Andy (2:44 PM)
Here to chat for a few. Crazy week.3:30 ESPNU First Take College Basketball Edition with me, Seth Greenberg and Prim.
Andy, is this the year a 1 seed goes down to a 16 seed ?
Andy (2:46 PM)
There is great depth and parity but I don't think that will occur. The 16s aren't close to the 1s yet. I know the 15-2 has occured and did last year with Norfolk State and Missouri. But that might have been more of a seeding issue.
Andy (2:48 PM)
Hard to argue that now after the Runnin' Rebels lost badly to Air Force. UNLV has work to do. The good news is the schedule is favorable down the stretch. UNLV simply has to win games. The resume is a bit light right now.
Robert (San Diego)
Why do you think that Colorado who has beaten multiple top 25 teams and is top 20 in the RPI is not getting any love in the polls (not even a vote)?
Andy (2:51 PM)
The inconsistent play in January is the reason. There was a post-Arizona hangover for the Buffs. The trick for CU is to ensure there is carryover from the win over Arizona Thursday and the play of Spencer Dinwiddie throughout the rest of the Pac-12 season. CU followed up the sweep in Oregon with the home win over Arizona. Now the Buffs must go get ASU and continue to be a factor and the polls and seeding will come.
Do the Zags have a legitimate chance of becoming a #1 seed?
Andy (2:56 PM)
yes. I'm not sold Duke and Miami will be No. 1 seeds. One of them will likely be a No. 2, opening up a spot for the Zags to slide in as a No. 1.
Willis (North Carolina)
With Lorenzo Brown back, how far do you think NC State can go in March?
Andy (2:58 PM)
Mark Gottfried told me he wasn't 100 percent yet. He needs to be for the Wolfpack to reach their potential. I'm still waiting, like many others, to see the Wolfpack string togethre a number of good games in a row. Now would be a good time to start.
IU or MSU on Tuesday?
Andy (3:01 PM)
I'll go with Michigan State in the Breslin Center.
Jason (Floyds Knobs, IN)
The enviornment at IU games in Bloomington is off the charts now. It's electric on television but unbelieveable in person. As of today, right now...is there a better home court in all of college basketball?
Andy (3:04 PM)
Hard to argue. But I still say Phog Allen is No. 1 in terms of overall atmosphere. But Assumebly Hall in Bloomington is getting right up there to possibly No. 2 for me. I remember it in college and it wasn't as good then as it is now.
barbara (potomac, MD)
How do you feel about the age of the Uof Miami basketball players? Are they 4-6 years older than most ACC players?26 seems unusual
Andy (3:07 PM)
And that's exactly why Miami will be around for possibly weeks in the NCAA tournament.
What's your take on Middle Tennessee? Really experienced team. Could they make a run in March?
Andy (3:09 PM)
I keep hearing that Middle is a threat to win multiple games. Tony Benford of North Texas told me that this team has all the tools to be trouble in March.
Saloogie (Memphis, TN)
Andy, alright...the Memphis Tigers. Geron Johnson is playing out of his mind right now and Memphis didn't really have his services early in the year in losses to VCU (dnp) and Minnesota (first D1 game ever). How much do folks like you and the committee take that into consideration if those losses are looked at to discredit what Memphis has accomplished as of late?
Andy (3:15 PM)
I do. Memphis is on quite a roll. I spoke with Josh Pastner and he is quite fine being under the radar. His players huddled, defended well and are sharing the ball much better. Memphis will be fine.
Why do you and your colleagues classify teams as major or mid-major? Is it because you aren't capable of analyzing teams on their own merits and judge them by their football team or resources? Just lazy. Get over it.
Andy (3:17 PM)
I'm not a fan of it at all. Please offer up another term. I'd gladly take it. We need to stop using those terms. I agree.
Ben (Charlottesville, VA)
Why isn't Joe Harris getting mentioned in the ACC POY race? The guy's averaging nearly 18 ppg in ACC play in a slow-down motion offense with far fewer possessions per game than other teams. Is the media really so pacist?
Andy (3:22 PM)
I said that today on our show coming up at 3:30 p.m. If UVA finishes in the top three he has to be in consideration.
Andy, even if the SMC Gaels beat Creighton and BYU at home, I still think they need the auto-bid. Concur?
Andy (3:24 PM)
the next time the Gaels play the Zags will likely be in the WCC title game. So that's a given to get the AQ if that occurs. Beating Creighton and BYU at least keeps them in the discussion but I don't see it at this point anything short of sweeping those two games.
Jojo (The Third Coast)
Hey there, AK. I was wondering if being so-so is enough to get the heels into the tourney? Obviously they'd prefer a good win over duke, nc state, or a sleeping miami in the acc tourney, but do they NEED it?
Andy (3:25 PM)
It's not about being so-so, it's about beating quality teams. time is running out.
Craig (Braintree, MA)
How important was the win for Minnesota last night?
Andy (3:26 PM)
Huge. Hard to underscore how important it was for the Gophers. They have an easier slate going forward. But they couldn't afford anothre home loss after Illinois.
Andy (3:27 PM)
