Chad Ford (1:02 PM)
Aloha everyone and welcome to the chat today. We'll do NBA trade deadline stuff in first half hour and NBA DRaft in second half hour. Let's roll ...
Deven (New York, NY)
Would a Josh Smith trade to the Spurs make them instant title contenders or are there some pros and cons to it?
Chad Ford (1:05 PM)
It's a good home for him ... but I don't the Spurs have the assets to get a deal done. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker aren't going anywhere. Manu doesn't make sense for the Hawks. I'm sure they would be interested in Kawhi Leonard, but I think it's highly unlikely the Spurs would move him. Tiago Splitter is a possibility, but those numbers don't come close to adding up. I think a Dejuan Blair is the most likely trade scenario for the Spurs.
Whos front runner for josh smith?
Chad Ford (1:07 PM)
That is the question. Always has been. The Hawks have been interested in moving him for the past 2 seasons, but have never gotten a strong offer for him. Plenty of teams are interested including the Nets, Spurs and Lakers ... but the Hawks want value in return and none of those teams are willing to part with core players to get him. I think the 76ers might make some sense ...
Chad...I hope all is well...what's your opinion of Evan Turner to date, does he have any trade value and if so what could the Sixers get back for him?
Chad Ford (1:09 PM)
I think Turner is one player who is definitely available. Ditto for Spencer Hawes. That package should be able to get them a quality player. They seem to be to be a natural fit for Josh Smith ... however they face the same dilemma everyone does with Smith. He's an unrestricted free agent this summer. He wants A LOT of money. No one wants to trade valuable assets for a guy who could be a two to three month rental.
Would a deal between the Jazz and Clippers for Bledsoe make sense or be a possibility? Would Millsap or Jefferson help the Clippers?
Chad Ford (1:12 PM)
Might ... but I think the main position the Clippers are trying to upgrade is small forward which is why players like Paul Pierce or Danny Granger might make the most sense (though Granger's latest setback, a bout of the flu means he may no be out of the trade mix). KG is a possibility just because he's KG. Brings so many intangibles to the table. Millsap and Jefferson are both very good players ... but neither one is a great fit.
Long term, Wouldn't a swap of Bledsoe and Jordan for Garnett make a ton of sense for Boston?
Chad Ford (1:14 PM)
Yes. And it would make a lot of sense for the Clippers to. I don't think, however, that the Clipps are currently offering DeAndre Jordan as part of the package. If he is added, I think Danny Ainge has to seriously consider it. Gets his big man + either Rondo or Bledsoe would be an awesome asset to have this summer in a second trade.
You just wrote about Jennings wanting out of Milwaukee...Is this something that happens before the trade deadline? If so, what are some possible deals?
Chad Ford (1:17 PM)
In my trade story today, I did write that while the Bucks aren't shopping Jennings, they may be forced to listen to trade offers. Sources say Jennings has "irreconcilable differences" with the Bucks and is pushing for either a trade now or a toxic offer sheet in the summer. Bucks own his restricted rights this summer so they can't be totally pushed around. But if Jennings got a big, front loaded offer sheet from a team like the Mavs, the Bucks would have a very hard time matching that and may lose him for nothing. So while I think the Bucks prefer to hold onto him and see what happens this summer, if a good offer came now ... they'd have to listen.
Haris Syed Abbasi (Edison, NJ)
What deal can Orlando make for Brandon Jennings that would make sense?
Chad Ford (1:18 PM)
Magic have a lot of assets. Some combo of Jameer Nelson, J.J. Redick and perhaps a young player for Jennings, and the expiring contracts of Beno Udrih and Sammy Dalembert?
Jeff (Pleasant Prairie, WI)
Is Jennings to Dallas realistic? I'm assuming Collison would be the main piece chiming back, does that mean they would extend Ellis?
Chad Ford (1:20 PM)
Dallas doesn't have as many assets. Darren Collison, Jae Crowder and maybe a pick? Brandon Wright??
Any way the Bucks would look to Atl to unload Jennings or is there no fit?
Chad Ford (1:21 PM)
Jeff Teague? Anthony Morrow? Could be a larger deal that include Josh Smith?
Mike Ho (Hong Kong)
Does Bargnani for Boozer have any legs left?
Chad Ford (1:25 PM)
It's the type of deal that make sense in principle, but is complicated by the major tax ramifications for the Raptors if they did this trade for Boozer. Raptors have zero incentives to be in the draft this year (Thunder own their pick if it's 4-14) so they are making a huge push for the playoffs. But is a Raptors team headlined by Rudy Gay and Carlos Boozer really more than a .500 team? Not sure that's worth paying the tax over.
Hi Chad, any news about where Redick might head to?
Chad Ford (1:26 PM)
Teams with interest include the Bucks, Bulls and Pacers ... seems like the Bucks have the most assets to pull off a deal if they wanted.
Hey Chad. How good can the Pacers be when Granger returns? Do you think it's possible for him and George to co-exist? If the Pacers keep Granger, do you think he's going to spend some time at the 4 spot to allow George to play more minutes at the 3?
Chad Ford (1:28 PM)
They're already really good. The question is whether Granger adds to the mix or takes away. Adding a 17 ppg scorer to the mix isn't always a good thing. It can be if Granger is willing to play a role and let George shine. Or, if he insists on being the alpha dog, it could throw George into a funk and actually hurt things. If Granger is really going to miss another week, I think the chances of him getting traded before the deadline go down significantly. Only teams interested in Granger are contenders and a week may not be enough time to convince them he's go to go for the long stretch.
Why do you think the Suns might be interested in Al Jefferson? Is he really a better fit than Gortat?
Chad Ford (1:31 PM)
I have no idea what the Suns are doing. Some days I'm not sure they know either. Funny team that seems caught in purgatory between trying to win now and rebuild. Jefferson is a good player, but doubt he's the long-term answer. I know Phoenix doesn't want to hear this, but they should be blowing this one up ... getting young talent, high draft picks, etc. The other way is just going to prolong the suffering.
Chad, how does the injury to Nerlens Noel effect his draft stock?
Chad Ford (1:33 PM)
Sorry folks, not going to comment on Noel until we get a diagnosis from doctors on the knee. It looked horrible, but it could be a lot of different things. It's just not fair to speculate on his future until we have more info. If the news breaks during the chat, we can talk more ... as for now just praying for him, his family and the team. No one wants to see talented young people like Noel suffer like this. He was having a very good year and from all accounts is a great young man.
Chad, Victory Oladipo appears to be the most recent college player that's vaulted up draft boards. Whose next though? Steven Adams?
Chad Ford (1:34 PM)
Could be. Adams looking better and better. He's still very raw offensively, but his defensive presence plus his improvement on the offensive end are very encouraging. I think it's likely he stays at Pitt at least one more year, but if he did declare, he's a lock for the first round and could go much higher.
Could Victor Oladipo be a top 10 pick?
Chad Ford (1:36 PM)
Yes. He's in the Top 10 on our Top 100 and has been steadily rising all season. Elite NBA athlete. Elite defender. Elite motor. Emerging offensive game. Needs to tighten up his handle and continue to work on his jumper ... but he's so talented I think he's got a shot of going higher than Cody Zeller.
With the No. 1 Pick MJ and Cho take who?
Chad Ford (1:38 PM)
Probably Ben McLemore. He's a very good fit to them with Kemba Walker on one side and MKG on the other. Anthony Bennett is the other guy that might make a lot of sense for them at the 4.
Why isn't Marcus Smart rated higher than a guy like Mclemore? SG's are rarely franchise changing...where as point guards can have immediate impact (recent example: Damian Lillard). Smart seems like he has all the nba tools, size and skill to quickly lift a lottery team.
Chad Ford (1:40 PM)
Smart just has more holes in his game right now. Better shooting and a tighter handle would help his cause. He's No. 4 on our Big Board ... so he's high enough. And frankly, he's got a shot at going No. 1 if a team in need of a point guard ... like the Raptors or Magic got the No. 1 pick. This year, everything is relative with no clear No. 1 pick.
It doesn't make any sense that Plumlee's draft stock is lower than it would've been after his freshman season when he's now a vastly superior player with the same athleticism in a weaker draft.
Chad Ford (1:42 PM)
Age matters in the NBA draft and at 23, every scout believe Plumlee should be dominating against younger, less talented players. He's still a likely lottery pick, I just think teams feel like his upside is a bit more limited now ...
News just broke that Nerlens Noel tore is ACL and is out for the season. How does this affect his draft stock?
Chad Ford (1:47 PM)
The good news: Players can completely recover from torn ACL's and assuming the surgery and rehab go well, it shouldn't affect his ability to be an elite player. The bad news? It would affect his draft stock if he wants to declare for the NBA draft this season. Teams will be reluctant to take any player number one who is currently rehabbing like this. I'll do a longer take on ESPN.com in a few minutes ...
Chad Ford (1:47 PM)
Gotta cut the chat short everyone. ESPN has asked me to do an instant reaction to the Nerlens Noel news. Need to get writing ... we'll do it again next week.
