Jesse Rogers (2:06 PM)
Ok, we are ready..welcome to our weekly offseason Cubs chat..plenty to talk about..bartman, managers, Fall League...fire away!
Hi I was wondering is there any chance Mike Maddox gets the manager job? And if that does happen what are the chances Greg Maddox gets the pitching coach job?
Jesse Rogers (2:07 PM)
I know he's interested but doesnt sound like the Cubs are in that mode this time around..two reasons, in my opinion, too much pitching and not enough hitting with the brothers and no Latin flavor there..just not the right fit with what the Cubs have coming up and on this team I guess...or maybe the Cubs are turned off by the fact he turned them down last time...never know though, I just know his name hasnt popped up, especially for a guy thats interested
Other than Acta, Hinch, Renteria and Dave Martinez, who else are the Cubs looking at as a managerial candidate?
Jesse Rogers (2:08 PM)
Those are the 4 that we know of..I still think Alomar Jr has to get a look unless Francona gave him a bad review or something...and it wouldnt surprise me if a name or two is being kept very quiet right now but theyve been fairly open about the top 4 there
I believe Dave Martinez would be a good choice. He has been Joe Maddon bench coach since 2008. Well Joe has had so much success with a revolving roster of young players since Tampa Bay cant pay them. The Cubs roster is very young and Dave, i think would be a good fit to take us to the next level. Do you agree decision.
Jesse Rogers (2:10 PM)
Let me put it this way, I dont disagree...so hard to really know without understanding how he deals with players one on one and even then it becomes different as a manager as opposed to a coach..but, yes, he has the right qualities..and I think one other aspect is that he learned under Maddon AND the GM Andrew Freidman...I think its important that the manager and this front office really be on the same page as much as possible..they are down in TB and Martinez sees how that works
Chad (Whiting, IN)
So assuming this next manager is another placeholder who do you see in the running to be the manager when they could be competing for the division?
Jesse Rogers (2:11 PM)
Nearly impossible to know...but what the heck, Joe Girardi in 4 years? I know, they better contend before then..it could be anyone if they are that close..Terry Francona?
Mike ky [via mobile]
Are cubs planning on interviewing sandy alomar for manager position? Really think he be great manager. Thanks!
Jesse Rogers (2:12 PM)
As of Friday they had not reached out but that could have changed between then and now...hopefully will know more on him very soon...He might be my top choice of first time guys
Do you think Mike Olt will open the season as the Cubs starting 3B or should he be added to a long list of Cubs prospects that never panned out?
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
Somewhere in between? And btw he's not much of a cub prospect..been one for a couple months..sounds like CJ Edwards was the key fig in that deal..anyway, I dont believe he opens the season there but its not like they need to get him seasoning so point being if he lights spring training on fire then he can win it...unlike some other prospects that will prob go down no matter what...anyway, spring is HUGE for him in particular..
Should the Cubs be looking for a veteran middle of order hitter this year (Cano, Beltran, Cruz, Granderson, McCann)? Or trust in Rizzo to take a step forward and wait on Olt or Bryant to make the jump to the big club? Schierholtz remains in mix as well?
Jesse Rogers (2:17 PM)
My feeling? Play this rebuilding out and dont sign that free agent until you know what position you need filled and you are closer to winning..PLUS, and this is key, no one at 30 or over...I know they can have prodcutive years but how many josh hamiltons and pujols and soriano's do we have to see to know FA isnt the way to go UNTIL you;re filling that one need, perhaps...then again, I can be convinced of Cano. Lol. I just think caution is still the way to go for now
Austin (Springfield) [via mobile]
The cubs have a need for a right handed hitting outfielder. Any idea who they might target? If not, who should they target?
Jesse Rogers (2:18 PM)
Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler?...see above answer...I say let the prospects thing play out THEN fill the need when there is a flameout in the minors or major injuy etc.
Hey Jesse, great job this year on writing for the Cubs. So, Bobby Cox made a nice transition for the Braves from GM to manager. Do you see the same type of potential in AJ Hinch or is a Latin American leader desperately needed? Thanks.
Jesse Rogers (2:19 PM)
I think the LA leader is needed but doesnt have to be the manager, can be the bench coach...Im not much of a Hinch guy..cant put my finger on it , really but I'd go Alomar or Martinez first
Looking in from the outside, I got the impression that Dale Sveum was never the choice to lead the Cubs for the long term. Does that impression hold any water, and if so, will it impact managerial candidate's interest knowing how Sveum (and Sandburg for that matter) were treated by management?
Jesse Rogers (2:20 PM)
Nah, it was his first gig..he was a longshot to stay and in his heart of hearts he might know that...gets it on his resume and now he can say he's done it..This was so unique with a total rebuild I dont think it scares anyone away..especially if they start turning the corner
Can you speculate on these San Diego connections? Hoyer, Hinch, Ausmus, Renteria, etc... It's not like the Padres are this juggernaut organization. In general, they are as inept as the Cubs are, and their pitchers benefit from a big ball park. I would rather hear that the bosses are looking to poach on-field staff from a winning organization.
Jesse Rogers (2:22 PM)
Sure, Hoyer was there...Just like any front office you go to guys you know..they should also look outside the box but hirings usually come from their "tree". Now I cant tell you if Renteria is better than the Boston bench coach or Hale in Toronto who they know well...its a roll of the dice to some extent but all great managers started somewhere...
Chris, Orland Park [via mobile]
Is It Me Or Does Theo's Plan On The MajoR League Continuously Swing And Miss (Girardi, Edwin, Castro)? When Will This Patience Brake?
Jesse Rogers (2:23 PM)
There's always going to be misses...hard to say he swung and missed at girardi..the guy was under contract and stayed with the NEW YORK YANKEES...not like he stayed in KC...he also picked up two great arms for Scott Feldman...and three Class A pickups pitched 4 shutouts en route to a championship..anyway, we can play this game all day...have to let it all play out..but you arent wrong about Jackson
adam, mishawaka [via mobile]
Has the thought of Bob Brenly crossed anyone's mind? He knows the system, he has managerial experience and is a WS winning manager. I would love to see him in a Cubs uniform.
Jesse Rogers (2:26 PM)
Is he Sabermetric friendly? Will he have that relationship with the fornt office I was talking about? Will he have the patience with young players..can he relate to a slew of latin players..do they know him well enough, etc? Im not saying no, just that I think the match prob isnt right...they want one of their guy, a forward thinking type that can relate to Latins, etc...dont think Brenly is that guy...Maddon and Girardi are the types they are looking for...
Can we acknowledge that Gonzo's error was a way bigger issue in that game yet?
Jesse Rogers (2:26 PM)
Lets see a FOUL BALL or a double play grounder...it answers itself..HOWEVER, if Alou catches that ball, who knows, they might win the World Series...any out is precise...
Damian M (Downers Grove)
How many years away do you think the Cubs are from being annual contenders
Jesse Rogers (2:27 PM)
Gotta be 2...
Tom Chicago [via mobile]
Jessie is the next mgr. expected to win games or try to develop players.?
Jesse Rogers (2:27 PM)
The latter then the former
Vince Ottaviano (Huntley, IL)
Do you have any idea who the pitching coach, hitting instructor and bench coach woul dbe for the proposed manager candidates?
Jesse Rogers (2:28 PM)
No, though I can see them suggesting Bosio stick around...after that, its up to the new manager
I am aware that Joe Maddon is under contract. But is there any chance at all, that the Rays would allow the Cubs to speak with Maddon if the cubs ask for permission to speak with him??
Jesse Rogers (2:29 PM)
I would doubt it unless Maddon absolutely wanted out...that would be the way...if he went to the Rays and said as much
This seems to be an inflection point in managers. Many experienced guys either have or will soon retire and the next generation is just now emerging. How can a GM predict who will evolve into the next Tony LaRussa or Bobby Cox? Are there metrics for this too?
Jesse Rogers (2:31 PM)
Good question...no metrics..just philosophy...think Angles manager is one of the few true old school guys left...you predict it by leadership qualities (includes teaching in the cubs case) and how they embrace sabermetrics..and how you think they will fall in line with front office...
Do you see the cubs holding onto Barney? At first glance he is pretty awful with the stick, but he doesn't strike out (top 20 in strikeout % in the mlb) I think he would be able to do the little things for a good team, moving runners over etc. to go along with great D. Do you see him sticking around by the time this team will have at least average talent in the league? I think great D especially up the middle (c, ss & 2b, cf) is widely overlooked by the avg fan, and I can see Darwin be a big asset to a good team.
Jesse Rogers (2:32 PM)
Another good question..I think he sticks around until his bat moves him or a prospect just is too good not to play...not many .210 hitters stick but maybe he can bring that back up to .250 range..youre not wrong though, there is value..everyone in baseball sees that.
Michael (Memphis, TN)
Jesse, Will the cubs explore the option of adding dusty baker into the mix of coaching candidates. He's someone who understands the cubs tradition and has experienced success in chicago?
Jesse Rogers (2:34 PM)
Um, no. Just not the right fit with Theo, etc. plus didnt end well here...not sabermetric friendly..he's not bad with players though..but Cubs want the complete package..again, they are looking for forward thinking with a great day to day baseball mind
Mark (Dallas, TX)
What is the Cubs biggest target this off-season? More starting pitching? 2B, 3B, or OF?
Jesse Rogers (2:35 PM)
Starting pitching and OF though dont expect huge names...no way they sign a 3rd or a 2nd, in my opinion
Who do YOU want as the next Cubs skipper? And no dancing around the question...an actual name...THANKS!!
Jesse Rogers (2:36 PM)
Sandy Alomar Jr. with a veteran bench coach, like a former manager that isnt threatening...man, I love Riggleman..would he come here as Alomar's bench coach?
Epstein used the word "creativity" in his definition of leadership in the manager search. Any idea what that means to him, or is it an intangible he feels like he had in Francona?
Jesse Rogers (2:38 PM)
I think he meant guys like Rick Renteria..someone no one has heard of but has some quality they know/see that can bring out the best and do it in diff ways...maybe not the same message every day to a losing team, etc. so yeah, an intangible that might not be readily identifiable
If Bryant keeps tearing up AFL and continues into Spring Training, can he force mgmt's hand and break with the ML team opening day?
Jesse Rogers (2:39 PM)
I want to say yes but I think the answer is no...I think the answer should be yes though...maybe that will change..Ill be at the Fall league next week and will investigate
If you have to wager on who the next skipper is, and when, what's your bet?
Jesse Rogers (2:40 PM)
Best I can do is say Nov 1 and one of the Latin-Americans they have interviewed..still wondering if Alomar Jr will get a look again...
What's happened to your colleague Bruce Levine? I heard him on a different station on the weekend, has he left ESPN?
Jesse Rogers (2:41 PM)
Yes, his deal was up here and he moved on...good man
Jesse, isn't signing Ellsbury a no brainer? That would just solidify Baez or Castro moving to 2B and leaving Bryant at 3B, unless Olt somehow turns back into the stud he used to be.
Jesse Rogers (2:44 PM)
He's 30 and will cost a lot...I just dont know if tying a guy up right now is the right thing..what if Almora is a stud...younger, cheaper, have him for years...lets do this right for once...play it out then sign the right guy that helps put you over the top..the one caveat is they might need one or two now to help show the way..lots of talk that the pressure is all on rizzo/castro..if its me, I hire the manager that tells them to relax, block the noise and that help is on the way soon enough...no shortcuts, the cubs say and as hard as that is, I agree with it..and I dont mean to sound like 30 is over the hill but man it can go quick sometimes..
Tom [via mobile]
Why not offer Baez for Madden? Put the deal contingent on signing Madden long term.
Jesse Rogers (2:45 PM)
As crazy as that sounds the sentiment is not wrong...IF, IF, IF you believe the right leader can be the diff in the organization than its worth one prospect..maybe not your top one though..the idea is tempting...but not Baez..for all we know he's once in an era player..course its doubtful but so far he's shown something special..
We know there isnt going to be a big FA signing this offseason but do you for see another "scheirholtz" type signing, high reward low risk, that we might go after?
Jesse Rogers (2:47 PM)
I think so, simply because they are still holding places for Almora, Soler, etc...but of course all wont pan out..and thats my point..wait until you kind of have an idea who is and who isnt then go for that position...we might be a year away from knowing a lot more..
Jesse Rogers (2:49 PM)
That's it for today...have to go on a toronto radio station and talk about, guess what? Bartman..lots of good questions and sorry and I didnt get to all of them...usually go 1/2 hour in offseason but we might have to do an hour with so much uncertainty with this team..thanks again..follow me on twitter @espnchicubs...next week Ill be at the Az Fall League and will chat from there..maybe with a guest..check out the blog for new stuff daily or close to it! Thanks again
