Nick Friedell (1:01 PM)
Hello from Milwaukee everybody. Let's get this chat rolling ...
Angel (South chicago )
Hey nick will loul deng play tonight?
Nick Friedell (1:04 PM)
It doesn't sound like it. Deng did some extra work this morning with assistant coach Adrian Griffin, but Thibs made it seem like he was still a day or two away. I think Butler has a better chance to play tonight.
With the acquisition of Augustin, which is more likely: Teague getting sent down to the D-League(or traded), Mike James getting waived, or neither?
Nick Friedell (1:07 PM)
Nothing at the moment. As Taj Gibson said the other night, the Bulls are happy to have Augustin because it means they have another body. They are too banged up right now too send anyone away and Thibs said that Mike James is still recovering from his knee injury. The safest bet is that Teague heads down to the D-League at some point in the near future. He needs to get his confidence back and work on his jumper.
If they know they won't keep Deng, with the team having no chance of winning, why not trade him for the best you can get now, so we don't have to worry about him getting hurt (again).
Nick Friedell (1:10 PM)
Harry, I've been saying that for weeks now. The issue for the Bulls is that there isn't much of a market right now for Deng given how much he is owed the rest of this year and the fact that he can walk and become a free agent at the end of the season. No team wants to give up a future first round pick for a guy who can walk at the end of the season. As of now, it doesn't seem like the Bulls would get much value back in any kind of deal. Gar and Pax have to just hope that Deng can be healthy and a team gets desperate.
Do the Bulls honestly believe that a lineup of Noah, Mirotic, Deng, Butler, and Rose can compete for a title next year?
Nick Friedell (1:11 PM)
The front office believes they still have a chance to win a title -- but I think the chances are higher that Deng isn't back next season.
Mike (Chicago, IL)
What did you think of that marriage proposal during the Heat game? Just donno how I feel about dressing up a inflatable Benny the Bull and bouncing around for 5 minutes before the big ?
Nick Friedell (1:12 PM)
I thought it was cool. After all the bad wedding proposals I've seen at games over the years -- at least this one had some creativity.
How good would the bulls be with a starting line up of rose, snell, jimmy, mirotic, noah...... contenders?
Nick Friedell (1:13 PM)
Good enough to probably get beat in the second round of the playoffs.
Josh (Deerfield, IL)
Why not just amnesty Boozer and re-sign Deng? I think Deng is much more valuable to the Bulls than Boozer is. or do the Bulls plan on spending money on a big FA like kevin Love instead?
Nick Friedell (1:14 PM)
Here's a question for everybody -- if you were Gar and Pax, how much money/years would you give Deng in the off-season? Or would you trade him now and move on?
Should the bulls just tank this season with rose out and hope to get jabari parker or andrew wiggens? The Spurs did it.
Nick Friedell (1:16 PM)
It's time for the weekly reminder that Tom Thibodeau won't let any team of his tank. The sad part for the Bulls is that they are still playing hard right now -- they're just losing. In the end, it may be better for them, though. What are they really playing for this year?
Matt (Los Angeles)
What's the long term plan for Taj? There's a lot of hype about Mirotic coming over, which leaves Taj in a backup slot. Would that ding his confidence and actually hurt his play?
Nick Friedell (1:18 PM)
Aside from a longer stretch in his rookie season, Taj has been coming off the bench most of his career. Whether he turns into a starter or not, I think his confidence will remain the same.
Brian (Woodridge, IL)
Would the Knicks give the Bulls a 1st round pick for Thibs? This marriage of injury proned players and his "play them till they drop" mantra doesnt seem to be working.
Nick Friedell (1:20 PM)
The Knicks seem to be running low on first round picks they can actually deal. Howard Beck tweeted yesterday that the next time they can deal a pick is 2018. If any talks between the Knicks and Bulls ever got to a serious level in the future you can bet the Bulls will be asking for the Knicks to find a pick (or two) somewhere before then.
Here a question for you, we all know the Bulls are in basketball hell right now. If you were the GM what would you do or what can you to get out of this Hell Hole.
Nick Friedell (1:23 PM)
Here's the biggest thing that has to happen for the Bulls. They have to hope and pray that Derrick Rose comes out of his latest surgery and becomes the Derrick Rose of old again. They don't have a lot of other choices. Rose is locked into a max deal for three more seasons after this one. The Bulls could deal some of their core for picks -- but if Rose doesn't come back as Rose -- nothing else matters.
Boston Joe (Chicago vis Boston)
My friends and I have had this argument several times and we need your stance. Does Coach Thibs hurt our chances in free agency? My friends are convinced his intense approach, commitment to defense, and track record of overworking players is unappealing to stars. PLEASE answer!!
Nick Friedell (1:25 PM)
Thibs is one of the most respected coaches in the league. Kobe, LeBron, Durant, they all sing his praises. But it's always different hearing about him from afar and then experiencing his intensity first-hand. It's a good question and one there are a lot of different sides to. I'd still say that Thibs is a huge asset for the Bulls -- but it definitely takes a certain type of player to play for him.
Rob (Chicago Heights)
If the Bulls do end up trading Deng some time this season, is there a good chance they would miss the playoffs? whats the lowest you think they would finish in the east?
Nick Friedell (1:27 PM)
I still don't believe this Bulls team will miss the playoffs -- even if they do deal Deng. Once Butler comes back and Noah starts playing better -- they still have some solid pieces. Plus, the East is absolutely awful
Thibs asked Snell to guard Melo a lot of the game. Is he finally coming around on developing our young talent by putting them on the floor or was that really his only option. I would have expected to see Taj on him much more than he was.
Nick Friedell (1:31 PM)
I'm sure Thibs just wanted to see how Snell would respond in that kind of environment against Melo. Remember, he did the same thing in Jimmy Butler's rookie season as well.
Why won't the bulls try to trade for lil Nate Robinson before the deadline??
Nick Friedell (1:34 PM)
To all the people who want Nate Robinson back, answer me this question: Let's say the Bulls made a deal for Robinson down the line, how much better do you think they would be with him? Would they go any deeper in the playoffs? Nate was great during the playoffs, but whether he came back or not this year wouldn't make that much of a difference. The Bulls would be better just not that much better.
Matt (Los Angeles)
Is Erik Murphy the new White Mamba? Could the Bulls get Scalabrine to come back and mentor him?
Nick Friedell (1:37 PM)
Murphy has impressed the coaches with his work ethic. As far as the Mamba goes -- always remember that there's only one White Mamba.
Does Jimmy Butler's role change now that Deng is hurt? Will he have plays run for him like Deng did?
Nick Friedell (1:41 PM)
Thibs hinted a few days ago that if and when Butler does return, he would be doing so from the bench. That way, Tony Snell could continue to start and Butler could build his way back up again and get back into game condition. We'll see what Thibs decides.
Chad G (Chicago)
Have the Teague trade talks officially died? I mean Im not an NBA player but watching him looking completely lost on the court is just terrible. If the Bulls "shopped" him.. is it possible to even get a decent role player?
Nick Friedell (1:43 PM)
Chad, there are a lot of GM's out there who have made some bad deals so anything is possible -- but what team out there do you think would give the Bulls a future asset for Teague right now? They watch the games like everybody else. He has no confidence in his jump shot right now.
Nick Friedell (1:46 PM)
All right everybody -- I am out of here. If you're at a game this week come over and say hello.
