Chat with Jurko
Welcome to ESPNChicago.com! Former NFL veteran and ESPN 1000 co-host of "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" John "Jurko" Jurkovic stops by Thursday to chat.
Jurko played in the NFL for 10 seasons, including stops with the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Send your questions now and join the chat Thursday at noon CT/1 p.m. ET!
Jurko (1:02 PM)
The Bears were a pleasant surprise vs. the Falcons. I think the Bears are doing some stuff defensively that confused Ryan. I don't know how much of what they've done will confuse Brees. Welcome to our first chat.
Moses Fernandez (Sandy, Utah)
Jurko, I want to send out my condolences to Mr. Brian Urlacher and his family. Much love from from Salt Lake City, Utah!
Jurko (1:03 PM)
The ESPN family also sends condolences to the Urlacher family. The grieving process is different for everyone. Hopefully No. 54 will be at the Super Dome.
Jamar Williams (unemployed)
With the Bears thin at LB, why haven't I been brought back?
Jurko (1:04 PM)
Jamar you had your chance and didn't capitalize. They know what they have with oyu and would rather find someone else.
Jurko I met Silvy last night out at a bar in Geneva, when are you and the CJH gonna come out west?
Jurko (1:05 PM)
We were out there 2-3 months ago. As far as appearances, Silvy has cornered the market.
Big Jay (Virginia Beach, Va.)
Hey Jurko! In the event that Lach does not play Sunday, do you think Lovie and company will play Briggs in the middle and Iwuh on the outside? I feel the middle is more complicated than the outside position and experience is vital there. How do you feel about that?
Jurko (1:06 PM)
Roach goes into the middle. He was there when Lach got hurt. Briggs stays in position he's been a Pro Bowler.
Baltimore maryland [via mobile]
How far do you think the ravens will go?
Jurko (1:06 PM)
I like what I see, but the defense is old. My concern is defenders breaking down from injuries.
Jim (Bradford, MA)
I think key will be d-line pressure on Brees obviously. With that said, I think without Colston and maybe Moore....the blitz may help more than hurt this week. Thouhts?
Jurko (1:07 PM)
If you can get pressure with 4 get pressure with 4. If you're not, you have to bring someone. I don't know if they're less vulnerable because the QB can still put it in spots.
Mike (Lake Forest, IL)
I think Nick Roach would be a great back-up, but I don't believe he's a true starter in the NFL. He looked lost out there last Sunday, and there was even one play where it looked like he was running a route instead of being in coverage. Do you think the Bears have too much trust in him? Also what will it take for the Bears to sign a guy like Lofa Tatupu and move him to the strong side and assemble the best linebacking core in the league?
Jurko (1:08 PM)
On one play I saw Peanut go into coverage on a run play. Maybe you confused the two. Roach played that position before and did it well. Your concerns are how will Iwuh play at outside backer.
Who is more valuable to their team, Roberto Garza or Matt Garza?
Jurko (1:09 PM)
Robert Garza because the Bears look like they're going to win.
Chris (Kansas City)
Lance Louis looks doubtful, correct? Who's the best option on at the guard spot? Spencer or Edwin Williams? And who will actually get the start? Most importantly, is either one of them capable of keeping Cutler from getting killed?
Jurko (1:10 PM)
Chris Spencer is best option. And DL for N.O. without Smith does not intimidate me. The Blitz package is what will be complicated. Gregg Williams is the def coordinator.
Josh (Atwater, CA)
Who do you predict will get the most reps at Free Safety throughout the season, Meriweather or Wright?
Jurko (1:11 PM)
I think ultimately Meriweather, especially in the second half of the season. He'll become more comfortable with Lovie's defense.
MOst analyst still dont respect the Bears. They feel they are a team waiting on the mistakes to happen. I see them as a team flying under the radar in a sense when it comes to the media. Do you believe they will grow and get better or was this just a game they played above their true potential.
Jurko (1:12 PM)
I think they will grow and get better. The only thing that can hurt this team is the OL getting Cutler killed. If Cutler is out or too many Olinemen banged up, that's what can hurt this team. Lot of coaches coach conservatively capitalizing on opponent's mistakes.
Rod (Ray's Evergreen)
Best tacler ever, best when you played, and best now?Use your Jurktionary more!!
Jurko (1:13 PM)
Best one when I played: Spielman. Best one ever: Tommy Nobis. Best now: Willis.
If the game was tomorrow and Urlacher and Chris Harris are out... Do you see the defense having enough to stop a powerful NO offense? Bears win? Concerns with the lack of depth in the defensive backfield? Sorry that turned into 3 questions.
Jurko (1:14 PM)
My concerns are not with Harris, if Urlacher doesn't play they lose. I don't care about Chris Harris.
Trevor (Angola Indiana)
Is Spaeth primarily a goal line tight end?
Jurko (1:14 PM)
He's your base package, two TE tight end. Good blocker can be used as weapon at goal line.
Did you see the Saints game last week? The Saints may be the only team worse than the Bears in "short-to-go" situations.Kreutz got beaten pretty bad at the point of attack. It made me feel a little bit better that we couldn't hold on to him.Thoughts?
Jurko (1:15 PM)
They are bad. And they are worse than the Bears in short yardage. All that will do is frusrrate an OFf coordinator. You get to that short yardage and can't run? Makes you left handed at the goal line.
peter (new jersey)
If you had to choose between Meriweather and Chris Harris (both UFA's at the end of the season), Who would you rather resign?
Jurko (1:16 PM)
Haven't seen enough out of Meriweather and Harris is getting up in age. He's not premier safety.
7-9 this year Jurko?! How do you still justify your Bears prediction for this season without sounding like nothing but a hater?
Jurko (1:17 PM)
I can't justify it. It was my initial feeling. The QB has improved mentally substantially. His mind set is more positive. And I underestimated the strength of the defense, specifically Melton's impact.
Ken (Tinley Park)
Jurko! Hows it going. First I want to send my condolences to the Urlacher family. With that said, what's the game plan if he doesn't play on Sunday?
Jurko (1:17 PM)
I think he's going to play, so I don't think it will be a concern. otherwise, take the Saints minus the points.
Hey Jurko, is Pisa Tinoisamoa healthy now? Any chance the Bears add him, they sorely need depth at LB.
Jurko (1:18 PM)
I don't think he'll be healthy until Nov. 1.
The Bears had some big 20+ yard plays against the Falcons, but unless they got those big plays the offense stalled. Will they work on sustaining drives to keep Brees off the field or will they still use the home run strategy.
Jurko (1:18 PM)
They were all short plays that turned into big plays. Hester run after catch. All short plays designed to sustain drives. You break a tackle make a move and turn them into big plays. No bombs.
Ken (Tinley Park)
Who's more likely to get a TD this week...Sanzenbacher or Da Bears "D" ?
Jurko (1:19 PM)
Bears D and/or special teams.
Adam (Mattoon il)
Will new comers okoye and Merriweather get more time this week against saints?
Jurko (1:19 PM)
With Harris hurt, Meriweather should get more reps.
Justin (Winfield, IL)
Whats up Jurk? Will this be Chris Harris' last season in Chicago if Meriweather plays up to his potential?
Jurko (1:20 PM)
Could be, again it all has to do with a cap friendly contract by Harris. Going into next seaosn he'll be older and I don't pay 32 year old safeties. If he's willing to p lay for 1.8 or 1.7 he can be on my team. If not, find someone less expensive.
Darth Ditka (Sunny Florida)
So, when the Bears start off 3 and 0 by drubbing the supposed top three darlings of the NFC....will they finally start getting some respect? :)
Jurko (1:21 PM)
I believe so. Two years in a row, I believe so. I still think it's a fragile respect, based more on defensive dominance than overall offensive skill.
Jason (Los Angeles, CA)
Hey Jurko,Which position group suprised suprised you the most in the win over ATL? My vote goes to go with the the WR's.P.S. Much love goes out to Urlacher and his family.
Jurko (1:22 PM)
Ditto. Knox seems to have his head on straight. Found a lot of space in zones. Roy Williams did what he was supposed to. Length and height helped him make the grab.
Nathan Vasher (Somewhere)
Man...What happened to me?
Jurko (1:23 PM)
Nate you started believing your own press clippings. If you don't work and bust your butt you get soft. I said you got soft my friend. I said you lost your nerve.
Heard Urlacher is back at Halas today? Hate to Brees or any other QB that faces him this year! Will be a man on a mission! Don't you think?
Jurko (1:23 PM)
Bear down Chicago Bears ... Urlacher is playing on Sunday, I'm getting that feeling. Just a hunch.
sam (iowa city)
Is there any reason to read into the depth chart at WR? Or do you believe the opponent and gameplan will determine who gets more targets?
Jurko (1:24 PM)
I think the Bears have a gameplan going on but will be able to adjust as the game unfolds to decide who gets more balls.
How are the Bears going to prepare for the noise in the Dome? Will the offense change because of it (snap counts etc)?
Jurko (1:25 PM)
They bring in stereo equipment and pipe in noise like jet planes taking off. All types of stuff. OL will probably hold hands. The guard can hear and when the snap is made the guard lets go of the hand which tells the tackle it's time to go.
Matt Forte (Chicago)
Jurko... did i play good enough to get an extension ? Angelo wouldnt sign me to see what AP's status was, Now sice AP is signed u think ill get a contract soon ?
Jurko (1:27 PM)
Don't hold your breath. I think you're going to get paid more when you do sign as opposed to if you signed in preseason. Gamble will pay off.
David Upchurch (Chicago Illinois)
Would you say that given the Bears Defensive age, this is the one of if not the last year of this teams window? Briggs is gone after this year, C. Harris also. Peppers and Urlacher probably only have 2 or 3 years left. The future for the D look bad. I think by the time the Defense falls apart the Offense will be one of the best in the league. Just seems like the Bears can never have both at the same time.
Jurko (1:28 PM)
Briggs isn't going anywhere. He has 3 years left on his deal. He can cry and whine and be a baby but they're not going to let him go. The only way he doens't play is if he holds out. I think this defense still has 2 years left. As long as Peppers is around you'll be alright. You have young DTs in Amobi and Melton. Tillman is only 30.
Spicy Italian (Bun)
Jurko -- if you were a sausage, what kind of sausage would you be?
Jurko (1:29 PM)
Cody (St. Louis)
Hello Jurko, I am the guy you sat w/ on the way to Dallas that lost his wallet. Give the Bears some love! Why can't they be playing in Indy this year for the SB? I'll buy the rounds when we get there!
Jurko (1:30 PM)
Glad you finally found your wallet. I-L-L-I-N-I. I'll meet you at St. Elmo's for the Super Bowl. Bears.
Jurko (1:31 PM)
I've got the Bears winning this week. Bears 34, Saints 24. See you next week.
