Caron Butler (4:00 PM)
Hey Mavs fans, hope you guys had a good offseason. I know I did. Now let's get down to business. Here we go.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Which NBA team do you look forward to face each year?
Caron Butler (4:01 PM)
The Lakers. they're the champs, it's always great to play against the reigning champs. They're still the team to beat until somebody dethrones them.
Hi Caron, Do you still chew on straws, during the offseason?
Caron Butler (4:02 PM)
of course, definitely. I chew on straws during the offseason and the season still. It's not a fine because I don't chew them on the court. when I get on the bench for a rest I get a straw.
dallas #1 fan (plano)
Are you planning to stay in Dallas after your contract expires?
Caron Butler (4:02 PM)
I have no idea.
Matthew (Columbia, NJ)
Hey Caron, what is it like having Mark Cuban as an owner?
Caron Butler (4:03 PM)
Interesting (laughing). It's always fun. You get the opportunity to have a hands-on relationsnhip wiht a team owner, that is rare. He is truly passionate about the team. I can text him anytime like my best friend and he texts me right back. He's the only billionaire I know, too.
Caron Butler (4:04 PM)
I think we got what it takes. I really do.
Caron Butler (4:04 PM)
I think we matchup pretty well with them. the key to our team is its depth. the starting five is one thing, but our bench as well, we're just deep all around. we're a really good team on paper. Training camp starts tomorrow and we have to put it all together.
Do you like to play 2 or 3 next season. Are they planning on you to come of the bench or to start?
Caron Butler (4:05 PM)
I like playing either the 3 or the 2, it doesn't matter as long as I'm on the court. I'm not at the point of my career in which I feel I'm declined so I feel I'm still a starter in this game.
Mike (Pittsburgh, PA)
Caron, what have you done differently, or the same, during this offseason to prepare for the new season?
Caron Butler (4:07 PM)
Things I've done the same are ride the bike, work on strength and agility on the football field, I do a lot of dynamics on the football field. Something I've done differently is going to Tim Grover's in Chicago and working on explosiveness and things like that. That's really helped a lot.
#1 fan (plano)
Who is the best player you were playing against?
Caron Butler (4:07 PM)
Michael Jordan. Tough guys today are obviously Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, LeBron, Carmelo is always a tough matchup as well.
Rustin (Arlington, TX)
Lets not ignore the elephant in the room. If Cuban finds another superstar to match up with Dirk, you will probably get traded. What is your argument that you are that other superstar the Mavs desperately need this season?
Caron Butler (4:09 PM)
Just got to go out there and continue to perform at a high level. That's it. you never have control over the buiness of basketball, anything can happen so you just have to continue to prove your value. I like to just play and let them figure it out.
johnathon (dallas, tx)
Caron, i believe dallas is one of the deepest teams in the league and very talented in the starting 5. I believe they could beat an aging lakers team but how do we match up defnesively against the miami trio?
Caron Butler (4:10 PM)
Think we match up pretty well because we are so deep. you can continue to throw so many different looks at their scorers and trying to tire down and wear down a guy like LeBron james or Dwyane Wade, you can throw size or quickness at those guys.
You had a high assist average while at DC, particularly when Arenas was out. Do you think your role on this team should be more as a scorer with the ball or without?
Caron Butler (4:12 PM)
that's somtething I have to see going into training camp, approach practices and get a feel for what the team needs this season. roles tend to vary. This season going in I plan to be very aggressive on both ends of the floor. I plan to put myself into situations to help make other guys better.
How many 3 pointers do you think you should be taking a game? What % do you think you should be realistically shooting them at?
Caron Butler (4:13 PM)
That's one of the things I really worked on. Anything 36 percent and above would be a great improvement. Shooting anywhere from three to four a game. I'm more of a mid-range shooter and slasher, but 3-point shot is going to be available a lot. The offense that we run, the corner 3 and spot-up 3 are going to be available a lot.
Stephen Ayler (the Colony, Tx)
Caron I enjoyed seeing you playing with the Mavs and I also love seeing you on the commercial of Old Spice. the question for you is...how do you feel about Tyson Chandler coming to Dallas??
Caron Butler (4:14 PM)
thought that was a great addition, briging a guy like Tyson on, someone that can be a mobile big man, beat a lot of big men up the court, great defensively, high energy guy and obviously another huge offseason move was bringing Brendan Haywood back. He's played exceptionally well the last two years and I think he's going to have a major impact this year.
brennan fortes (Racine,Wisconsin)
do you think your going to have a breakout season, because reports say your in top notch shape.
Caron Butler (4:15 PM)
I'm looking forward to having a big year. Just because of expectations on this team, coming in last year and finishing second behind the Lakers just a few games was big. Whatever you do here is going to be magnified extra so it is a great opportunity.
Hey Caron, what is your favorite arena to play in and is it because of the history, fans, or something else?
Caron Butler (4:16 PM)
I would have to say Milwaukee, just going home, that's home for me. Getting the opportunity to play in front of your loved ones is always special. You get 200-plus at the game and it's always fun to play in front of everyone that you grew up with.
Hey Caron, love your game. Did you get slimmer to play a little 2 guard or just to be a quicker 3? Has the staff asked you to be ready to play the 2 if needed?
Caron Butler (4:17 PM)
Combination of both. I got slimmer because I knew it would be better for longeviity for my career. I can move better with less weight on me and in order to be out there on the floor you've got to be versatile. You've got to be ready to play the 2 and 3 and I even read somewhere that coach wants me to play some at the 4, so I'm just looking forward to being out there.
Marcus (Irving, Texas)
How much better will your offensive game be this season now with a full training camp with the Mavs?
Caron Butler (4:19 PM)
I hope it will be a lot better. I don't think it was that bad last season with the transition. I hope it will be more efficient, because that's something I'm known for, being efficient with what I'm doing out here. It was a transition coming after the trade, but at the same time you had a locker room with seasoned vets and an organization with open arms that made it easier.
MFFL in Ohio (Cincinnati, OH)
Do you expect Rodrigue Beaubois to get more minutes this season?
Caron Butler (4:20 PM)
Yeah, definitely expect him to be out there. He's a very electrifying explosive guard. He can play the 1 or the 2. If healthy and if earned, he defintely deserves to be out there at some point.
Hey Caron first of want to say congrats on your newborn...so are we gonna see more of those explosive moves to the basket this year?
Caron Butler (4:21 PM)
I look forward to it. I look forward to attacking the basket, taking what the defense gives me and sometimes forcing. I want to be aggressive and help my teammates. A lot of other things happen when you attack the basket. you create for yourself or others, and worse case scenario, the majority of the time you go to the free throw line.
Nikola Zuber (Washington DC)
hey CaronWhat are you shooting for this year as far as your points per game? And who would you say is your best friend on the Mavericks so far? Thanks Big fan
Caron Butler (4:23 PM)
Obviously the guys I came over from Washington with, I've always been cool with them. I'm friendly with all the guys. We communicated through text a lot this summer. As far as points per game, I just want to be effective and efficient out there. Points as far a number doesn't matter, but better than last year would be good.
Mark (Irving, TX)
Do you think your performance will improve if you get moved back to the small forward position this season?
Caron Butler (4:24 PM)
I mean whatever position I'm at I think i'm going to be a lot better because of training camp and being adjusted to the guys and play calling and everything. the biggest difference between the 2 and 3 in this offense is the 2 has the ball a lot more and 3 is on the weak-side more. At the 2, and really the 1 and 2 play more two-man basketball with Dirk.
Mark (Irving, TX)
What do you think needs to happen for the Mavs to have a better finish than they did last season (particularly in the playoffs)?
Caron Butler (4:25 PM)
Just continue to develop great team continuity throughout the season, starting in training camp. We want to really focus on defense. The scoring will come because we have a great offense and people that create. I think everything else will fall into place.
jason (new london tx)
how long do you think it will take the team to gel
Caron Butler (4:27 PM)
It better happen within the next three weeks. The coaches usually mix the lineups a lot in the preseason, but i think we need to get that repetition in during the preseason and during the practices. I think the practices are very important, just so everyone is clicking on the same page. You saw what happened with my Cowboys. It took them until week three.
SUPAKOOLGREGS (BadNews Va.)
How much of an impact do you see DOJO and Roddy B having this season? How much impact will The Jet and TuffJuice have?
Caron Butler (4:29 PM)
I see Dominique having great impact. Definitley he's a young guy that is physically ready to play. He'll have to mature rather quickly on a team like this. He'll have time and moments to really showcase his ability. It's really a luxury to play on a team like this to play with so many guys that can teach him things on and off the court. i really am excited to see him have a big impact iwth this team.
Alan Curran (Winnipeg, Canada)
Hey Caron! Hope you had a great summer! I heard you did tons of work this offseason, care to give a fellow baller any tips you picked up??? P.S I'm on a horse.
Caron Butler (4:30 PM)
honestly, with all the explosive workouts I've been doing in Chicago with Grover, I think the key thing is maintenace. sometimes you get away from using certain muscles and they shut down on you. Just focusing on your core, getting it fired back up is key. Definitely concentrate on your key. I'm on a horse (laughing)....Old Spice...
Caron Butler (4:31 PM)
Thanks everyone for your questions. I'm looking forward to a great season and seeing everyone at the American Airlines Center. Thanks for your support!
