Chat with Matt Kenseth

Kenseth owns 21 career wins.
Welcome to SportsNation! On Tuesday, we'll be chatting with driver of NASCAR's No. 17 Ford Matt Kenseth, as he prepares for the Chase's eighth race this weekend (Sunday, 3 p.m. ET, ESPN).
Entering Sunday's race at Texas Motor Speedway, Kenseth and his Roush Fenway Racing team sits in fifth place in the points standings, 36 behind leader Carl Edwards. His three wins this season is tied for third on the year, as are his 18 top-10 finishes.
After winning the 2000 NASCAR Rookie of the Year, Kenseth went on to win the 2003 championship, the last driver to win the points title prior to the beginning of the Chase for the Cup. He's finished in the top 10 in the points standings seven times in his career.
Send your questions now and join Kenseth Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. ET!

Hellooooooo! Matt Kenseth should be joining us shortly! Keep your questions coming!
Matt Kenseth (10:33 AM)
Hello everyone!
Greg (North Carolina)
Do you still feel as if you have a legitimate shot at winning the Sprint Cup?
Matt Kenseth (10:34 AM)
I was more confident two and a half weeks ago. We're far down but not out. We would have to have a spectacular few weeks and have the top guys have a down few weeks to get back in it.
Marc Howard (Knoxville, TN)
Is Texas Motor Speedway a good track for you? How confident are you heading into this weekend?
Matt Kenseth (10:35 AM)
It's been a good track for us, maybe the best statisically speaking. I love going there but past success doesn't mean much for future success. But I like going there.
Melissa (Holly Springs, GA)
I'm a huge fan and can't wait to see you win your 2nd Championship, hope it is this year! My question is do you and Edwards talk about the chase and the races together or do you keep your race plans to yourselves?
Matt Kenseth (10:36 AM)
We don't talk! Just kidding. We don't talk about it much actually. At the track sometimes we'll talk about how our cars are driving but that's about it.
Hanson (DC)
What's better a Martinville hotdog or a brat at a Packers game?
Matt Kenseth (10:36 AM)
I've never had a hot dot at Martinsville but anything at a Packers game has to be better.
Greg (North Carolina)
Even though Martinsville didn't work out terribly well for you, would you like to see more short tracks during the Chase? As a fan, I loved the competitiveness after the boring run at Talladega.
Matt Kenseth (10:37 AM)
Only if we can replace Talladega with one! I enjoy the short tracks. I really enjoy most all of the tracks on the circuit so I like the variety. It's a good mixture as it is.
Jeff (Dallas)
Do you feel like this year's Chase was more open than in past years?
Matt Kenseth (10:38 AM)
It has felt like that. There have been many different guys in contention and just like you say, much more wide open. Not sure if it is the point system or Jimmie not being as dominant or what. I'm not really sure.
John C. (Charlotte)
Somebody needs to win besides Jimmie, right? I mean, he's a nice guy and all, but it's getting kind of boring.
Matt Kenseth (10:38 AM)
Only if it's me!
Hugh Gottit (Lake Norman, NC)
When you go to Martinsville, do you think of past incidents with drivers such as Jeff Grodan?
Matt Kenseth (10:39 AM)
I try not to remember it. You want to start with a clean slate and an open mind and work as hard as you can to get a good finish.
Scott Stall (West Virginia)
How disappointing is it when you don't win a race? Can you really take much enjoyment in just being Top 10?
Matt Kenseth (10:40 AM)
It depends on the week. With 43 cars out there and good tracks and bad tracks for your car, the better you do the better you feel. If you have a good day at a bad track and get a top 5 finish, that can feel great. But nothing feels like winning.
Anthony Kimball ('Bama)
What would you be doing if you weren't racing cars?
Matt Kenseth (10:41 AM)
I don't want to even think about that. Probably working on cars.
Sharon (Illinois)
Have you tested at Phoenix? If so, do you think it will be more of a wild card in the Chase this year?
Matt Kenseth (10:42 AM)
Every team tested there about a month and a half ago. I don't know that it will be more of a wild card than Talladega or even Martinsville. But yeah, it's a new and very unique track for us.
Hanson (DC)
Do you have to change your pre race for a night race?
Matt Kenseth (10:42 AM)
Not really. If anything I try to stay up later the few nights before but other than that, no.
Zach Hayes (Olathe, KS)
What do you say to people to think NASCAR drivers aren't athletes?
Matt Kenseth (10:43 AM)
I don't know.. it all depends how you define it. I certainly couldn't play pro baseball or football but those guys couldn't drive my car either. I probably could keep up with a golfer.
Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)
Better Packer QB, Rodgers or Favre?
Matt Kenseth (10:44 AM)
I think they are both great. Favre probably one of the best football players of all time considering how much he won and how much fun he was to watch. And Rodgers is the best QB in the game currently.
Boss Hogg (Hazzard County)
Would you like to see the Packers play one game a year at Miller Park?
Matt Kenseth (10:45 AM)
They are a football team! I don't know my history well enough but I think they played some at County Stadium.
Alan Bonneau (Gardner, MA)
What is like with the new chase format? Better or worse for current drivers?
Matt Kenseth (10:46 AM)
It depends, the guy on top will love it and the ones on the bottom won't. But there are rewards for running well and punishments for not being consistent and I'm OK with that.
Stern Keith (Floyd, VA)
Have you talked to Brian Vickers since the accident (s) with him? If so, what was said?
Matt Kenseth (10:46 AM)
No.
Lisa (NC)
Did you dress up for Halloween?
Matt Kenseth (10:47 AM)
No. I just had the kids dress up.
Matt Kenseth (10:47 AM)
As bad as I was Sunday I probably should have dressed up as a race car driver.
dz (nowhere, nm)
hi matt. how much does a driver work with sponsorship negotiations? anyword on fulltime sponsorship for next season? eventhough i'm a jj fan i wish you the best!
Matt Kenseth (10:48 AM)
I don't think you really work at all with the negotiations. You do things for them here and there but that's about it. At this point I'm not sure what we have going on.
Hanson (DC)
Do you have a mini van for the family and if so have you "modified it" just a bit?
Matt Kenseth (10:48 AM)
I've never had a mini-van.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What is the Hardest Speedway that you have raced at?
Matt Kenseth (10:50 AM)
It appears to be Martinsville. Thanks for the questions! I appreciate you guys taking the time to send questions. Hope we can do this again soon.
