Bryan Broaddus (12:00 PM)
Thanks for showing up this morning guys...ready to get started.
Any news one Austin? Did he truly pull/tear his hammy, or was it just a "tweek" and he'll go next week like he usually does?
Bryan Broaddus (12:01 PM)
Todd Archer and the guys from ESPN Dallas.com reported that Miles will be OUT until at least after the BYE. Talked with some folks this morning that said the same thing.
Bryan, this is more like it!!! Even with cracked ribs romo showed what it takes to be a leader. Will he be ready monday?
Bryan Broaddus (12:02 PM)
How much Romo practices this week, we will see but he said that he would be ready Monday for the Redskins. Modern medicine should help him play if needed.
Jason Garrett should be getting slammed for that ridiculous 3rd and 2 call where he ran the ball with Austin. Not only did that play have no chance, it got Austin hurt! Seriously what was he thinking and why isnt the media all over him for that!!!
Bryan Broaddus (12:05 PM)
If you listen to our radio station in Dallas 103.3 FM ESPN, we are all over Garrett for the call. When I saw the first time he tried to run the play he called time out. I thought he might have scored if they did call the time out. Play was blocked well the first time. Going to look at it again after this chat.
Rod Blagojevich (Chicago)
Give it to me straight, Broaddus: Miles Austin is out until ____
Bryan Broaddus (12:05 PM)
After the BYE.
Do you see the Cowboys signing a WR?? Who out there could spark their interest??
Bryan Broaddus (12:07 PM)
Pro department has lists they are working off of. Might try and go back to the guys they had here in the pre season. You need players that have a little understanding of what you are trying to do on offense. Tuesday is a big day in the NFL to work guys out...we will see then.
Hello Bryan Do you think Holley will get more snaps even if all of the receivers are healthy?
Bryan Broaddus (12:08 PM)
Holley played well in the pre season, much better than I thought he would. He deserves an opportunity if needed to get more snaps. 49ers secondary was poor yesterday.
Will Terrence Newman be back this week against the Redskins?
Bryan Broaddus (12:09 PM)
Just watching Newman work last couple of weeks he has been running well but its not at game speed. Trainers have been real cautious about this injury and the time table. We will know Wednesday.
Brent Thompson (Charleston, SC)
The media is making Romo look like a tough guy hero after yesterdays game. With all of the mistakes he has made in the past are you buying into the hype that this will change his legacy and he will now be a mentally and physically tough quarterback?
Bryan Broaddus (12:11 PM)
I have always liked Tony because I was on the staff that brought him here. I have never questioned his toughness or leadership. To be honest, he only cares what his teammates thinks about him and not you and I.
Love you guys on the radio. Is Dez always going to be injury prone because of the way he plays? If he could stay healthy I see true potential as the best wideout in the league.
Bryan Broaddus (12:14 PM)
There is no doubt of the talent of Dez but it takes so much more to play receiver in this league. If you dont know what you are doing it makes it even more difficult. He needs to learn his assignments and how to run routes. If he does that, then we can maybe one day talk about that best wideout in the league.
Shane Kiihnl (Shreveport, LA)
After two weeks it is obvious Lee is the best ILB on the team. When do you think they will limit his plays on special teams so they can keep him on the field longer for defensive snaps?
Bryan Broaddus (12:16 PM)
We had this same talk about Dez returning kicks. Joe DeCamillis is just trying to get his best players on the field. Its a tough call to make but he does an outstanding job in that area.
josh (New Orleans)
With all of the scrutiny about the rushing defense and the secondary in the offseason and preseason, is it surprising that the defense as a whole is playing so well in this new scheme and when healthy do you think he could be much better?
Bryan Broaddus (12:17 PM)
The front seven has been outstanding for this team. I had that has one of the best question marks going into the season. A healthy secondary would help as well, you are right.
Mark O. (Windsor, ON.)
Hello Bryan - Love your insight regarding the Boys. How has J. Ratliff looked under the new scheme and how long is Felix on the shelf for? Thanks!
Bryan Broaddus (12:20 PM)
Thanks for the words...I thought that Ratliff was outstanding yesterday with his ability to fight the double team blocks and get pressure inside on Smith to make his move off the spot. Still waiting word on Jones but RB is a deep position for this team.
With the Austin injury, I think Jerry has to sign a WR. He has a history with both, but there's no chance that he goes with one of the 2 biggest names out there - Moss or TO is there?
Bryan Broaddus (12:21 PM)
I do not see Garrett allowing Jones to bring in TO or Moss...he is trying to change that culture of the locker room...
Shane Kiihnl (Shreveport, LA)
How much of our running problems is good defense and how much is bad line play/rb play?
Bryan Broaddus (12:23 PM)
I knew going in that it would be a struggle for the Cowboys to run the ball against the Jets and 49ers...its been tough to secure the down linemen and get guys up on LBers. Not alot of room with those two teams.
Gary (Houston, TX)
BB, what is your opinion on Mike Jenkins' play this year? Is he back at his 2009 form (or close to it) or has he not been picked on because Ball and McCann have been out there so much?
Bryan Broaddus (12:24 PM)
Jenkins playing with better confidence but he is really banged up. The receivers that the Cowboys have played so far are not the best but still Jenkins doing what he has to do.
Ike (Dallas, TX)
What has been the difference between 2010 Hatcher and 2011 Hatcher? He seems like a completely different player now.
Bryan Broaddus (12:26 PM)
Thats a great question about Hatcher. He is a different player and if he played like this last season he would have got paid like Bowen. Have seen the talent before but then faded badly. Playing like he is trying to get paid.
TJ Houshmanzadah thoughts Bryan???
Bryan Broaddus (12:27 PM)
I player that might make some sense. Has the size and can be productive. Like him better as an option over the others. Still can be a productive player.
Ryan (Wichita Falls)
How did the O-Line grade as a unit yesterday? They seemed solid but not spectacular. Its refreshing to have seen only 1 holding call in 2 weeks.
Bryan Broaddus (12:28 PM)
I will go into the lab after this chat and find out how the offensive line played. 4th quarter they were outstanding protection wise.
Mel (Lakeland, Florida)
With the injuries now, it seems like a WR will be signed. Does this mean the end of Buehler? Seems like that could be the only position that can afford to be cut.
Bryan Broaddus (12:31 PM)
Any positions they bring in will cost someone a roster spot. Carrying an extra DL and kicker but Jerry seems committed to making this Buehler situation work. The FB is another position they might make a move at.
"I do not see Garrett allowing Jones to bring in TO or Moss...he is trying to change that culture of the locker room..." Really? When has anyone other than double-J had a choice in the matter?
Bryan Broaddus (12:32 PM)
When I worked for the Cowboys, Dave Campo had just as much say in the personnel as did Bill Parcells. Cowboys Head Coaches have a real voice in what goes on here. Chan Gailey was the reason that Jerry didnt draft Moss...
Kevin (at the office)
How would you rate Tyron Smith's play so far? Will he eventually be the Cowboys' LT?
Bryan Broaddus (12:33 PM)
Thanks to Kosier, Smith has been outstanding. He was battling a difficult guy in Ray McDonald yesterday. Feet are outstanding but needs to get stronger and learn how to play against power, he will.
Did Doug Free have a bad game? He looked like he got beat a few times.
Bryan Broaddus (12:36 PM)
Have not gone into the lab yet but the eye ball test would tell you that Free was not as good as he needed to be. Justin Smith is a high motor player gave him plenty of problems. Needed to match him and it was a struggle.
Paula (Austin, TX)
Byran, Love your work. I thought Bailey showed a lot of mental toughness getting over the first miss and making the two big kicks. Thoughts on the kicker going forward?
Bryan Broaddus (12:39 PM)
Mental toughness yes, but still his job to get a 21 yard field goal home. Its tough when a kicker doesnt have the confidence of his teammates and coaches. Bailey took a big step in gaining that confidence after that miss.
I heard that Miles got hurt, is this true and will he be out, if so how long?
Bryan Broaddus (12:40 PM)
Austin hurt his hamstring and he will be out from what we have learned until after the BYE.
my birthday today and yet i received my gift early in the form of dallas' comeback. no question to submit...just wanted to say thanks to 'boys for not ruining my day.
Bryan Broaddus (12:41 PM)
Happy Birthday...hope you have a great day...thanks for checking in.
Bryan, I know you will be watching the tape shortly... Could you please provide some insight on the play of Alan Ball and Frank Walker afterwards... Many thanks
Bryan Broaddus (12:42 PM)
I do a Scout's Eye for ESPN Dallas every Tuesday morning after the game. I try and break down the good and bad from each game. Check it out if you like.
What did you think of Harbaughs choice to keep the points on the board?
Bryan Broaddus (12:43 PM)
I had no problem with him keeping the points. His QB was awful the 2nd half and the Cowboys defense was playing better. He was just trying to protect Smith. I understand that.
John (New Jersey)
Brian - enjoy your work. With the speed @ RB I still don't see enough sweeps and traps. Is this a function of O line, play calling or my inability to see correctly?
Bryan Broaddus (12:45 PM)
Garrett wants to get the ball on the edge. He used his trap game last week aganst the Jets but Nagy got stuffed two times. This OL can get the ball on the edge but when you have active LBers like the Jets and 49ers, it can be tough.
Greg (Pflugerville, TX)
Hi Bryan, Austin, Bryant, Newman - injury prone players, a result of the offseason labor issues, or is there something the team isn't doing?
Bryan Broaddus (12:47 PM)
Newman has the worse history of injuries but Bryant in his young career has had his share too. I think with Austin its just bad luck. I will say this about Dez, he plays the game full tilt, he is going to take some shots.
Peter (Round Rock, TX)
What are the Cowboys doing on kickoffs? Are they telling Buehler not to kick it through the endzone or is he shanking his kicks?
Bryan Broaddus (12:49 PM)
I have no idea what they are telling Buehler but I will ask, his job is to drill them through the end zone, if he cant do that then they need to move on. I have seen him try to hit the ball so hard that he shanks the kick.
Where has Martellus Bennette been?
Bryan Broaddus (12:51 PM)
I really thought that Bennett would be a factor yesterday and that is the stupid scout in me. I really have no great answer for the way he plays. There are times at the point of attack with his size he should be hammering folks but he doesnt do it. Its a shame.
Will Choice or Murray get the bulk of the work until Felix gets back?
Bryan Broaddus (12:53 PM)
Choice, Murray and Tanner will all see work this week. This is a deep position for the club like TE.
Gilbert (Dallas, TX)
Do you see Jerry Jones contacting Moss' agent?
Bryan Broaddus (12:53 PM)
I do not see Jones contacting Moss' agent at all.
Pete (Montville, NJ)
Bryan- as usual great analysis on your scout breakdowns. I think Jason Garrett should use as much as the roster as possible regardless of injury. This would keep true to his "create competition" theme and keep the defenses honest. Your thoughts.
Bryan Broaddus (12:55 PM)
You built this team with the big picture in mind. There were two moves that I didnt like with Thomas and Young but I need to move on. I can see them added maybe a player or two off a practice squad from another team, much like they did with Parnell.
Brent (El Paso)
Anthony Spencer got burned on the TD, was that just a good play call against the defense? What do you think of Spencer's play through two games?
Bryan Broaddus (12:56 PM)
Great design by Harbaugh. Spencer in space is good but Spencer carrying a receiver up the field is a bad thing.
Thomas (Fort Myers, FL)
Martellus Bennett made a great play on the tipped interception. He showed good hustle, because he got knocked down 2 times lost his helmet and still pushed the guy out of bounds to save a pick 6. No question just felt like giving some props.
Bryan Broaddus (12:57 PM)
Thanks for pointing that out...you hit the nail on the head.
Can you explain how you watch the game as a scout?
Bryan Broaddus (12:59 PM)
To do that my friend might bore you to death...thanks for everyone's time...off to the lab...make sure you are checking out all our guys work on ESPN Dallas.com. Have a great day.
