Chuck Cooperstein (12:02 PM)
Greetings from chilly San Antonio! About as chilly as the Mavs record these days. Hopefuly better times are ahead. And soon. Let's go
Is this disasterous stretch partly RC's fault?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:02 PM)
I don't think other top tier teams (Bos, SA, LA, MIA, Orl) would be in this bad of shape if they lost their best player? Is Dirk the only superstar that keeps his team in contention without a #2 and will this league ever give him respect (winning the chmp aside).
Chuck Cooperstein (12:05 PM)
Well, Orlando WAS in pretty bad shape (Lost eight of nine) ant one point, and they had everyone on deck (Before they made their trade). As for the Mavs, they did have their #2. And he also got hurt. So now you're down to 3 and lower. Few, if any, survive that. And as for Dirk and respect. Unfortunately people don't want to look at the whole body of work. They look back to when you failed. Not too many have forgiven the Mavs or Dirk for what happened in 06 in the Finals and 07 vs Golden State. Wrong, but that's how it is
Chuck Cooperstein (12:07 PM)
Haven't heard anything. Mavs brass doesn't operate the way the Nuggets and Nets do. They like being on the down low when talks are happening.
Is Monte Ellis untouchable because hes worth pursuing. Do you think Chandler, Butler, and Beaubois, could pry him away. I know Chandler is doing good but Haywood could do the same and avg. more blocks. What are other primary targets that are possibilities.
so what are the mavs looking to make a move live jackson from the bobcats or is it true that they are waiting to see what happens with devin harris
Chuck Cooperstein (12:10 PM)
For some reason, I can't post the questions, so I'll have to do it this way. Eli, The mavs are playing it close to the vest. I think they want to see what happens when Dirk comes back (Hopefully tomorrow night) and then see how all the pieces fit together before they decide exactly what they need to do. I think they need Jackson more than Devin Harris, but I can see the argument for Harris. But apparently, as marc Stein has reported, if the Blazers thrwo Batum into a deal, that game will then be over
Chuck, how did Sasha Pavlovic look out there in person last night? Do you think he will stay past his 10 day contract?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:13 PM)
John asked about Sasha Pavlovic. Didn't do badly. He's trying to muddle his way through. Made only 1-3 FG. Did have two blocks including a nice recovery when he was beaten and then blocked from behind. They're going to give him the full run before they decide if they have to go deeper (And make a trade)
Billy OKC [via mobile]
With everyone demanding big trades why don't the mavs look at smaller deals, like corey brewer? He can play 2 or 3 and is a great defender or maybe check on ak47 a lot more money but seems to fit
Chuck Cooperstein (12:15 PM)
Billy asks, With everyone demanding big trades, why don't the Mavs look at something smaller like Corey Brewer? Well, Brewer can definitely guard, but after a decent year shooting it last year has reverted to his old ways. His defense is fine, but he still has to be able to do something offensively. As a Gator, I love him. As a Maverick, I don't
Perfect scenario...trade exception, 2nd round pick for Caron Landry to backup the 3/4 and reduce minutes for Marion/Dirk. Butler, 1st round pick, Jones, and Mahimi for Stephen Jackson to get the scorer/defender we need. Butler is then bought out of his contract w/ Charlotte and returns to Dallas so we can offer him beyond the midlevel exception next year. What do you think? Plausible? On the Mavs radar?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:17 PM)
JB-- You can't trade Butler and then bring him back without him losing his Larry Bird rights. Which he is NOT about to do
Never thought I would say this, but looks like Mavs are pretty stocked at center. Is Haywood a luxury ? Would you be on board with including him in a trade ?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:18 PM)
Cliff thinks the mavs are Stocked at center. I would tend to think, not. Right now they have a legit starting center in Chandler, and three guys who can occasionally do something. Again, Haywood went into the doghouse last night when Mahinmi came in for him at the start of the 4th quarter.
Eric (Aliso Viejo)
Chuck, do you think Tony Romo is over rated as a QB?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:20 PM)
Eric brings levity to all this by asking is Tony Romo is overrated. Far be it from me to not give an opinion on the Cowboys QB like everyone else in town. I think he's really good, and with improved offensive line play, and a running game that can make a 3rd and 1 on occasion will be just fine for the Cowboys next year
Who do YOU think we can get to help this team. If this 2-6 run as shown anything, it is that Dirk is important, but I don't think he is enough to fill both his shoes and Butlers...
Chuck Cooperstein (12:22 PM)
Ryan asks if Dirk is enough to fill both his and Butler's shoes? And the answer is probably not, and that's why they need to look at Jackson and see if he can be pried out of Charlotte. Which, BTW, is going to get harder to do if the Bobcats keep playing better. Right now they're a playoff team in the EAst, and Michael Jordan may not be so willing to part with Sjax if he can get some playoff dates out of him
Chuck Cooperstein (12:24 PM)
Several have asked about Monta Ellis. No doubt the Warriors want to move him (And that contract). Would you rather have him or Roddy? I think they're very similar players when it's all said and done. Of course Roddy needs to get back, and that still appears to be at least a few weeks away. He's younger and cheaper
We can see the questions being posted Coop.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:25 PM)
Thanks for letting me know you can see the questions. Very disconcerting to me that I can't
Are we not scared that Chandler will pull a Lebron and not sign with us after this year. Why not get some value out of him.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:27 PM)
Because this tream still thinks it can win, and until it thinks otherwise, it's not trading the best center it has ever had. Plus, as we have seen, bad contracts can be moved, and it's easier to do it in the off season. That's when they'll make a play with Haywood's deal. They're going to want to keep Chandler at all costs. Because he makes Dirk happy. And they don't want Dirk unhappy
Chuck Cooperstein (12:28 PM)
I did see what Ellis has done. I also know what roddy has done is a short time. I don't know what he's going to be like going forward, but I have an idea. And again, don't forget the finances. I know mark Cuban and donnie aren't
What would you think about trading for a guy like Grant Hill. He's a little older, but those years of injury time off have preserved his legs. He does a lot of things well and he goes to the hole. He's the kind of guy that would make everyone around him better.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:29 PM)
I think Hill would be nice alongside Marion. And he has played well this season. But I just don't see what the Mavs have to offer that entices the Suns, and makes sense for the Mavs too
Like I was saying last week Chuck, because of the injuries the mav won't be able to compete this year.Sure they'll get to the playoff, but they won't be able to advance to the finals.Oh well next year.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:30 PM)
They might not have been able to get to the Finals this year with the team they had. They certainly had a great chance to do that. And of course you're talking about the NBA Finals. I'm talking about the Western conference Finals. It's a bear out here
What happened to Derek Harper ? Why is he not doing the studio analysis work ? I thought he was really good.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:31 PM)
I always enjoy visiting with Derek Harper about the Mavs. Not sure what happened. maybe it has something to do with the fact that Channel 21 isn't doing as many games this season. I also know he has a son in college and wants to spend time watching him play, and maybe the mavs would have taken too much time away from doing that
Chuck Cooperstein (12:33 PM)
Appreciate you listening in E. Washington. It's not time to panic until they start playing like this when Dirk is playing. Until then, you just have to ride it out. You have to believe that given their recent history, they're probably going to do something, I just don't know how blockbuster it is. 2008 and 2010 were pretty dramatic don't you think?
Christopher (Irving )
Dirk took pay cut to help the Finances, and I think he would rather have Ellis then chandler when we already have Haywood. Ellis has special moves to get the rim and a pure jumper.
Chuck Cooperstein (12:35 PM)
You win with size in this league. And defense. And rebounding. Chandler gives you all three. Again, look at the teams that are competing for it all. All but Miami have legitimate rim defenders. Sorry, far more valuable than trading for an expensive piece that you might already have in your own collection
It seems to me that this is too much of a "stretch" team, with or without Dirk, the Mavericks always have these great defensive and offensive stretches but lack consistency for the whole game such as the championship teams like SA or BOS. Why is that and can this be corrected before the playoffs?
Chuck Cooperstein (12:38 PM)
Everyone has stretches where they play poorly. It's the nature of the NBA game. Not sure how it is that you correct that or minimize that other than maximizing every possession that you have. The last two games have seen not just turnovers, but the points created from them just beat them. Last night Indiana had 14 points off 12 TO's. mavs had 1 point off of 8. That was your final margin in the game 102-89
What's the latest news on Roddy Beaubois' injury
Chuck Cooperstein (12:39 PM)
He's still a few weeks out. He's doing straight ahead running, and doing lots of shooting. The shot looks a pure as ever. Can't wait to see him get back
Chuck Cooperstein (12:40 PM)
On that note we'll shut it down for today. Thanks for the questions. We'll do it again next week.
