Tom Carpenter (10:59 AM)
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. There's a lot going on in the world of fantasy hoops today, so let's get right into your questions.
Tom is T.Gibson worth holding in 12 team cat 9 if and when both Boozer and Noah are back playing at same time?
Tom Carpenter (11:00 AM)
Austin, odds are that Gibson will go back to his usual sub-par production once Noah joins Boozer in the Bulls lineup again. Ride him in the meantime and move along for a better waiver pickup afterward.
Ben (New York)
Who is the better player to own after the all-star break Drummond or Favors?
Tom Carpenter (11:03 AM)
I've been driving the Drummond bandwagon since the draft, Ben, and my feelings haven't changed. I expect him to move into the starting lineup soon after the All-Star break, but even if he doesn't he should be a better play than Favors. Still, Favors is a nice speculative add in case the Jazz move Jefferson or Millsap and open up more minutes for him.
Hi Carp. Is Bargnani going to be a factor somewhere by the end of the season? I am holding onto HOPE and my playoffs may be riding on him. I could pick up Taj??
Tom Carpenter (11:07 AM)
Hey, Mike. I wouldn't want my playoffs riding on him, but there's not much you can do but wait it out with Bargs. If he is traded, I would be surprised if he landed someplace where his touches would diminish. The arrival of Gay in Canada should limit Bargs's touches. And while that may help boost his FG%, he doesn't do much besides score, so I think he would be better off being traded. My recommendation is that we should expect the Raps to get him on the court this week and showcase him for a trade ... if that happens, I would follow suit in Fantasyland and trade him while he's putting up good stats.
KEEP QUESTION! In a 12 team keeper league where you keep 3 players and give up corresponding draft pick next year. Who has more value at their pick? Wall at 6th round or Drummond at 10th round? Thanks
Tom Carpenter (11:10 AM)
I love keeper leagues, Shaun, and this is a good question. Considering Wall's shaky FG% and health issues, I'd lean toward Drummond in he 10th for the long term. His FT% is going to be a major problem, but his FG%, boards and blocks are going to be huge for years to come. While I'd give the overall edge to Wall straight up, I'd take the four-round difference and keep Drummond.
Ibaka and Tristan Thompson for Josh Smith and Tony Parker. Who gets the better of the deal?
Tom Carpenter (11:12 AM)
Looks like a pretty even deal to me. Basically, Parker's dimes for FG%, boards and blocks. Overall talent and upside is about the same.
Shaun (montreal, qc)
Is kevin love worth stashing for the playoffs in a h2h league?
Tom Carpenter (11:15 AM)
So long as you have the requisite bench space to stash Love, I think he's worth stashing in all formats -- but especially in H2H leagues for the playoffs. He has such tremendous upside.
Pish (Western Mass)
If Bynum does make a return after the All Star break. What are your expectations?
Tom Carpenter (11:17 AM)
That is a tough one, Pish. It's not like Love, who should be in shape and just has to shake off his hand ailment to get his game on. Bynum has two bad knees and bangs in the paint. Plus, it sounds clear that if/when he returns, he will not be 100 percent. Still, I think a floor for him would be low-teens scoring, 8-9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks with 50 FG%. If he can't do that, he shouldn't be on the floor.
dan gilbert (cleveland)
hey buddy, is mo speights going to continue to take zeller's time?
Tom Carpenter (11:20 AM)
If Speights keeps forcing the issue with this kind of play, he will. I'm skeptical that he will keep up this pace, though, because he hasn't done so yet during his career. Ride his hot hand for now, but I think Zeller will be the guy to have a month from now.
Manu Ginobili should i stick with him or pick up a hot Nick Young? I'm 16 games up in my league and have not lost a head to head game yet.
Tom Carpenter (11:24 AM)
Sounds like you're having a hell of a start, Beck, so you should be focusing on the postseason now. Specifically, check out the games played schedule for your team. Spurs have a weak finish to the season (3,3,4,3), while the 76ers have a better sched (4,4,3,4) ... plus, I think Young may be able to keep up this pace, because I'm concerned about J-Rich's health. I'd go with Young over Ginobili.
Matt K. (Evansville, IN)
If Bargnani gets traded to the Bobcats, how will that affect Byron Mullens' value?
Tom Carpenter (11:27 AM)
Good question, Matt. Obviously, that would depend on the pieces the Bobs send back, but assuming that Biyombo stays, it may affect him more than Mullens. We'd probably see Mullens, Bargs and Biyombo splitting minutes in the paint, and Biyombo remains the biggest project of the three. Mullens should be a solid play ROS.
thoughts on Jeff Green the rest of the way? good %'s, with that unique block and three a game. Is he worth it in a ten team head to head?
Tom Carpenter (11:29 AM)
I'm using him in a 12-team H2H, and he may have enough value in 10-team leagues, Jeff. I don't like him in roto, because he just doesn't contribute enough to make a big difference. In points leagues, though, the positives you mention give him some punch.
What's the over/under on games until Keith Smart is fired?
Tom Carpenter (11:31 AM)
If fantasy owners made the call, he would have been canned a long time ago. I honestly don't think he's going anywhere until the team is sold. It sounds like he finally realized what we all knew: that Aaron Brooks is no good and that he needs to run IT2 and Jimmer at the point. One step at a time, I guess.
Tom, a trade in our h2h league was just made that has caused a lot of controversy. A team in the bottom of the standings just traded Dywane Wade for Wesley Matthews and Tristan Thompson to a team firmly in the playoff picture that has already made some questionable trades this year......can you imagine any scenario where that trade helps the side dealing Wade?
Tom Carpenter (11:35 AM)
Hey, Alex. Obviously, that trade is a reach, to say the least, but you can at least make a case for it ... if the guy is looking for 3s and boards and needs to fill roster holes via a 2-1 deal. My standard answer regarding bad trades is that the only reason to rescind a trade is collusion or if a newbie is being duped by a vet. The real long-term solution is to be sure you have the right people in our league ... you may want to revisit whether people who make bad trades regularly should stick in the league next season.
Kyle H. (Atlanta, Ga)
Since Bradley has not been productive at the point for Boston, Any chance Barbosa gets a chance at staring pg?
Tom Carpenter (11:38 AM)
Kyle, the trouble is that they only had one point guard on their team: Rondo. The rest of the team has averaged a combined 12 apg ... and removing Pierce's 4 or so dimes per game, they have about 8 from the rest of the squad. Fact is that we should see Pierce, Lee, Barbosa, Bradley and Terry add a dime or two to each of their averages, but nobody is going to suddenly become a PG. I think Terry likely is the biggest beneficiary, though.
Andy (West Virginia)
Morning Tom! Thoughts on K.Leonard moving forward ROS? Needing 3's steals and shooting %'s add Leonard or go for: N.Young,Stephenson,Terry,Delfino or S.Brown?
Tom Carpenter (11:40 AM)
Hey, Andy. As much as I wish Leonard would be turned loose to max out his tasty upside, I just don't see it happening, because Pops just runs out whoever matches up best on a give night. Keep an eye on him, but I'd ride Young's hot hand fr now ... and likely ROS, if he manages to maintain focus for the long term.
dk (dynasty league)
Jimmy Butler or Lance Stephenson hold value ROS???
Tom Carpenter (11:41 AM)
If Rose wasn't going to return, Butler would be a no-brainer. I think he'll still maintain value, but Stepheson should be in a better spot to maintain his current pace ROS.
Tom Carpenter (11:42 AM)
FYI, please try to avoid reposting the same question every five seconds ... I typically end up ignoring spam-like questioning. Thanks!
Jack ((My Lazy Laptop))
Spencer Hawes or Byron Mullens going forward (Thanks)
Tom Carpenter (11:45 AM)
Jack, the only thing that Hawes is consistent about is being inconsistent. That having been said, it sounds like Thad is going to be out a while and we are still waiting on Bynum, so I think Hawes is in position to churn out quality stats for the foreseeable future. If Mullens could shoot, or if you just need boards, I'd give him the edge ... but he can't shoot.
Thoughts on Nate Robinson? His value has to decrease when Rose returns right? So his shelf life is about 2 more weeks?
Tom Carpenter (11:46 AM)
Sun (Austin, TX)
Can someone please give Cousins a xanax before each game?
Tom Carpenter (11:48 AM)
Dude needs to find a way to control his emotions one way or another ... it's hard not to have Ron Artest flashbacks with this kid. So much talent and upside ... let's hope he has a Sheed-type revelation someday, so he can really contribute to his team and our fantasy teams.
Sun (Austin, TX)
Hey Tom. I'm a big fan of the chats. What are your thoughts on the values of Knight and Derozan after the trade? Derozan has played pretty well so far.
Tom Carpenter (11:51 AM)
Thanks, Sun. These chats are always a weekly highlight for me. I think DeRozan couldn't have asked for better fortune this season. He's currently locked into a starting role with good players around him drawing defensive pressure away from him in the backcourt. Hopefully, a Bargs trade won't change that. As for Knight, I think he should settle into a comfortable role alongside Calderon. It may take Knight a couple of weeks to get used to playing the off-guard role to a true PG, but I expect his FG% to pick up and for him to score plenty of points and 3s ROS.
Which Deron am I going to get ROS and keeper-wise should I trust him next year?
Tom Carpenter (11:54 AM)
I love how D-Will and PJ fit together. Deron just isn't a guard who needs a coach chattering in his ear and calling plays all game long -- that's why he forced Jerry Sloan and Avery Johnson out -- PJ just let's him go ball. The catch right now is that Deron can't seem to stay healthy. If he can rectify that issue, he should remain a super-stud ROS and next season.
Any trade rumors invoving the Jazz big men? Would love to add Favors with a full complement of minutes
Tom Carpenter (11:56 AM)
Most of the talk has been about moving Jefferson, but it's safe to assume they will do their best to move Millsap if they can't get the right deal for Jefferson. Regardless, Favors is one of the prime pre-deadline fantasy roster stashes.
Is Batum's wrist a big issue? Trade em Keep em?
Tom Carpenter (12:02 PM)
It's clearly becoming a concern, Tony. A wrist is tricky because a guy can play through it quite often, but it ends up affecting his shooting ability. Batum's only taken 18 shots over his past three games after going 4-14 FG in the game before that. With that kind of low production, it isn't a good time to trade him, because you won't get full value. If he gets off a couple of good games, though, I'd consider dealing him if I got the right offer. Still, with the All-Star break around the corner, he may just skip a couple of games, take advantage of the break and come back at full strength, so don't panic.
Tom Carpenter (12:03 PM)
Well, that's a wrap on another great Q & A session. Thanks as always for the excellent questions, and I'll see you back here next week! Be sure to follow me on Twitter @AtomicHarpua
