Jesse Rogers (1:02 PM)
Hi all. Welcome to our weekly Blackhawks chat. Im at the United Center where both Chi and Buffalo practiced this morning for the 6:30 pm start time.Ben Smith replaces Bryan Bickell in the lineup. Crawford in goal. Might be Enroth in goal for Buff..fire away with questions. Lets talk some hawks!
Jim (Northwest Side)
Jesse. We have 4 rookie forwards on the squad right now. Too many obviously for the duration so my question is this. Which of the 4 is the best trade bait to get that coveted 2-way 2nd line center? Trade Hayes while his stock is up?
Jesse Rogers (1:05 PM)
Very hard one to answer because different teams have different needs. Kruger, because he's a young center who already has the defensive part of the game down is attractive. Hayes cause of his size...People would be dumb to dismiss Shaw considering his skill set and hockey IQ...Smith might be behind those guys cause his game isnt completely defined, not that any are but whoever Stan trades with is going to make the demands on which prospect they want...so its not necessarily about which one the hawks "want" to trade...
What kind of presence do guys like Shaw and Hayes bring to the locker room? Do they have the same intensity off the ice as they do one the ice?
Jesse Rogers (1:06 PM)
They're pretty quiet in there. They know their place. Hayes especially. But Shaw too. Seems like Shaw has more media around him so he's asked to talk more about himself but they arent the life of the party in there nor should they be
Mike Gray (VP)
What do you think will end Kane's goal slump? If Stalberg can be ignited by playing with Kane and Towes...Then do you think the opposite is happening for Kane? It just doesn't seem to be working out.
Jesse Rogers (1:08 PM)
The last two games have been better. He's starting to get better chances like the one Niemi made the save on...At least his playmaking hasnt taken a major hit as some of his set-ups have been grade A. Wouldnt mind seeing him go to the net more..but that line was great last game so hard to criticize just cause he didnt score..itll end when it ends..I dont know when
JR, Im really interested in your Gleason, Ruutu idea. What will it take to get that deal done? Smith, Pirri, Kruger, Bickell?
Jesse Rogers (1:10 PM)
yeah, something like that...maybe throw in olsen in there instead of 4 forwards..but along those lines...maybe one less player and a couple top draft picks..but you're on the right track..
Brett (DeKalb, IL)
Most of the games the Blackhawks seem to be losing they give up multiple bad goals so do you think getting a solid top 4 defenseman is a bigger priority than a top 6 forward, especially when Sharp comes back healthy and Hayes and Shaw keep performing very well for rookies?
Jesse Rogers (1:14 PM)
yes, a top 4 defenseman would be more important if he's legit. A top 6 two-way centerman would still be more important than say a 5/6 d-man...its not about the rookies or the offense..its about puck posession and keeping it out of the hawks zone...they need a D-man that can do that cause having one that just plays well in his own zone isnt enough...they need to keep it out of there..that's their game
Jeff R (Dallas, TX)
Counting all the idiotic things I am sure I have asked you - what is the most ridiculous "rumored" trade you have been approached with from a fan as the deadlines have approached?
Jesse Rogers (1:17 PM)
Haha. Well since Buffalo is here...Kane for Miller is/was pretty absurd. Not because Kane is untouchable but because why tie up that kind of money in a goalie who is good but he hasnt carried buffalo on his back anywhere special..if the last 2 years proved anything, the hawks have the team to win with cheaper netminders...anyway, i think that's just one of many
Should we be surprised that we're seeing the 'Hawks have success without Patrick Sharp? On one hand I'd think they'd miss his goal-scoring ability but on the other I'm really liking what I'm seeing and hearing about the new kids.
Jesse Rogers (1:19 PM)
Kane said it yesterday, not in a mean way of course, but lets see when they hit the wall..they will. they are human. its going to happen in some capacity..prob during that 9 game road trip..these guys havent experienced travel at all in the NHL yet..been home for 2 months...so dont think for a sec this is going to be all rosy for 4 rookies who have never played a season in the NHL...it will happen at some point so sharp will be needed of course.
Has Keith played too many minutes the last few years? He seems to have lost his elite defensemans status and hasn't played as well as he did when they took the Cup.
Jesse Rogers (1:21 PM)
Maybe. He's better than he was last yr but not as good as the year they won the cup when he won the norris. Not sure what's happened to his offensive game but at least his plus/minus is very good and he and seabrook are playing decent enough as a tandem..but youre right he's not at that elite level but he's still pretty good in my opinion
Jimbo (Lemont, IL)
What is a realistic expectation for the Hawks as the trade deadline approaches? Everyone has a "fantasy" deal but what are your thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (1:22 PM)
Ive mentioned before..I dont think they get the biggest of names that people THINK are avail like nash, or the big ana guys....but a roy from buffalo or ruutu from carolina, or maybe koivu from anaheim...and i bet the same for D-men..they will be names hard core fans know like Tim Gleason but the casual fan will have to look them up...so I guess "second tier" center and d-men if thats what you want to call it.
steven (rockford, il)
Jesse, i love your analysis and opinions on the hawks and wanted to know...doesnt it seem like kane is just sitting back and not even close to the puck? last game he was better, but i caught kane barely skating and the puck was by the opponents goalie and hes still at center ice?!! whats going on with him!
Jesse Rogers (1:25 PM)
Listen, he's an offensive player..he'll save his energy for that end of the ice...but that's ok, if he's producing..hes getting helpers but not goals so I know hes going to get scrutinized..I dont disagree..if youre not producing you do need to do more somewhere on the ice...he could be better but he could be worse too..some of those setups have been Grade A..last game that line was great including him
Jesse, do you see a situation where the Blackhawks DON'T make a trade? If so, what is that situation?
Jesse Rogers (1:25 PM)
None. they will get a d-man, even if its a scrub. they will do SOMETHING.
Any word as to whether Bowman is leaning toward a top 4 d-man as first priority (i hope) or a 2nd line center at the trade deadline? and whats your opinion on the hawks biggest need?
Jesse Rogers (1:28 PM)
I think they are paralell deals if you know what I mean...whichever one is "better" for the hawks..meaning lets say , the forward and d-men rate the same..then its about what he's giving up and how long the player is signed for, stuff like that...I would guess if he could really get a legit top 4 d-man, it would be there...and that's the way I would go...so hard to make this judgements without knowing the players but certainly D are always coveted and to get one which provides depth and moves guys down a notch or what not..that would be huge...center helps big too though
Lisa (Northwest Side)
With Carcillo gone for 6 months and his contract up at the end of the season, what are the odds the Blackhawks give him another shot next season? Have they had enough or do they need to see what he could (potentially) bring?
Jesse Rogers (1:30 PM)
I (kind of) believe Q when he says he's liked his season so there is a chance but I just doubt it. Too many reasons..they have guys coming up, he's coming off a major injury...but, ironically, I dont think the suspensions play a big factor like most people think..i dont sense they are "fed up" in any way..that last one where he got hurt wasnt "dirty" in anyone's mind around here. not at all.
Rory Fitzpatrick (Wal-Mart (free wi-fi))
Jesse, do you think Stan is the type of GM to make a bold, blockbuster deal if it's out there? Lots of rumors, but I would think he's more likely to just tinker a little considering how well the hawks have played all year.
Jesse Rogers (1:32 PM)
It's a good question. On one hand I might answer you the jury is still out on whether Bowman would make that big one to put his name on but then again they have been preparing for this since jettionsing so much money in the off-season. So my answer is yes, he'll do it if its there..but what is its a tough call..4 prospects for a second tier player or something? Im as curious as you are
Jason (Elkins WV)
Where can we find a Shaw jersey??? I do not remember better chemistry in a long time between two young players as I saw last game between Kruger and Shaw.... is this the Hossa effect or do we have something here???
Jesse Rogers (1:33 PM)
Might be the Hossa effect but these are two players with high hockey IQ for their age so there might be somehting there...I still think we have to be careful projecting any of these guys in a 4 round playoff scenario...cant have that many rookies playing prominent roles..at least I dont think so
Kruger, Smith, Shaw, Hayes, Olsen -- rank in order of most important to keep to least important.
Jesse Rogers (1:37 PM)
Oh man. Thats a tough one...Cause diff positions, etc. And I dont know if you mean for this yr or long term. Since no one has solidified that 2nd line center position, kruger is up there..Ill say kruger/hayes (tied), then olsen/shaw (tied)..then smith...but man that could change...I dont know what this 5th round pick can do? maybe he's the real deal...so hard to answer at thisstage of career...Hayes size and hands and now skating put him way up there cause those are hard to find...Kruger cause of center gets points for that..tough one
Hi Jesse, To what extent do you believe Scotty Bowman is involved in making decisions with trade deadline approaching? Im sure we will never really know, but is there a 'think tank' approach with coaches as well or is just Stan?
Jesse Rogers (1:39 PM)
It is def a think tank and he is involved for sure..he has a title so why wouldnt he be..def a collection of minds..maybe more than most teams or at least as much
Better goaltender duo: Crawford & Emery or Neimi
Jesse Rogers (1:41 PM)
Niemi..but not because of any personal bias..but because he's WON A CUP. Shouldnt even be a question at this point. People do not realize how hard it is for a goalie to play well for four rounds and either not lose one series for his team or go out and win a round or two for his team..niemi did both...when craw comes close or does it, he gets that kind of consideration. But how can we downplay a cup wininng tender? Many top rated teams have faltered in the playoffs cause thier goalie was outplayed...craw had one good series, which he still lost. they have to catch niemi not the other way around
Jesse, no one has talked about Hjalmarsson in what seems like months, but after an average start to the year he's been rock solid in his own end and even seems to be chipping in a tiny bit offensively. Thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (1:43 PM)
I think he is another guy that people would miss more if he wasnt in the lineup..it is not easy to play Defense in the NHL..hes still young..Im not saying I love every aspect of his game..he doesnt look to initiate the offense or shoot much and he has some issues in his own zone..but bottom line, you could do worse even at his salary..I dont have a major issue at all with hammer just some minor ones..he's better than last yr thats for sure
Jesse, do you think Kruger can hold down the no. 2 center spot even into the playoffs? If so it would give us a lot of flexibility in terms of trading for winger/center instead of just a pure center.
Jesse Rogers (1:45 PM)
Maybe. I wouldnt say no. But I'd like to see more points and playmaking ability..Not there yet. He's a year early for that role..I think they still look for a primary center..Could use the depth anyway...
Hi Jesse, When the trade was made with Toronto for Stallberg with Versteeg, honestly, I knew the Hawks are going to love him. I always knew he had it in him, amazing how a little confidence has changed his entire game. So on that note How about Luc Shenn from Toronto? Solid defenseman, 4th overall I believe.
Jesse Rogers (1:47 PM)
Probably a bunch of reasons that trade doesnt happen but at the top of the list would be money..they cant tie that much up in their defense..already have 4 making pretty good buck and leddy will be soon enough...unless one went back to toronto..so I doubt it
Petite Feet (Feminine Step)
Jesse, I know some hockey analysts want to get rid of the all star game and others find it entertaining. What's your take?
Jesse Rogers (1:48 PM)
Im caught in the middle. I'd like to see them play for real..some checking even, etc. Will never happen..just wish the incentive was bigger to win..its why I initially liked what baseball did but thats not the way to go..make it a money incentive..a big one...maybe some goes to a charity and some to players pockets...anyway, I would not get rid of but tweak some more
Petite Feet (Feminine Step)
Jesse, if the hawks acquire a top 4 d man who drops down? My guess is Leddy, just seems like he's earned the ice time...
Jesse Rogers (1:49 PM)
Def Leddy. No doubt in my mind...not just cause of recent play but age, etc.andthe top 3 are set
Gerald (Atlanta, ga)
Fantasy trade, would you trade Keith & Sebrooks straight up for Nashville's Weber and Suter?
Jesse Rogers (1:50 PM)
Yes, but dont tell them I said so. But all GM's would Im sure. Nothing against 2 and 7 but weber is the best of the group there...
Why do the hawks allow themselves to be consistently out hit by better competition? Hits often free up the hitter or other hawks to take possession of the puck. It is part of the game. Hits don't have to be crushing blows - just enough to tie up an opponent. Love watching Shaw play the game the way it needs to be played (so far).
Jesse Rogers (1:53 PM)
Because they are concerned with winning games and are built for that..the hit stat in the boxscore is very misleading...think about it, if you have the puck twice as much as the other team, youre probably going to get outhit twice as much right? you dont deliver checks when you have the puck..det is the same way..can you argue with either team's records over last few yrs..their game is skating and of course you have to take the body when you can to get the puck the hawks arent overly obssessed with it and dont pick up players who do that solely, if that makes sense..
Petite Feet (Feminine Step)
Jesse, let's talk power play. What's the issue; entry, shot selection, over passing, or are pucks simply not finding the net?
Jesse Rogers (1:54 PM)
Def shot issues from the point. They have one goal from a d-man from the point. Thats crazy...Montador was put back on the point with one instruction: shoot the puck..its the point man who are causing the issues in my opinion
Jesse, I hear another rumor about trading for Miller..crawford and a rookie as potential trade candidates. What is with all the hype over Miller? He hasn't been the same since he won the Vezina just like Keith after winning the Norris. Do you think this trade has potential? I sure hope not.
Jesse Rogers (1:55 PM)
NO NO NO. Seriously, these are made up rumours. Trust me. Its all nonsense.
Could the Carbomb injury possibly be a blessing in disguise? Your piece on Hayes being a front-of-net, Buff-like presence sounds like a better benefit than Carbomb could have provided. Front-of-the-net play has seemed like a big weakness since Buff left to me...
Jesse Rogers (1:58 PM)
Listen maybe Hayes and Shaw are going to be great the whole time but lets see what a playof run brings..I dont know what the answer is but my point is Carcillo has been there before, there has to be some value in that, right?? hate to say I dont know but 30 teams inclduing the hawks passed on shaw for four rounds..in fact for 2 yrs and four rounds so no one knows...its a good start, thats all we know...same with hayes..I could tell you I like Shaw's IQ but who knows how his body reacts to the travel, etc. we'll find out together and then we'll know if they miss bomb or not..right now, they dont
Jesse, I just don't see Stan being as bold as Dale in making moves. He has done well with the salary cap, but i don't see him rolling the dice in a big way like Dale did. Hope i'm wrong.
Jesse Rogers (2:00 PM)
If I had to agree or disagree, I would lean towards agreeing but thats the beuaty of it, we could be proved wrong tomorrow..or right come March 1...and I actually think he's going to do at least a decent sized one..meaning ruutu or gleason type or koivu, etc.
Jeff Thorsen (Bartlett)
Jesse, what are your thoughts on Corey Crawford and his play? It seems at times he is the victim of poor team defense, but on the other hand, he can seem completely lost at times. It doesn't appear he is ever the direct reason we win games. I am interested how you think this situation will play out down the stretch...
Jesse Rogers (2:01 PM)
Its a vaild question..since his benching hes been pretty good..can cut down on a few bad ones here or there..if youre asking me if Ive lost faith..right now my answer is no. vancouver last yr has t ocount for something so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...1st period against det was great, better in shootouts and break aways, not elite but 2nd tier..so thats no so bad..at least in my opinion
How much of an impact has Toews had on Stalberg's game? His puck possession and accountability look night and day. Is this a trend or do you expect a drop off. He's rather streaky.
Jesse Rogers (2:04 PM)
I'd like to see 25 do it against the elite teams..its why Sunday may have been his best game though SJ had no legs..thats not a good trait when facing stalberg due to his speed...still want to see more...and I wouldnt say for sure hes locked into the top line thru the year..I still believe he could be a mean 3rd line player come playoffs nect to bolland..blowing bby 2nd or 3rd d-pairs which he wont see with 19 and 88..but hey, hard to argue with what he;s done...7 against columbus though so again need to see more against elite defenses
Why do the Hawks have problems with effort and commitment from some of their veterans on a night-in, night-out basis? Especially in their own end - some of the teams they play seem much more physical and just plain working harder.
Jesse Rogers (2:05 PM)
Because thats hockey...if it was THAT bad they wouldnt be at the top of the confernece..did you notice joe thornton or marleau the other night? its part of a season..you just better have more ups than downs...and the hawks, based on their record, have had that
Jesse, seems likely that Bickell will be the odd man out if the Hawks are fully healthy and rookies stick. If sent down does he clear waivers?
Jesse Rogers (2:06 PM)
I dont think he would clear waivers cause his salary is minimial but I dont know for sure..there is always a team that can use a gy like him, some size, was here for the cup run...so I would guess no but considering his year I could be wrong
With carbomb out and Scott rarely playing, are the hawks too soft? do you think other teams will try to push the hawks around?
Jesse Rogers (2:08 PM)
Sure, because its one way to beat them IF you can do it. But you can get caught up in trying to beat them up while stalberg and kane are racing down the ice...but it can work and teams will try
Why do the Hawks seem to allow the opposition to consistently have second and third chances in front of the net all year long. I beleive it will be their nemesis when we we look back in a few months. They need to clear the zone aggresively. Why is this not being done?
Jesse Rogers (2:10 PM)
The best answer is their d-men arent built to do it. Maybe they didnt need to do it much over the past few yrs or maybe the hawks dont develop or pick up guys that do that well..they want transiiton players..Im convinced thats what they saw in montador though I dont think hes done it as well as they would have liked. Doesnt mean you cant learn it but they want the puck and move it out..problem is you're simply not always going to have it...plus its a bit undersized on D after seabrook..thats an issue too...
Hi Jesse,I have a technical question for you...who's responsible for keeping track of players time on ice, and how the heck do they do it?
Jesse Rogers (2:11 PM)
They have a group of scorekeepers that keep track of all that stuff from up near the pressbox. not that hard. but a bunch of people do it. not just like one guy for all stats
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
That's going to do it for today. Great questions. Not too many crazy trade scenarios so that's good. Follow me on twitter @espnchihawks and tell your firends to as well..and check out my blog..w one on one video interview with P.Kane should be/will be in there from morn prac today plus other new stuff...some good stuff on shaw coming in next 24 hours as well..also of course postgame blogs after the game tonight...you can email me at email@example.com if you need anything else. talk to ya next week and enjoy the game tonight. its at 6:30 pm on nbc cable netowrk thingy
