Jeff Dickerson (12:31 PM)
Just landed at O'Hare thirty minutes ago and I'm now sitting in the media room at Halas Hall. Crazy last few days, but a very impressive win for the Bears. Let's get at it.....
What are the three things the Bears need to do to beat the Packers on MNF?
Jeff Dickerson (12:33 PM)
1. Don't get burned on big plays. Aaron Rodgers is the real deal with plenty of weapons at this disposal. 2. Protect the football. If the Bears don't turn it over, they will be tough to beat.3. Make the Packers one-dimensional. Losing Ryan Grant hurts, so it's critical the Bears don't allow one of the other GB runners to do any damage.
Is Omiyale at left tackle and Schaeffer at right tackle our best option even if Chris Williams can play after hurting his hamstring?
Jeff Dickerson (12:35 PM)
I really don' think so. Don't get me wrong, Omiyale and Shaffer did a nice job yesterday, but the Bears paid Chris Williams plenty of money to be their LT. I don't see them cutting bait with Williams at this point, but he may be forced to miss a little time with that injury.
All the talk "Is Dallas that bad?" Ever think it might be "Is Chicago that good" lets give them a little credit
Jeff Dickerson (12:36 PM)
Bears deserve credit. They made better adjustments and were much more physical than Dallas. But the Cowboys...ouch...they did not look good. This will not be a good day in the world of Jerry Jones.
Has there been any word on why Aromashadu was used so little in the game? He's been the man lately and I can't see why he would be so limited in action.
Jeff Dickerson (12:37 PM)
Brad, the drops hurt him against Detroit. End of story. The coaching staff was less than thrilled with his Week 1 performance after watching the film. He needs a good week of practice.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
What's the most important think you took from the big Bears win?
Jeff Dickerson (12:38 PM)
That Martz can win games for this team. And Cutler played his best game ever...in my opinion.
was it just me, or were you expecting more out of peppers against the dallas oline?
Jeff Dickerson (12:40 PM)
He did have a few deflected passes. But yeah, I thought heading in he was going to be have a bigger impact. But remember, teams always scheme to stop Peppers.
so they played turnover-free football yesterday... clearly that's a big contribution toward the win. but their secondary is where i'm still concerned. romo did not have a good game... even outside of those two picks, he was missing his receivers on easy attempts.
Jeff Dickerson (12:43 PM)
Dallas did complete a lot of passes yesterday, but many were underneath. The Bears did a good job of not surrendering the big play. That was key. But Miles Austin is a great receiver, so it wasn't a shock to see him make 10 catches. But none were killers.
patrick (surprise az)
Do you think dj moores comments about cowboys tight end witten add to the team bravado or go unnoticed for the most part? and should urlacher or lovie tell him to keep his mouth shut?
Jeff Dickerson (12:47 PM)
Sorry for the delay...had to get up and ask Chris Harris a question, he's in the interview room right now. DJ Moore is little crazy. He's going to say whatever is on his mind. I don't advocate that type of talk, but as long as the Bears are winning, it's all good, I guess.
Wanna give Hester some love? He looked legit yesterday and you sure can't hate the one handed grab. #1 he may not be, but he showed he deserves his place in the WR corp, don't ya think?
Jeff Dickerson (12:48 PM)
Hester made a few great plays. But he also had two drops. We all know his talent level is off the charts, but I'm still waiting for him to put it all together one day. I hope it happens.
What was your impression of the new stadium? Favorite thing?
Jeff Dickerson (12:49 PM)
That jumbo screen is sick. It's impossible to miss a play which is pretty cool. it's just an awesome place. Worth every penny.
Milton (Durham, NC)
Jeff, What do the Bears need to do to open up their running game?
Jeff Dickerson (12:51 PM)
That's a really good question. The run game numbers weren't great yesterday, but the Bears were having so much success with the short, underneath stuff, why mess with success? But eventually, conventional wisdom tells us the Bears will have to run the football. But as long as they're winning, how upset can you really be?
Now that the Bears have managed to start 2-0 and seem to be able to step up in the clutch, will a win next Monday over Green Bay make the Bears a serious contender in the NFC?
Jeff Dickerson (12:52 PM)
Yes. How could it not?
Do you have a grade for Tommy Harris in the Dallas game?
Jeff Dickerson (12:53 PM)
I only noticed him on one or two plays. I'll hold off on giving a grade until the coaching staff breaks down the film. But Tommie has been quiet the first two weeks. However, that doesn't always mean he's not playing well.
Nathan (Coralville, IA)
Do you think there is any chance Major Wright becomes a starter once he is healthy? He had two great plays in really limited time this preseason.
Jeff Dickerson (12:55 PM)
Chris Harris stepped up the last two weeks. If he keeps playing this way, it's going to be tough for Major Wright. He's already had two injuries in one year....not good. He may have to miss some serious time because of that hamstring. He looked to be in serious pain yesterday in Dallas.
Alex N. (Lockport, IL)
How much credit does Mike Tice deserve for salvaging the O-line yesterday? The first three drives it looked like Cutler wouldn't get a pass off all day.
Jeff Dickerson (12:56 PM)
Tice and Martz deserve credit. Last year, I don't think the Bears would have been able to make those types of adjustments.
Will the coaching staff talk to Hester about his blocking? He seemed to miss a key block in the 4th yesterday that would have enabled Forte to get a first down. Instead, he was a yard or two short and the Bears had to punt.
Jeff Dickerson (12:57 PM)
Brian, from my vantage point, I'm having a hard time remembering the play in question. But it speaks to the consistency issues with Hester. We see great flashes, but I'd like to see him put it all together.
What was your assessment of Danieal Manning's performance yesterday?
Jeff Dickerson (12:59 PM)
I thought he did a nice job on Jason Witten. Solid opening two weeks for Manning and Harris.
Why don't the Bears make a play to get the holdout LT from San Diego - before Culter gets killed?
Jeff Dickerson (1:01 PM)
Let's first see how serious the Williams injury turns out to be. But I just don't know if the Bears want to spend much more additional money on player salaries. But if they keep winning, and if tackle is a problem, maybe their philosophy changes.
Jeff Dickerson (1:01 PM)
Okay....Lovie Smith just entered the media room. Let's turn it over the Jurko. Talk to everybody next week!
Jurko (1:03 PM)
Dallas was fantastic. What a tremendous stadium and game. I told you the Bears would win. Fire away ...
Jeff (Houston, TX)
Hi Jurko, I was fortunate enough to attend the game yesterday and noticed a lack of quarterback pressure from our Bears' defense. No sacks. I know in the 2nd half Romo was hurried a little but is the lack of sacks a reason for concern?
Jurko (1:04 PM)
I'd hate to go Greg Blache on you but sacks are overrated. But consistent pressure is not overrated and that will lead to more sacks. So let's work on getting consistent pressure.
Jurko why won't the Bears entertain the thought of making a play for Vincent Jackson a big WR with great size?
Jurko (1:06 PM)
I think they are happy with their receiver position and the depth. When the new CBA kicks in, first- and second-round picks will be more important than ever.
Tom (Naperville, IL)
Great to see Greg Olsen get some looks, do you think this will continue?
Jurko (1:06 PM)
Yes, great to see Greg Olsen catch an 8-yard catch and turn it into a TD. He also had another big pass nullfied by penalty. He played big and fast in this game.
Would you say Peppers had a good game? His Chicago career has more games than tackles....
Jurko (1:07 PM)
Yes, I do. It may not always translate on the stat sheet but he is part of that defense that only gave up 13 points.
Looks like Devin Hester is a good short passing receiver if you cut him to the middle of the field then he can get extra yards after the catch? When the corner backs get man on man of Hester then would you say he is a treat for the deep ball to, I see good things for Hester in the future?
Jurko (1:08 PM)
He made people miss on the boundary and in the middle of the field. If he hauls in the big pass then we say he had a perfect game.
Are you kidding, the Bears coaches benched Aromushudu because they did not like his drops in week 1. Did they not see the 7 catches for around 75 yards. And Bennett is terrible, come on coaches!
Jurko (1:09 PM)
I don't know what happened. It could be practice habits were poor and they were sending a statement that you have to produce each week. Judging from the comments in the papers, Aromashodu is taking the message well.
We know the Martz offense is very pass heavy and Forte sure is picking up those receiving yards just like Faulk used to, but will the lack of running the ball effectively so far this season, make it easier for defenses to take down the Bears as the season continues?
Jurko (1:10 PM)
It's concerning. You're averaging from the RB position two games combined less than 3 yards a carry. You can't force the run but somewhere down the line you're going to need it. I hope the Bears figure it out.
Butch (Cal City)
How can we attack Green Bay's 3-4 (weakest link)?
Jurko (1:11 PM)
Quick passing game and then behind the linebackers. The LBs are usually the less athletic and take time to react to the pass.
Jurko - whats the point of having a stud/franchise QB in Cutler and not investing any money (at all) or talent in the O-line? Williams got torn up in the preseason (and yesterday). Tice is good, but can only do so much. It's only going to take one of those early hits on Cutler to know him out (like Stafford)
Jurko (1:12 PM)
They invested in Williams and Omiyale. Your problems come in evaluation of talent. That's where we need to talk to Jerry.
Mike (Mount Prospect)
Are you concerned that Tommie Harris and Mark Anderson aren't putting enough pressure on opposing QB's considering Peppers in taking on double teams?
Jurko (1:13 PM)
Tommie Harris of old is gone. He's becoming a grinder because he has to. A run stuffer is what he is. Mark Anderson shouldn't even be on this team.
If the O-Line is fully healthy, where would you play Chris Williams?
Jurko (1:14 PM)
Right tackle. I'm assuming he's right-handed and that's his strong side so he could keep a solid corner.
Patla (Austin, TX)
What kept Forte from getting more passes thrown his way yesterday? Do you think they were targeting him after the Lions performance?
Jurko (1:15 PM)
Brooking was cognisant of the boundary play up the sideline. Twice the Bears looked for it and twice he was there.
Do you think Lovie will be there next year if hwe have a great season or u think he is still on way out
Jurko (1:16 PM)
Lovie has fired about 20 assistants since he took the job. He finally found his OC and O-line coach. Those guys made the adjustments on offense Sunday so give Lovie credit for hiring the right people finally.
Jurko what do you think about DJ Moore's comments saying "Witten was scared"..alot of talk for somebody who has played so little dont you think?
Jurko (1:17 PM)
D.J. Moore is young and brash. I doubt Witten is scared of anything. He'll learn if it's the truth to keep his mouth shut. Remember, they may meet up again in the playoffs and that comment will rear it's ugly head.
Idonije looks legit as a starter. True or False?
Jurko (1:18 PM)
Yes. He's got recognition of run and pass and good pass rush moves.
Its early in the season, but it seems that after the money we spent on Chester Taylor, if we can't run the ball and he's not being used much in the passing game, do they look to trade him or just keep as insurance?
Jurko (1:19 PM)
He'll be kept for insurance. Guys get hurt in this league.
Michael (Mountain View, CA)
I noticed Desmond Clarke in the backfield on one play. Is this something Martz could use more often to protect Cutler in the pocket?
Jurko (1:19 PM)
Dez is listed as the second-team fullback. So it looks like we are going to see a lot of it.
Do you think the Bears D would be much better had they held on to Alex Brown?
Jurko (1:20 PM)
We've seen everything we could see out of Alex Brown. I liked him personally but eventually you must move on.
How excited should we be about one surprise win? How much should we weigh Dallas's early struggles? What does this do their playoff chances in your opinion?
Jurko (1:20 PM)
I'd be jumping for joy. You went in as a seven and a half point dog and you won a game in the other team's building. It's time to celebrate.
Is it just me or does Hester seemingly NEVER run upfield? He gets an awful lot of return yards....horizontally. I'm tired of his dancing and backtracking for 0 yard returns. Is it time for him to focus solely on receiving? Isn't there a better option to return punts?
Jurko (1:21 PM)
His return skills are gone, fellas. The fearlessness and confidence he showed back there are gone. A thing of the past.
Where the heck did Matt Toeina come from?
Jurko (1:21 PM)
The Isle of Tonga.
The Bears lead the league in rushing defense so far. Do you see it continuing where they will be among the league's best?
Jurko (1:22 PM)
I can see the Bears finishing in the top five in rush defense.
Z (Hoffman Estates)
Looking at the bears next 6 games I can see them getting off to a 7-1 start what do you think?
Jurko (1:23 PM)
Let's not make reservations for Dallas yet. In the preseason I predicted they would start 1-3 and then win five straight. Let's see what happens against Green Bay.
You made a bold call on Chicago this past weekend. Do you have the intestinal fortitude to do it again this weekend?
Jurko (1:24 PM)
You will have to give me a couple of days to get over my victory hangover to provide in-depth analysis. I will provide that answer on Friday.
The Bears offense looks great when they get protection. Can they survive as a "catch us if you can" style team, or do they still need the defense to step up to win consistently?
Jurko (1:25 PM)
They are going to have to rely on the defense all year. Most great teams do whether it's advantageous field position or to score.
Butch (Cal City)
as a fellow EIU alum, do you get rock star treatment like Sean Payton treament at EIU? How do we address 3rd & shorts?
Jurko (1:25 PM)
They treat all former players great at EIU. If you can't run the ball then throw.
I forgot about Toeina! Will we start to see more of him on the field? He appeared to make 2 great plays, but how was the rest of his game?
Jurko (1:26 PM)
Yeah, he's part of the rotation, guys. He's about a 20- to 30-play a game guy.
Greg (Dallas airport)
Last week I asked why the Bears dont run some differnt plays in the Red Zone such as throwing some jump balls instead of all the predictable run plays. I have to admit you were pretty condescending in your answer, so tell me jurko howd that jump ball to Forte work for you? Looked pretty good from my vantage point at cowboys stadium. Game Set Match!
Jurko (1:28 PM)
It was a fade route. He didn't even have to jump, the ball landed on his hip. There was a two-way read to Hester. If the corner moved up on the flat route you go to the deep ball, you go to Hester. A jump ball is something you do at the end of the game, like a Hail Mary. Even when you throw a bomb, that ball to Knox wasn't a bomb, It was meant for a specific person.
Are our coverage units a concern? Seems like Toub is working with a lot less than in the past.
Jurko (1:28 PM)
It's the hardest part for a special teams coach, losing players you trust and then re-training guys you don't.
No, seriously, was this a fluke game for Toeina or does he have some game?
Jurko (1:29 PM)
No, Toeina had a solid game. The game is slowing down for him. He's starting to feel things rather than look for them.
I was surpised to read and hear plenty of love from the Chicago Media for Frank Omiyale. What did you think of his performance?
Jurko (1:30 PM)
He did an oustanding job after initially struggling and was pressed into action on the opposite side. When somebody does a good job you've got to acknowledge it and he did a good job.
Jurko (1:30 PM)
That's all. See you on Friday!
