Chantel (11:57 AM)
Welcome everyone! We're going to start in a few minutes. It has already been an exciting day in Michigan sports. A 2015 offer went out and the basketball team has a game tonight, so let's get to it, what questions do you have?
Golden Goofer (Minneapolis)
With Notre Dame coming off the non-conference schedule after 2015, which school would be a good fit to play a Home-and-Away series for 2016 and 2017?
Chantel (12:02 PM)
I'm not sure. I imagine they'll look for some bigger games - maybe SEC or Pac-12 type thing? It's hard to say because so much of it is timing. You can't just say, "Well, I want to play USC," because first of all both schools need to have the same dates open in the two year period (which is difficult to find considering a lot of these guys fill their schedules so far in advance with verbal or written agreements).
Jeff Taylor (Jackson, MI)
Who do you think starts as a true freshman (if anyone) on the offensive and defensive lines respectively?
Chantel (12:04 PM)
I'm not sure if any true freshmen will be starting on either line next season. The really is the hardest place for a true freshman to step in and play. Obviously the offensive line had some issues this season but you'll likely fill those spots with redshirt freshmen (if any freshmen at all). Defensively, maybe Taco Charlton but he's early enrolling so he's like a freshman and a half?
Patrick (Dexter, MI)
I know Michigan might take more than 25 recruits because of attrition. But how can Texas A&M take 34 and still looking for more?
Chantel (12:05 PM)
Texas A&M has room for nine early enrollees. Those don't count against the count. So they have 9 (EE) + 25 (fall scholly enrollees) = 34.
Golden Goofer (Minneapolis)
That 1999-00 team was stacked!! Unfortunate you guys lost to Illinois at home that season. Is that the most disappointing home loss suffered since the Lloyd Carr era?
Chantel (12:06 PM)
I thought App State and Toledo were pretty disappointing for the Michigan fan base.
Mike (Ann Arbor)
Timeline for Horford's return?
Chantel (12:07 PM)
No timeline yet. Surgery hasn't been mentioned at all (which is a VERY good thing). And it's the same knee that he injured before, but it's unclear whether it's the same injury. I would assume it'll be a week-by-week thing. Beilein is pretty open and honest about injury issues and what he told us yesterday was that they're optimistic but he's not practicing right now.
Kevin H. (Oak Park, MI)
Which WR on our current (2013) roster do you think will have the biggest impact next season? Doesn't appear that we'll be getting any more WRs signed this class, so I'm hoping someone steps up.
Chantel (12:10 PM)
I think Amara Darboh could be big for Michigan next season. Obviously he had that big catch in practice last week that everyone has been tweeting about. But, he's a phenomenal athlete (played many sports in high school), and he was a state-ranked track guy (so he's fast). Those two attributes, plus the fact that he has great hands and instincts, could make him the Wolverines' next big WR.
Chantel, great article on Patrick Omameh. Just wondering if you knew if he was bringing other freshmen to the children's hospital, as Mooseman did for Patrick. I think it is a great program that needs to continue.
Chantel (12:12 PM)
I asked him about that. He said that study tables work a bit differently right now for freshmen (freshmen athletes at Michigan are required to spend a minimum amount of time -- 10 hours per week I believe -- at the Academic Center studying) and a lot of those hours conflict with Thursday night visits. However, Eddie Boullion (the founder) said that he has been really happy with the turnout this season. It's not just the football and basketball teams that do this -- cheerleaders, soccer players, runners, actual tennis players -- they're all involved and kids just love meeting them.
Barry Unrast (Maria Stein, OH)
No surprise here.....Grean/Treadwell/McQuay updates. #1 on any of their selected school lists?
Chantel (12:15 PM)
Treadwell's No. 1 is still Ole Miss it seems. Michigan is falling further and further behind on him. As far as Green and McQuay, nothing new there. Both like Michigan. Michigan likes them both. McQuay's dad tweeted yesterday that he might not be able to make a decision at the UA All America game, so there's that. But no real news on anything as of now.
Lee Miller (Kalamazoo)
Do you think they are close to any 2014 commits to join Ferns and Ward?
Chantel (12:17 PM)
As everyone remembers last year, the basketball season was good to the Michigan football commits list. I assume it'll be similar this season, though not to the same extent (if we have another 8-commit day I think the internet will crash). But, it's a good opportunity to get commits on campus.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What College Football Bowl Game out of the ones that were not Played Yet are you Looking Forward Seeing This Season?
Chantel (12:20 PM)
I think the BCS Championship game is on everyone's list. People have pretty much written off Notre Dame, so they could be kind of a sleeping giant. I'll be watching the Oregon St./Texas game for sure. BYU/SDSU. Any of the Big Ten games. Bowl season is always interesting.
These arbitrary bowl match ups I find underwhelming. Do you? What's to get excited about Michigan and South Carolina?
Chantel (12:22 PM)
Personally, I'm excited to see the Taylor Lewan/Jadeveon Clowney match up. That will be a battle every single snap. I think they should have a camera just focused on the two of them for the entire game. Outside of that, it should be interesting to see how Michigan game plans offensively against SC's D.
Andrew (Ringgold, VA)
Do you expect Hagerup to be on the team in 2013?
Chantel (12:24 PM)
Not sure. We have suspicions about why he has been suspended before but they haven't been confirmed by the athletic dept. So we can't exactly look back at Dave Brandon quotes and say, 'Yup, this falls under this rule so he'll be kicked off' or 'He'll be suspended for the season.' I think Hoke does a lot on a case-by-case scenario so we'll see. I think it says something that Hoke didn't kick him off immediately, but then again, that could've been just to avoid drama before the bowl game. Who knows.
How many cookies will Tom eat between now and New Year's Day?
Chantel (12:24 PM)
More than me. Less than Santa.
Is Marcus Ball Montee's brother? He's listed as an athlete, what is UM recruiting him to play? Does he have an offer?
Chantel (12:26 PM)
He's the younger brother or Ray Ball, another Wisconsin player. And yes, he's listed as an athlete but Michigan is looking at him as a LB. And yes, he has an offer. Took his official last weekend in Ann Arbor.
Angelo (Clinton Township)
Why is Michigan looking at adding another offensive lineman? I seem to believe that Taylor is headed to the NFL. Don't get me wrong, I think Skipper is a sleeping giant, but i just don't see the benefit of adding another. Let me know what you think. Thanks for all you do!
Chantel (12:31 PM)
They're just looking for depth. Hoke is a lines guy. If there's talent out there, he'll be looking for it.
Do you think the coaches would accept Reon Dawson's committment on Jan. 11th or wait for McQuay to make a decision? It seems like this staff likes to take the lower rated and safer committments as opposed to waiting on the big names we might have a chance with. What do you think?
Chantel (12:33 PM)
Leon McQuay is planning on early enrolling at whichever college he decides to go to, so the coaches will know ahead of time whether or not he's coming to Michigan. Classes start in Ann Arbor the 8th or 9th and so by the time Dawson makes a decision, McQuay could already be in classes at Michigan or elsewhere.
Can Stauskas keep shooting 3s at such a ridiculous clip? Does he have a shot at finishing #1 in the nation in three point shooting percentage?
Chantel (12:35 PM)
The kid has incredible confidence for a freshman, but he's a shooter. I think we saw a bit of a rough day for him last weekend, so we'll learn a lot about how he bounces back over the next few games. He has range. His form is perfect. He's confident. And he can attack the basket so defenders need to respect both parts of his game. That makes him quite dangerous.
Will (NYC )
Has having a taste of mobile QBs impacted future recruiting, or will we revert to statue with golden arms? I know Borges is a WC offense guy, but having a mobile qb is invaluable in today's game. Hopefully Gardner proves it!
Chantel (12:41 PM)
I'm not sure. You look at the guys they're going after in the 2014 class and you see mainly pocket passers, but they're also guys that can move a bit as well. Kids like Coleman Key, Caleb Henderson and Deshone Kizer can all function outside of the pocket. Now, they're not Denard Robinson-like in the open field but they're more similar to a Devin Gardner type guy, though even more so of a pass-first thing. We'll see. I think we'll know a lot more once they put a 2014 QB offer out.
Jim (Howell, Mi)
First, a quick shout out to you Chantel from a fellow UM Grad - Go BlueWhich team do you think the BBall team will stub their toe on first this season....B10 looks too loaded to think they'll make it all the way through the gauntlet without a loss.
Chantel (12:44 PM)
It's hard to say. Can you really consider it stubbing your toe if you're playing a team ranked in the top 25? If so, then any of those teams could beat Michigan. I think Illinois is a team few are talking about right now, but they're there. And Minnesota has some speed and size that Michigan will have to compete with. It's hard to say who Michigan will have trouble with since we haven't seen them with their backs up against the wall yet this season. We don't know what makes them tick so it's hard to say what team will be able to do that.
Any chance the B1G ten will add more schools on the east coast (UCONN)
Chantel (12:47 PM)
I wouldn't ever rule anything out.
Kyle (Lansing, MI)
Will Fitz T be back for the first game of next season?
Chantel (12:49 PM)
People say he's rehabbing well (of course, we don't anything officially nor do we know exactly what happened so we can't really have any kind of a timeline for him). It'll be one thing if he's back. It'll be a completely different thing to see whether he's able to run and cut like he did.
What are Michigans chances with Dan Skipper?
Chantel (12:51 PM)
Tom spoke with him a few days ago and he said, ""Right now I'm trying to make the best decision, and trying to look at all sides. Tennessee still has a lot of things going for it. I've been so busy with finals right now that I basically turned my phone off, so I'm going to catch up with everything." He was on the official visit with a bunch of the commitments, which probably helped Michigan. But he still has visits planned for Arkansas and Ole Miss (would still have space for another official in there). So we're a ways off from knowing anything definitive.
goblue (New York)
Why is it Treadwell starting to look like a long shot? Do you think a final visit to Michigan would help, seeing as it's been a long time since his last visit and his top two favorites have popped up since then?
Chantel (12:54 PM)
A visit could help. But he seems to be very pro-Ole Miss right now and the fact that he has pushed back his Michigan visit a few times seems a bit telling. He loved Michigan for a long time so I'd never completely rule them out, but I just feel like they've fallen out a bit.
Any news on if Gardner will redshirt next season?
Chantel (12:55 PM)
I assume you mean whether he'll get his medical redshirt. No news on that yet.
Do you expect to see Denard throwing the football in the Outback Bowl?
Chantel (12:56 PM)
I don't know. No one has definitely said he will which is either a) part of their strategy to not let SC know anything or b) a way to not create any disappointment if/when Denard doesn't throw the ball. I'm not expecting too much, but we'll see.
Craig Hahn (stockholm sweden)
Hey chantel, big fan a long way from home.. When do you expect we will have a decision about extra year of eligibility for Devin Gardner?? God Jul (merry christmas in swedish!)
Chantel (12:58 PM)
Tack! (thanks in swedish)... As far as Gardner's medical redshirt - not sure when we know. As of late November, Michigan had said they sent in the papers to the review board. They meet every two weeks to discuss and I don't know if they take a holiday or bowl break or not. But as soon as we know anything, you guys will know!
Chantel (1:01 PM)
Alright, it's time to wrap up! Thanks everyone for joining the chat today. Mike will be chatting next week so log on for that. Everyone have a safe and happy holiday season!
