.
Josh (Atlanta, GA)
Ed - We know that everything is win now in the SEC, but 20 years ago, Tom Osborne was allowed to have consistently good teams, but never great at Nebraska. When he finally broke through, he won 3 national championships in 4 years. Bobby Bowden faced similar situation, and reeled off 2 championships in 6 years when he broke through. Do you think that Richt could have something similar happen at Georgia at some point? I have always supported him, and think it is ridiculous to talk about firing a coach who gets you 10 wins a season...that's how you get stuck with a Derek Dooley or Gene Chizik.
Edward Aschoff (12:27 PM)
It's hard to say because the competition on the field and in recruiting is so tough in this league. Richt has done a great job, but he's watched new coaches come into this league and win national championships. That's not good. He is in the state of Georgia and has access to Florida but can't win the big one. I don't see Richt or really anyone being able to do that. Maybe Alabama with the talent it has now and will have next year, but it's still very rare for a team to win back-to-back championships.
Jonathan Banks Strip and Fumble Recovery in the Mississippi State vs Tennessee game not a top ten play in the Country?? Your thoughts?
Edward Aschoff (12:27 PM)
Haven't seen it, but if Banks did it, he probably made it look too easy.
Ed we've got bigger programs than ours (Miss. State) in the SEC that will be looking for a new coach come bowl season. Do you see Dan Mullen leaving one SEC school for another?
Edward Aschoff (12:29 PM)
It'll be interesting to watch him. He keeps saying how much eh an his family love Starkville, but you have to believe that some bigger schools will come calling. And I'm not talking about the SEC. He could get calls from all over if this team continues to play as well as it has.
atl-olemiss-terrell is LEXINGTON STEELE (ATLANTA)
Hey Ed, rumors have started that Nkemdiche is flipping his commit to Ole Miss to please his mother. Could this be true? can our Ole Miss Rebels shock the world on NSD?
Edward Aschoff (12:30 PM)
I don't keep up with recruiting like I used to, but I know Ole Miss has been going hard at him. His brother is on the team, so I'm sure that's a factor in some respect. It would be a major get for Ole Miss if he did. Man Hugh Freeze has been on a roll.
auburn two years ago a BCS NC, now 1-5, where does gene chizik stand as auburns HC next year? do they let him go and maybe pick up patrino with his integrity in question?
Edward Aschoff (12:32 PM)
I have said that I think it's tough to fire a coach two years after he won a national championship, but this team is worse than last year's which was younger. That's not good. Things aren't getting better on the Plains. The offense can't do much of anything good and the defense is near the bottom of the SEC. If Chizik is removed I don't see Petrino going back.
What are your thoughts on the new walking dead episode?
Edward Aschoff (12:33 PM)
I love that Rick is getting crazier. Lots of action and the drama within the group is getting better and better. It's starting to get back to more of what the comics are like. Great start.
Keith (Union Co, F-L-A)
Ed, There has been those who have compared Driskel to Tebow. At this point I think it is early because Driskel still has a lot of develoing to do. But I think if Driskel becomes a good passer he may end up better than Timmy....your thoughts?
Edward Aschoff (12:34 PM)
He's faster and probably has a better arm, but he doesn't have near the intangibles. He isn't the leader Tebow is. He has to be more vocal. He acts like he's young, which he is, but Tebow never acted like he was young. Tebow willed his teams to victories. I don't know if Driskel, or anyone, is the same kind of player as him in that respect.
What the chance? Last year Alabama missed out on the SEC championship game but still sneaked into the NCG and won. With them being ranked # 1 across the board, if Miss. State or LSU beats Bama and goes to the SEC champs game for the West, could it be possible that Bama does it 2 years in a row??? That would have people outside of the SEC pretty upset!
Edward Aschoff (12:35 PM)
No, I don't see it. I don't think pollsters want to see the SEC do that again with the current system we have.
Ed,What is up with all this "love for Petrino" by fans? Do some of these fans have no integrity? I'm with you, I don't think any AD, President, or Board is gonna allow Petrino anywhere close to the SEC.
Edward Aschoff (12:36 PM)
His style won games. No getting around it. But at the end of the day can you really trust him? I don't think I'm ready to. There are plenty of other coaches who can win and don't have a troubled past.
Science (S. carolina)
Ed - When USC wins out and gets to the NCG, will you admit that USC is the best team in the SEC or are you still going to say Alabama?
Edward Aschoff (12:37 PM)
Well, Alabama is No. 1 right now and Jadeveon Clowney and Steve Spurrier both said South Carolina players were scared in the LSU game. Scared doesn't win in this league. Now, if the Gamecocks win out and win the national championship, then I'll certainly say that they are the best because, well, they will have won it all.
Nick (Savannah, GA)
Hey Ed, do you think Georgia can re-establish itself as a running threat to other teams? Does the poor performance from the O-line in the South Carolina loss give teams a reason to no longer respect the run from Georgia and do you think Aaron Murray can get the job done when it comes time for Flordia, another big game.
Edward Aschoff (12:40 PM)
That offensive line is an issue. It looked good until it played a real good SEC defensive line. Guess what? You have to play real good defensive lines to win in this league. That line has to toughen up and grow up before it plays Florida. If not, this team won't be able to run and you can't be one-deminsional against that defense.
Ed, Freshman of the Year? Who you got?
Edward Aschoff (12:41 PM)
Clearly, it's Johnny Manziel. Someone check his birth certificate because there's no way he's just a redshirt freshman. I love the way he plays. He has quite the challenge this weekend though. Let's see him be so dangerous against LSU's defense. If he is ... watch out.
Daryl (Baton Rouge)
Who cares if Petrino has no integrity? He is paid to win football games, and he does that as good as anyone not named Saban. LSU would have won the national title last year with Petrino as coach. LSU fans are hoping he doesnt go to Auburn
Edward Aschoff (12:43 PM)
Looks like I'm having some technical difficulties on my side ...
Come on ed, UGA is clearly out of the race for the east. If Fla was not ranked and this were not a big time game then maybe. Have you forgotten that UGA cannot win big games.
Edward Aschoff (12:45 PM)
If Georgia wins out and Florida beats South Carolina, Georgia's in the driver's seat. The Bulldogs have to show in big games, yes, but this thing ain't over for the Dawgs.
Edward Aschoff (12:46 PM)
Back to the integrity question with Petrino: He never had a chance to win more because of his personal problems. Take a chance on him if you want ...
Damontre Moore's performance got over looked against LA Tech, how well can LSU's O-Line keep him away from Metten-whatever his name is
Edward Aschoff (12:48 PM)
Moore is so much fun to watch. He leads the SEC with 8.5 sacks and almost looks unblockable. LSU did very well against Jadeveon Clowney, but this line has to step up twice in a row against good fronts. Gonna be a challenge.
Andrew (San Antonio, TX)
How much fear is there is the hearts of SEC fans now that the reality exists that they may have to face the Oregon State Beavers for the national championship? It must really be gnawing at them...
Edward Aschoff (12:50 PM)
Gnawing like a beaver ... I get it. Well done. No, I'm sure they don't care really. They'd be more excited if you said Oregon, but we know how well that worked out for the ducks last time ...
One more SEC question. If South Carolina wins this weekend, are not they in the driver's seat. They would have the head to head advantage over FLA and UGA with their two remaining games at home (UT and Ark). Just for fun though, will the SEC do something if South Carolina wins this weekend, but loses to Ark. and assuming UGA wins out, USC will have gone undefeated in the East for two straight years, but still be shut out of the championship game both years.
Edward Aschoff (12:51 PM)
Mike Slive will get the Good Job. Good Effort Miami kid to console the team as it watches the SEC championship if that happens. Talk about bad luck!
The Tennessee fan base is going crazy with Dooley?s record in the SEC as HC and want him gone now. The name that everyone keeps mentioning is Gruden, would he even be interested in coaching college ball and more so at UT?
Edward Aschoff (12:52 PM)
I don't know if he would or not, but I bet he could recruit with his name and his personality. I remember when his name was involved at Florida and Notre Dame and everyone freaked out. It'd be fun to see him in college football.
Marilyn (San Antonio, TX)
Is Kevin Sumlin getting the coaching credit he deserves, or is Johnny Manziel (and even Kliff Kingsbury) taking some of that away?
Edward Aschoff (12:54 PM)
I was just thinking about the job Sumlin has done. This is a brand new staff in a brand new conference (toughest in the country I might add) and his team has looked great. Now, things could change as the teeth of the schedule approach, but you have to be impressed with how well this team has played thus far. Heck of a job by Sumlin and his staff. It all goes back to him having his team workout two weeks longer before starting spring practice. He knew this was going to be a more physical league ...
Dallas (Tennessee )
If Florida is able to win out and be 12-0 can they beat Alabama? I'm a huge Florida Fan, but I just can't see anyone beating Bama.
Edward Aschoff (12:55 PM)
Can't rule them out. But will the Gators be able to run against Alabama? I don't know. if Florida can't run it won't win. But hey, if this team makes it to the SEC championship game without a passing game it might just stun everyone and beat Bama.
Ed, thanks for having confidence in picking LSU to win this last weekend and do you think that the early start to Saturday's game against A&M will play a role in the game.
Edward Aschoff (12:56 PM)
No. These coaches will have their teams fired up. This is a huge game for LSU. Lose and the West is essentially Alabama's. Got win out if they want to make it to Atlanta and beyond.
Dash,Is FL going to finally open up the playbook or are we gonna see a steady dose of Gilly and take the LSU pound the rock approach like the did against USC?
Edward Aschoff (12:58 PM)
I think Muschamp will go with what works. He's kind of like Saban in that sense. He goes with what the defense is giving him and running the ball has worked. It helps when your defense is keeping the offense off the field and you can wear down your opponent. Man, lots of Florida fans on this chat today. Welcome back to SEC football!
Ray (Pawleys Island)
Ed in your earlier question you said SC was out. Thats not right they still control their own destiny all they have to do is win the next 3 and they are going to Atlanta
Edward Aschoff (1:00 PM)
I said if South Carolina loses to Florida they are basically out. Maybe I mistyped, but basically the winner of Saturday's game is in control of the East. If Florida loses, then South Carolina just has to win out. Georgia is rooting for Florida.
Joe V. (Aggieland South - ATL)
Ed, how do you think A&M's success so far this season combined with Texas's failure will benefit A
Edward Aschoff (1:00 PM)
Recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. A&M is winning in the SEC in its first year. That's going to be huge in recruiting.
Dash, who decides what team gets to wear those awful uniforms Carolina wore and will they finally stop bc they've lost both games they worn them in?
Edward Aschoff (1:01 PM)
I was not a fan of those uniforms. I'm pretty sure Under Armour planned that out. I love new uniforms to play with at times. It's fun to mix things up, but man these recent designs have been awful, no matter who is making them.
I was just wondering about the nicknames that coaches are given. I want to know why Darth Visor hasn't stuck nationally for Steve Spurrier like it has within lots of UGA's fan base
Edward Aschoff (1:02 PM)
Because Spurrier is much more conversational than Darth Vador. Funnier too.
Edward Aschoff (1:02 PM)
Because Spurrier is much more conversational than Darth Vador. Funnier too.
This guy (with a tigers mom)
Mr. Dash why does C-Low always copy your picks every week?
Edward Aschoff (1:03 PM)
Because he's nervous about losing his title. I guess he hasn't copied enough lately because he now has a four-game hole to dig out of. I'm taking the SEC blog by storm!
Can Tyler Bray and that passing attack beat Bama? This will be the best passing QB Bama has faced this season
Edward Aschoff (1:05 PM)
It can if Bray has enough time to throw. If he doesn't, his receivers won't matter. I think the Vols can test this team, especially because Bama hasn't really faced any true passing teams yet and that secondary is still needs a true test.
Blues (The SEC Blog)
Do you have a favorite Beano Cook memory?
Edward Aschoff (1:06 PM)
I can't remember anything specific, but I just loved hearing his voice on TV. I could be working on something and all of my attention would drift his way when he came on TV. I wish I had been able to meet him. From what people tell me he was a great person.
Edward Aschoff (1:06 PM)
OK guys, great chat. Hope we can do this again soon.
