Jesse has a radio hit with Carmen & Jurko at noon so he'll be a couple of minutes late. Keeep the questions coming and Jesse will be here soon to chat from the frigid pressbox at Yankee Stadium.
Jesse Rogers (1:14 PM)
Hi all. welcome to our weekly chat...This edition is in-game as the Cubs and Yankees have begun game 1 of their doubleheader...I'll watch while I answer some questions. Fire away!
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi Jesse - Jeff Samardzija has a s 1.29 era through 3 starts this year and the Cubs are 4-8, will they or won't they trade Jeff and the other questions to whom and who will the Cubs get in return?
Jesse Rogers (1:16 PM)
Yes it still looks like they will but they should get a huge haul for him if he keep pitching like this...he's been great. Hard to say at this moment where he goes but I still think Atl. is my best guess...At this rate he may bring back that No.1 type prospect they've been holding out for...I love how he's taken a step so far this year
Jesse Rogers (1:16 PM)
Tanaka gives up a walk but that's it. 0-0 Bot 1
Jeremy (Chicago) [via mobile]
Are Olt's early struggles due to his lack of playing time?
Jesse Rogers (1:18 PM)
Hard to say...Who knows why a guy gets cold or hot for that matter.. I don't think it helps though. He's young, just learning pitching at this level and maybe since he didn't start out on fire now he's pressing a little bit more...It's only two weeks..I don't think if he would have played more he'd be much different in terms of BA etc but I do think his learning would benefit by more consistent at-bats..
noah, montana [via mobile]
Any chance the cubs trade some of their offensive prospects like soler and vogelbach in a package for a starting pitcher thats an ace or top prospect thats a pitcher within the next year?
Jesse Rogers (1:19 PM)
Yes, I think that could and will happen at some point..Hard to know when but over the next two years is the window in my opinion. Vogelbach for sure will be in some deal at some point..
Aaron (Chicago, Il)
I know Hector Rondon has the hottest arm in the bullpen right now, and possibly your closer at the moment but what of Vizcaino? Could he possibly your closer in the long run? If so, what would his role be?
Jesse Rogers (1:21 PM)
Sure, they like fireballers that throw strikes so he's a possiblity. I can't say for sure he has the demeanor for it, etc but I can't say he doesn't either. He just needs innings under his belt..And could still be a starter but I like the ide of close for him
Greg (Oak Forest)
The replay rules are terrible. The game was already long enough. There is nothing more annoying than watching a manager stroll out of the dugout, then waste two minutes of our time before deciding whether or not to challenge. Either challenge or don't. Managers shouldn't be allowed to do that. What's your take?
Jesse Rogers (1:23 PM)
I agree with you..this silliness of strolling out while looking at the dugout for a sign will evolve into them just waiting and making a call from where they are sitting..or it should at least..just have your pitcher delay....by the way, Beltran goes deep...1-0 Bot 1
I'm just not drinking the Cubs cool aid. If the goal is to build a sustainable success and a winning culture via player development, we should see winning through the minor league affiliates. But only the Kane County team is over .500. Last year's results, other than Florida, were losing too. How is this evidence of a culture of success?
Jesse Rogers (1:25 PM)
Hard to judge that way..guys are up and down, moving around. Class A was where a lot of the studs were so that's a good thing they won it all. But even that can be misleading. There shold be SOME success down there and there was..Maybe this yr will be Double-A or Triple-A but you can't expect it throughout the system. Doesn't work that way
Brandon Neale (Las Cruces,NM)
When can I expect to see Arrieta back on the mound at Wrigley? And when he gets called up can we expect Edwin Jackson to go to the bullpen?
Jesse Rogers (1:26 PM)
Arrieta is at Double-A today then will make a start at Triple-A then should be ready for the Cubs. I don't think he'll take Jackson's place though I wrote they need to start considering it..He'll replace Villanueva right now
Mark i (Bloomington IL)
Dustin Geiger is a name we done hear much about and he has gotten off to a hot start! Do you project him with the cubs major league team in the future?
Jesse Rogers (1:27 PM)
Yeah, I like him. I can't tell you where he ends up but I do like the talent. Production will tell the story but like in previous answer a few of these young guys will be trade bait at some point
Asked a question last week about how long Theo and co. give Renteria to do what he wants. Seems like they already stepped in with that Veras decision to demote him from the closing role. What does this tell you about their Theo and co's relationship and trust w/ Ricky going forward?
Jesse Rogers (1:30 PM)
We always make these things so black and white but in reality there's a grey area..They talk almost every day and RR isn't dumb. He saw what Veras was doing but he backed his guy right after the game which is normal. Was he told to move him out, probably not but in discussing it did they decide together it's best for the team? That's prob more how it went down...
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi Jesse - The Cubs head into Yankee Stadium and may possibly face Masahiro Tanaka who Cubs missed out on in the free agency. How do the Cubs feel about facing Tanaka and is Chicago looking for a split in the two game series ?
Jesse Rogers (1:31 PM)
They are looking to sweep like any team would. I wrote about Tanaka in the blog today. Take a look.
What are the Cubs going to do about the utter lack of ace-quality pitching in their farm system, and when?
Jesse Rogers (1:33 PM)
Maybe this June..more likely through Fa or a trade..it is a shortcoming...I'm sure they're hoping CJ EDwards is that guy but right now we can't identify a potential No. 1
Jason (ohio) [via mobile]
With Emilio hitting so well at the top of the order could he end up as a trade deadline casualty along with Hammel and Shark?
Jesse Rogers (1:34 PM)
Good question. I just don't know but if I had to guess I would say yes. If he's not expensive I wouldn't mind locking him up because even if not a starter in a yr or two he's still valuable
Joe (Oak Park, IL)
Why don't we see left handed players bunting into the shift when the 3rd baseman vacates? Unless your slugging in north of 1.000 (i.e., you expect at least to generate more than one base per ball in play), you should bunt and take 1st. See Jim Edmonds when cubs used shift.
Jesse Rogers (1:35 PM)
Rizzo has done it twice I think this yr or tried to...I don't disagree with you..You just better be able to bunt but maybe we'll see more and more guys do it with the pronounced shifts.
George G (Berkeley Ca)
Thank you for pushing those questions through and putting some pressure on Renteria... For the record Lake and Olt went back to back the night after the last chat... It was almost as frustrating as watching Neifi Perez and Jerry Hairston Jr start over Todd Walker... With that being said, thoughts on the Cashner-Rizzo trade now that Andrew looks like an ace and has given up about 1 run every 9 innings since last year?
Jesse Rogers (1:37 PM)
It's so easy to do in hindsight..It's not like Rizzo is a washout..but yes, pitching is more valuable than hitting so if their career arcs are similiar Cashner prob the more valuable player...I don't have a huge issue with the trade..
Zach (St. Louis)
Jesse,Obviously nobody including management is expecting us to compete this year. However can we please get some help in the bullpen to close out some of these games??? I am tired of seeing a good effort by our starting pitchers only to be blown by our bullpen/closer. Any chance Theo and the gang bring in some arms to improve the bull pen so we can at least win some of the games that we have late leads?
Jesse Rogers (1:38 PM)
They brought in Gregg last yr so it's possible. I think they like what they have in-house much better this yr so a few guys might get a chance before they do anything more drastic.
Aaron (Chicago, Il)
Right now, in your opinion where do you see cubs by the end of the season? Even though we may not win within our division, but is it fair to say that we'll have a better record than last year come the second half of the season?
Jesse Rogers (1:40 PM)
I think if Baez and Hendricks and/or others are promoted and are doing well I think they could have a better second half than last yr. But everything has to fall into place. A better second half def means a better record, however, losing Samardzija could have a huge affect on this team
Neifi Perez (Chicago)
I read an interesting article on Josh Vitters the other day. Injuries and fielding issues are why he isn't a top prospect anymore because if you combine the parts of his injury filled seasons at AAA in 540 abs he has a line of: .300 24hr 382b 85rbi comparable to the best AAA prospects. Who is to say a move to the outfield and a full healthy season doesn't see him become a valuable prospect or trade chip again?
Jesse Rogers (1:41 PM)
It's possible. You're right, when healthy he puts up some numbers but all in the minors. He's not a blue chipper though prob a secondary piece in a trade..in between a good propsect and a throw in??
With both Tseng and C.J. Edwards having been accused by scouts of having ace level stuff is the lack of top end pitching prospects being overrated? The Cubs also have Hendricks, Johnson and others who rate as more middle of the rotation or back end types. While the top end arms are recent additions, compared to the hitters, they do seem to exist in the organization.
Jesse Rogers (1:42 PM)
I'll say this. I like what they have much more now than a yr ago at this time but do they have a Verlander/Kershaw in the making? I don't see it.
Chris (Park Ridge)
Jesse, I just read that Ricketts is still committed to the renovation. What I have never understood is why the dispute with the rooftop owners is holding up the renovation. I get the outfield signage issue needing to be resolved with them but what about everything else? How is the hotel, etc. being held up by the rooftop owners? Can't that proceed while they sort out the sign issue?
Jesse Rogers (1:43 PM)
He needs the money from the outfield stuff to move on with everything else..what he says is "We need to know if we have control of our outfield" which is his way of saying I want that money before I do anything...
Ruggiano off to a slow start, are the Cubs going to give him some playing time or will he be simply a platoon player?
Jesse Rogers (1:44 PM)
Looks like a platoon but I'm sure if he gets hot he'll get his at-bats...There's about three guys entrenched here..rizzo, castro and castillo
Is there any reason not to play Olt and Lake every day? Valbuena and Sweeney aren't going to be here in 2 years.
Jesse Rogers (1:46 PM)
I don't think there is any reason NOT to play them but I'm not the manager..They would say it's for their own good, to protect them but I look at the other way..let them (potentially) struggle and learn so they're better for it moving forward..you don't learn much from the bench..
Aaron (Chicago, Il)
With the injury to Javy Baez, is there still a possibility that he might get the call to the majors?
Jesse Rogers (1:46 PM)
Of course. Wasn't going to happen next week anyway. As long as it's not long term he can stil get the call-up later in the summer.
Is Darwin Barney in danger of being irrelevant? not playing well, Bonifacio could play 2B every day or have Baez play there when he is called up.
Jesse Rogers (1:47 PM)
I think you answered your own question. Bonifacio slowing down some so Barney might see more time but the writing is on the wall.
Aaron (Chicago, Il)
What's the chances in the cubs re-signing The Shark? I know he's almost 30 but what's a reasonable deal 6 year $85 million? or an 8 year deal?
Jesse Rogers (1:48 PM)
Won't be any 8 year deal here or prob anywhere...more like 5 and 85 or more...Doesn't look like it's happening here.
What is the plan for Arodys Vizcaino? Obviously he is not a Single A pitcher and is only down there for weather reasons. Is it realistic to expect June at the latest? He's already been in the big leagues.
Jesse Rogers (1:49 PM)
Impossible to know because it depends on how his arm responds..IF all goes well over the course of a few months than yes a June call-up makes sense..could be later though...but you're on the right path I think
Non-Cubs related, but who ya got? Hawks or Blues?
Jesse Rogers (1:50 PM)
I think the Hawks will get down in the series then storm back and win it
Jesse Rogers (1:51 PM)
That's it for today. A little shorter than normal due to the game going on. BTW, 1-0 Yanks Top 3. Follow me on twitter @espnchicubs and read the blog every day!! Im jumping on ESPN 1000 at the top of the hour with an update. It's cold here but the stadium is really nice. Talk to you next week
