Max Olson (4:25 PM)
Hey guys, welcome to this week's HornsNation chat. Fall camp starts Monday. Send in all your Longhorn-related questions and we'll get this started.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
When does Training Camp Open for Texas?
Max Olson (4:28 PM)
Monday. First day of full pads doesn't come until the end of the week. Another thing to keep in mind entering camp is that the freshmen usually get eased into practice, they'll have workouts on their own the first few days.
Ben Corlas (Utah)
Will Case McCoy transfer out of Texas this year?
Max Olson (4:29 PM)
No. Too late at this point. McCoy is a senior, so the only way he'd be able to leave and even play this fall is if he went to a lower level. Mack Brown 100% expects McCoy to rejoin the team after 10 weeks in Peru and he'll serve as an experienced backup who will help David Ash.
Who will win the Big 12?
Max Olson (4:30 PM)
The preseason favorite according to conference media is Oklahoma State. I can understand that. If you ask me, OSU and Texas are the two best teams in the league. I'd have them 1A and 1B, honestly.
Jose (Fort WOrth)
I went to Austin over the weekend and checked out Franklin's BBQ. it was well worth the four wait. best brisket i have ever had. Do you see Texas winning games by blowouts or should we expect a lot of close games?
Max Olson (4:31 PM)
First of all, Franklin is incredible. Best brisket ever. I've been three times and it's always perfection. I do expect plenty of close games. Ole Miss, Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma -- any of them could be nail-biters. So could BYU, to a lesser extent.
Any News On The Florida Rb's Visit?
Max Olson (4:36 PM)
Dalvin Cook arrived in Austin last night with his family and should be done with his visit later this afternoon. Not expecting him to commit or anything, but should be an eye-opener for a kid who's never been to Texas before
Chris K. (OKC)
Are Texas fans afraid of Blake Bell? Should they be?
Max Olson (4:37 PM)
Not really, no. They know he can score in goal-line sets and is dangerous on third downs, sure, but I think they question his passing talents. I think Bell will be one of the top 5 QBs in the league this year, but I really don't know where to peg him.
Marcus (Flower Mound)
Expectations for David Ash this season
Max Olson (4:39 PM)
I liked the numbers that Sean Adams threw out there last week: 3,100 yards, 70% completions, 25 TDs, 9 INTs. That seems like an ideal goal in terms out his output, and getting to 25 passing TDs would be big for this offense's balance.
david (DALLAS TX)
MAX HOW DO U SEE TEXAS CLASS ENDING UP
Max Olson (4:40 PM)
If they win 10-11 games, I bet they end up with Jamal Adams, Edwin Freeman, possibly Tony Brown, not sure on Solomon Thomas. If it's worse than that, I think Freeman is probably the only lock. Think UT might want to find 1 more offensive tackle for this class, a RB, a DE and several DBs.
Do You Think Any Of The Incoming Freshman Are Immediate Difference Makers?
Max Olson (4:42 PM)
Definitely. Adrian Phillips told me at media days last week that he likes the confidence he's seen in Antwuan Davis, which I think we all expected. He'll have a chance to play. So will Darius James, Kent Perkins and Rami Hammad. Pick 2 from the trio of Jake Oliver, Jacorey Warrick and Montrel Meander -- those guys will have to contribute.
Trent (Los Angeles)
Hey Max, what do you think of Texas's recruiting class this year?? Seems like a lot of 3 stars?
Max Olson (4:43 PM)
A lot of the three-stars are guys who fill big needs (namely on the defensive line) and I do think some of those three-star wide receivers will move up to four-star ratings before it's all said and done.
Clint (Dallas, TX)
What's up with Texas and recruiting all those good DBs? Will they get any elite ones at this point?
Max Olson (4:44 PM)
Best chance is with Edwin Freeman (to me, he's a hybrid S/LB at the next level). Texas still has a legit chance with Jamal Adams and Tony Brown, and I do think they can sway them if they win a lot this fall. It might be that simple. Don't call Brown an LSU lock by any means, I think we've all been overlooking the role track will play in this decision and Texas' track coaches are going to be aggressive in working to change Brown's mind.
What are your honest thoughts on the Johnny Manziel story ESPN did today?
Max Olson (4:46 PM)
Phenomenal stuff by Wright Thompson. Everyone should read it if they haven't already. There are a lot of aspects of that story and a lot of honest comments from his father that will get people talking, but I think all in all it's a fascinating look into Manziel's fishbowl and how unprepared he was/is to handle his unexpected fame. I know some people will not sympathize with him, no matter what, but the family story there is incredible.
Best WR behind Davis and Shipley?
Max Olson (4:52 PM)
If I had to predict today, I think it's going to be Kendall Sanders. He's poised to have a strong season, even with missing the opener, because he brings pretty dynamic speed/strength/hands combo to the slot. The guy I would not overlook is Jake Oliver, who I'm sure will work his butt off and could be as game-ready as Shipley was when he arrived 2 years ago.
What's the key to this Texas football season?
Max Olson (4:54 PM)
Might it be Mack Brown? I'm very curious to see what effect he has on this team. He's the chef and he's got all the ingredients he needs to win a Big 12 title, in my opinion. He's got to have the right recipe to bring this all together.
Any News On The Longhorn Network Getting Deals Done With DirecTV Or Comcast?
Max Olson (4:55 PM)
Sorry, nothing to report there. Not in my control.
Connor Brewer transferring to Arizona. Will he succeed there?
Max Olson (4:57 PM)
I do think so. I like that he'll be surrounded by people from Chaparral like his former coach and Davonte' Neal. I think he can get it done in that offense and by the time he sees the field he'll have spent 2 years sitting out and working on his arm strength and accuracy. I wouldn't sleep on him -- he'll be more successful than Connor Wood (Colorado) or Garrett Gilbert (SMU), I don't doubt that.
Lim Boston (Trinity )
Who ends up with more touchdowns this year. Davis or shipley & why.??
Max Olson (5:01 PM)
Davis. I think he goes for 10. He'll be the deep-ball threat for Texas that Ash finds on PA passes when the run game is rolling. I liked that dynamic of the offense a lot last year.
Will J Gray be the starting RB at the start and finish of the season? I really do not see him having to share carries, I always feel like you are not letting a player develop when you switch them in and out during games.
Max Olson (5:02 PM)
Yeah, I think Gray is in for a 1,000 yard season. He's the guy to me because he's the full package.
Toughest game on the Horns schedule?
Max Olson (5:02 PM)
No. 1 is TCU on the road followed closely by Oklahoma and then Oklahoma State.
Will Applewhite find a way to get Daje the ball? Harsin didnt do that enough
Max Olson (5:03 PM)
Yes. Daje has been working almost exclusively with the wide receivers this spring and summer and I do think he's in for a greater role as a pass-catcher this fall.
Max Olson (5:03 PM)
OK guys, got to wrap this up for the day. Apologies for the late start, but thanks to all of you who submitted questions. Have a great afternoon and be sure to keep reading HornsNation!
