Bryan Broaddus (12:00 PM)
Good morning or Afternoon if that is the case..have started on the defensive side of the ball and took a break with 6:26 left in the 2nd quarter...so lets get started here.
Brian (Appleton, Wi)
Any of your scout friends tell you about any availalbe backs the Cowboys could sign? Thanks.
Bryan Broaddus (12:01 PM)
With the short week, I have a feeling that they will probably try and sign a back that was on the team this past summer, Miller comes to mind.
Why was Rob Ryan blitzing late in the 4th quarter when it was obvious the Cowboys couldn't cover the Giants receivers?
Bryan Broaddus (12:03 PM)
Ryan is not going to stop what he does, in games I had studied as well, the more you pressured Manning the more likely he was going to make a mistake. From what I have seen so far in this game, dropping eight is no answer either.
John (New Jersey)
Bryan - when Brooking is in your goal to go package (and got blown up btw), doesn't it send a clear signal to GM that MAYBE we need to address this area? Was there an injury or is Brooking included in that package?
Bryan Broaddus (12:05 PM)
Brooking was blocked there was no doubt about that, the reason he is on the field that there will be times where he does show a nose for the ball like Lee and will read the scheme right and make a play.
Mike (Saratoga NY)
To me, the failure of this defense over the last several years is due to a lack of a someone other than Ware stepping up in critical moments to pressure the QB. The Giants and Eagles, even with all of their failures defensively, at least have multiple athletes that can put their hand in the dirt and rush the passer. The Cowboys have one reliable pass rusher in Ware, and the rest (Hatcher, Ratliff, Spencer) are just unreliable. My question is, if you had final say on personnel for the Cowboys and if you have to choose between a pass rusher (5 technique DE or even a 3-4 OLB) and a corner who are rated equally, which one would you take in the first round?I don?t think that any corner can hold up when the pass rush is this poor, especially in the 4th quarter.
Bryan Broaddus (12:09 PM)
I think you bring up an interesting point. I am from the school of QB first, player that gets QB on the ground, player that blocks player from getting QB on ground. There is no doubt that this team needs a cornerback that can cover. Scandrick is a nice nickel player but they need someone opposite Jenkins. I do feel like they did the right thing drafting Smith over any corner in the draft last year.
What in the world has happened to Terrence Newman? It looks like his play has gone off a cliff and he's been completely unable to cover anyone for about a month now.
Bryan Broaddus (12:12 PM)
In the last six weeks, Newman had gone from playing two of his best games of his career to really playing poorly the last four. Just studying his game now, in off coverage, he is no where as good technique wise as he needs to be with his balance or footwork. He his best play in the last four weeks, he read the route the right way, drove on the ball but dropped it. He hasnt been making any plays like that in off coverage.
Why not let the Giants score with 1 min left and keep 1 or 2 timeouts in the bag? What are the odds of stopping them on 4 straight tries from the 1?
Bryan Broaddus (12:14 PM)
Garrett in the press conference told us that the coaches did talk about letting them score. Still with all of that, they had a chance to tie that game and send it into overtime.
Joe (Fresno, CA)
Hello Mr. Broaddus. I have to totally agree with you that it is not RR's fault for the defenses lack in production. I just don't think we have the talent at corner to play man. Outside of Jenkins I think the rest are inconsistent. I'd say the draft has plenty of talent at corner, I would draft J.Jenkins 1st and Dontari Poe 2nd then another corner in the 3rd tell T.New to take less money or be gone.
Bryan Broaddus (12:17 PM)
It sounds like that you are well ahead of me on this draft stuff. I am looking forward to sitting down when this season is over and breaking down these college players. Maybe there is another Lee or Murray out there for this team to add.
Bryan, where was the breakdown on the field goal block? It seemed Bailey got the ball high enough but JPP got great penetration.
Bryan Broaddus (12:18 PM)
Will study in the Lab this morning but the eye ball test told me that Holland let Pierre-Paul inside. Will have it in my Tuesday breakdown on ESPN Dallas.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will make the playoffs since they are now tied with the Giants?
Bryan Broaddus (12:21 PM)
Going into this game with the Giants I really believed that if they lost this game, they would not make the playoffs. Before the season I had them at 9-7 with no playoffs. For the Cowboys fans, I hope I am wrong but its not looking good. You should worry about the Eagles coming in here and killing any chance you have left.
Why do the Cowboys keep finding these inexplicable ways to lose games!! I can't believe how many dumb penalties on defense gave the Giants extra life. I thought that stuff was done with Wade! What can be done to instill mental toughness in this team!!! And worse, yet some irrational fans still blame Romo for this loss, instead of noticing that this defense has some real issues!!!
Bryan Broaddus (12:22 PM)
I feel like that you have a real understanding of this team. I could have typed it better.
Bryan, everyone is leaping off the Rob Ryan bandwagon after the last month but in all fairness, what can he do with such horrific play from Newman, Ball and Walker, mediocre play from Scandrick and Jenkins constantly injured?
Bryan Broaddus (12:25 PM)
Great point about the secondary, Ryan has had his moments where he has put these players in positions to make plays. The one guy that has been the most consistent all season and has no reason to hang his head is Sean Lee. For what he has done with one hand is amazing. Maybe the bottom line is this defense is just not good enough.
Whats up Bryan, love your work. What a mess last night eh? What position do you think Dallas should take with their first round pick? And do you see any offseason upgrades on the d-line, maybe a big NT finally to take pressure of Rat? Also, why doesn't Clifton Geathers play at all? Is he in this teams plans?
Bryan Broaddus (12:27 PM)
Thanks for the words, The biggest questions in my book for the draft will all be on the defensive side of the ball but I will say that you will need to look strong at inside help on OL. Scouts have told me that they have already started that as well. CB, DE, ILB, S would be my wish list.
What was the atmosphere like in the Cowboys' locker room after the game? Do they seem mentally down after two tough losses?
Bryan Broaddus (12:27 PM)
I don't even want to be there...
John (New Jersey)
Bryan - I disagree that DWare has been a consistent pass rusher this year. It seems most of his sacks come in the first half, but when the D NEEDS to make a play in 4th quarter, DWare disappears.
Bryan Broaddus (12:29 PM)
I have said this for four weeks now. Welcome to my world, but get ready for everyone to take a shot at you but I will still keep the title of "Failed Scout"...
Seems like a complete overhaul of the secondary is required. I know Manning didn't hit the turf a lot, but we got a lot of pressure on him, causing him to scramble and throw away the ball. Our Corners are awful, apologies to Mike Jenkins who showed a lot of heart out there.
Bryan Broaddus (12:30 PM)
I have watched a quarter and a half of this game and Mike Jenkins came to play, its a shame that the safeties on this team didnt do the same.
Assuming Cowboys and Giants both win this week, dont think the following week matter with Cowboys vs Iggles and Giants vs Jets. Even if Giants win and Cowobys lose it should all come down to the last game. If that is not true, then it means Cowboys have to win out to make playoffs, do you know which is true?
Bryan Broaddus (12:36 PM)
The Giants hold the tie breaker now, but I really don't have a great deal of confidence in the Cowboys beating the Eagles on Christmas Eve.
At what point if any will we need to be concered about Bailey's mental toughness w/ the last two weeks of being iced and then missing the next kick.
Bryan Broaddus (12:37 PM)
Thanks for the question, I would not worry about Dan Bailey at all. If Holland does his job, Bailey gets that ball home and if they win the toss, I bet he would have kicked the game winner.
Danny Unites (Columbus, Oh)
5 year extension to Sensenbaugh?????? WHY??????
Bryan Broaddus (12:38 PM)
Its really two years at 8 million but I see your point. Team still needs to go out and find some safeties.
Shawn Jacob (Carrollton, TX)
Should the Cowboys consider switching back to the 4-3 defense?
Bryan Broaddus (12:40 PM)
The Owner/GM really like the 3-4 defense. Parcells sold it on him years ago. I dont see him switching.
I could see the Boys winning the next three, could see them losing the next three, the way this team is you just don't know. with that being said, do you think JJ thinks Garret is the right man for the future
Bryan Broaddus (12:42 PM)
I do like Garrett and I do believe there are things that he has done in a positive manor but this team cant keep switching head coaches. There is no way that he should have less time than what Wade Phillips was given. There are guys on this staff that need to be adjusted so lets see if he can do that.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
When some of the guys on defense see Sean Lee and Michael Jenkins playing so hard, what are they thinking to themselves? Are they ashamed at how their lack of effort looks in comparison to these guys?
Bryan Broaddus (12:46 PM)
I know what everyone thinks about DeMarcus Ware out there, but there is no more respected player in that locker room than Sean Lee on the defensive side of the ball. You also have to give Jenkins credit the way he has battled the last two weeks. The players know where the problems are.
Shawn Jacob (Carrollton, TX)
Why did Jason Garrett freeze calling a timeout when the Giants got to the goaline? Garrett shaved off at least 15 seconds. If he called a timeout when he was supposed to, Dallas would have 1:01 to work with rather than just 46 seconds.
Bryan Broaddus (12:49 PM)
I will give you the answer he gave to me last week..."I dont have a great answer for that". There was no question that he needed the time out there. My question this week will be if there is a coach in the box that helps him with clock management and timeouts.
im a huge cowboys fan, but i believe cowboys will not make it far in playoffs if they keep terrence newman. he is our weakest link on our defense! He is suppose be veteran, but he is the worst , a throwing team will throw to his side because they know he is the weakest link.So we must get rid of him to move forward as a great team!
Bryan Broaddus (12:51 PM)
I am not telling you folks something that we all already know, this will be Newman's last year. Now the question becomes, it this Scandrick's job or will they use a high selection on a CB? There are plenty of other holes in this team but CB really is the most glaring.
Outlandish maybe, but hypothetical. Would it be smart to shop Romo in the offseason? This team just has way too many holes to address and they need some young talent via the draft. If Romo and/or a Ware was tradeable what do you think would be a return package of draft picks?
Bryan Broaddus (12:56 PM)
My friend, if you did Talk Radio like I do and said what you just offered, you would make National ESPN. I was always taught to improve your team anyway you could. There are players you can trade and ones that you build with. Where the Cowboys have to be true to themselves is how they look at their team going forward. They can't be scared to make a move if it makes their team better no matter how good the players are. The Colts are in a situation where they might be moving one of the greatest QBs of all time or shipping away the first overall pick. You cant be scared.
Shu ((A Deep Deep Depression))
Is this Alan Ball's last year too? Why is Sensabaugh holding Ballard when he's passing him off to Jenkins who is right there?
Bryan Broaddus (12:58 PM)
Sensabaugh held Ballard because he was playing several yards off and when Ballard came at him, he didnt move his feet to adjust and all he could do was grab him. I dont care if the ball was uncatchable, there is a ref there to watch that. It wasnt that hard of a call. Sensabaugh played with terrible technique there.
Bryan Broaddus (12:59 PM)
Thats all the time I have today, can't thank you enough for allowing me to answer your questions. See you next week after the Tampa game. Will have my Scout's Eye up on Tuesday on ESPN Dallas...please check it out.
