Scott Powers (12:03 PM)
Hi all, hope everyone is having a good Wednesday. I'll be here for about 45 minutes answering questions.
Mark (San Diego)
Key scoreres Sharp and Hossa, what is their status?
Scott Powers (12:03 PM)
Mark, it sounds like Hossa could possibly go on Friday. Probably next week for Sharp.
Any rumors on what the hawks might do at the trade deadline, if at all?
Scott Powers (12:08 PM)
Nick, Jarome Iginla and Derek Roy are the two names I've heard, but nothing definitive. I think Bowman is keeping his eyes open, but isn't going to force anything. With Hossa and Sharp coming back, they feel they're gaining players, too.
Scott Powers (12:09 PM)
Sorry, having some internet issues at the United Center. Should be okay now.
Do you think it is worth giving up, possibly, two top prospects, a roster player, and a draft pick for Jarome Iginla?
Scott Powers (12:09 PM)
Personally, I don't think it's worth it. He doesn't fit exactly what they need and it's a lot to give up for him.
Mike P (St. Louis)
What are the chances of this whole Jarome Iginla deal? Would the hawks have to empty out Rockford?
Scott Powers (12:11 PM)
Mike, it sounds like at least a first-round pick and a prospect. I haven't heard what Blackhawks prospects they'd want. At this point, I don't think the odds are good. I think there are other teams more interested.
Rhino (Buffalo Grove)
When the Hawks start the playoffs I see Emery being the #1 goalie, do you see the same thing.
Scott Powers (12:12 PM)
Rhino, I don't that will play itself out for at least another few weeks. Emery is building a case, but Crawford's numbers are still better and I think Quenneville still favors him. I think their starts down the stretch might decide that.
BIGGESTHAWKFAN (MODESTO, CALIFORNIA)
Scott, do the hawks have the cap space right now to get guys like Iginla, Ribiero, or Roy? and if they do can they be signed for a long term deal like Ribiero's reported wanting a 5 year deal?
Scott Powers (12:14 PM)
They do have some room in their cap to make a move like that now. Signing a long-term deal is less likely. It may also depend on what they do with their upcoming free agents (Stalberg, Bickell, etc.) They do have some guys ready to make that jump from the minors, too.
Justin H (Fort Myers, FL) [via mobile]
Carbomb Carcillo has been a healthy scratch quite a bit lately....what gives?
Scott Powers (12:16 PM)
Justin, Quenneville hasn't been happy with his play. Carcillo did play about seven minutes last night.
James (Mount Prospect)
Scott, in your opinion, do the Hawks need to acquire a second line center, a physical winger, do they need to stand pat?
Scott Powers (12:17 PM)
James, I think a second line center would help them. Quenneville said last night he would like more out of Bolland. I think that second line will improve, though, when Sharp returns. Bolland did look slightly better with Kane and Sharp at his sides.
With the talent on this team the pp should be better. Do you blame coaching? It has not been a strength since Kitch arrived...
Scott Powers (12:19 PM)
Russ, I don't know if it's coaching. They work on it in practice. For whatever reason, they just often get too patient on the power play. They did get some quality chances and just missed a few goals last night. It seems to vary from game to game. Quenneville wasn't happpy with it against LA, but he was pleased with it last night.
Do you think the Hawks should go after Iginla? Once Hossa and Sharp come back, our top 6 will be just fine when it comes to wingers, and I think Calgary wants too much for him. But should we try anyway because he is, after all, Jarome Iginla?
Scott Powers (12:21 PM)
Al, like you, I think adding Iginla would help, but I don't think it's worth it for what Calgary is asking. I think you add a healthy Hossa and Sharp again and this team looks a lot better.
ryan (Dekalb, IL)
hawks obviously need a centre with all of their faceoff woes, this isn't old news. who do you think has a chance to be wearing an indian head on their jersey after the trade deadline next week?
Scott Powers (12:24 PM)
Ryan, not sure if the Blackhawks will be able to find a huge upgrade at Bolland. There doesn't seem to be a lot available at this point. Derek Roy is the one name I've heard. Also, the faceoffs aren't great, but they're also not as bad as people make it to be. They have a 49.9 percent on faceoffs. It ranks around middle of the league.
Who's the fastest skater on the roster? I'm saying Saad.
Scott Powers (12:25 PM)
Matt, Saad is up there. Stalberg is pretty fast as well.
What's the biggest key to success for the hawks this Friday against Anaheim?
Scott Powers (12:27 PM)
Corey, I would say closing out the game. The Blackhawks have held third-period leads in both games, and the Ducks outplayed them in both third periods. I think it's going to be a point of emphasis come Friday. The Blackhawks can't let teams control the puck as much in the third period as they allowed LA and Anaehim to do recently.
Mike (Brookfield, WI)
Any word on if Stan is working on an extension for Stalberg?
Scott Powers (12:29 PM)
Mike, no word on that. I don't expect anything until after the season.
Craig T (Plainfield, IL)
Is it wrong for me to want the hawks to make a trade , if for anything just for some insurance? Hossa has been out a couple times now and with Sharp being out.. Just alittle worried.
Scott Powers (12:31 PM)
Craig, I don't think it's wrong to want that. This team is really good, but it still isn't perfect. Hossa has been banged up a few times this year. I just can't say right now the Blackhawks will get something done. There aren't a lot of trade rumors out there right now.
Andy (Rock Island.)
Scott-Who is your 3rd pick to take the shootout shot on Friday when the hawks are tied with anaheim?
Scott Powers (12:34 PM)
Andy, Hossa if he's healthy. Otherwise, I'd go with Saad or Stalberg.
Tom (Pingree Grove, Illinois)
Hi, Scott: Is there a reasonable chance that Victor Stalberg may be dealt before the trade deadline? Thank you.
Scott Powers (12:35 PM)
Tom, I don't see that happening. Stalberg is highly valued on this team and has been key to this year's success. I don't see them messing with that.
What would it take to acquire Derek Roy?
Scott Powers (12:36 PM)
Joe, I haven't heard any specific requests. I would imagine a draft pick and maybe a prospect.
Zach [via mobile]
I agree adding Hossa and Sharp back in the mix will be a boost... But are we asking a lot for a "healthy Hossa" at this point? I would hate to make no moves and lose him again in the playoffs? I think the JI trade might be worth it for another cup!!!!!
Scott Powers (12:38 PM)
Zach, I think if Bowman can get the Iginla deal done, he will. There's interest there. The problem is there are also teams in pursuit of him.
Jeff (Houston, TX)
Hi Scott,I can't think of many other teams with a two-goalie tandem as successful as the blackhawks. Do you think this will inspire a trend towards teams having two-goalie systems?
Scott Powers (12:42 PM)
Jeff, I think in recent years more teams have turned to two goalies. I'd have to go through the stats, but that seems to be more of a trend. I think this year's schedule has also dictated that. I think Emery's success has also given Quenneville more confidence in turning to him more often.
Are the Hawks being "extra" cautious with Hossa given their status in the standings?
Scott Powers (12:43 PM)
Curt, I would assume so. He's been banged up a few times this year. And while it's not the same injury each time, they want to make sure he's as healthy as he can be before bringing him back. There's no need to rush him back.
Don (Columbus, OH)
Hey Scott - Who will get the nod in net Friday? Craw or Emery? Also, should we be concerned about the lackluster PP lately or can it be attributed to the loss of Hoss and Sharp?
Scott Powers (12:44 PM)
Don, I would assume Crawford, but that won't be officially announced until probably tomorrow. The power play has to be a bit of a concern. It wasn't great even when Sharp and Hossa were out there either.
Doug (Tinley Park, Illinois)
The Hawks have a lot of good prospects but not enough roster space. In the future, do you see the Hawks holding them all in Rockford or packaging a few together for a high level player?
Scott Powers (12:46 PM)
Doug, I think that's the benefit of having a lot of young talent in any sport. You stockpile young talent, bring some up to use, but also trade some off for more proven talent to help right away.
Jeff (South Bend)
Since Emery is 12-0-0 is there a chance that he will become the new #1 over Crawford?
Scott Powers (12:47 PM)
Jeff, I still think Crawford is the guy, but Emery is building a case. It'll be intersting to see how that plays out in the next few weeks.
Scott Powers (12:49 PM)
Sorry, I have to run early today. As always, feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or tweet me @espnchihawks or @espnchipowers. The trade deadline is April 3, so we might have a lot to talk about in the coming week. Thanks again for all your questions.
