More Jesse Rogers: Blog
Jesse Rogers (2:02 PM)
Hey folks. Welcome to our weekly chat. Im at the united center. Just got in from last night's game. That was a stinker. All is quiet on the trade front...which sometimes means all hell is about to break loose...but for now, nothing. Will update here as the deadline is at 2 pm. May step away if something comes up. Lets get started!
Adam (San Diego)
I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I read that article about Bowman's radio interview... I hope he's wrong but got a feeling he's not. I'm going to be EXTREMELY disapointed if the Hawks don't make a move for a goalie. The team is good right now; we get a better than average goalie and we're great. After watching last nights debacle I'm starting to believe what Roenick said, the Hawks can't win it with their current goalies.
Jesse Rogers (2:04 PM)
Im starting to buy it myself and Ive supported the goaltedning more than most...IF the hawks play THIER game, they could be alright but we've seen them get away from thie game too often lately and their not being "saved" by their tenders. Problem is there isnt a ton out there and I think Fla. asking price for vokoun is too much--at least in the hawks minds
Eric (Evansville, IN)
What are the chances of the Hawks getting a goalie? Will we see Versteeg and Buff gone?
Jesse Rogers (2:06 PM)
Scotty Bowman said on toronto radio today, they are satisfied with their tenders. That's a bold statement on deadline day...maybe he's saying it cause they couldnt strike a deal...they did look around. there is no doubt about that. i dont see two major players coming off the roster if they do make a deal...just one...maybe thats the sticking point with other teams.
Dave (Glendale Heights)
Hey Jesse...did you notice any "Olympic hangover" last night? Pat Foley mentioned at one point that after that 1st period, all of the Hawk Olympians just didn't seem very sharp. Did you see that as well?
Jesse Rogers (2:07 PM)
I did a little. Hossa really fought the puck...thought kane and toews were ok. keith ok. hard to tell but i didnt think it was a major factor. hey, the first period was great. so they had something in the tank
Do you think the Blackhawks are getting disinterested in the regular season? Could they be looking ahead to the playoffs before they get there?
Jesse Rogers (2:08 PM)
No, they just won 4 in a row...its not easy to win at the pace they had set...san jose lost at home last night, albeight to a good team...sometimes you have to slog thru some stretches...is slog a word?
Hey Jesse, I'm sure the questions on goaltending will be numerous, but what are your thoughts? Have to admit, I was a little disappointed when Bowman said 'no chance' to Vokoun...
Jesse Rogers (2:09 PM)
Kind of answered already. There is no way he (bowman) completely believes they are ok. no way. but if they cant strike a deal, then you have to back your guys so sounds like thats what they're doing. it could be posturing...we'll find out in 50 minutes
Do you think the Blackhawks are better off just keeping Niemi and starting him as much as ya can between now and the playoffs? He has shown the ability to come up in big moments?
Jesse Rogers (2:11 PM)
At this point, without a trade, I would give Huet one more shot then give it to niemi...niemi is better in big moments and bailing out the D, like he did in det. but cant hurt to give huet one more real shot...
I hear people saying that the Hawks have a small "window" of opportunity due to the cap. Unless I am missing something, after the trade of Barker and not resigning a couple of players(Madden, amybe Eager) they should not have to break up the "core" after this season or next. What are your thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (2:12 PM)
They will still haveosme work to do. Remember, kane, toes, and keith's raises will kick in...so they will have to shed
Do you think being named the top forward in the olympics will only help make Toews more confident and a better player?
Jesse Rogers (2:12 PM)
Asolutely...its a growth process and that was a huge step
Should we be expecting any trades
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
Im not going to speculate right now. I have no new info at this moment except as of this second nothing is imminent with vokoun. thats the guy i've been tracking. to me, hes a definite upgrade. the others im not so sure
Do you agree with Coach Q's decision to play the Olympians at their usual ice time or should they be getting more rest?
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
The rest will come...or at least some...
What're you feelings on Brouwer being moved off the Toews/Kane line? I think they really got the most out of his game.
Jesse Rogers (2:16 PM)
i like him there as well. as ive said before, i like bolland with sharp and hossa...we'll see, things will move around with madden back and burish returning
What team improved the most today?
Jesse Rogers (2:17 PM)
So far I like Phoenix. Not that a lot of big names have moved but i like what theyve done
Do you expect a big bounce back performance tonight at home?
Jesse Rogers (2:18 PM)
Yes, and it doesnt hurt to play edmonton. olympians honored. lots of energy in building. vokoun in net...oops. yes, bounce back. not sure whos in goal for either team but that Desalrius character for edm looked liek a deer in headlights last time they played
Are you surprised the Blackhawks weren't busier today with their goalie/cap issues?
Jesse Rogers (2:19 PM)
Well, we are not done yet but yes, a little surprised but maybe they just couldnt get it done.Takes two to tango and they have some bad contracts
Eric D. (City of Wind)
Yesterday you reported that the Blackhawks were talking about trading Huet to Toronto for Jeff Finger. Reports immediately came out of Toronto that it was bogus. Were you misled by a source?
Jesse Rogers (2:21 PM)
Its possible but I was told very specific information...just cause a team denies it, doesnt mean much...luckily i reported they discussed, not that a deal was done...i dont doubt they talked..maybe specifics were wrong...but i stand by it...for now!
in Hradek's chat yesterday, someone brought up a Kane for Tim Thomas straight up trade. Is this the most absurd trade rumor you have heard or have there been worse?
Jesse Rogers (2:22 PM)
One worse...Ryan Miller on the move...yeah, right
Any word if Hawks are making a play for Hamhuis or Wisniewski ?
Jesse Rogers (2:23 PM)
I say no on both accounts. think they are done on defense..just a gut feeling..watch they'll have a blockbuster!
Bryan Hays (Chicago)
Jesse, On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the worst) How bad do you think the blackhawks need another goalie. Watching last night game made me SICK!!! We had 22 SOG compared to NYI 9 or so in the 1st. We were still only up by 1. I could only imagine if the NYI got 22 SOG the score would be way worse then 5-3 considering both Niemi and Huet gave up 3 goals on 6 shots in the 2nd. Do we have a reason to be scared come playoff time.
Jesse Rogers (2:25 PM)
I'll go ahead and say 7...u might think thats low...but thats how i feel...for a while i put it at 5 or 6, but hard to defend...i did say from the get go, maybe the way they were handling Niemi was partly the reason for his success and now that hes getting more time the numbers are coming down...but id put wash at 8
With Quenneville having back to back winning seasons with the Hawks do you expect them to lock him up long term?
Jesse Rogers (2:26 PM)
I do. I think thats the next deal to be done at some point
John (East Moline)
What's the deal with Kopecky? Why can't he bring it for the Hawks like he did in the Olympics?
Jesse Rogers (2:26 PM)
dont have an answer for that
Do you think Q should start playing Seabrook and Keith with others to shake things up a bit? He does it with offense all the time. I know D men usually stay together, but to me it seems 7
Jesse Rogers (2:27 PM)
No. I like the way it is. I do think johnsson should get more time and they should some some mixing and matching when called upon and hes kind of been doing that already.
What other goalies are on the Hawks radar?
Jesse Rogers (2:28 PM)
I honestly dont think any...vokoun was 1 and maybe roloson 2, but i dont think halak was for real, etc.
Elliott (Orland Park)
I'm interested on your take concerning why we have not seen more of Jordan Hendry. I feel Hendry is a better defense man than Sopel.
Jesse Rogers (2:28 PM)
For what they need...shot blocking and penalty killing experience..sopel is the better option.
Do the hawks lack a matt walker type toughness player?
Jesse Rogers (2:29 PM)
A little bit. Burish will help though we know hes not heavyweight
I think were doomed if we can't get a deal for a goalie. Niemi got a couple bad bounces last night, and Huet looked pedestrian when he came in. Do you think they can get past either San Jose OR Vancouver in a 7 game series with this goaltending combo?
Jesse Rogers (2:30 PM)
I do but the margin for error will differ. if they dont pley "their" game and its kind of an even affair with puck posession, etc. then in trouble....
Teemu (North Chicago)
Would you agree with the assessment that the trade deadline is a complete failure for the Blackhawks if they do not address the goaltender situation
Jesse Rogers (2:31 PM)
Cant say that out of hand. There is really only one or two goalies i would take. and what if fla says we want steeg and sharp or no deal? i cant call it a coimplete failure, maybe a complete dissapointment. lol.
Who gets the start in net tonight?
Jesse Rogers (2:32 PM)
Dont know.not announced yet. I would think Huet...just makes sense.
Is there a better all around player in the NHL than Toews?
Jesse Rogers (2:33 PM)
He is up there. Does so many things well and getting better
any chance of the campbell rumor being true?
Jesse Rogers (2:33 PM)
NO. There is no rumor, just wishful thinking by some people
With all their depth at forward, not only on their current roster but in the minors, would they be smart to trade any and all they can for a goalie/defenseman?
Jesse Rogers (2:35 PM)
It would make a lot of sense. but again, would u trade 2 forwards off the big club? thats a tough call
Joe (Joliet, IL)
Jesse, does it get tiring answering the goaltending questions from people that don't understand the sport? The goalies on the market aren't any better than what we have already. The defense has played bad (last night and before the break). It's easy to blame the goalies, but giving up players and picks just to get another guy (Vokoun, Rolsoson) who is on par with Huet is crazy. Enough with the Johnny-Come-Latelys
Jesse Rogers (2:36 PM)
I do think you have a point BUT Vokoun is absolutely better...thats as far as I will go.
Chris Timm (Channahon)
If the Blackhawks stay pat and lose first round as Huet/Niemi get exposed. Or they send Huet to Rockford to clear cap space to pull the trigger on the Versteeg and prospects to Florida for Valkoun. They then make a deep playoff run/possibly win the cup. Wouldn't the franchise more than make up the money needed to eat the Huet contract debacle? Also, further dirt to throw on Tally while propping up the Bowman's.
Jesse Rogers (2:37 PM)
I believe if they went to wirtz and said sending huet to the minors and doing subsequent deals makes the difference this year, he would say ok. its only like 5 weeks of paying him in the minors. i think wirtz would do it. course u still have huet for 2 years nearly untradeable..might have to buy out...not pretty no matter what they do
Besides the goaltending, what is it with the Hawks and the second period lately?
Jesse Rogers (2:40 PM)
Great question. If Q doesnt have the answer than I dont. Its not so much just why a bad 2nd, its why a bad 2nd after a great first..the contrast is annoying. only thing i can think of is things come easy in the first and they think it will continue but you have to keep competing...same answer ive given for a while..i asked Q last night if it was about attitude and he said "tough call." so just not sure
Even though it is looking like the Hawks won't be trading for a goalie, does Bowman have anything up his sleeve by chance?
Jesse Rogers (2:41 PM)
I give it a chance because the hawks keep things very close to the vest...not many leaks so there is hope if you are wanting some
Alright Jesse we all know the Hawks have been the stingiest team in the league as far as allowing shots. We also know that both goalies have said sometimes that can be hard on them. However the defense hasn't been on the same par as it was to start the season. Any chance that helps the goalies going forward or exposes their weaknesses even more?
Jesse Rogers (2:43 PM)
It all depends. Give u an example. last night, i thought roly was just ok in the first but he benefitted from seeing a lot of shots but other than madden a couple times they werent great scoring chances...so the point is, if you can gurantee me shots but not great scoring chances, thats the best scenario for a goaltender..but u just cant make that happen..make sense?
Pat (Burbank, IL)
I can't imagine any team being willing to even take on Huet's cash-money contract without an additional arm and leg for a competitive G... I'm getting worried that we'll end up being ripped off if we move, or cursed if we stay.
Jesse Rogers (2:44 PM)
I dont think your basic premise is wrong..and maybe the steegs of the world make to much as well..remember its not just huet's deal that is inflated...some of those forwards are probably making more than they deserve
So what's your take on Scotty Bowman's comments regarding Vokoun? Was it always a pipe dream or do you think there was more going on there than Scotty is letting on? Thanks!
Jesse Rogers (2:46 PM)
I definitely think there was more going on at some point. every indication was that they were looking. if they werent, thats worse, right!! if you dont have a Vezina winner back there and u have a contending team, u better look around. I think he said that today cause thats what he needed to say, today. if no deal is done, then u may as well back your guys
Chris (Crawfordsville, IN)
Jesse, what do you think it is going to take to have our "bigger guys" (Buff, Eager, Ladd) get to the front of the net and create some traffic?? Saw it during the Olympics that goalies today are good enough that if they see the shot, they will most of the time stop it!! 22 shots in the first yesterday was great, but seemed to be missing that "net presence"?? Your thoughts?!?
Jesse Rogers (2:47 PM)
what will it take?? if Q takes playing time away, that should do it. i agree with you about the first period last night.
You mentioned a steep asking price for Vokoun...any idea was the Panthers are/were looking for off the Hawks' roster?
Jesse Rogers (2:50 PM)
No. that was a little conjecture. i know this: they are not up against it to trade vokoun now cause they could do it this summer. if it was summer, they would be more desperate so thats one reason i htink the price is high. plus, based on what scotty said today, he kind of backed that theory up. he said "no way he's coming here." and its not cause the hawks didnt call. they did. i do know, fla did not want huet back so mayeb that killed it right there...
if we got another strong defenseman, would we need to get a new goalie? Assuming the d play is back to what it was at the beginning of the year
Jesse Rogers (2:51 PM)
thats kind of my feeling. the hawks can win with these guys if they just play their game. my opinion. but im not loving the options back there
From Patrick Kane's interview with Pat Foley, it seems like he has put the Olympics loss in perspective already. That seems kind of soon considering how disappointed he was after the game. Were you suprised by that?
Jesse Rogers (2:52 PM)
No. what are u going to do. they gave it a better effort than anyone, inclding kane, thought they could do going into it. have to move on. makes sense to me.
Are there any "surprise" names out there that could be of interest to the 'Hawks?
Jesse Rogers (2:53 PM)
Based on Johnsson coming out of nowhere I would say yes, its possible. i have not heard anything new today, really
Jesse Rogers (2:54 PM)
Im going to make one phone call right now so cross your fingers. give me a min
Jesse Rogers (2:57 PM)
nope. unless vokoun goes at the last second hes not moving
Jesse, what's your opinion - is Huet gone or staying in Chi-town?
Jesse Rogers (2:57 PM)
since there's 3 minutes left..(though they can get annoucned an hour from now) ill say hes staying
Hey Jesse, any thoughts or rumblings on the Hawks bringing back Wisneiwski to solidify the defense? What about a gritty 4th liner to add some toughness?
Jesse Rogers (2:58 PM)
no on both. burish is the grit, unless they get a more physical type like matt walker or someone like that
Roloson looked better than both Niemi and Huet last night. What's Roloson's contract situation like? Any chance we go for him?
Jesse Rogers (2:59 PM)
one mroe year left. i guess i'd take him. not as high as others but he does have experience.
Huet has been rumored in a trade with the Maple Leafs. I dont see this happening bc they just got rid of Taskala's big contract. Do you think the Hawks regret the big contract of Huet which now is making things hard for him to be moved?
Jesse Rogers (3:00 PM)
yes, they are regretting it for sure.
Is Buff more expendable with the presense of Hossa and his size/strengh?
Jesse Rogers (3:01 PM)
tough call. hossa isnt enough size...moving buff could come back to haunt but if it meant vokoun i might do
Are you worried about the minutes Keith posted in Vancouver?
Jesse Rogers (3:01 PM)
A little. If Q doesnt back off the minutes than yes...
If you can get Vokoun and lose only two above average players, why would you not make that trade? Versteeg and Buff are not Toews and Seabrook.
Jesse Rogers (3:02 PM)
good question. tough call but u could certianly make the case
Chris Timm (Channahon)
Jesse, Heading to the game tonight. easy win but which poor goalie do I have to watch tonight give up 1-3 goals to a pathetic Edmonton team?
Jesse Rogers (3:02 PM)
I dont know. my personal opinion is huet. his turn to start, u have to give him one more chance to take the job
the hawks prob aren't getting a goaltender. do you think they should stick with one guy, back him, so that going into the playoffs they have a confident goaltender?
Jesse Rogers (3:05 PM)
Yes, and that's Q's M.O. he likes one guy..u can switch once u start. i mean u dont get so stubborn u dont switch if one guy struggles. but down the stretch he will committ
Jesse Rogers (3:08 PM)
Thanks everyone. Most of the other questions are trade related. if something breaks late, ill tweet it out @espnchihawks. sign up to follow me now. same with a starting goaltender for tonight...and of course in my blog. looks like its niemi and huet for the Cup. they can do it but the pressure is as much on the guys in fron of them. you can email me email@example.com will meet the media soon here so should be interesting. tune to the radio or my blog for what he has to say. thanks again. chat again next wed. Huge game tonight...not really but they could use a rebound win. take care and enjoy the hockey.
