More Jesse Rogers: Blackhawks blog
Jesse Rogers (1:02 PM)
Hi all, welcome to our weekly blackhawks chat. Hawks and Preds just finished up practice before tonights game here at the united center. Last game before the holiday break for the hawks. they will have the next 3 days off. anders lindback will play in goal for preds unless there is a last minute change...hawks lineup same as last 2 games..stalberg could have played but after 2 wins Q wants to keep it the same and give him the extra days...hossa should be ready by sunday, finally. and kane skated today and is doing better. fire away with questions! lets talks some hawks
Chris (Cubical City)
Do you think it was right for fans to boo Cheli? Any chance #7 makes its way to the rafters in the UC?
Jesse Rogers (1:04 PM)
No, I think its was silly to boo him. He dropped the puck and they played a few hilites, big deal. Not life and death. He didnt choose to get honored. And no they wont retire the number
Brian King (Minneapolis, MN)
Do you think the increased ice time for Soupy and Hammer will continue? Keith and Seabs have had two of there better games since Soupy has been on the ice more. I am also happy to see Hammer to be playing better. Is he leading the league in blocked shots?
Jesse Rogers (1:06 PM)
Not leading the league in blocks..dont think hes real close but hes taken the place of sopel in that dept. thats for sure...Q mentioned with only 1 minor penalty called last 2 games, seabs and keiths minutes came down and he wouldnt even admit they play better when the numbers are down but I think they do. Anyway, each game will be different but I think u will see a more even distribution of minutes though keith will still lead in more games than not
Fitz (My Cube)
JR, are the hawks playing it safe with hos and kaner or has there been set backs....starting to get a little nervous.
Jesse Rogers (1:09 PM)
Def no setback with hossa. seen him skating hard for long periods of time...i think he could play now but since hte schedule is so light a few extra days could make the differnece between 90% and 100% or what not...Kane had to test the ankle so I dont have a prob getting on and coming off BUT did he test it too soon? maybe. Wasnt even 2 weeks. It will be 3 on sunday and I dont think he plays then...so they MAY have miscalculated but its not an exact science with an injury like that...kane MIGHT linger a bit..hossa wont
What do you think of Ryan Johnson? On paper he seems to be just what the doctor ordered, good on the PK and in the faceoff circle. Perfect fourth line center in my opinion, and on the cheap!
Jesse Rogers (1:10 PM)
Yeah, pretty obvious to coaches in just 2 games he has more going for him than potulny..the defensive part of it especially and with another center, it frees sharp up for wing...very obvious sharp can concentrate on offense playing with toews...nice addition so far...plsu i like his size..and he didnt have camp or antyhing so hopefully he's just getting started..not a bad pickup out of nowhere
Aaron (St. Charles)
When did Bryan Bickell turn into Patrick Sharp? He's got a heckuva wrist shot.
Jesse Rogers (1:12 PM)
Yes, he does. I think its surprising goalies so we'll see what happens a few times through the league..but the biggest thing is how accurate it is...HUGE goals for him so far..if he gets to 20+, thats a nice find
Hey Jesse, heading to the game tonight. I've heard Chicago and Nashville have had very physical hockey games the past few years, including the playoffs. Should I expect any different tonight?
Jesse Rogers (1:13 PM)
Dont think so..without Hossa and Kane it should kind of be a grind it out affair..hard to tell how physical but def a grinders game...interested in Shea Weber vs hammer/Crawford..blcoking/stopping his shots, not easy.
Dallas....Contender or Pretender?
Jesse Rogers (1:14 PM)
Ill go contender..I like the makeup...Not just saying that cause they are good now..I didnt like the Blues even when they were going well but I do liek this team. Nice surprise
Judging from your feel on things, what the odds on Kane, on Hossa, and on Stalberg for Sunday?
Jesse Rogers (1:16 PM)
Lots of questions about the injuries..gave some info in my open, etc. I would say 100% on stalberg, 85% on hossa, 35% on Kane...stalberg could always be a healthy scratch if they win again and Q wants to keep it the same but hes ready to go
Can you explain how waivers works in the NHL. I see Cullimore was put on waivers last week, but he's still playing...I don't get that...
Jesse Rogers (1:18 PM)
I cant tell you exactly why they did it, but putting a guy on waivers is not the same as releasing him...he's put on waivers and if another team grabs him, hes gone but if he clears hes still on your team and now can be sent down at any time...Q mentioned something about putting him on before the holiday trade freeze which began at the beginning of the week but Im still not sure why..thought they might send him down to save money but they didnt..maybe tomorrow? anyway, sounded more procedural but I guess they were willing to lose him
Mike (Chicago Area )
With constant team injuries, do the black hawks have a shot at another title?
Jesse Rogers (1:20 PM)
Yes, none have been earth shattering and in the long run--as long as they make it--it could benefit them...after a short summer, guys could use a mid-seaosn break so maybe hossa has more for the strecth plus the other guys as well..but you have to get there and not expend too much energy in doing so..its a fine line...but none of the injuries have been devastating. any good team should be able to survive one or two guys down at any one time.
jacques (new-brunswick canada)
when the hawks were doing bad before the detroit game, iron mike(keenan)with the blink of an eye ,he would send a couple guys down rockford bring a kyle beach ,exelby to wake the team up ,is it still possible to do that?
Jesse Rogers (1:21 PM)
Of course it possible..thats not Q's style..different ways to get the point across..he has toews, thats more than enough..not to say your suggestion wont work as well
Will Scott v. Westgarth become a tradition when the Hawks play the Queens? They seem to enjoy pounding on each other.
Jesse Rogers (1:22 PM)
Maybe..scott told me today, he knew he would come back at him...scott said hes a tough kid...too long of a fight for him though..got tired
Brian (Hammond, IN)
Jesse, Please tell me that I just happened to miss a suspension that was given to the guy that hit Victor Stalberg. It was a hit from behind, boarding, he left his feet to deliver the hit, and Stalberg hasn't played since then. The hit was clearly way worse than the hit that Hjalmarsson was suspended two games for dishing out. Please tell me that I just missed hearing about the league's discipline.
Jesse Rogers (1:23 PM)
You didnt miss it..I only saw one replay but dont recall leaving his feet but more important, no hawks complained and stal didnt say much bad about it either..they would be the first so not sure but like I said only saw it once other than live
Mike (Oak Forest, IL)
When do you think Turco will get another start that isn't due to back-to-back games?
Jesse Rogers (1:24 PM)
I would say when Corey has a really bad game or just looks fatigued...wont happen right now cause schedule is light...play back to back right after new years..maybe he gets one next week..it picks up again
Hey Jesse,Have there been any rumblings around the organization to add someone at the trade deadline? I would think they have got to be thinking of adding someone to the third defensive pair given the struggles that group has had all year.
Jesse Rogers (1:26 PM)
Yes, defense is the target. Maybe even a top 4 guy. Kim JOhnsson was considerd that and they did that in a year where they're top 4 were very good..this yr they have been shaky..there will be some guys available, especially in the east..Joni Pitkanen,Bryan McCabe to name a couple from the east but not sure what the hawks can afford..a forward could always go back...if not top 4 then bottom 2 as well so there are some options in New Year
Jesse..are you more supprised by how successful the PP has been or by how much the PK has struggled?
Jesse Rogers (1:28 PM)
Not the pp...love that first unit...PK, a little..loss of madden and ladd, even burish BUT they still have so much talent there...mostly been a prob with blueliners.and they have been avg 5 on 5 so it makes sense they might stuggle 4 on 5...
Corey (Cincinnati, OH)
Jesse, why are injuries in the NHL so much more secretive and hidden than any other sport? In football the public knows exactly what an injury was just hours after it happens, whereas in hockey it's just a general statement and we may never know what an injury actually was.To relate that to the 'Hawks, can we assume that Kane has a nagging ankle sprain and just waiting for it to feel right for him on a daily basis?
Jesse Rogers (1:29 PM)
Yes on Kane...and Im with you about the injuries...so stupid. next time I see bettman going to tell him how dumb it is..if they want more coverage they need to allow more info, etc. Every other sport is more open about it...this B.S. about other teams going after guys is so old school..everyone knows kane's ankle is bothering him..he doesnt have to show us exactly where..and there are so many less cheap shots these days cause they call them so I think the whole thing ia archaic
Do Haviland and Kitchen define their responsibilities like an offensive and defensive coordinator in football, or do they all just focus on coaching all phases of the game?
Jesse Rogers (1:31 PM)
Def defined..haviland handles offense..kitchen the defense...responsiblities are defined within those parameters though there is some crossover
Jesse Rogers (1:32 PM)
Hard to say...definitely a good shot and a hot stretch but not sure he can create for himself..you can get to 20 with those skills but not much more..I think the hawks would take 20 from him for sure
I'm going to the game tonight... who is your pick for the GW goal?
Jesse Rogers (1:32 PM)
Aaron (St. Charles)
Is Rinne back in net for the Preds tonight?
Jesse Rogers (1:32 PM)
No, Lindback..unless last sec change
Kenny (Smithtown, NY)
Even when Hossa, Stalberg and Kane return, I think Sharp should remain at wing. That said, is there a second line center out there on the cheap Chi can acquire? Maybe Langenbrunner or Arnott of NJ for someone like Brouwer or Kopy? I know the cap is an issue but any names you've heard?
Jesse Rogers (1:33 PM)
Havent heard too much about the centers..gave you a couple of D-men...more on that list as well..hard to get a 2nd line center...i think the addition of johnson opens up sharp for wing longer term
Matt (Iowa City, IA)
The Hawks signed Ryan Johnson last week. What role does he serve and what does he bring to the team? And do you see him staying in the lineup when the injured players return?
Jesse Rogers (1:35 PM)
I think he stays because he plays center and hes bigger than potulny or dowell...but either way you have four centers in toews, bolland, dowell, and johnson...good defense and pk and decent size..
Awesome job with the Chat and your updates! I know the Hawks like the Defensemen carrying the puck, but do you think P Kane(when he comes back) could do that effectively - he seems to breakdown the opposing team D and find the open man. I would like to see it more often. Your thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (1:36 PM)
He does it on the pp but hes a winger so hes not going to be back behind his own net 5 on 5...once in a while he grabs it in the hawks zone and takes off but its not designed that way except sometimes on pp
Kurt Kohout (Green Bay, WI )
The Hawks seem to have a number of promising young prospects within their system. In your opinion, which ones have the potential to have a solid career at the NHL level? And which ones, if any, have the potential to be a star in the NHL?
Jesse Rogers (1:37 PM)
I think they obvious ones are leddy and morin..diff positions so not sure who is ahead of who but both stood out in camp, especially morin..and i realy liked his last stint here..so there is my answer for now...Marcus Kruger over in sweden is another name to look for..he will be here next year is my guess and I did like igor makarov..I think he will be an NHL player but not a star
Chuck T (IL)
Why no Stalbeg, I thought he was cleared to play?
Jesse Rogers (1:38 PM)
Sounds like Q liked what he saw last 2 games and stal did have a dip there for a while plsu cant hurt a couple days off the ice with concussion like thing..not the biggest deal
I read that Evgani Nabokov is coming back to the NHL, do you think the hawks will try to go after him?
Jesse Rogers (1:38 PM)
Mike (Lincoln Park)
Where do the Hawks sit "cap wise" right now how much room do they actually have?
Jesse Rogers (1:39 PM)
They have very little room. less than a mil at the moment I believe but that doesnt mean things cant get done if they get creative
Who gets sent down when Kane, Hossa and Stalberg come back?
Jesse Rogers (1:42 PM)
I dont think anyone has to cause that would put them at 23...but to save money I dont see them carrying that many..maybe thats why cullimore was put through waivers so when they come back, he goes down..think they will send one down...has to be him i guess..dont think it will be johnson or dowell but could be wrong...
If you had to put a seed on the Hawks right now for the playoffs, what would you guess they end up as?
Jesse Rogers (1:43 PM)
Boy, tough one...I think they move up to 6
Paul, South Side [via mobile]
Seems like team's play is coming around finally. But if the Hawks struggle the next month or so could we see some vets moved(turko, Campbell, etc) and see them go with the youth in the minors?
Jesse Rogers (1:44 PM)
Prob not cause in the NHL you have to be really bad to give up on a year...its always tight unless you are just rebuilding..now could they trade turco, for sure if someone has an injury and needs a goalie but they wont just unload..
Not a big hockey but how good are the Hawks compared to last year on the local news they imply they are struggling.
Jesse Rogers (1:45 PM)
They are but this isnt the time that matters..this is all about positioning and building chemistry..you do want some cushion so every game in march and april doesnt have to be played like a playoff game..its simply a diff teams trying to find its way...but its slowly getting there..just dont want to be too slow
Do you think Toews has a chance at the Selke this season? I thought he should have added that to his haul last season.
Jesse Rogers (1:46 PM)
Tough call there..I agree he should have been a finalist last yr..He's plus 6 not bad, not the greatest..It depends on the competition and I havent thought about that award nor see enough in the east to know for sure..hard to beat datsuk and that game
Will (Clarendon hills)
Is it the right choice to commit Morin to the World Juniors?
Jesse Rogers (1:48 PM)
I guess I can live with it..would feel better if hossa or kane were back now...but they were needing defense mroe than offense anyway..if one or more are back on sunday, its ok but I didnt love the idea with 2 oe 3 guys banged up
What is Scott's purpose if he's not fighting? He can't skate, he can't hit, and he doens't seem to open ice for anyone either.
Jesse Rogers (1:48 PM)
Disagree on some of that...fine in the off. zone.not so much in his own but fighting and cycling the puck is enough in my book for a guy that size...hes won me over, albeit I dont expect the world from him
With all you know now...would you have let Hammer walk to San Jose and used that money on Niemi or do exactly what was done and overpay for Hammer?
Jesse Rogers (1:50 PM)
Well, that requires a lenghty answer..I like Hammer as much as the next guy but I liked niemi as well..think hes much better off if hes here...turco came real cheap so I can see how they were interested but cheap and not very good doesnt help you...I think they had high hopes for crawford as well at a decent price so its hard to argue with the logic except anyone that watched turco-in my opinion--cant be surprised that hes not the player he once was
David eglit (ct)
Pat Foley was right on the money in the Kings game when he said bluntly far too many times this year the Hawks have not stood up for each other when an opposing player takes liberties with some of the Hawks players....what gives? At times we are too nice I think
Jesse Rogers (1:52 PM)
Maybe..I think the guys that can do that are either reticient or green...like browuer, or dowell (though he has fought). there arent a lot of go getters like burish, etc. so its fine a line but some of them have to develop into it if they can
Santa Clause (North Pole)
Niemi's line currently reads 6-8-2 with a .897% and a 3.16GAA. I know you like the guy, but it's obvious he's not at the same comfort level he was last year. Perhaps his agent should have tried to make things work with an organization that coddled him. Can we stop invoking his name everytime the Hawks get a soft performance in net?
Jesse Rogers (1:54 PM)
Someone just asked me about him..first time i invoked him..BTW, the organization did eveything BUT coddle him but thats for another time...love people still blaming the agent when the hawks let a 27 yesr old stanley cup winning goaltender walk for NOTHING... and he goes to a solid organization and gets the raise he wasnt going to get here...
Jesse, As many have said, the Blackhawks have been up and down all season, coming up with some impressive wins and some baffling losses (Wins over Detroit and LA but losing two in a home and home set against Colorado). What do Joel Quenneville and the rest of the Hawks need to do in order to start winning with a little more consistency, and return to the playoffs this year?
Jesse Rogers (1:54 PM)
Top 4 d-men have to show consistencey, especially keith and seabrook...simple as that
Steve (St. Louis)
Any more word on what the Hawks are going to do with Cullimore after the whole waivers situation?
Jesse Rogers (1:55 PM)
No, like I wrote before, maybe he goes down when all are healthy...other than that, not sure why they did it when they did...the WHEN is the point
Hey Jesse- Really pleased with Skille and Dowell especially on the forcheck. Seems like our guys who get up the ice and force the action are doing better with +/-, (Cambell as well). Any ryme or reason?
Jesse Rogers (1:58 PM)
With forwards, a lot of that can be who they play against, same with D actually..but you are right skille keeps it moving in right direction.dowell has been ok..nothing bad, nothing great...I think its more about the matchup than anything with +/- but if it was bad we would notice and make mention so they are playing well enough
Sam (Lake Bluff)
When Hossa and Kane come back how do you think the lines will change? Do you think Bickell will start to see more ice time if he keeps playing well?
Jesse Rogers (1:58 PM)
umm, yes the lines have to change by definition when they coem back.doubt brouwer stays on the top line where he is now
Is Brent Seabrook on the trading block?
Jesse Rogers (1:58 PM)
No. If somehow the season goes south than he might be...
Hi Jesse. Regarding the salary cap next year, I've heard a lot of people say the Hawks will be in the same predicament as they were last year. Will we not see an increase in the cap, and approximately $4-5 million come off the books for the bonuses? Sounds to me like we'll be in fine shape next year having the money to bring back Seabrook, Brouwer, Stalberg, Crawford, etc. What do you think?
Jesse Rogers (2:00 PM)
It might go up some..but they will always be in some crunch with so much committed to kane, toews, SOUPY, hossa, and keith...but yes, they can manage to re-sign most of those guys depending on the demands...
How much is Turco to blame in the last outing? His defense turned over the puck on about 3 of those goals. I still think Turco is a good goalie, but his defense isn't helping him. Thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (2:02 PM)
We can break it down a bunch of diff ways...yes, defense has been avg but are they all of a sudden great for crawford? Even if they are, then you still have to play him cause for whatever reason they are more confident in front of him but more likely its that hes bailing them out more after mistakes...simple as that..no D is going to play perfect, the other team get chances too..goalie has to be good enbough...crawford has been better than turco. end of story.
Jesse Rogers (2:03 PM)
A few more before we call it a day. Good questions this week
Paul, NJ [via mobile]
Jesse, if they could do it, any chance the Hawks would move Campbell for some cap space and bring up Leddy and maybe Morin full time?
Jesse Rogers (2:05 PM)
The short answer would be yes becasue that would help them in a number ways regarding cap but something like that is more likely for the offseason..I mean campbell is still a decent player that can help you now. more than leddy cause of experience..hard to say what the right combo is but taking away from the core and replacing with a prospect or two usually isnt the formula to win a championship that yr
what are your thoughts on the HBO show with the pens and caps? i think its pretty cool to see all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on every day
Jesse Rogers (2:06 PM)
Yeah it is cool..wish the cameras were there even more..coaches meetings..coaches and players meetings but its still cool anytime you get behind the scenes stuff
McMahon (Bearsss Busss)
Is it just me or does it seem the Hawks d-men (especially Keith) are getting a large % of their point shots blocked (by a forward or d-man) this year? It's very frustrating when it seems every 3/4 are getting denied.
Jesse Rogers (2:07 PM)
Q talked about that yesterday..thinks the other teams are keying on keith and making a point of sending winger out to him...need to take advantage by moving the puck quick or skating around that winger...
Koltun (Madison and Morgan)
Not sure if you have been following "24/7" on HBO covering the Pens and Caps, but one thing I found interesting is that the Pens GM and Head Coach meet daily and continuously "rate" each players. Are you aware of similar type conversations taking place between Coach Q and Stanley Cup Bowman?
Jesse Rogers (2:08 PM)
Defintiely..all the time..every game they are rated..quaterly meetings, etc. coach/gm always evaluating
This season has had ups and downs and injuries and what not. Who in the locker room has kept the most positive and upbeat attitude with all the new faces in the room trying to live up to last year. I assume it would be Toews but does anyone else stick out?
Jesse Rogers (2:09 PM)
Hmm. yeah, Toews for the most part...guess sharp as well..
You said you didn't want to forecast too much until the 30-game mark. We're at 35. What do you see? Is this a playoff team? Better yet, are they a threat in the playoffs?
Jesse Rogers (2:12 PM)
Definitely a playoff team..Im sensing a 2nd wind after New Years..not uncommon for cup team to go throug what they did....and to be honest if Crawford was this good from the start and was the starter I see 3-4 more wins in them..no one knew it would go down this way so not saying they should have done it but I think they played a little better than record would indicate...if he doesnt break down i think they do go on a run..they're kind of on one going back to circus trip..those colorado games derailed them...no avs in playoffs..they scare me.
On the NHL network show Oil Change, they show the Oilers coach talking to his players before a game against the Blackhawks and he tells them to hit 2 and 7. He says they are not used to that. It was one of the games the Oilers beat us so it seemed to work. How can they not be used to getting hit? Are other teams using this strategy this year?
Jesse Rogers (2:13 PM)
Long story short, they were so quick to the puck and up and out of the zone last yr they didnt get hit much..for whatever reason it hasnt happned this year..and believe me those are every team's instructions, especially with keith
Jesse Rogers (2:15 PM)
That is going to do it for today...check out my blog today/tonight for the latest on the game withe preds...have a great holiday everyone...follow me on twitter for all the latest @espnchihawks...you can email me at email@example.com..do it again next week...prob a little later, returning from st. louis that day...need another win tonight with 3 days off, would be nice...thanks for all the questions
